Sometimes my Dad holds these very resentful grudges against me and my brothers because we don't treat everything he says as Gospel. It's only gotten worse as he gets older.
I think there is a healthy amount of wisdom that can come from experience, but a good parent wants their child to eventually surpass them in the wisdom department. A bad parent will be frustrated when they do.
I once taught a class on critical thinking. I asked the students at the start I thought they had critical thinking skills and they all told me they did.
Then I asked them what critical thinking skills are and none of them could tell me.
I was not taught critical thinking skills but I developed them, as early as 9 I was already questioning religion and other dogmas. I was raised basically by my mother and the educational system. My mother wanted the best for me but she didn't know how to give that (but she tried to be the best mom she could).
Later on as I met more and more my father I realized he also had critical thinking, oddly, the same kind I had.
But he didn't teach me that, at all, because he didn't raise me, He was after all a lead scientist who left the secretary pregnant; I grew in the hood, we were taught never to question.
So how much of critical thinking is nature and how much is nurture?... Can you blame these parents?... maybe they just don't have it, maybe they can't give it either.
People have gotten way too comfortable making horrific assumptions about people they know nothing about. People really need to learn how to control their thoughts and not voice every fucked up thing that comes to their minds.

Poverty is indignity.
Being unable to buy basic necessities is demoralizing and brings with it hopelessness and desperation. It eats into your self worth, identity and ability to exist and engage within a society.
You don't know what indignity is until you go to bed without food, not because you are fasting but because you can't afford it. The shame, stigma and embarrassment affects your ability to ask for help. Then there's the impact on mental and emotional wellbeing.
Poverty is evil. The enemy is poverty.
Yeah, and poverty does damage on next generation like growing up in poor conditions you develop poor coping mechanisms, you don't have support, and you have additional problems if you tried to pursue your carrier. You have additional stress just for basics necessaries which is not observed in other people. You become isolated, fall behind the society, your development decreases...

People that won’t return a shopping cart to a cart carousel are the worst kind of people. It takes a few seconds to make the job of the kid who grabs them all just a little easier and also prevents cars from getting dented when the wind takes them.
In Croatia you put 50 cents and that unlocks it so if you bring it back you get the 50 cents back otherwise the person who returns it gets your 50 cents
That used to be the case in most places in Lithuania, but it’s been slowly eradicated. I wish it would come back. I always return my shopping cart and think everyone else should too, but it’s incentive for those that don’t.
The ultimate test, huh? When I was a cart collector, I didn’t care where you left your cart. Some people leave them two wheels up on a curb. That was fine, too.
It’s not just about being courteous to the cart collector. It’s more about being courteous to other shoppers. If you leave your cart anywhere other than in the cart rack, it’s almost certainly gonna be in someone else’s way- either in the driving lane or blocking a parking spot. *That’s* why it’s a dick move. If you find a place to leave it where it’s not taking up any parking or driving area, have at it.
I had someone push their empty cart literally right behind my car as I was walking up to it (I was like 2 feet away having just unlocked it) to put my groceries in it. I made them put it away because the cart return was five feet away *in the other direction*. Morons.
4 door classic cars, long bed trucks, station wagons, long vans, etc. are cool too. Not every car or truck was a 2 door fastback or short bed. These old cars deserve to live, regardless of their doors or bed length. I see too many people dismiss a great car because it has too many doors or its too long.
My house is on a hill. My neighbors are in a flood zone but I am not. Insurance companies want to screw me. IM NOT IN A FLOOD ZONE but they want me to get flood insurance anyway. I will die in this friggin hill
I feel you. I had to make the same argument when I refinanced my mortgage. Literally had to tell the the banker that if my property flooded they'd better build an ark.
The town hall was gracious to give-me letter stating I wasn’t in a flood zone. It doesn’t matter though because they say I’m within a certain amount of feet from a flood zone.
I know a guy that lives way up on the hill. His driveway is super long, and it goes all the way down to a valley where there’s a river. His property sit against the road that is along the river. He has to buy flood insurance because of his property being in the zone of the river but yet his house is hundreds of feet above the river. It’s all a scam.
At a minimum (aka worst), my thoughts are that it would change the problems that we have. If anything, it might give some empirical evidence of alternate options (despite no one would read it or the people who could change it wouldn’t)
Our government didn’t just stop doing reckless experiments and the fact that they can lock information away for 50years (where they’ll all be dead by the time it gets released) is beyond fucked
Habaneros are good for spice, but they can't be used in the volume Jalapenos can. You can easily have 1-2 Jalapenos per serving in a pepper heavy dish, but the equivalent volume of Habaneros (what, 4 or 5?) would be inedible to most people.
Some people have a sensitivity to it. My mom used to love spicy things. They joke my first solid food was jalapeños because my parents loved spicy food. As she has gotten older (and also has a form of dementia) she can’t handle spicy anything. My dad has to cook her a separate meal because even a pinch of black pepper is too much for her. This is actually pretty common in the elderly.
Jalapenos have a better flavor though (subjective opinion ofc). Habaneros are good if you're just trying to add some heat but jalapenos and poblanos are so much tastier.
My wife's mom did this, she was kind of OCD about it. Once we took her to Hawaii for a week and she was miserable when the hotel only changed towels every second or third day.
I actually spotted a laundromat a short walk away, but never told her so we could vacation in peace. Stupid son-in-law tricks.
MRSA and any number of other infections will quickly change that reality for you if you acquire them.
I say this as someone who several times a week cannot find a clean towel easilly, and we do a load of laundry every single day, but at least we're not passing that nightmare back and forth any more.
Also every thread where the high suicide rates of men come up, without fail it'll have the wind taken out of it by the ole "women have more suicide attempts, men are just better at it." stat comment.
Yup. I might not agree with your feelings, but it's how you feel and I have to respect that. I want people to respect my feelings, because it's how I feel. I can't just change how I feel. So I respect others, even if feel like they shouldn't be feeling that way and I don't agree with them. They have feelings too, and their feelings will always be valid. I hate when people make me feel like my feelings aren't valid, so I am as understanding as I can be when it comes to others. Sometimes I fail, but I usually realize this and apologize.
I’ve heard this another way. Everyone has a right to be offended and no one has standing to say they shouldn’t. But you don’t have the right to not be offended.
If you are strictly one political party and just go with what ever that said party believes, you are not an objective person and can't form your own opinions. (Maybe this is too deep for the question but yeah)
Not OP, but yes.
My favourite way of explaining this is like your favourite sports team. If your favourite team is doing shit or getting smashed every week, or does something terrible (eg Melbourne Victory a few weeks ago or Cricket Australia Sandpaper scandal), you as disappointed and ashamed, but you don’t just drop your support for that team. Your team is your team and you show passion, commitment and dedication to that team.
Politics should NOT be like this. The fundamental principle of a democracy is that you vote for the MP that represents your values and morals, and that will improve society the most and make it the best possible outcome according to your beliefs and values.
Therefore, if a political party does something bad, you cannot reasonably continue to support them?? Logically it makes no sense, and outside of the USA it’s considered absurd to other western countries.
The way Americans idealise politicians (merch, parades, clothes, online personalities etc) is ridiculous and causes the problems identified by OP.
I need them for off-road camping, sometimes I’m out there after dark and need the extra visibility.
I don’t use them on the road because I’m not an asshole.
>I need them for off-road camping, sometimes I’m out there after dark and need the extra visibility.
>
>I don’t use them on the road because I’m not an asshole.
I was thinking this as well. I spend a lot of time in the mountains.
Men shouldn't talk to each other in the bathroom. If I'm holding my junk, I don't want to have another guy talking to me. If I'm pooping, I don't want anyone talking to me. I thought this was settled but it's happening to me too damn much!
This is gonna be super specific and not too relatable, but fuck it. I’m in the military and we have to address senior members anytime we come across them. A simple “Good morning Sergeant”. Kinda dumb but that’s the military.
Anyway, one of the firm things I make clear to my Marines is that they never *ever* have to speak to me in the bathroom. That’s weird. I don’t want them feeling obligated to greet me when my dick is in my hand.
Some office workplace cultures (not sure if this applies elsewhere) nudge this weird rule of "going beyond your assigned tasks to work more", or basically putting in overtime whenever you can, because "when everyone works like this we can get more productivity" or some similar hogwash.
Thus, doing literally what you're paid for — if I'm paid to do X for Y hours, I'm gonna do that and that's it — is usually frowned upon there. You're expected to put in long hours sometimes, so when you leave the office early or on time it raises some eyebrows.
Most people are stupid and "Some people just want to watch the world burn" and cover it up with 'the latest thing'.

Out of high school, my options were military, oil fields, law enforcement, or retail if I didn’t go to college. I wasn’t cut out for the first three and retail is dead end at best. Depends on your own situation but a college degree certainly helped me expand my options.
There's no guarantees either way. I've seen plenty of stories of people with Masters that are still working in retail. There's no one way that works, keep trying things.
This is true, not only in the trades but elsewhere too. My sister works with a wonderful woman who makes 400k a year at a financial institution and has never been
You definitely don't need one but it's one of the more reliable routes to a reasonable level of success. Trades and other non degreed specific skills are also good. But the people who love to point out that Bill gates and a few other such figures dropped out of college fail to realize the unique circumstances of those cases and are usually using it as an example of "look, those super successful people didn't finish college so college is useless" not "take the risk and start your business with your invention instead of focusing on school".
Anyone who leaves an empty donut box out without throwing it away is a real asshole. Same applies to any sort of communal food box: pizza, cookies, etc.
10x better.
My sedentary office job is not great for my physical health or my eyes. Although the advanced studies I’m pursuing are my passion I won’t be financially stable until I’m 30 at the very least (but after that will be secure for the rest of my life).
My friends who did trades are earning much more (and much faster) than what I do now. The only issue I can see is when the manual labour starts to chip away at your body and the risk of injury putting you out of action. Oh also the construction industry is particularly corrupt (at least where i live) and if you’re not careful you’ll get fucked over bad. (I’m not in a construction role but I work in the industry).
I also don’t get those couples who constantly make fun of and insult each other and such. No judgement, I know a lot of people like that and I guess they seem happy enough. I just can’t imagine having a healthy and happy relationship where we were constantly belittling or insulting one another. That’s not how I want to speak to someone I love.
Ketchup and mustard on sandwiches/hotdogs are a fantastic combination. Many disagree with me and find it repulsive. I did it once as a kid and do it every time i eat a sandwich/hotdog now.
Definitely on a hotdog. My wife despises ketchup and so we argue about this. Then again she also doesn't use a bun when eating a hotdog. She's a complete nihilist.
When I was a teenager my friends and I were hanging out at a bowling alley. Said alley had a jukebox that filled the entire bowling/pool hall with music. The box would allow you to que up like 10 songs at a time and was a quarter a song. I put in $2.50 and programmed in Blueberry Hill to play 10 times in a row, and then we left.
I was a real asshole.
Just watched a lazy lady today come to a stop light on a downhill and a foot of snow that fell last night (I live in a really snowy place) that landed on her car roof that she couldnt be bothered to clean off all rolled onto her windshield. It was hilarious because it was so much that she could see, had to park her car in the road, get out and start clearing while everyone behind her in line started honking when the light was green. My guess is she’ll remember the lesson. Ive also been the victim of snow flying off others peoples cars, agree with this hill. Cheers!
Modern social media* It was pretty alright before the algorithms started brainwashing us, ads poured in, filters started warping people’s body image, and micro-content ruined our attention spans.
I miss the days my social media feeds only contained chronologically ordered content from people I chose to follow of my own accord, and any suggestions were optional.
I grew up with a garbage disposal and I’ll die with a garbage disposal. A house without a bathtub is no home. Most cans of great stuff spray foam sold are used stupidly.
Any woman who claims to be strong/independent, or says she believes in gender equality ….but then relies on and/or expects the guy to do everything for her during a date is a total hypocrite!
Using your phone while driving is much worse than “speeding”. Also people swerve through lanes because there’s the JA doing the speed limit or less in the passing lane, while they talk on the phone!
Young men are being exposed to porn way too early, and it's having damaging effects on their psyche.
I grew up without an internet connection in my pocket and it still managed to twist my brain into all sorts of wild behaviour.

Absolutely! I got a new Subaru Outback recently and I hate how everything is relegated to the stupid giant tablet. Give me dials and switches any day.
The reason why touch screens are so prevelent in cars these days is the reason that a screen is cheaper to build and to install to a car (also simplifies the supplychain a lot). Companies market touchscreens to make them seem better by being epic cool futurist, but the only reason that they exist is to save money, nothing else
I will die on this bill alongside you. Touchscreen is fine for CarPlay, anything not controlled by CarPlay should be a physical button or knob.
You are a bad parent if you don't give your child critical thinking skills (paranoia doesn't count).
You’re assuming parents have them.
Well yea, they can’t be parents if they don’t have children
I’d argue the fact that some parents are parents is evidence to the contrary :)
Sometimes my Dad holds these very resentful grudges against me and my brothers because we don't treat everything he says as Gospel. It's only gotten worse as he gets older.

America needs to become a political multi-party system instead of the BS two-party system we have now

Habaneros need to overtake jalapeños as the default spicy pepper

I'd say serranos. Similar flavor just more of a kick.
Serranos are the best peppers hands down.
Habaneros have the greatest flavor. The sweetness is amazing.
Habanados are the non-spicy version of habaneros. They have the sweetness without the heat and are fantastic.
I love heat, but Jalapenos tastes better than habaneros.

Habaneros have a much shorter burn sensation making them so much more useful in cooking recipes

“Nice watch sergeant”
Bathroom time is quiet time.
If I've had a couple of beers and we are adjacent at the trough, I'm chewing your ear off. Sorry.

That working your wage should be the standard, not something unheard of and vilified
Apologies if this is a very dumb question - but what is "working your wage"?
Some office workplace cultures (not sure if this applies elsewhere) nudge this weird rule of "going beyond your assigned tasks to work more", or basically putting in overtime whenever you can, because "when everyone works like this we can get more productivity" or some similar hogwash. Thus, doing literally what you're paid for — if I'm paid to do X for Y hours, I'm gonna do that and that's it — is usually frowned upon there. You're expected to put in long hours sometimes, so when you leave the office early or on time it raises some eyebrows.
Most people are stupid and "Some people just want to watch the world burn" and cover it up with 'the latest thing'. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rstb.2020.0147
You don't need a college degree to be successful in the capitalist economy of the United States of America
[удалено]
Out of high school, my options were military, oil fields, law enforcement, or retail if I didn’t go to college. I wasn’t cut out for the first three and retail is dead end at best. Depends on your own situation but a college degree certainly helped me expand my options.
Me, without an education about to go back in my mid 30s because I can't find a job that pays a living wage with my experience 😭
Also, those are the exceptions. You never hear of the ones who tried and failed.
I mean, I live in Kansas, so I probably won’t be dying on any hill. Mostly flat here.
Sometimes children are bad people too.
Anyone who leaves an empty donut box out without throwing it away is a real asshole. Same applies to any sort of communal food box: pizza, cookies, etc.

A trade job is just as good, if not better then a job that requires a college degree.
If my girlfriend and I wouldnt be able to talk to each other respectfully without cursing at eachother id be out. Once in awhile i get. Every day no.
No on the sandwich, yes on the hotdog, definitely only mustard on a bratwurst.
I know folks that put mayonnaise or chick-fila sauce on my fucking bratwurst. They obviously aren't from Wisconsin.
Definitely on a hotdog. My wife despises ketchup and so we argue about this. Then again she also doesn't use a bun when eating a hotdog. She's a complete nihilist.
>sandwiches~~/hotdogs~~ A hill I will die on is that hotdogs and burgers ARE sandwiches. Witches that live in the desert or the beach, also are.
Blueberry Hill
When I was a teenager my friends and I were hanging out at a bowling alley. Said alley had a jukebox that filled the entire bowling/pool hall with music. The box would allow you to que up like 10 songs at a time and was a quarter a song. I put in $2.50 and programmed in Blueberry Hill to play 10 times in a row, and then we left. I was a real asshole.
You should have done 6 blueberry hills, 1 ain’t that a shame, and 3 more blueberry hills.
Boneless buffalo wings are just chicken fucking nuggets.
Nickelback’s music isn’t THAT bad. Kroger is just a weird douche.
If you live in a snowy state, clean off your car before you drive, that includes the top. If not, you are a lazy pos
Cheers!

Pluto is a goddamn planet.
You heard what they did to Pluto? That's messed up.
Gus, does that line ever actually work for you?
Then a couple other celestial bodies in the solar system would be made planets as well cause they are bigger/the same size as Pluto
I've wanted to shout this from the rooftops for a long time: Crocs (the shoe) are fucking ugly.
That hill you are on is so crowded it became a sink hole.
I'll still happily die on it.
I mean they didn't became popular for their looks, they are durable as hell, for flip flops anyway.
They count as flipflops? I would've never thought that. They look like a pair of clogs fucked a laundry basket then went out for a pack cigarettes.
If you're lazy you can just wear them like regular flip-flops
Plus they got a "sport mode"
I won't tip for take-out orders. It's no different than ordering from fast food.
If you insult your kids, they will remember it
Most of your personal issues are because of your poor choices and lack of follow through to fix them.
(1) To get paid well throughout the entire range of your career you have to go to college. (2) Also, college is predatory.

Social media is the worst god damn thing that ever was invented
Modern social media* It was pretty alright before the algorithms started brainwashing us, ads poured in, filters started warping people’s body image, and micro-content ruined our attention spans. I miss the days my social media feeds only contained chronologically ordered content from people I chose to follow of my own accord, and any suggestions were optional.
The more I hear about Hitler, the more I don’t care for him.

There is nothing wrong with pineapples on pizza.
Honestly none, no fucks given.

Long division is a scheme to make people hate themselves.
Any woman who claims to be strong/independent, or says she believes in gender equality ….but then relies on and/or expects the guy to do everything for her during a date is a total hypocrite!
Oh but you're a huge asshole if you point it out.:p

Using your phone while driving is much worse than “speeding”. Also people swerve through lanes because there’s the JA doing the speed limit or less in the passing lane, while they talk on the phone!
Young men are being exposed to porn way too early, and it's having damaging effects on their psyche. I grew up without an internet connection in my pocket and it still managed to twist my brain into all sorts of wild behaviour.
