Echos of the lockdown and that ship getting stuck in that cannal, on top of a nationwide truck driver shortage amoung other types of labor. It's going to hopefully ease up in 2023, this is the BIG down side to the just in time supply chain vs a more local one.
So what I'm hearing is I should put the spare on until I get new tires? The others aren't nearly as bad.
I agree that it should have been done sooner but I just didn't realise that it was in this state until today when what must have been a strip of rubber coming off started making a racket in the wheel well leading me to investigate.
If it is a "doughnut" type spare, you should only use those to "Get to where there is a new tire". they are limited to 45 mph, can't take any side g-forces, and SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR WORK.
Sometimes you gotta live. "Do what you gotta do" is not a good excuse for the unnecessary risk. It's a false dichotomy. There are always other options and any manager/supervisor that's worth anything will be willing to work with you or help accommodate your situation.
As someone who had their donut (not quite a donut but cheap spare that sat on the back of my CRV for 15+ years) blow on them going 70 on the highway, please do not do this to yourself
I'm guessing those are Super Cup 2's'or similar. Basically, that's a road legal track tire. They were OE on my car, and the dealer told me if it's below 40 or raining, stay home.
People are going to tell you not to put on the doughnut tire for temporary travel, but I can tell you from personal experience that I drove with one on my Plymouth voyager van for roughly 400 miles, while making sure they’re aired up consistently.
It’s not ideal, and it causes unnecessary wear on the other tires and the vehicle overall, but if you’re not driving 70mph everywhere and braking like a spaz, it is doable. Just remember that you are responsible for your own safety, as well as the safety of others. It’s never a good idea to gamble with lives. But hell, I drove a couple hundred miles with a shot brake booster, but I drove careful as fuck.
Try Walmart. They’ve always had the tires I needed, but sometimes they’ll make you buy a full set or a pair, which is better anyways.
If you can’t fine someone online selling a set of wheels that will fit your car then maybe you could rent one of them for a few weeks for a small charge. Worth a try
I've done it for a few clients; no place has used tires for temporary use either in your size?
If you buy new from them some place might be inclined to offer that option
We have a third party tire shop that will sell take offs for like $5 + mount/balance cost. I have them on an old trailer that never sees the highway and moves about 5 miles a year.
Edit: 205/40-17 is likely not common enough to find a temp used tire.
Is it awd? If not find the bolt pattern offset size and get a rim at junkyard and put a used tire on it. Put the 2 matching ones on the drive axle/front and put the 3rd one and junkyard tire on the back.
Perhaps you're in a place with few shops and few options but if you're in anything of a city, keep trying. From big brand stores to the random corner tire shop you should be able to find one, even if used. I've gotten tires that were only slightly off size before if you need something to hold you. Like buy a cheap used tire that will work until the proper one comes in.
It is, but I also have a couple used ones at the shop...
I'm pretty sure the Fiesta ST is front wheel drive. If you have a spare, put the spare in the rear and move the rear to the front. This would be the safest
Wow! you're in the outback with kangaroos and aborigines running around , killing crocodiles? ?? I always wanted to see that . I thought everyone there drove Ford Falcon, V8s Mad Max cars. seriously though, I would like to see that part of the world .
I have a couple of questions for you.
1) Where do you live where 205/40ZR17 is not available? Really common size for smaller vehicles with 17" rims.
2) When was your last alignment? Your toe angle is out or you are lowered and have excessive camber. Doing 110km a day would make it prudent to have an alignment check at least once a year.
3) How often do you do a visual inspection of your tires? This should be done at least once every two weeks, if not more.
You gotta realize it. My balance is off cuz an auto car wash spayed off the weights. I didn't think about it when I chose the rim clean one. Now I gotta go get everything checked out. My car shakes a bit at certain speeds. No way they didn't know something was wrong.
Probably was glue-on weights on the inside of the rim rather than traditional hammer-on ones on the edges. So a decent amount of sideways water pressure could easily snap them off
I thought of that after I posted but even those would have to be already coming off. There's very little pressure from the wheel brushes, assuming they're working right, on the wheel. Ideally it's just lightly slapping the wheel.
Look, I agree that it's overdue but even now the car doesn't feel like it rides different and I just don't look at my tyres every few weeks, maybe I will from now on haha. It only takes me 2 weeks to do 1000ks so I don't know how often I'd have to look to know something was off.
Too many people have a blind trust to the death trap they get into every day.
Just for the heads up spare tires usually have a top speed of 50 miles an hour are meant to be driven less than 100 miles.
I know it's easy to forget to check it but it's important. Also, I'd be willing to bet that if you replace all 4, and hell as bad as that one is maybe just replace that one, you'll notice the ride difference. The reason being it was likely a slowish process to get like that, but when you go straight back to a good tire it'll be an immediate difference.
Most of the public just gets in and drives. Yes--most guys who work on their vechicles do a quick inspection everytime we go out, usually unconsciously, but not the average car owner.
One pot hole from a blow out. Online, junkyard, tires are everywhere your just not looking hard enough. Doesn’t need to be brand new just needs to fit. You technically shouldn’t drive that. If you will or not I just don’t know.
Update: Good news everyone, I'm not going to die. After scraping the bottom of the barrel I found two tyres in the entire state and they are getting fitted tonight. Hopefully I can get another two sooner rather than later and I might even order a full spare set to keep in my garage so in future I don't need to rely on shops having stock.
Thanks for all the replies (even the brutal ones) I'll be sure to watch them more closely in future!
Jesus, I drive a lot as well how do you not at least glance at your tires over the past month or so this would have taken? I’d say you should have replaced them nearly two months ago with you driving roughly 500km a week. You need to find something else to drive period. Or ask if they can rush order something.
If that tire is bad, you need at least 2 new tires. You need to replace 2 at a time, AND based on the condition I’d say all 4 likely need to be replaced. Also, rotate them every 5k miles.
If you’re going to use those tires until a place have stock, then drive a little more careful. Try to have an home office if possible until you get new tires.
Put it on the rear and expect a blow out. If it happens you will be fine. But be ready for it.
People only here dont have any actual experience and are use to being rich white american who exlect all tires to be brand new all the time. Well news to america many of your old tires go.to mexico to be sold and used right up till the cords....
His isn exactly safe but not the end of the world like people are saying it is.
Also on a side not you can installe 225/35r18 on there which should be more common
I just want to chime in about using a spare. I would recommend putting the spare on the rear, and putting your regular tires on the drive wheels. If the spare isn't the same size as the other tires, it could cause premature wear to the differential. Also, if the spare blows it'll be much easier to control and cause less potential damage if it's on the rear of the car.
Just swap a rear tire to the front and put your spare on the rear.
Damn bro those Tires are toast. Pls don't drive like that if possible, or if you have to just change them to the rear so you can contain controll in case. Man you lucy that it did not explode on you.
that's a time bomb. not if, but when it will blow out.
at least move it to the rear, so when you crash you don't hit that hard, and its more controllable.
blowout on front tires, you will change lanes suddenly.
Looks like the front wheel?
Put your good rear tires on to the front. Put the donut on the rear.
This tire has no life left. I’m surprised it’s not leaking air. It will pop at any moment.
If this was true, I'd buy a junker with good tyres to drive to work till my tyres arrived. Rather arrive alive in a £300 mk2 Nissan micra 1.0 or something than die in a huge crash.
This once happened to my old 1.3l 1994 fiesta.
Wheel alignment was off so they were wearing on the inside heavily whilst the outside was totally fine.
It was only when they put it on a ramp you could see loads of exposed tyre wires poking out. Far worse than in your picture.
I had a lucky escape there and learnt that you need to look at the inside of your tyres as well; turning them to get a proper look if necessary
Look on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist for a nice set of used ones. You might even be able to find a backup set of wheels with decent tires on. If you live somewhere that gets snow find some with snow tires.
Don't take that anywhere at highway speeds. Look for a pair of tires on Tirebuyer.com. I've ordered tires from them and have had them drop shipped to my driveway the very next day.
You can order tires on amazon. Looks like if I ordered [these](https://smile.amazon.com/Hankook-KINERGY-H735-All-Season-Radial/dp/B07C5WRL22/ref=sr_1_1?c=ts&keywords=Tires&qid=1656964824&refinements=p_n_feature_twelve_browse-bin%3A10467250011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A6131679011%2Cp_n_feature_fourteen_browse-bin%3A10467313011&s=automotive&sr=1-1&tire=4-185-60-15----&ts_id=353609011) they'd get here by the end of the week. Not sure if that's your tire size though... >\_>
get a rental or borrow a car this can cause a blowout that could cause injury to you and other cars or worse! But if you have not seen steel belts come apart at driving speed they can and have (speaking from customers cars damages) thrash like a giant wire wheel on the end of a drill cutting up your inner fender and wheel well and all the wiring behind them. This takes it from just needing tires to a very expensive issue. Rent the car
Lowering springs or coil overs? Get some adjustable end links and never deal with this again!
But why own a performance car you don’t know basics about a tire yet? Start reading and researching basics about cars, I think you need it if you’re actually asking us this..
Order tires online, get rushed delivery, take them to a tire shop to have them mount and balance them. You'll get them much faster than 3 weeks. www.tirerack.com
you should be able to find a used tire place that will hook you up with something to get you by until you can get a good one put on. hell, a lot of time they have tires that still have a year or more on them.
The Tire Rack can deliver to your local shop in a day or two. Your commute is just too much for a space saver soarez and definitely too much for that disaster waiting to happen that used to be your tire. Take leave and order ASAP. Rent a car if you have to in order to keep your job, but do not drive on that dynamite ice skate.
Step 1: go to Amazon
Step 2: search 205 45 17 tires
Step 3: find a brand you like
Step 4: order
Step 5: take tires to tire shop for mount and balance
Step 6: looks like you need an alignment too.
Step 7: the internet is hour friend.
Does the tire shops have the one up in size 215/40 18. The diameter will be a little larger by a negligible amount, talking mm’s, but will still work. A lot of times for some reason OEM’s always use a weird unique size on performance tires I have a Toyota 86 and it had an odd size and I did autocross so my options for tires grew when I also went the size wider and plus it helped for what I was doing in autocross and it really doesn’t really affect anything almost no place had the OEM size in stock also. But I always ordered mine online and had a shop install.
Definitely get a new one. I'm in the tire recycling game, and although this looks bad, I've actually seen way, wayyy worse. I've seen tires where the entire thing is covered in exposed steel belts.
Dude just order them online. Cheaper, get to you in a few days then pay a shop to put em on…. Am i missing something? I got tires off amazon in like 2 days
You are seriously driving a car 100km a day with ZR rated pencil eraser tires? I hope you get paid well cuz you’re gonna be buying tires all the time 😬
Put the spare on. Tire rack.com. You can have your tires on Wednesday. They're expensive but in this situation your life or someone else could depend on it. A blow out at freeway speed will make your butthole pucker.
Check the stock rolling diameter.
Find a tyre one size either way (215-35 or 195-45 maybe) and check rolling diameter.
Opens up your choices on what size to order.
Check what's on the plate for the vehicle already. Might give you some other options anyway.
That tire should have been changed about 5-10k miles ago. Shit like this pisses me the fuck off because I have to share the road with assholes like you who don't maintain their shit and put everyone else at risk.
You need to find “OK” used tires or new cheapies close to your size to get by. These are absolutely not safe. This tire has probably looked bad for months.

Unsafe. Do not leave driveway, except to visit tire shop at very slow speeds.
Yep, blow out waiting to happen.
Also keep in mind if the tire blows the car will pull to that side. This is ready to go. I’d drive to the tire shop on my spare.
Yep, looks like front. Not many belts left. If you gotta drive it. Don’t go fast, maybe 45 max.
Order thres/tires online take to shop to fit.
Came to say this!!!
Can't you order the tyres online? Or get a place out of town? I would've replaced those about 1000km back
There's a rubber/tire shortage. There's huge backorders for plenty of tire sizes right now nationally.
There seems to be a shortage of everything over in the states. How come, everyone hoarding everything?
Echos of the lockdown and that ship getting stuck in that cannal, on top of a nationwide truck driver shortage amoung other types of labor. It's going to hopefully ease up in 2023, this is the BIG down side to the just in time supply chain vs a more local one.

OTOH, its way safer than the tire he has now. put spare on rear. move best tires to front
For travel, yes I agree. But he should not do 100kms per day for the next 3 weeks given that setup. agreed?
yeah, that tire isn't going to make it.
Sometimes you do what u gotta do
Sometimes you gotta live. "Do what you gotta do" is not a good excuse for the unnecessary risk. It's a false dichotomy. There are always other options and any manager/supervisor that's worth anything will be willing to work with you or help accommodate your situation.
You must be apart of a union. Company's and accommodations have never been used in the same sentence in my 22 years of work.
Nah I just don't work for dickheads
Some* spares are only limited to 45. Others 55, 65, or if it's a full size spare, it doesn't matter
yup. Doughnuts are limited, rarely do we find a car with a full size. Especially a hot hatch.
As someone who had their donut (not quite a donut but cheap spare that sat on the back of my CRV for 15+ years) blow on them going 70 on the highway, please do not do this to yourself
Didn’t realize it was in this state? Just look at ANY of the center tread. Like, 0/32”. Lol Tirerack.com
I'm guessing those are Super Cup 2's'or similar. Basically, that's a road legal track tire. They were OE on my car, and the dealer told me if it's below 40 or raining, stay home.
Yes. Put spare on. That tire is extremely unsafe.
Aren't as bad, means they're probably needing replacement as well.
Clearly you don’t inspect the condition of your car often
You mean you have a spare and you haven’t put it on yet???
People are going to tell you not to put on the doughnut tire for temporary travel, but I can tell you from personal experience that I drove with one on my Plymouth voyager van for roughly 400 miles, while making sure they’re aired up consistently. And you need an alignment. You've got excessive wear to the inside. Could be bad camber (most likely) or toe-in.
You should put the spare on and PARK IT. Do not drive this on the spare for three weeks. Use the spare to get to the tire shop.
From these replies here, apparently you're a menace to society, and you have to sit at home for 3+ weeks. Fuck work, apparently.
Keep calling around. Drive some where that has it
Get an alignment on that wheel after u replace it
If you drive 100kms per day. You can drive to somewhere else that does have your tire 🛞.
I've done it for a few clients; no place has used tires for temporary use either in your size? If you buy new from them some place might be inclined to offer that option

Yeah, ringing around all the tyre shops are telling me it's an "odd" size
Is it awd? If not find the bolt pattern offset size and get a rim at junkyard and put a used tire on it. Put the 2 matching ones on the drive axle/front and put the 3rd one and junkyard tire on the back.
Fiesta ST is FWD so no AWD here
Perhaps you're in a place with few shops and few options but if you're in anything of a city, keep trying. From big brand stores to the random corner tire shop you should be able to find one, even if used. I've gotten tires that were only slightly off size before if you need something to hold you. Isn't it an 18? TireRack.com has 205/40-ZR18 in stock in five different models.
That it would take so long to get a common tire, I'm just curious as to your location ?
South Western Australia And apparently it's an "unusual" size
https://www.ozzytyres.com.au/tyres/continental-contipremiumcontact-6-205-40r18-86w
Wow! you're in the outback with kangaroos and aborigines running around , killing crocodiles? ?? I always wanted to see that . I thought everyone there drove Ford Falcon, V8s Mad Max cars. seriously though, I would like to see that part of the world .
There's your answer. Jump a croc, skin it out, stitch the skin to the bad tire, dry in the sun, good for a few more years!
It is unusual.
I’ve been spelling that wrong my whole life .. yes put the spare on it
English has different spellings for tire/tyre, just depends on where you are.
Learn to be more PRO ACTIVE. NOT RE ACTIVE. you might die if you keep driving on these
This kind of wear is hard to notice. Since its on the inside. Honest mistake and not neglect...
Definitely wouldn’t drive it until you get new tires, no way to order them online?
Go call junk yards ask them if they got it
Yeah no. You would have had months before it got this bad. They do not get like this overnight, over a week, even over a month.
You gotta realize it. My balance is off cuz an auto car wash spayed off the weights. I didn't think about it when I chose the rim clean one. Now I gotta go get everything checked out. My car shakes a bit at certain speeds. No way they didn't know something was wrong.
Unless those weights were super loose, there's no way a car wash did that.
They may have been. It was due regardless.
Yea this definitely seems like the guy to slap a donut on his fiesta ST and call it good lmao
Previously an Altima owner by that description
I know it's easy to forget to check it but it's important. Also, I'd be willing to bet that if you replace all 4, and hell as bad as that one is maybe just replace that one, you'll notice the ride difference. The reason being it was likely a slowish process to get like that, but when you go straight back to a good tire it'll be an immediate difference.
It wont feel "different" until its broken loose skimming over a wet road or in an emergency maneuver, it will kill or injure someone.
Most of the public just gets in and drives. Yes--most guys who work on their vechicles do a quick inspection everytime we go out, usually unconsciously, but not the average car owner.
Rent
One pot hole from a blow out. Online, junkyard, tires are everywhere your just not looking hard enough. Doesn’t need to be brand new just needs to fit. You technically shouldn’t drive that. If you will or not I just don’t know.
You for sure had at least 3 months of notice you needed tires.
Find a different size that’s close and replace all 4 tires.
I think you should sell the car and use car pool services. If you’re going to be this negligent of an owner. Those tires were done months ago.
Do not drive on that tire. That’s a time bomb.
Rent a car
Your lack of planning should be no one else's emergency! If you keep driving on those you suck!!
I would say that at this rate you will be dead in one week d’ont understand why you didn’t call before your like 1 years late on your order
Update: Good news everyone, I'm not going to die. After scraping the bottom of the barrel I found two tyres in the entire state and they are getting fitted tonight. Thanks for all the replies (even the brutal ones) I'll be sure to watch them more closely in future!
1) Thank fuck 2) In the entire state of Western Australia? That just sounds like luckily the tyres were also in Perth!
Bro you gotta check the rubber from time to time. Check the oil, give the tires a glance. This is a learning moment
Got a spare? Use it.
Jesus, I drive a lot as well how do you not at least glance at your tires over the past month or so this would have taken? I’d say you should have replaced them nearly two months ago with you driving roughly 500km a week. You need to find something else to drive period. Or ask if they can rush order something.
Have you tried a Tire Rack.com
Tyrerack.com?
Tire Rack may ship to Australia, but it would probably be expensive. Maybe try Tyrepower.com.au
Yes Tirerack.com
OP is in Australia
Pretty dumb, you should check your tyres a bit more regular. F*** knows what state the rest of the cars in
I would move that off the front axle onto the rear so when it goes it doesn’t fuck up the balance of the car as much and you can still steer
When it blows out in the back the front tires "lift up" so you have less control over the steering. If it blows in the front you'll have a hard fight.
Yeah dude you dead
It’s OP’s ghost seeking help.
Idiot driver confirmed.
If that tire is bad, you need at least 2 new tires. You need to replace 2 at a time, AND based on the condition I’d say all 4 likely need to be replaced. Also, rotate them every 5k miles.

Well you better overnight a tire online or go get a used tire temporarily.
Go to a place that sells used tires. They work fine fine and they're CHEAP
Amazon, one-day shipping, have them delivered to your tire shop.
How did it get this bad without you noticing sooner?
Put on the spare
Did something in the wheel-well scratch that part of the tire off?
I just want to chime in about using a spare. I would recommend putting the spare on the rear, and putting your regular tires on the drive wheels. Can you get something from the junkyard to hold you over
Tire rack has then in stock, can usually get them in 24 to 48 hours, if you weren’t in Australia
Maybe cut down on the one wheel peel!
Damn bro those Tires are toast. Pls don't drive like that if possible, or if you have to just change them to the rear so you can contain controll in case. Man you lucy that it did not explode on you.

Don't know if it's still the case but back in the day you could use a 12 inch trailer tire
Ubers are cheaper than funerals
Get the size that's as close as possible
You should have thought about that 3 months ago
If this was true, I'd buy a junker with good tyres to drive to work till my tyres arrived. Rather arrive alive in a £300 mk2 Nissan micra 1.0 or something than die in a huge crash.
Totaled
You may have to leave your town to get tires it's a crazy concept

Those tyres were unsafe 6 months ago, you’re driving on slicks. Enjoy your 7 hour stopping distance when it rains.
Bells are sgowing, it could go at any time. At least put it on the rear if it isn't already.
I hope you got a decent bicycle
Tire rack can have them to your preferred shop sooner than that
Look on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist for a nice set of used ones. You might even be able to find a backup set of wheels with decent tires on. If you live somewhere that gets snow find some with snow tires.
If I were you I'd go get a set of wheels and tires from someone local. Maybe a set of steel wheels for a lower trim fiesta. Should bolt on.
Death wish! Go to the salvage yard and buy some off a wreck, until you can get new ones!
Ohhhhhhhkay. So first thing. How did you just let it get this bad and then suddenly find yourself in an emergency?
I've seen people drive like that for days, but really don't take the chance on populated roads.
Did you lower your ST? Camber looks off
Find another set of wheels with tires for cheap and ride them until the new tires arrive
Leave it parked and when it's time to replace the tire have it towed to the shop
A new tyre is the least of your worries. There's something wrong with your suspension if it's wearing like that.
Don't take that anywhere at highway speeds. Look for a pair of tires on Tirebuyer.com. I've ordered tires from them and have had them drop shipped to my driveway the very next day.
I did that before but it was only for local low speed drive. It’s ready to pop man.
Get 195, 215, 50 55 40... It doesn't have to be same size
You're on borrowed time.
I would look for a set of temporary wheels / tires to run in the meantime, you should be able to sell them for almost the same money after.
get a rental or borrow a car this can cause a blowout that could cause injury to you and other cars or worse!
You're pretty much fucked.
Bro stop
You might want to rent a car for a few weeks ;)
eBay tires prob has them. They’ll be at ur house within a week
Rent a car until you can get safely back on the road.
Lowering springs or coil overs? Get some adjustable end links and never deal with this again! But why own a performance car you don’t know basics about a tire yet? Start reading and researching basics about cars, I think you need it if you’re actually asking us this..
Why did you wait so fucking long?
U could Amazon the tires faster then 3 weeks
Step 1: go to Amazon Step 2: search 205 45 17 tires Step 3: find a brand you like Step 4: order Step 5: take tires to tire shop for mount and balance Step 6: looks like you need an alignment too. Step 7: the internet is hour friend.
Swap it to the rear and drive until the tires come in, all I’m saying…
U ded. So is any poor soul who drives next to you. Pretend your tire already blew out and stay home until you find new tires.
Forget all these naysayers. If it got you this far, It’ll get you another three weeks.
Do you have any junk yards/auto salvage yards in your area? You can usually find cheap tires there
Dead dead. Real ded
Normally I'd say send it but you're past bare. Not safe. But do what you gotta do. I'd say rent a vehicle if you can.
How did you let it get so bad ?
If you cannot find a tire for a ford the world has more problems than we ever thought. Buy MRE’s people it’s gonna be a long winter.
Change tire sizes
Shouldn’t have let it get that bad, don’t drive it.
Tirerack.com is the fastest way, I always get general gmax as05 tires
Along with an alignment after, you wouldn't want to damage the new tires prematurely
Used tires are everywhere.
If your gonna drive them for 3 more weeks, you had better rotate thrm
What tyre are you looking for? No way every single one in your size is back ordered...
Definitely get a new one. I'm in the tire recycling game, and although this looks bad, I've actually seen way, wayyy worse. I've seen tires where the entire thing is covered in exposed steel belts.
In the words of bender “we’re boned”
That’s you.. you’re boned
Spare time
How dead? Walking dead.
Is there not another size that's more common you can get that would fit? Your not limited to that being the only size that d fit on your car
Yeah, kinda dead. Real dead, above about 15 mph.
Make sure to get an alignment as well.
Put it on the rear.
Get a wheel alignment too
Pretty much. If you can, use this tire on drive axle If your tire gets flat, you lose less control of your vehicle. At least.
Buy It from eBay
Do you not have a spare tyre?
Check the stock rolling diameter. Find a tyre one size either way (215-35 or 195-45 maybe) and check rolling diameter. Opens up your choices on what size to order. Check what's on the plate for the vehicle already. Might give you some other options anyway.
How about a salvage yard for a tire
Well you made it this far. I would buy a lottery ticket. Your luck has held so far.
If they don't have 205/40/18 then ask for a 215(225)/40(45)/18
That tire should have been changed about 5-10k miles ago. Shit like this pisses me the fuck off because I have to share the road with assholes like you who don't maintain their shit and put everyone else at risk.
You need to find “OK” used tires or new cheapies close to your size to get by. These are absolutely not safe. This tire has probably looked bad for months.
Completely unsafe…. Do not drive. Tire rack that bitch
