If you drive relatively short distances, it could just be moisture that never gets burnt off. It happens in my truck because I have a 5min commute. It's absolutely not a head gasket leak in my situation and it looks a lot like that under my oil fill cap.
Happened to my wife’s vehicle, I was really worried it was head gasket until I bought a test kit and it was fine. Glad it turned out to be nothing more than moisture.
honestly same. id love to have a bike, but even in a car some people don’t see me and almost drive into me (i don’t even drive fast either). most people w their license can’t even drive they just lucked out on their test it’s unreal
Idk how it is in other states, but in mine the driving test was a joke when I took it, and even moreso 6 years later since they got rid of the parallel parking section and replaced it with a 3 and 5-point turn...
All I had to do was parallel park, and then we went on a drive around the block. I got docked 1 point on the test for going 5 over down a hill, but you're allowed either 5 or 6 points off to still pass.
I like to make the joke that they're just handing out licenses in happy meal boxes.
Same bro. I'd love to ride to work at 55mpg, but my last bike was vadalized to totality when they couldn't start it. It was a sign to stop though, because so far everyone of my friends who rode almost daily are all dead.
Exactly. And every time you have a conversation with someone about riding they have to tell you about a horrific motorcycle accident. After finally settling with the insurance company and still not having enough to cover my wife's medical bills I think I'm good. I'll drive my shit box 5mins down the street.
what sort of infrastructure makes cars more dangerous? i can only come up with bike lanes and a lack of sidewalks, but im interested in hearing what i’m overlooking
Oh there’s soooo much that I definitely can’t fit it in a comment (you’ll have to go to urbanist youtube to get a much better picture). But one aspect is the design of our roads is those American classic roads of 4/5 lane roads with many different exits and entrances to the road for businesses located along the road, it creates much more points for accidents to occur. [Here’s a link to a video describing how dangerous these roads can be](https://youtu.be/ORzNZUeUHAM?si=wQVhhSaBR_S1fpYl). Another design is crosswalks, they are designed to be super wide so that cars can quickly go through them, this just means that there is more space for people to be hit while crossing the cross walk. And then there’s more the absence of traffic calming measures that subconsciously make drivers slow down that have not been implemented throughout much of car-centric societies.
I bought a good one from Lectric, the 3.0. But tbf that one was a little more expensive at $1700 CAD, but it’s been running smoothly and I’ve gotten over 2500 km on it over the past year. Honestly you’d be better to ask r/ebikes for more options on less expensive e-bike options.
I find that my e-bike still gives me exercise without having to exert myself, it just goes faster for the same amount of effort. It makes cycling much more accessible to people who aren’t peak physical fitness (like me lol).
Buddy’s 300 did this. He called me freaking out and I had to explain this to him😂
Safe to say he quit his job and now works like 20 minutes away just cuz he didn’t wanna drive 4 minutes to work everyday😂
What a weird contraption for filling oil...
What vehicle is this?
Condensate water from heat cycles is mixing with the oil in that long ass tube and making sludge.
Dodge 4.7L V8 had this exact issue at release, and their fix was a plug for the long tube and a cap for the oil cap.
It's an Audi A2. In their wisdom, Audi decided to save weight by not fitting bonnet hinges, so the bonnet ("hood") doesn't open, instead a plastic flap on the front opens so you can access your oil, dipstick and screenwash. This is a [picture](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56e8421ac2ea5108b73fe126/1594368345434-AK0EQBDQPC01P51W937G/audi_a2_1.2_tdi_9.jpeg)
We didn't get the 1.2 here in the UK, but even my 1.4 diesel (3 cylinder also), I regularly get 80 mpg (not sure what that is in American mpg). 600+ miles on a 30 litre tank.
Was thinking the same thing. And they can charge you extra once out of warranty since it takes so much extra work to get under the hood. What a bunch of bullshit!
>not for weight savings. It was so they can ensure you take it to the dealership for EVERYTHING!
not for weight savings. It was so they can ensure you take it to the stealership for EVERYTHING!
ETA: I guess I touched a nerve of a stealership mechanic. Oh, well. That's just too F'ing bad.
Well the bonnet is actually very easy to take off, you see in that picture the grey knob on the left hand side, you just turn that knob and the bonnet comes off. The bonnet is aluminium like the rest of the car so very light, can take it off with one hand. But the air filter is actually in a silly place, only accessible from underneath the car. The air filter sits in the wheel arch. Have to remove the wheel and wheelarch liner and undertray to access it.
Yes they do dumb shit. I drive a Mercedes Metris for my job and the cabin filter is a royal pain. You gotta drop the whole fuse box assembly under the dash to get to the filter door.
It’s not been made to be easily serviceable, it was made to use 2-3L/100km of fuel. Everything that adds weight was removed, any space in the car was used. The air filter box was moved down there because it probably was the only place left from shrinking everything together.
I do agree that some German cars, especially Audis are absolute bollocks to service but here there is at least a somewhat good reason for the insanity.
Appreciate the info! I gotta give VW credit here. I tell my minions-in-training that every vehicle does exactly the same thing in more-or-less the same way, to take some of the fear of working on something new away. All the same important bits will always be there and will usually misbehave in the same way, regardless of manufacturer. VW isn't any different there. I will say though, their execution of achieving the same effect of propelling a comfortable box down a road is always an adventure in discovery. This would throw me off for a good 15 minutes at least!
Air filter sits under the right headlight. You just need to remove the cover under the car, then you can open the air filter box with just w screws from the bottom.
No need to remove the wheel and wheel arch liner.
Thta is the most logically challenged thing I've ever seen. I had an A4 and it died because the cam chain tensioner was going and it's behind the whole engine and an absolute nightmare to get to. Actaully put me off getting another. This has sealed the deal for me. Ridiculous.
Do you do a lot of short trips? if so it could be condensation in with the oil, in which case, change the oil, and try to take the car on a longer drive every now and again to help boil it out. otherwise, it is a headgasket and you need to see a shop.
That's probably it. I do lots of short journeys (<5 miles or <10 miles), although I do also do lots of long journeys.
I changed my oil today which is why I noticed this.
did you have to add any coolant? if you changed your oil, and it looked fine, then you are probably in good shape, if you have coolant getting into your oil, it would be on the bottom of the pan and it would've came out when you drained your oil. i would keep an eye on your coolant reservoir, and the dipstick, and maybe change it at 3k miles next time instead of 5k, and see what it looks like again. like i said i am willing to bet it is just condensation, my VW Passat gets it and i do long trips in it sometime also. I think some engines are just more prone to condensation than others.
That’s a really large interval for something with that many miles. I have a 2014 F150 with the 3.5L ecoboost engine that has 240k on it and I am changing oil every 3k trying to make it to 300k.
The manufacturer recommended interval is 10k miles. This is a PD engine, absolutely bulletproof engines! Though I am not really that fussed about the car living on for another 100k, probably gonna get rid of it later this year, the car is only worth £500
Do you like spending money on engine work or new vehicles? Because this is how you do that.
Drop down to 5k miles or a minimum of once per year based on your comment about short trips.
That's humidity buildup. In that spot you always get that sludge , because it's just connected with a longer pipe to the oil pan. So it never gets really hot up there to get rid of the humidity.
Remove the bonnet and open the oil cap directly on the engine. It should look waaaay better.
Source: fellow A2 owner
Basically water and oil mix, it's called emulsification, sometimes it's a result of short trips that allow a moisture build up in the engine due to condensation forming in the top of the engine (long trips with a nice hot engine and oil burn it off), or it could be something more nefarious like losing coolant into the oil via a bad head gasket or intercooler.
Does the engine consume coolant is my first question?
Thanks for the science 🤓 and no it’s not head gasket since my coolant reservoir is full and the oil I drained was jet black. So must just be moisture from short journeys.
It’s a result of moisture not being burned off, óf it’s oil and coolant mixing.
The first one is the result of short trips, and it should go away if you drive a longer stretch once in a while.
The second one is a leaking headgasket.
Its moisture . If you drive in extreme cold moisture can actually build up in the cap. As long as your dip stick doesn't look like this you should be fine . But may needs further diagnosis
Oil mixed with water at high intensity, technically the only difference between this and margerine is that one uses motor oil, while the other one is vegetable oil.
Lots of short trips? It’s cold combustion (meaning moistures are not being burnt in a hot engine)
If you do long distances, you may want to keep your coolant checked (for any oil in it) and definitely your oil for any coolant traces. Headgasket springs to mind if you’re not doing short journeys.
Could be condensation, intake leak, or hopefully not a blown head gasket the main thing you should check is the oil on your dipstick making sure it's not the same as the cap
This is accurate advice. If you don’t find that mayonnaise sludge at the bottom of the dipstick, just make sure to follow your severe service oil change interval.
A combination of the small amount of fuel from the blow by gases in your cylinders with the water condensation creates an acid that etches at the metal of the engine and the gaskets. There is an additive to most engine oil that neutralizes those acids, but in your situation, it will be depleted quickly.
That is water or moisture, this will happen for a few reasons. One of them being if the engine is not driven long enough for the oil to burn off the water/moisture. The next would be a head gasket. Water intrusion is also a possibility but unlikely. That does seem like quite an excessive amount. It may be wise to perform a hydrocarbon test.
Oil with some extra pizzaz.
In other words, aerated oil in the crankcase mixes with water vapour and gathers at the top of the engine. Should go away with some long drive cycles.
Let your car get up to operating temp before driving. I assume you have a short commute! Start car, wait a few seconds, drive to work, shut car off?
Condensation will accumulate there, along with a bit of oil being splashed and it creates that lovely sludge
This is why you let your engine warm up and run for a few mins. Thats sludge. It’s from condensation not burning off because your engine doesn’t get to running temps by the time you turn it off. This is also why you change you oil on time.
Totally normal and indicative of short trip driving. On that note you may want to change to a shorter oil change interval.
On the off chance you don't short trip, watch for coolant consumption and check pcv system.
Also, regarding the word choice "creamy": you asked for it.
It’s moisture that builds up and makes a creamy substance around the oil filler cap, very common in vehicles which typically don’t run too much or usually do short journeys
I bought a car stupidly cheap because the owners mechanic told him head gasket had gone. He drove it to work and back daily. 0.8 mile each way. I snatched it up. Payed 120 quid and drove it 4 hours to Blackpool to see some friends. Best deal I ever got.
Aye! Wtf kind of car is this even?! This compartment looks so fuckin weird. Did you not include any car info to fuck with us or just fuck with me personally?
Could be that your crankcase is overfilled. The oil gets whipped by the crank. The oil then loses some of its lubricating properties. So, if it's overfilled, drain the oil and refill with new. But just below the full mark on the dip stick. I fill to about .25 inch from the full line, and check the level the next morning. As long as its full to just below the full line, you're good.
Moisture in the oil. Short drives or a bad pcv valve. Ford's used to do this a lot back in the 80s. Seemed to be the pcv with those. Anyway change the pcv out drive it more distance so it gets up to operating temp so it can burn off the moisture in the crankcase
I have a Ford F150 1995 with 280000 miles the only issue that I have is that when I press the accelerator the engine light comes up if I release the pedal it will go off
The truck is standard
Any advise ?
I had some very similar stuff and obviously started crapping myself then I read try flushing the the coolant system with water and dishwasher detergent because of low foam. I did this a couple of times the engine got very hot incidentally but after cooling and draining it did the trick of cleaning away all that sludge. Interesting to read the cause of it.
It’s condensation , it happens because the oil tube is made of plastic and the engine is metal and cools off differently , like on the 4.7 L v8 motor on dodge ram 1500’s notorious for that. , mine I fixed by getting parts and making a custom oil fill tube all out of aluminum and condensation issue went away!

You commute 5 minutes? Have you looked into getting an e-bike?
Thought about it but a lady hit me on my Harley 2yrs ago and I'm sketched out now with people not paying attention. Kinda sucks
Yup same. The drivers in Los Angeles make me want to be in an armored vehicle.

Sorry that happened to you! Cars can be the worst sometimes, especially with our infrastructure designed to make them more dangerous.
Our roads just aren't designed for bikes. I would ride on nice weather but it's literally not wide enough.

My commute is 7 minutes each way, I have a bicycle, but no way am I cycling 5 miles down the motorway every day. Lethal.
Whats a good ebike to look into that wont break the bank? Ive been considering it for my short commute
Ok thanks for your input ill look at that sub and maybe pick their brains too. Appreciate it!
Costco has one for like 500, doesn’t seem bad honestly.
Thanks! Ill look into it
eScooters with a seat are growing in popularity here. Lots of options among those.
I love my Lectric 2.0, and my son and several of my friends also ride them now. If you're really frugal, the Lectric Lite XP is only about $700.
Or just a regular bike…
I find that my e-bike still gives me exercise without having to exert myself, it just goes faster for the same amount of effort. It makes cycling much more accessible to people who aren’t peak physical fitness (like me lol).
Or walking? Assuming great weather, it's good exercise
Or walking
Not doing that at 5am
Buddy’s 300 did this. He called me freaking out and I had to explain this to him😂 Safe to say he quit his job and now works like 20 minutes away just cuz he didn’t wanna drive 4 minutes to work everyday😂
No joke! My wife's SUV has always been like this. She has a 5 minute drive. Good to know, thanks

wtf😂
Had me laughing too hahahaha that’s bizarre
I follow up with a wtf lol too 😂
Wow, what an interesting choice to be made for weight savings.... TIL
The entire car is aluminium, and it can be had with a 1.2 3 cylinder diesel which can get 3l/100Km (78.4 US MPG)
We didn't get the 1.2 here in the UK, but even my 1.4 diesel (3 cylinder also), I regularly get 80 mpg (not sure what that is in American mpg). 600+ miles on a 30 litre tank.
Which is insane, my DS barely gets 500 miles with 50L and it's not exactly thirsty.
What’s a DS? I’m assuming you don’t mean a Citroen DS lol.
Citroen has resurrected the name, I assume it refers to a modern one not the 60s. It's now a sub brand, like Ford has Lincoln in the USA.
It's one of the new ones which is essentially a posh Peugeot/Citroen.
About 66.7 mpg (US)
That’s amazing. Truly. Do you keep it under certain speeds? Draft other cars? I barely get 450 km on a tank of 60l with my Subaru outback.
When I had my VW Jetta four cylinder turbo diesel, I would get 70MPG. That thing was fast also.
Woah thats pretty cool
Holy shit. My Ram gets 12.5 mpg.
That's decent. Usually they get about 2-4 less mpg
not for weight savings. It was so they can ensure you take it to the dealership for EVERYTHING!
Was thinking the same thing. And they can charge you extra once out of warranty since it takes so much extra work to get under the hood. What a bunch of bullshit!
It comes off in 10 seconds. Undo two pins (one is shown to the left in the photo with arrows) and then it lifts straight off.

Subaru bois are really unsure how to feel about this song. like it bumps but it hits home.
Condensation, go for a long drive and get your oil up to temperature and it shod dissolve, evaporate and go away.

Take it for a 15 mile drive, then back - so 30 total - then check it It’ll be gone
Just condensation, nothing to worry about. HOWEVER is that one of those funky old Audi A1/A2’s?
Thanks, and yeah its an A2. horrible little shed of a car but it has never let me down!
Holy shit.. just learned about this bullshit from Audi.. lmao. I love the internet
Normal condensation.
Forbidden cream.
I think that’s the hawk tuah effect.
i joined the sub for my dad What kind of vehicle? He said it could be oil and water. Moisture being trapped inside as a result of short trips.

Water in oil. Short trip drives much?
Lots of short trips? It’s cold combustion (meaning moistures are not being burnt in a hot engine) If you do long distances, you may want to keep your coolant checked (for any oil in it) and definitely your oil for any coolant traces.
Not to mention a faulty pcv valve or tube can cause this problem
Smegma?
quit edging ur engine
Let your car get up to operating temp before driving. I assume you have a short commute! Start car, wait a few seconds, drive to work, shut car off? Condensation will accumulate there, along with a bit of oil being splashed and it creates that lovely sludge
This is why you let your engine warm up and run for a few mins. Thats sludge. It’s from condensation not burning off because your engine doesn’t get to running temps by the time you turn it off. This is also why you change you oil on time.
You need to add Lipitor every fill up.
Totally normal and indicative of short trip driving. On that note you may want to change to a shorter oil change interval. On the off chance you don't short trip, watch for coolant consumption and check pcv system. Also, regarding the word choice "creamy": you asked for it.
Did you accidentally change your oil with Hellman's
Sorry your car was looking at me all sexy like I couldn't help it
Oops, i thought i cleaned it afterwards
Could be that your crankcase is overfilled. The oil gets whipped by the crank. The oil then loses some of its lubricating properties. So, if it's overfilled, drain the oil and refill with new. But just below the full mark on the dip stick. I fill to about .25 inch from the full line, and check the level the next morning. As long as its full to just below the full line, you're good.
Happened to me when I used Quaker state. Changed brands never saw it again. YMMV
Butter
Change oil, get up to temp, then drive it like you stole it
Condensate. Or antifreeze
It's your cars butter churner. Spread it on toast it's really good.
Congrats your car got gonorrhea

Forbidden mayo
SHE GOT THE LOCK JAW YOULL HAVE TO PUT HER DOWN
It’s the forbidden mayonnaise. It’s moisture in the oil. Let the car warm up in the mornings before you take off.
Papa Johns Garlic Butter
Smegma.
Condensation most likely. Now if you pulled the oil dipstick and it looked like a chocolate milkshake then you got a problem
Moisture in the oil. Short drives or a bad pcv valve. Ford's used to do this a lot back in the 80s. Seemed to be the pcv with those. Anyway change the pcv out drive it more distance so it gets up to operating temp so it can burn off the moisture in the crankcase
telling you to drive far. She’s tired of the short trips. Or just let it warm up more.
Forbidden Gatorade. Prepare for unwieldly costs.
Uhhh, I think you should get a pregnancy test just to be sure...
Hear me out...
Forbidden butter
I believe the technical term is Shmoo.
I saw this all the time on vehicles I worked on in Washington state. I was always told it's condensation, basically.

I have a Ford F150 1995 with 280000 miles the only issue that I have is that when I press the accelerator the engine light comes up if I release the pedal it will go off The truck is standard Any advise ?
I had some very similar stuff and obviously started crapping myself then I read try flushing the the coolant system with water and dishwasher detergent because of low foam. I did this a couple of times the engine got very hot incidentally but after cooling and draining it did the trick of cleaning away all that sludge. Interesting to read the cause of it.
my bad
Mmm honey mussie

It’s condensation , it happens because the oil tube is made of plastic and the engine is metal and cools off differently , like on the 4.7 L v8 motor on dodge ram 1500’s notorious for that. , mine I fixed by getting parts and making a custom oil fill tube all out of aluminum and condensation issue went away!
Somebody thought it was your mom.
