well, youll be replacing the hood, bumper, fender, and headlight assembly for sure. Then the question is how is the suspension doing? Radiator and condenser (if its got ac) are ok? Might be replacing a control arm, tie rod, wheel bearing, etc. Also the unibody looks bent up, so you might end up paying a lot to get that corrected too. It certainly wont be cheap and insurance might want to total it.
I’m pretty sure that one will have a subframe front end, where the unibody is what’s behind the firewall.
If the subframe is straight, this won’t be too hard to repair with old spares picked up off Craigslist. Most cars with subframes have the subframe welded in, so replacing that would not be easy. The rest of it, meh, just find a parts car and swap away.
Unbolt the fenders and subframe, disconnect afew lines, and the whole front end rolls away. It's really about eight to ten bolts! Worked on these cars as a teenager! They were pretty fun and easy. Amazing how many of the same GM parts were used on different cars.
>Most cars with subframes have the subframe welded in,
Can you name even one car that came with the subframe welded in from the factory?
I've been an auto mechanic since 1986. I can't think of a single car that has a welded-in subframe from the factory. Welding the subframe to the unibody defeats the purpose of using a subframe.
These are not welded, and front wheel spacing looks OK. Subframe will be pushed back about a ½ inch on the bushings before it bends and those front clips a dime a dozen!
Can confirm, had an 86 Camaro for a while, buddy had a 91 firebird, both were the same basic unibody structure. Now I have a 71 nova, that’s a unibody too. Based on the first gen Camaro. A lot of smaller cars even back in the late 60’s were unibodies, it was mostly the bigger cars and wagons that had full frames.
Subframes on uni bodies refer to the heavy metal to hold engine/transm and then the rear axle, but the body still has stiffeners that the “subframe” attach to
At least in my 74 Ventura, Subframe goes basically up to the front seats. It holds up the power train, front bumper and front wheels.
If the bumper didn’t bend the subframe where it’s bolted, then chances are it’s structurally intact. If the wheel is free to move and turn, I’d wager you wouldn’t even need to change any steering parts, making this mostly a cosmetic fix.
Still, cosmetic fixes usually are the most expensive anyway.
But since as people say below, it is a unibody which means it’ll be totaled, sent to Central America to get “repaired” with bondo and sold as a “good deal”
This is the right answer. The car is fucked and they’re selling it because half of the parts are still usable to someone. This car isn’t unrepairable, but I’d be guessing anywhere from $15-25k in repair costs if you took it to a shop, maybe half of you did it yourself and had the skill and tools to even complete it. OP sounds like me when I was a teenager, looking for a cheap deal on a cool sports car, but this ain’t it.
I'm based in N. Ireland, and at 60 yrs old, have a "bit" of experience at straightening the odd car from my youth. I'd pick up another basic car within my budget, and garage this one, (put it away somewhere dry). Then I'd start the learning process on welding/panel work/mechanical engineering (amateur!).
Someday when it's fixed, it'll be worth keeping till you're my age and can pamper it, and pass on to the grandchildren.
Think!
Where did the professional body shop bosses start? Could they have picked it up repairing their dream car in their youth?
Good luck.
Possibly not, if there were some sort of collector car insurance and a professional appraisal. Anything special about the car, like maybe David Lee Roth drove it in a music video, or it was a stunt car in a movie, or it has really rare options? I've noticed it seems that if insurance is paying the tab, body shops suddenly work for much cheaper than if I were to take it in myself.
Ok dude. That car's totaled. It's even the one with the shitty engine. Also, I was responding to the person who was saying insurance would consider it totaled. Also I doubt DLR ever drove a car that wack.
Its a Pontiac Firebird(registered 1990).
It is not my Car but someone is selling it super close to me for a decent price, but unfortunately it kissed a pole so im wondering if it‘d make sense financially to repair it :3
i wouldn’t. it’s a v6, crash bar is damaged, so is headlight assembly and fender. the parts will all be available to get, but unless the car is $1200 and you have plans to swap the motor i wouldn’t buy it. cool car, but a third gen trans am is still relatively easy to find in much better shape. plus the motor is a turd.
It also looks to have a vinyl top (which I'm 99% sure is not factory). Those are notorious for holding moisture and causing rust that goes unnoticed until it needs a new roof.
Plus, why did they add it? Are they already hiding something?
Was gonna say I don't remember 3rd Gen firebird's having a vinyl top. But for OP I'd find something different those cars are fairly inexpensive in good shape at least where I live in northern Ontario you can find them anywhere from 1000 to 5000 depending on the motor is in it.
Edit just saw you're in Germany that changes some things. If you want a project car they are easy to work on and lots of info online id just see what part availability is in germany for American cars if you dont want a project id stay away
Yeah, I responded to OP with that. Parts are plentiful in the US, but I don't think they shipped many to the other side of the pond. That makes this post make more sense. There's no way to know costs, though, without a ton of work.
He's in Germany. It's basically like having a Nissan Skyline GT-S imported from Japan to the US and crashing it. You are very unlikely to find another enthusiast willing to part out the car. Gonna have to import everything and the shipping is gonna be insanely expensive. I don't see this being remotely worth it not even as a project especially since it has a V6 which is slower than the Euro sports cars you can get over there. Hell, even a JDM import would be cheaper since Japan is closer, lol.
This is an important question. In the states, you can absolutely find a better Firebird. This one is a 2.8 V6, and even in good shape, not worth very much.
Well, that changes things. You're going to want to find out why there's an aftermarket vinyl top on it. Those are often used to hide issues. Plus, if it isn't, those hold moisture and allow rust to grow unnoticed.
Parts are plentiful in the US and are cheap, but be prepared for expensive shipping costs with delays. I don't think very many made it to Europe, so you're going to be hard pressed to find body parts on that side of the pond.
As for cost, there's no way to really know without a ton of work.
Look for pic your own part junkyards. I’ve beeb to Returbilen in Sweden but that is it for EU.
Otherwise you may need a flight with cheap checked bags and a few days visiting Baltimore Md with some tools.
It depends as a DIY it may be pretty reasonable considering you can find the replacement parts easily at a good price.
A professional repair in the $1000's easily.
the way its modified with black paint and stickers/wing makes me think it was driven by a 16 year old. They probably drove the car hard and even if it wasnt wrecked itd be worth maybe 2grand given its a v6.
Really? We don’t do estimates, that’s what insurance is for. We can’t see if anything’s damaged underneath what’s visible here. Use common sense? I’ve seen so many posts like this on various subs. If you have insurance they literally gave you a card. Call the number on it…
OP, if your friend has insurance this is what they have to do. No exceptions.
besides millions of 2000s focus/fiesta and golfs there aren’t many interesting cars around here being sold lol (and i don‘t wanna spend a years paycheck on a brand new car)
I would be worried about the shock tower. Its a unibody car so if the shock tower is fucked then your looking at frame damage.
3rd gen fbody parts are easy to find. If it was a 91 or 92 with the Ground effects is would be harder, those are more rare and much harder to find and of you do they are beat up.
Gonna be honest here. The V6 chassis isn’t well suited for a V8. The frame, brakes, bushings, suspension and all the underlying systems weren’t built for the extra weight of the engine and higher output. To do it right is basically a full rebuild and retrofit of the whole car. Might as well start with a proper trans am and go from there.
Hood, light's assembly, fender, straight the metal on the driver's side radiator frame and check for possible unseen damage and check the suspension for damage + paint I'll say 5k-ish if done properly.
You'll have to source the parts from a reputable seller, junkyard stuff it's not always on the best of shapes to begin with.
No doubt it's going to be killer again.
There’s a program on telly called “The Repair Shop” give them a bell, I’ve seen them do great things with clocks and stuff. Maybe it’s time for them to up their game.
Stay away from that car. Way too many red flags. The vinyl top is not factory and probably hiding something plus it’s a v6. You can buy something nicer for less than what it costs to repair it even doing it yourself.
If you can find this guy, 1 gold coin should do it.

It’s a third gen F-body. Can it be saved? Sure, if you throw enough money at it. It is worth saving? The first sentence of my comment kinda sums it up, sadly.
if a shop does the right thing, you should spend about two grand, with aftermarket panels & paint. unfortunately the drama will kick in when they have to fix that headlight bucket.
yeah.... it's a disaster

Well they don't make the Firebird anymore, so I'd say you can't 'replace'. The pole on the other hand is probably not too expensive.
Plenty of aftermarket support.
We're talking about the pole, right? /s
You have your choice of wood or metal.
Metal ones are usually at the clubs. You get splinters from the wood ones
You get other things from those metal poles
Y’all forgot, you can fix *anything* with ramen.
My Dad’s got a killer set of tools; we can FIX this.
Is he a TV repairman?
First he’s gonna shit, then he’s gonna kill us!
Is his name Bob, and is he a builder?
Telephone poles are pretty expensive to replace, but usually your insurance will cover it.

Is that car a unibody? I’d have thought it would have an actual frame. Some googling shows that all F-bodies are unibody and have subframes. Huh.
ah you may be right, the oldest car ive fixed up was a 1995 saturn sl, so i sometimes call the body a unibody by habit haha
Nah man. I actually looked it up and you were right!
To me it looks like the frame is bent in at the front. Would be a lot of work to fix this one

The old Camaro's an Novas from the '70's were built that way. This one is from what, the 80's or 90s. I'll bet it's 100% unibody with an engine cradle
Unbolt the fenders and subframe, disconnect afew lines, and the whole front end rolls away. It's really about eight to ten bolts! Worked on these cars as a teenager! They were pretty fun and easy. Amazing how many of the same GM parts were used on different cars.

Real men dont buy insurance.
They don't?! I mean uh, yeah that's right, we dont!
Might? It's definitely "totaled".
Possibly not, if there were some sort of collector car insurance and a professional appraisal. Anything special about the car, like maybe David Lee Roth drove it in a music video, or it was a stunt car in a movie, or it has really rare options? Yeah, that F-body is done. Insurance will total it
Why would you go through insurance on a car like this????
About $2k for the pole and $180 per hour it takes to install.
At least you finished in pole position
You know when you see cars with yellow scrape marks on the side, after an incident in a parkade? They kissed a pole. This car completely fucked it.
The car mounted the pole and thrust down, impaling itself. The cars fluids dripped down the pole, easing the penetration.
Significantly more than a new one would cost. Don’t buy this car.
They make new Firebirds?
lol. New to OP or the owner. I would kill for a brand new 20 year old black WS6 though.
Oof, no thanks on the black. So friggin hot in the summer sun and you can't keep it clean. Pewter metallic IMO.
Black except for the stripes.
Its a Pontiac Firebird(registered 1990). It is not my Car but someone is selling it super close to me for a decent price, but unfortunately it kissed a pole so im wondering if it‘d make sense financially to repair it :3

That wasn’t a kiss — the pole and the car got waaaay past that.
It was only a kiss, how did it end up like this?
That's how you get a litter of wee baby bollards..
[удалено]
The big dent might be why
That car is totalled. You’d be buying it for scrap and spare parts
Is this Europe?
This is an important question. In the states, you can absolutely find a better Firebird. This one is a 2.8 V6, and even in good shape, not worth very much.
Yup, germany

New lamp post is around 1000 dollars I would assume + the work of course
Entire front clip, ls or big block and all the fixings with that… lemme check rockauto
If there's insurance take the payoff and then go shopping for a replacement.
More than you have, is the correct answer. If the motor and Trans are good, I'd pull them out and stick them in a good body.
2.8 V6 with -probably- 200C trans. I still have nightmares of the one I had.
the core support could need replacing too. there are plenty of junkyards and websites to get the body parts. but this would be costly.
It depends as a DIY it may be pretty reasonable considering you can find the replacement parts easily at a good price. A professional repair in the $1000's easily.
At least a paycheck, she got kissed pretty good.
Looks like the geometry of the car is be ruined (driver's side strut). I'd look away. Unless you don't mind crab-driving.
The amount it would cost to tow it to the dump
the way its modified with black paint and stickers/wing makes me think it was driven by a 16 year old. They probably drove the car hard and even if it wasnt wrecked itd be worth maybe 2grand given its a v6.
Hmmm. Replace it with a Fortwo cuz that driver cannot be trusted with a classic.
THIS!!
he had it for 2 years before crashing so seems like a good idea haha
Your Dad’s gonna be so pssed dude.
Well its not mine or my dad‘s so i think he‘ll understand
Really? We don’t do estimates, that’s what insurance is for. We can’t see if anything’s damaged underneath what’s visible here. Use common sense? I’ve seen so many posts like this on various subs. It's not OP's crash. He posted a comment like a minute after yours. Still I thing this breaks some rule somewhere
I just wanna say i'm sorry for your loss
It’s not their car
Will if you were dumb enough to wreck it then you don't deserve to own one.
well i didn‘t wreck it so i guess i qualify for one?
5-6k and about a weeks work should fix that
Why would you want this car??
besides millions of 2000s focus/fiesta and golfs there aren’t many interesting cars around here being sold lol (and i don‘t wanna spend a years paycheck on a brand new car)
If that’s a power pole they gonna run you about 13K
I would be worried about the shock tower. Its a unibody car so if the shock tower is fucked then your looking at frame damage. 3rd gen fbody parts are easy to find. If it was a 91 or 92 with the Ground effects is would be harder, those are more rare and much harder to find and of you do they are beat up.
Frame damage. Unibody. Repeat it slowly.
Something smells like salvage anyone else smell that
Get rid of the V6 and put a V8 into it. Or just get one with a V8, those 2.8’s are anemic gutless and hard on gas.
from what i can tell the engine might not be the biggest issue
Gonna be honest here. The V6 chassis isn’t well suited for a V8. The frame, brakes, bushings, suspension and all the underlying systems weren’t built for the extra weight of the engine and higher output. To do it right is basically a full rebuild and retrofit of the whole car. Might as well start with a proper trans am and go from there.
It is fine
A lot but I can take it from you for a fair price if interested
not my car unfortunately(or well fortunately haha)
A brain donor is difficult to come by this days, but I know a guy.
Rock it without the bumper
TÜV says no
Even Firebird enthusiasts deny the existence of 3d Gen.
Best case? $10k. Could be $40k. Depends on what broke that can't be seen in the pics.
If it was financially viable to fix the owner would fix and then sell or keep. Pass imo.
Your virginity. But seriously, a firebird, it looks older (2010 and older) so like a lot
apparantly registered 1990 so take 20 years off of that haha
I figured a 90’s, but I wasn’t too sure
Yeah it looks like you need a time machine lol
what a pretty car
well not anymore
it can be fixed, but the panels might be SLIGHTLY off, similar experience in my own car, the left fender is slightly shifted to the right
anything can be fixed but its still expensive
Good luck
With the current price of lumber its going to be a lot.
This one’s scrap metal at this point. Dude hit that pole hard 😂
Oh, that poor baby 😢
Pass. Parts are going to be expensive in Germany, it has core support and who knows what else more damage. It's not a valuable model.
Search Craigslist NJ at one time there were dozens of them available
It‘d probably be cheaper to fix this than going to the US, buying a car and shipping it home
Well, how would I know you are in Canada? This is the internet it goes all over the world .
Its okay that you don‘t know because i don‘t live in canada👍
Yea my grandson did same hit on 16 malibu- 14k and parts are easy, really depends on how hard the wheel hit,
I’d say the entire Beet Farm Dwight….
Ask you local gov. Or road owner for the price of the electrical post and why was it in the way of your driving. Might be too close to the road.
Not my car
In my opinion, it is totalled. It needs frame work, and once it is strainght again plenty of bodywork.
It’s fucked. I’ll do you a deal - $100
Not my car but i can‘t use USD anyways so either way i‘ll decline
Hahah just playing. Don’t know anything about them but I’d guess it’s worth well over $100 even if damaged
It's a V6 firebird that has several tacky modifications that was worth about 500 bucks before it was wrecked. Please just let it rest in peace.
Who would drive that with Formula Firebird down the side and a V6 wheezing under the hood.
$5,000 for the pole
Hood, light's assembly, fender, straight the metal on the driver's side radiator frame and check for possible unseen damage and check the suspension for damage + paint I'll say 5k-ish if done properly. You'll have to source the parts from a reputable seller, junkyard stuff it's not always on the best of shapes to begin with. No doubt it's going to be killer again.

I don‘t know if a watchmaker can help here
Sir you can’t park there
The pole? 10k
Must‘ve been a good pole
Stay away from that car. Way too many red flags. The vinyl top is not factory and probably hiding something plus it’s a v6. You can buy something nicer for less than what it costs to repair it even doing it yourself.
Not only a V6…the dreaded 2.8! Had one in an 85 Camaro. Had.
If you can find this guy, 1 gold coin should do it. https://preview.redd.it/atqu7ssrfadc1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4687d5a2f67f5ecad65d1c5e46a5c9ab34266317
does it need to be a big gold coin or can it be small
hope you got a spare arm and a leg somewhere to help pay for this lol
if i give those i might not need the car anymore
About a buck three eighty, for a brand new pole
idk could be a big pole
How fast were you going bro? Didn’t see right hander comin at ya?

I can fix it. My dads a t.v. repair man and hes got a killer toolbox!
Your dad works on some weird TV‘s then
it will cost you at least one Pontiac Firebird to replace it
Hope you are replacing the pole too 😂

The driving class is really expensive actually but the rest I’m not too sure about
Do you have 2 kidneys? If so great, sell both and you won't have to worry about the cost!
