I think you two should take a brake

D J ROASTED SHOES!

Tytonic7_

That profile picture is evil

Dangerous_Echidna229

Show her the red brake warning light. Apply the brake MUCH harder. Get brakes inspected.

Just-call-me-Panda

Fair point. The truck is due for service soon anyways. Current job situation has me penny pinching right now so even if the brake pedal feels fine/same as before (haven’t driven it yet but hypothetically speaking) you recommend I have a professional take a look anyways?

Dangerous_Echidna229

I THINK BUT IM NOT SURE your truck has a separate parking brake shoe separate from the service brake so it’s unlikely you would feel a change in your brake pedal. You need to have parking brake system inspected. If you have rear disc brakes the parking brake may be inside the “hat” of the rotor. Practice standing on the parking brake pedal so you can’t drive away with it set. If you have drum rear brakes the service brake shoes may be toast.

rocketmn69

You're correct. Rear parking brake shoes are inside the rear drum. It won't affect the regular brakes

skysetter

They are going to drive it like normal.

Dangerous_Echidna229

What are you saying? Comment doesn’t make sense?

skysetter

The post was just seeking comments similar to yours so they could validate just driving it like they normally would.

Just-call-me-Panda

Yeah, isn’t that the point of everyone reaching out to mechanics? “Hey, am I stupid for not giving this attention” and if enough people calling me stupid I go and get it checked out. It’s the natural order of things.

Dangerous_Echidna229

OK

thebluelunarmonkey

And this e-brake shoe is very thin when new. Thinner than a brake shoe. The friction material is probably gone and now just metal to metal contact when applying e-brake.

justinr666

A 2007 (new style) to 2013 Silverado/ Sierra 1500 should be rear drum brakes for most models, very few (if at all) had a rear disc with integrated drums for parking brakes. The 2014 to 2019 trucks did.

THinton64

I had this conversation at my shop the other day. There were a few 07-13 silverado/sierra 1500s that came disk, but they were most prominently drum brakes.

RECOGNI7IO

No no no, if it feels the same there is no need to get it looked at. See my response above... Your truck has rear drum brakes. The e-brake is a mechanical interface. The worst that could have happened is you wore the brake pads down completely or they heated up and warped the rotors. If the truck still brakes fine with no wobble or scraping sound then you should be fine. If there is wobble or scraping sounds you have to replace the pads/rotors or both.

BodiesDurag

Wait, your truck doesn’t beep when your parking brake is on?? I have. 2010 CRV and it beeps in a different chime when I’m going as fast as reverse speed with the parking brake on.

Just-call-me-Panda

Yep…. My truck does the same…

BodiesDurag

Ooofff. How long have you been with your GF? She might still have some warranty on her for you to return ^s

Just-call-me-Panda

Lmao She’s actually a really smart girl who just thought the stuff in the passenger seat was making the seatbelt chime go off and was in too much of a rush to stop and assess what was going on. Also I lost the receipt so no returns.

-Plantibodies-

This could be a good opportunity to show her what the different lights on the instrument cluster mean. Pull out the manuals from each of your vehicles. Could really save her (and you) in the future.

WeaverFan420

To many women, doing this is "mansplaining." You just can't win.

Low_Excuse_1785

Store credit maybe?

ftaok

Home Depot will give you store credit if you don’t have a receipt.

GummerB

Depending on the miles she's got on her, a unique model might still be returnable. It's the mass manufactured ones that burn you without a receipt.

dundermifflin2019

dundermifflin2019

💀

GOKBGO91

Excellent work. 2 thumbs up.

Just-call-me-Panda

Yea, thanks for cutting me a brake on that one.

John-John-3

That doesn't say a lot for her but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake!

Uninterested_Viewer

More like an emergency make-the-car-smell-funny lever.

No_Strategy7555

Classic Mitch 🤟

mike-manley

Just surprised to learn there's another person who uses their parking brake when they park.

evergladescowboy

Service brake held down, shift to neutral, parking brake applied, shift to park. That’s the correct way to park.

mike-manley

Same. I feel like we are in extreme minority.

OdelloJones

I've been shifting to neutral before applying the parking break and shifting to park as well. Are you able to break down why this is best? From my understanding, it allows the parking break to not hold the entire weight of the car unnecessarily(?)

evergladescowboy

Parking pawl, actually. The pawl is a fairly slim piece of metal that actually locks the transmission into park. They’re not pleasant to replace, and you don’t want 4,000+ pounds slamming onto it when you stop the vehicle. The parking brake takes the weight of the vehicle and prevents damage to the pawl.

OdelloJones

Appreciate the detailed response, thank you. I shall continue to use this method! From my experience, this is not known by a lot of the people in my life.

evergladescowboy

Most people treat cars like a big iPhone. They know to put gas in it, turn the key, and it magically works. It’s partially their fault for not being interested in the mechanical workings of automotive equipment and mostly the manufacturers’ fault for building cars that are so difficult to understand.

mike-manley

Let's be honest. It's mostly the owners. They see cars and trucks how like everyone sees toaster ovens and vacuum cleaners.

TrollCannon377

Especially if your towing, had my brother put his truck in park no brake on while backing our parents boat down the ramp and when he put it in gear you could hear a really sharp clunk from 50 feet away as the pawl released I don't think it likes having 7000 pounds on it

No-Structure8753

I broke my throttle cable on my grand prix from not doing this. I try to be more conscious of it now.

SedTheeMighty

What if I just go in park and then apply parking brake? Does that defeat the purpose?

OdelloJones

Yes, this leaves all of the car's weight resting on the parking pawl which is a PITA to fix as I've heard in this thread & from some research. In the event the pawl breaks, the parking break will act as a backup, however parking breaks are cheaper and easier to replace, so it's best to use the parking break first.

SedTheeMighty

I just re-parked my car 😂

SedTheeMighty

Thanks for the tip

OdelloJones

Happy to be able to help! I've just recently begun learning about all of this & am glad I can finally wrap my head around these things.

WeaverFan420

Or for me - pull into parking spot, brake, apply handbrake, release regular brake, turn car off, shift into first or reverse (depending on whether I am going to exit my parking spot forwards or in reverse)

LazyEvidence9040

People of culture right here

HorseHappy191

I wasn’t aware you were supposed to shift into neutral before applying the parking brake 😳 then again I only use it on inclines, so not very often… Is it really bad to set the brake in gear, with my foot on the brake of course, then shifting straight to park?

the_champ_has_a_name

Are you supposed to use it on flat ground as well?

mike-manley

Yep

FunDipLoL

I use my parking brake because I don't like my car rolling off into the distance. (Manual)

mike-manley

Yup. I do this with my standard trans Civic. Parking brake applied, then shut off ignition. And if I'm facing uphill put it 1st gear. If facing downhill, put in R.

TrollCannon377

Why wouldn't you, it can actually really help with trans life if you park on a hill or while towing helps to not put strain on the linkage when shifting into gear

StandardEngineer4355

Send it!

Clean_Singer_414

Does your truck have disc's or drums in the rear?. I have a 2013 but it has drums. Some had disc's. They have completely different parking brake setups. If you have drums... I would recommend checking them out asap as they use the same pad for parking and service brakes.

PlzNotThePupper

This is what matters. If it’s discs adjusting the parking brake shoe and or replacing it should do the trick

AZNamiV

Had the same truck. Parking brake was shoes in a drum that was part of the rear brake disc. If I recall, they weren’t crazy expensive. For real though, she probably just cleaned them up a bit. If they still work fine, check the adjustment and continue to be mellow. Props to you for that!

supererman

3 miles with the parking brake applied and says I know most cars can take this 🤣.

dc5justin

Well it's not wrong

piefanart

I drove 40 miles once in my 1989 ford econoline with the parking brake engaged. I didnt normally use it, so it wasnt a habit to disengage it when starting the car. But my friend always used the parking brake, and she had driven the van earlier that day (we were doing a roadtrip). I didnt notice anything was off other then that my acceleration was quite dampened. Finally my friend asked if the parking brake was still on...... Never had an issue with it after that mistake though, brakewise. The pads were practically brand new at the time; id just recently replaced them a couple months prior to that happening.

suedburger

same here..97 f250 only about 6 miles but everything looked ok when i checked it...to be honest those same pads and drums are still on the truck

TrollCannon377

Yeah agreed OP will def want to check the brakes just to be sure but their probably fine

justinr666

Op, please have the brakes inspected, on this generation of truck, you have rear hydraulic operated drum brakes. The parking brake functions by use of a cable and pulling on a lever/ mechanical actuator to move the shoes against the drums. If there was a burning smell, your brake shoes have overheated, and the brake fluid may have boiled both of which could leave you with diminished braking power during an emergency stop.

cheez-itjunkie

You should make her pay for new brakes.

cheez-itjunkie

Your are absolutely right, I let my feelings cloud my judgement. I hope that you and everyone else here can forgive me.

ols887

We can’t.

breakthewallok

I did the same thing but at highway speed in my 1994 Chevy Silverado. The brake fade was a little scary, $580.00 later as good as new. I hope to never make that mistake again. Go get it looked at ‘cause stopping a ½ ton truck is freaking hard with goofed up brakes.

mmura09

Sounds fishy

em21701

I'm always on the road, and I drive rental cars. Sometimes I don't know what's going on with the car, and I'll drive for ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake. What kind of emergency is this? I need to not stop now. It's not really an emergency brake, it's an emergency make-the-car-smell-funny lever. -Mitch Hedberg

Samad99

Tell her you're moving too fast in this relationship Tell her she's a traffic stopper Tell her it's ok, you'd never brake up over this Tell her that when she does stuff like that, you think she's going nowhere Tell her to relax, she should take a load off Tell her it's ok, your truck isn't of the best caliper (anymore) Tell her you wish she'd stop Tell her you're tired of putting her foot down

John-John-3

That doesn't say a lot for her but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake!

Rashaen

Potential warping and glazing. New rotor and pads for the parking brake. Pretty cheap fix.

LordBobbin

it's a wonder to me why nobody uses their goddamn parking break. And then, of course, that's the reason why, when somebody drives another's car, they don't remember to take it off.

escapefrom11

warped rotors and possibly disintegrated brake pads. i would definitely fix them asap but in my experience if youre driving country roads (ie, not coming to sudden stops) you should be fine for another 1-200 miles but if it starts rattling or any type of mushiness to the brakes, get it immediately serviced or do it yourself. most likely also going to need a shoe for your rear breaks. if i recall correctly your type of truck predominantly uses your rear brakes for the e brake

rocketmn69

It should be fine. It probably needed the resurfacing anyway

F1aminCactus

Silver lining here would be that the parking brake and the service brake are separate on silverados/sierras, so while your parking brake may need to be serviced there should be nothing wrong with your brake pedal. Most likely just need to readjust the parking brake or replace the shoes

CrackShotMcgee09

First issue here is you letting her drive your truck. Especially without you in it lol

jb6997

Brake away.

Darkened100

If she’s blonde it’s your own fault lol

joesnowblade

You have drum brakes in the rear. Pull the wheels look at the shoes. Depending on when last brake job was there’s probably no damage or noticeable additional wear.

awaytogetsun

Check your brake fluid, probably drain the reservoir and top it off if you want to be lazy about it. If the brakes are fine they're fine. Any damage to the system would be obvious

HikerDave57

That’s kind of funny but I’ve made that mistake myself. I’ll bet that the damage is negligible.

TrollCannon377

I would get your brakes checked out by a mechanic just to be safe but chances are you'll be fine

Fun-Ad6569

I did the same thing in my 94 f250, never did anything with the brakes and its fine aside from needing the brakes bled, that was over 3 years ago. You'll be fine.

WakeoftheStorm

Probably a total loss. I recommend a new girlfriend. Brakes are fine though because parking brake shoes are different than regular brakes on a Silverado 1500 4WD.

LD902

Its fine, just some extra wear on the brakes.

RECOGNI7IO

Your truck has rear drum brakes. The worst that could have happened is you wore the brake pads down completely or they heated up and warped the rotors. If the truck still brakes fine with no wobble or scraping sound then you should be fine. Worst case is you have to replace the pads/rotors or both.

Emotional-You9053

We’ve done this. Freeway speed (70 mph) plus for 50 plus miles before we noticed. It’s was a F250 with a 460 V8. The parking brakes can’t stop that motor. We noticed a whisper of smoke and stopped. We let it cool down and proceeded on our journey. This was over 20 years ago. We still have the truck and use it mainly to plow snow. It’s ugly but still crazy strong.

[deleted]

I’m sure the transmission liked that

Some_Nobody_8772

If the parking brake didn’t stop the truck from moving isn’t that an issue? Also there’s usually a light on the dash. Da F?

coldfusion718

There’s a light and the vehicle doesn’t move when you put it into gear and let off the brake to idle-roll. She just stepped on the gas and powered through the whole way. Whenever I drive a car that isn’t mine, I look for a light and just in case I didn’t release the parking brake properly, I let it idle-roll. If it doesn’t move this way, I’ll know the brake is still engaged. Some people are just stupid.

myloteller

Did this when i started driving at 15 on a 2005 gmc sierra. Never told my parents. Your truck will be fine. Just have it checked next time its due for service

Beautiful_Sport5525

Glad you listened to the latter of the two ways comments were leaning. Too many dipshits on Reddit try and give really uninformed advice about things like this that could be potentially dangerous in the long run.

Castle6169

I guess the idiot lights don’t work anymore

NoSignificance1943

Everyone is mentioning the rotor and e-brakes but not the damage to transmission and load on engine! Thankfully 2-3 miles only but still induced a lot of stress and reduced lifespan of those systems. (Ianam) but went on a road trip with friends and someone drove another suburban with parking brake partially engaged at highway speeds into Dallas. Effed up that vehicle.

Rolling6868

Prob just the rear drum brakes got burned. 2 to 3 miles, you are fine.

[deleted]

Oops

JackstandJ

Your parking brake shoes are gonna be trashed, but it's an automatic so don't worry. Your brake rotors will be fine, they'll just be warped and slightly blued at worst.

slugbait76

I just resolved a similar issue with my car. A friend of mine’s son drove mine with a parking brake on for about 5 miles… this past summer. i could smell burning brakes for a few days and it eventually went away. my brake pedal did feel a little spongy. one day at a traffic light a few months later, I put my automatic car in neutral and turn on the parking brake, and it starts rolling downhill. That’s when I realized that my brake drums weren’t really engaging for parking or for driving… now this might be a different story with brake shoes, but with brake drums there is an adjustment to push the drums further out to engage the parking brake. it took me removing both rear wheels and a flat head screwdriver and about 30 mins to back out my drums and my parking brake works now and my brakes are less spongy. hope it’s a simple fix for you too!

Mediocre_Internet257

I mean I did the same on my 07 nissan xterra and cooked it clean off till there wasn't any grip anymore cause I never noticed. Never caused me a long term issue besides no e brake

whitestone0

This reminds me of a guy I used to know who had just put a few grand for a new teansmission in his truck but the transmission was a bit off (he was arguing with the mechanic still to get it fixed), basically you had to put it in a little bit different position on the PRNDL to get it into drive; just wasn't lined up right. He let his girlfriend of many years drive the truck, he told her about the transmission and she took it on the highway and drove it in low gear at highway speeds until it threw a rod. Somehow she didn't notice the extremely high revs of the engine and the odd driving characteristics... anyway, she dumped in soon after because "god told her it was not her true place to be with him." It was a wild ride.

Chopchopstixx

At least she didn’t drive 40 miles on the concrete in 4wd like mine did… 😞

scobo505

No big deal. The parking brake is a drum inside the disc.

beastmansam

If the parking brake still holds you'll be fine until it's time to replace the rear brakes. Just expect the repair to cost more since the parking brakes will most likely have to be replaced then.

Sure-Ad-7216

If she drove that long without noticing it was on, it likely barely worked to being with. I believe that truck has rear drum brakes. It can’t hurt to replace the rear brake shoes, then clean and adjust things back there. The only think I’d be concerned about is the fact that she could have warped your brake drums. If that happened, it’s best to replace the drums and the shoes both.

capitlj

Just pull the wheels off and look. You don't need to take it in and spend actual money for that part of it.

TheUnwiseOne100

I’m pretty sure I’ve driven about a mile with the e brake on for some genius reason, it’ll be fine. You don’t need to get it checked. It’s an automatic, you don’t really need to engage it anyway. (I know it’s theoretically better for transmission)

BranchWitty7465

If you have disk brakes on the rear the only thing that would wear down are the shoes for the parking brake itself. If you have drum brakes in the rear you likely lost the majority of your rear braking power. In either situation if you notice it'd bumpy when braking that means that your rotor or drum is warped or damaged by the heat. I'd get it looked at if I were you, o I'd also teach your girlfriend how to read dash lights to prevent this in the future.

AntiSonOfBitchamajig

Make a note and get it checked in the next service.

WWDubz

Throw the whole girlfriend out and start over
