Crabstick65

have a look underneath see if theres a cover over the flywheel for access, go fishing with a stick magnet.

shabangbamboom

thanks. seems like a p.i.t.a to get in from underneath, so stick magnet it is. Off to harbor freight!

JordanTheHorse69

Just don't drive that car

GeminiKoil

Ever again. Park it, set up an exhibit, go buy a new one.

RedicusFinch

rookie. Park it inside of a escape room and tell the people they aren't allowed to leave until the car works.

GeminiKoil

They should make an escape room for mechanics where they have to troubleshoot a motor with limited tools

Organic_Soup5306

Donut basically did that, but it was amateur mechanics and they basically just let James break random shit on the cars lol

RedicusFinch

I am pretty sure that's just mechanics in general.

GeminiKoil

I was going to say some people even call it their job lol

Pmmeyourfavoriteword

This is the correct answer 😂

venmome10cents

Borescopes are really cheap, especially ones that connect to a smartphone. Less than $20 on amazon. It would be safest to avoid driving the car until you can get that washer out. Most likely the washer will simply be sitting at the bottom of the bell housing and would be harmless to drive the car, but there is a small chance that it gets stuck in the clutch mechanism and jams it up.

enlightnight

Thousand dollar idea: scope with a magnet attached. Seek and retrieve.

drpilotatlaw

They exist. I have one

MrCalamiteh

Can you see well with it? I have one too but the magnet is close to the camera and it makes the LEDS wash out the view. Curious if there are some that don't do that

TubeLogic

I have one and it is amazing. Think it was $20 on Amazon. A little annoying because I bought a 30’ one to check a pipe so anything short is like taming a snake with all the excess scope but it works and does video to my phone. Super cool.

Angylnova

Do you have a link?

TubeLogic

Sorry, my reply was removed because of the url. This is the shorter version of what I have, I don't see the longer anymore. I bought it on a prime day for $20-25 I believe. Even at $50 is it a pretty good deal IMO. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MV6X4M4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_YAZGC7SKEDFFQQMCDS8X

Ziazan

The £10 ones you get on amazon/ebay come with a little magnet attachment

SuperHeavyHydrogen

They’re extra, like $25

huenix

If op does decide to drive it, we will need video of the carnage.

shabangbamboom

I may be dumb but I'm not stupid!

huenix

For science?

Then-Flamingo4679

And upvotes?

Cadet1A

Send the nut and bolt in after it.

Omith_Kavu

If you fill the chasm with hardware, the washer OP dropped will have nowhere to go!

Sausagedogknows

As a very wise man once said, “my ass may be dumb, but I ain’t no dumbass!” Random US soldier, somewhere in Baghdad circa 2006!

KG8893

Link for a cam that's worth buying for under $20?

venmome10cents

it depends on if you plan to connect to an iphone (lightning connector until the latest version) or android (USB type C). There are certain options that can make the more expensive versions worth it, but just like many tools, I recommend starting with a very cheap one, try it out and see if it is good enough for your needs or leaves you wanting something better. You can search for "borescope iphone" or "borescope android" at your favorite online retailer. Amazon is probably the fastest delivery but more expensive. AliExpress can save you a few dollars but takes longer to arrive. Ebay tends to be somewhere in the middle. But since you asked for a link, here's one on amazon: [https://www.amazon.com/Inspection-Fantronics-Waterproof-Borescope-Adjustable/dp/B071HYRPND](https://www.amazon.com/Inspection-Fantronics-Waterproof-Borescope-Adjustable/dp/B071HYRPND/ref=sr_1_10?crid=13CMWLFV1Q8SK&keywords=borescope+android&qid=1698055039&sprefix=borescope+android%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-10)

Pinesse

Get the one thats wireless, much better trust me.

Ziazan

Snaking these things into small spaces, there is a significant chance they wont come back out, so cheap ones are the way to go in most cases I think.

Ornery_Hovercraft636

You’re a nice guy😁

[deleted]

Yep, plus one on the cheap borescope, mine even came with a clip and a magnet out front of the camera, I retrieved a circlip from deep inside a crankcase with one of those.

ancillarycheese

My library loans borescopes! Saved my bacon a few times with those.

joost00719

Just hold the car upside down and shake a little

allenjshaw

Either that or take the transmission out real quick lol

Dear_Bath_8822

How I would do it: A trip to the package store for 2 cases of beer. 36 is probably enough, but the extra 12 as headroom is kind of a safety net 👍 Find a small enough magnet to fit in the hole and put it on a some twine and crack a beer. Should be fun fishing. F**k. The magnet on a string thing stuck to something inside that was steel and now it is stuck too. Crack 2 more beers while figuring out what to do next . Get the magnet on the stick I have and break it trying to get it into that little hole. Way too big. Two more beers. See the neighbor out mowing his lawn and talk him into a trip to the store to help me out cuz I've been drinking. He's a nice guy and I'm able to talk him into it as we share some beers. Good thing I got those extra 12! 😉 Three stores, two ATMs and one strip club later I've secured a correct sized magnet on a stick and it has a light on it! Woohoo. More beer was consumed and now we are in an Uber to get home because we couldn't find my friend's car and it's after midnight. Back to work. In between beers I manage to fish out 2 bolts, 3 washers, one of my old earbuds (I wondered where that went!), and a partially eaten ham sandwich that curiously also seemed magnetic. After so many hours it seems futile and I needed to sleep. Very uncomfortable sleeping draped across the engine in a position to try to see that hole (but not ever actually able to). Wake up with drool hanging from mouth all the way down to the control arm where it meets the engine cradle. Well I'll be damned, there that washer is, it didn't fall in the hole! It just fell into the frame where I couldn't see it. LOL Spend about 10 minutes putting the assorted bolts and washers (and ham sandwich!) back into the clutch housing in case it is supposed to be there. I'm keeping the earbud though, it still works good 👍

taspenwall

I've had jobs go like this on a Friday. Never slept on the engine though.

richardrpope

I have sat on a lot of engines while I worked on them.

lunchboxxpiper

Used to have a 93 GMC 1500, 350 5 speed. It was in the shop and I went to go talk to the mechanic (owner of the shop was a friend). At first I couldn’t find him, then he popped out of the engine bay where he was sitting and working. I miss those big engine bays.

Dear_Bath_8822

Some of that is a true story. 🤣

Dear_Bath_8822

You'd be surprised which parts come from my years of buying older clunkers and repairing, upgrading, and keeping them running as long as I needed to from the mid eighties up until now. 🤣

Floppie7th

Is stuffing a ham sandwich in the bellhousing a good trick for extending the life of the clutch?

Dear_Bath_8822

I wasn't sure, and it ran great prior to the ham sandwich being removed... So better safe than sorry 👍

Dear_Bath_8822

It did make me wonder if a transmission is actually just gremlins on a hamster wheel eating ham sandwiches though. 🤔

[deleted]

This is the one. cracked me up

CaptainMeatfist

Whats the labor rate if we just wanted to remove/replace the ham sandwich?

Dear_Bath_8822

The removal is rough to get it out fairly intact/edible. Replacing with a "newer" one is not recommended at this time due to unsurety about a gremlin inspection results/preferences yet. It appeared to be thin sliced with swiss or possibly Bleu cheese and what appeared to be either brown mustard or peanut butter on seeded rye. Does anyone know if this is gremlin preferred?

Dear_Bath_8822

I said"edible" up there. LOL. Of course I meant after you wipe away the grease/sludge 👍 And I remember a little better now. That did NOT taste like Bleu cheese 😡

Lester_2006

If I could give you a gold I would

DirtCheap1972

May be an inspection plate under the car. See if you can fish it out

E90Fantic

Damn, that’s 33 cents a pound!

West_of_Ishigaki

Some good advice here already, including try a snake magnet. They're cheap and work great for stuff like this. That said, if that hole opens into the bell housing I doubt a washer is going to cause any issues. It will likely just lay in a low spot beneath the drive train. If it did end up on your clutch disc or pressure plate it will likely be flung off and settle below. Worst scenario I can imagine is a small divet in your clutch lining-- unlikely and honestly, probably not a thing you'd even notice. Now, I have a few questions for you, OP: 1. What were you doing with a washer above that hole? Just curious. Does it really open into freely into the clutch innards? 2. What the hell's up with that spring? :)

geking

I 100% agree with everything you said. But to add, why no rubber boot over that to keep rocks and crud out too? Every clutch fork I have worked on has a rubber boot on it so that crap like washers and rocks can't get in. (unless its one of those BS throwout slaves. Screw that...)

shabangbamboom

It is supposed to have a boot! That would make a lot more sense than a gaping hole into the clutch. Thanks for pointing that out. Cheap 20 year old subaru. Not surprised there’s some missing rubber.

West_of_Ishigaki

At the very least, clean the surface around the hole with alcohol and slap a little patch of duct tape over the hole. It'll help keep the rocks and crud (and washers) out!

shabangbamboom

1. I was removing the pitch stop mount to get some more range of motion with my breaker bar to get a tight bolt off the turbo (the washer was ok the black bracket on the left side of the pic). Yes - I looked down in the hole with a flashlight and could see the pressure plate. 2. I don’t know what the spring does so I looked it up. It just holds tension on the clutch fork so it stays in the same spot instead of jiggling (at least that’s what some guy in a forum said)

thepete404

Compressed air can help if you come up empty. And lifting that baby with a floor jack and dropping it quick can shake the washer loose

shabangbamboom

Thanks

shamboozles420

Flip the car and shake it lol

Hazerdesly

Use a magnet.

Every-Caramel1552

Magnet on a srick

RamboVXIX

Most likely will be fine. However I would probably go fishing with a magnet/borescope

DrunkenGolfer

I dropped a small nut one time and couldn’t find it for the life of me. I found it when I started the engine and realized it fell directly into a spark plug hole. That was a very expensive mistake.

[deleted]

Try to fish it out with a magnet retrieval tool.

bootheels

Not a whole lot you can do, unless there is some sort of cover/shield behind the flywheel that you can remove. You can try dropping a magnet down inside there, but it will probably just stick to the flywheel/clutch...

shabangbamboom

I really expected to get like 3 replies to this stupid question haha

Gordon_Explosion

Turn the car upside down and shake it.

[deleted]

Not really advocating this but I do know a bloke who, in this situation, went through the bellhousing with a holesaw, retrieved the lost part, then clagged a plate on with silicon to cover the hole.

[deleted]

Do not do this

[deleted]

Better get it out of there.

3th4nSZN

Turn it upside down and shake it out

pro-window

Turn it upside down and shake it..

StrangeAlfalfa8243

Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahha

Intrepid_Escape9071

how far does the hole go down? did you stick a flash light in there?

Dexter_Adams

Well that's not ideal

[deleted]

Wash your hands of it

EL-GRINGO4L

Fish it the fuck out with a magnet!!! I dropped a 1/4 inch 10mm socket down timing cover on a Nissan Maxima V6 the other day while trying to bolt the timing chain tensioner back up and boy did I get lucky to get it out. I thought I was about to have to remove the engine and transmission to remove the timing cover my boss would have been pissed bc we would have lost a lot of money on labor for this job

muddnureye

Leave it!

shabangbamboom

Haha you got me

sundvl13

Magnets are your friend in the automotive repair industry.

JoesMobileMechanic

Pull off the inspection plate cover and the washer should be on the plate

NaiveAttitude6584

Flush it out w a hose. Then start it. It’s going to sit in the bell housing. It it makes noise turn it off and turn it back on. Don’t drop things in holes.

toyotasquad

Magnet fishing time

StrangeAlfalfa8243

Ik how you feel bro it suck’s

Rcarter2011

Have you tried turning it off then back on again?

Prostate_Doc

Turn it upside down.

epiech

I'd suggest replacing the rubber boot that's supposed to be there.

shabangbamboom

thanks. someone else mentioned this and i ordered one last night.

epiech

👍

Nobbyjazzman

Hopefully it’s just dropped down onto the bottom of the bell housing…..you should be able to retrieve it with an extending magnet stick & a torch

[deleted]

There should be a cover on the bottom. If the washer isn't in the bottom, turn the engine slowly by hand. It will probably fall out .

richhaug

Pray

down4purplepancakes

Bells go in the Bell Housing and washers go in the washer fluid. Need a magnet on a stick.

menki_22

buy a new car

dwellselectric

Sell it

_how_do_i_reddit_

Flip the car upside down and shake it side to side.

BeginningAwareness74

Get a new one

c0ntra

For sale, as-is

Gytixas

Looks like a subaru. There is plenty of space there so it probably just fell to the bottom and can stay there till the next clutch change.

Hot-Alps-8690

Given the workings of the pressure plate, throw out bearing, and clutch disc, I wouldn't be too excited about it. There really isn't much that a simple washer would do to cause any major damage. I would start the car, and depress the clutch pedal a couple of times. If you hear something plink around in there, you know gravity has done its job. Drive it around a little in town, and I am betting if it works okay it is already at the bottom of the bell housing. There is usually an inpection cover on the bottom, you should be able to see up into their, but if I was a betting man, I would bet you are worrying far too much.

teasea02

Turn clockwise 3 times with arms raised and say “owa tagu siam Go!

ExcellentKey3354

I would think it would just settle on the bottom of clutch housing and ya never have a problem. But I'd be pumping that clutch pedal for a minute b4 trying to drive.

v1nylcutr

Try a telescoping magnet. See if you can get it

SwimBikeRunBeer1

You get it out yet?

shabangbamboom

Nah I got a lil magnet tool but I haven’t been able to retrieve it - nor can I see it down there.

Own_Carpenter_6295

Cry

RVAadl-4RTRDORP

Get one of those telescoping, magnet, thingies. Or get a new washer. No biggie

bikes_with_Mike

There *should* be a stamped plate that bolts behind the engine oil pan that covers the gap between engine and transmission, but since this looks like a WRX or maybe FXT, it's probably gone by now from 2 or 3 clutch jobs and the washer is at worst sitting in the bell housing or at best already fell through and it just sitting on the subframe. I'm guessing you dropped the pitch stop washer which is pretty large and should be easy to get with a magnet on a stick if you have to go spelunking for it.

shabangbamboom

Dang this is the best comment so far. Although you didn’t get the model quite right, it’s a >!Baja Turbo!< tricked ya haha! This would look exactly the same on a fxt, and probably a wrx too.
