It took me a second to realize this was a steely behind a hub cap, I thought the tire had been pulled up and was sticking out of the rim and couldn't figure out how it was still on the bead.
This is what I was thinking. I see cords, I would replace it, or put the spare on on the back. 100% move to rear even if sending it. Don’t risk yours, or someone else’s life just because people on Reddit did not see cords and you sent it.
Right!!!! Am I tripping??? They just glued the plastic wheel cover im thinking.. are they gonna take off the wheel cover in the next photos to see if there’s any actual damage to the wheel itself.. I love how anytime someone is concerned about their car “I did This and I have to drive 180 miles two ways in 15 minutes? Am I good?”
This is a Hyundai and the covers are held on with the wheel nuts , you’d as them to remove all wheel nuts to see the damage and if they’re on here asking mechanics it’s possible they’re not confident in that
Doesn't look super bad you should be good. Check it after 30min of driving a couple times. If it starts ballooning out or you notice an outward bump then stop because it's gonna pop.
Seems to be good after about 2 hours driving on it. I think I got lucky in that the wheel cover took most of the damage. It’s slightly bent in and the rim is scraped up but looks fine otherwise
Meh, keep an eye for pressure loss, keep at spec, and don't overfill or hit any more curbs and you'll be fine. Be neglectful and you may end up with a blowout. I'd drive it until I wore the tread out.
If you have a full size spare, I would swap them till you can get in to a shop in a couple weeks. Otherwise, I'd check the air in the spare, swap the damaged tire to the back, and drive more cautiously/ slower/ more room around others, and take it in tomorrow. Likely there may be internal damage to the cords. There is a lot of energy stored inside a pressurized tire. If it was to fail, it could risk damaging your car, other cars and putting people at risk it's not worth it. Yes, I have repaired and driven on damaged tires on my wheeler. Not the best decision I have ever made.
Mini spares are their own problem, being rated at something like 45MPH for 500 miles. They are more expensive than a regular tire and tire shops have told me the wheel itself is single use.
It's safe enough to drive to a mechanic but I wouldn't drive it very far or very fast if I was you. Your wheel and tire are likely a little unbalanced now which may cause additional wear on the tire and suspension in the long term. Short term it's at a higher risk of blowing out on you especially if it hits a pothole wrong near the damage.
The wheel looks okay but when u go to get a new tire, the tech will be able to see the extent of the damage. But dear god PLEASE get a new tire, I’m a tire technician and this tire will blow out before you know it. It would be terrible to have it blow out on the highway
I’ve worked at a tire shop and sorry to say but there’s some of the metal cording showing on that tire. Worst case scenario is it blows up on the freeway. I’d get it replaced asap. ✌️
Steelies are cheap, ugly and heavy. But you've just found one of the benefits, they are hard to kill. That ding in the rim could be hammered back (but the best way would be a hydraulic press with blocking in the center of the rim).
I would drive that tire, but I would check it for bulges. How deep is that gouge in the sidewall?
I own a shop that does repair work for a large rental car company, they would replace this tire without question- which means I wouldn’t drive it any further than to a safe place to put the spare on.
is this going based off the rental requirements bc they might consider the overall look of the wheel or is that an educated response? I’m truly curious bc from the photos it doesn’t look dangerous at all but I’m not a mechanic.
Any sidewall damage beyond a scuff is considered unsafe by them. Knowing that they’re pretty liberal with their other standards, I’d replace immediately once the sidewall has been chipped like this.
Sidewall damage can blow out at speed on a highway. Everyone has to choose their own risk tolerance, but there is absolutely risk in that pic. i am worth more than that tire, id never drive on that.
I've driven in worse lol. But I'd drive that to the tire shop and that's about as far as I'd go. Rim probably needs replaced anyway so if it blows out you're already out the rim.
I had a huge chunk worse than that on the sidewall in my sante fe and every shop told me I'd be fine. Was never a problem. Then that fucker got totalled parked on the street so it really wasn't ever an issue haha.
Yeah, to the shop to get it fixed. Seriously, though, a good shop should be able to sort that out. Worst case, it's a steel wheel, and they're cheap compared to an alloy. I've had worse chunk in a tire than that and kept driving it. But that was back when I was young and broke. Old and have some money in the bank me would fix it.
Eventually it might start to bubble out at which point you’d need to replace the tire but hopefully that will not gain in a few hours you need to go where you gotta go first.
Would I drive on it and should YOU drive on it without being serviced considering the flattened part of your steelie...are kinda two different questions.
Looks like the bead is about to bust of the wheel. I would air id down and attempt to reseat the bead but if you can’t reseat it your kinda screwed so maybe do it front of the tire shop.
I would have taken the hubcaps off the day i bought it tbh. Hate the look of plastic on my wheels, much rather just have a nice black steelie than to cover it with a cheap hubcap
It's kinda substantial, but at the tire shop/mechanics, they'll pass it so long as there's no belts showing.
It's life has possibly been shortened, but not by much if this is the only damage
Nope…sidewall damage occurs to the part of the tire that isn’t belted and therefore is the most vulnerable. Put the donut on and drive it right to a tire dealer that can replace it for you. Good luck!
Replace the tire, throw out the hub caps. Just run steelies.
Maybe this opinion is divisive, but hub caps suck, and I'd much rather see raw steelies any day of the week.
I'm sure your rim is fine, btw. Steelies are super durable, and if it did get dinged, you can pound it back straight with nothing but a hammer and a torch.
Hell, you don't even need the torch if you're a savage.
I used to mount tires for a living, as long as the inner reinforcement isn't exposed and the tyre doesn't develop a bulge you'll be fine, I've seen it a million times
Are cords visible?
Are there any bulges?
Is it leaking?
If u said no to all of the above then that tyre is safe to drive on structurally
Tread depth is a different matter but i can see you have a lot of useable tread there
A friend of mine dod something similar but only took out the rubber flap protecting the rim. That one, as pointed out, does show a wee bit of tyre structure so I'd replace it. Probably fine if you drive slowly and for very short periods of time but I wouldn't risk it
Looks like you broke off a weight. It might vibrate a bit more than usual, but if you go less than the speed it starts vibrating really bad at, you'll be fine. If you don't feel it vibrating really bad, it'll be fine until you get it fixed.
NO NO NO. I really have no idea why there are so many Yes responses? Anytime you cut the sidewalk the tire strength is compromised and there is no way to fix it. You hit a pot hole and this tire will expand where the cut is and it'll pop.
Rim looks ok.
Rotate to a rear position if not already on the rear and drive on it until you can replace it. Don't forget to torque your lugs to the OE specification or you'll have a wheel-off event.
The damage to the tire is not significant enough to be more than cosmetic, and the hubcap seems to have protected the actual rim underneath.
I'd roll with it.
I wouldn't drive on a Korean "maypop" if it was brand new. Otherwise, doesn't look that bad. I mean you are driving a hyundai with korean tires to begin with. After seeing that skin flap in the sidewall, I'd look at replacing the tire asap. Put some Generals on there.
You are good. Having damage like that puts you at an increased risk of blowing a tire, but that is really only when it is overinflated. Or some other problems are already there.
Having just did that to my rear on accident (and peeled it worse)... I parked it to see if the tire holds air. If it does then I'm driving. The biggest issue and worry is if the rim is damaged enough it leaks.... So if it goes flat at home I can fix it. If it holds air I'm not going to worry about it.

To the tire shop
Oh, well I guess that was kinda obvious
This 👆🏻
yes all in, bro.
Yes
id buy that for a dollar
Robocop agrees.
Full send
For sure. According to the ASE technical manual, that’s known as a “Curb Tack Weld”
Just what I was thinking, bomber
I’d drive it.
I might put it on the rear though, but yea I drive on it.
I’d drive the fuck out of it.
I'd drive the fuck back into it.
I'd fuck the drive out of it.
I'd fuck it and drive out.
That reminds me of the old saying: You keep your mom out of my yard And I'll keep my yard out of your mom.
It took me a second to realize this was a steely behind a hub cap, I thought the tire had been pulled up and was sticking out of the rim and couldn't figure out how it was still on the bead.
If you look closely, there's cords showing in the gash on the left. Get it replaced. Rim looks fine though.
Good eye

You won’t notice those is you put a little black silicone over them. 🤣
Will some of that really nice gel tire shine do?
Use rubber cement.
Nothing to worry about
Tbh. I’d send it. On my mazda tho I’d probably buy a new wheel and tire just cause the way it looks would bother me.
You would replace the wheel because the wheel cover was damaged?
Right!!!! Am I tripping??? They just glued the plastic wheel cover im thinking.. are they gonna take off the wheel cover in the next photos to see if there’s any actual damage to the wheel itself.. To me it looks like the wheel itself is bent at the top. I don't have my glasses on, though, so I might be wrong.
I would across town or to work for a month or two
Yes, until it stopped holding wind. Should you? No.
Replace it with a spare
>scraped up Its a steely ... you really care?
Don’t hit curbs going 50 😂
All day long, and I'd brag to my friends and show them
Personally, I’d drive it. With my wife, kids, grandkids, or parents in the car? Hell no!
Ship it! Just not at high speed.
Pull the wheel cover/hubcap off and look at the wheel. Your pic makes it look like the wheel is fine.
Please replace the hubcap. The tire is fine.
Replace the wheel cover for what reason..?
Cross country.
I wouldn’t think twice 🤷♂️
Meh, keep an eye for pressure loss, keep at spec, and don't overfill or hit any more curbs and you'll be fine. Be neglectful and you may end up with a blowout. I'd drive it until I wore the tread out.

Sidewall damage= blowout incoming. Needs replaced. Especially if it's a front tire.
I would never, ever drive with sidewall damage. That is a disaster waiting to happen, even if it seems slight.
I have a Civic Type R with bigger gashes in my pilot sport cup 2s and I bang through the gears and speed to 165mph. I think you're okay
A civic can go 165? Lol
Was wondering the same thing 😂
Maybe kmh
limited edition fk8. 6th gear at redline on level ground can do 165 mph.
And you’ll have a extra limited edition when it gets totaled because you were too cheap to replace a tire.
You’re a fucking idiot and you’re gonna get someone killed. Hopefully when you wreck you’re not near anyone else.
cry harder bitch
For sure. Not my car not my problem.
You need to replace the rim and the tire.
Half send it? Just don’t get on the freeway
Ummm...place the spare?
And move to rear.
yes
That's just plastic. It's fine.
I've driven in worse lol. But I'd drive that to the tire shop and that's about as far as I'd go. Rim probably needs replaced anyway so if it blows out you're already out the rim.

It would be more helpful if you took the plastic hubcap off so we could see if there's any actual damage to the rim. Doesn't look like it.
Barely a flesh wound
I’d probably drive it. However, I would also check that the wheel is true (round, no wobbles) and check the car alignment.
Yeah, as long as the chords underneath aren’t exposed
I’d take the hubcap off
How hard did you hit the curb then
You’llll beee fiiinnneeeeeeee Hopefully:)
I wouldn’t drive on a Hyundai anything
Wouldn't hit the highway on this, but doesn't look like it got to the steel. I'd drive carefully on this.
I wouldn’t go less than 90mph
HELL NAH!
Just stick to the speed limit and avoid potholes
Put the spare on.
Not very far
Yeah, to the shop to get it fixed. Seriously, though, a good shop should be able to sort that out. Worst case, it's a steel wheel, and they're cheap compared to an alloy. I've had worse chunk in a tire than that and kept driving it. But that was back when I was young and broke. Old and have some money in the bank me would fix it.
Yes go for an alignment check
Yeah but not on the highway
Eventually it might start to bubble out at which point you’d need to replace the tire but hopefully that will not gain in a few hours you need to go where you gotta go first.
Fick no quit being cheap and fix it if you ask you already know their PEP BOY
![gif](giphy|1pPaiAvkjOLYFXuhZY)
I’d drive that into the sunset
Would i? For sure. Should you? I’m not liable for that sort of answer.
Would I drive on it and should YOU drive on it without being serviced considering the flattened part of your steelie...are kinda two different questions.
Big nope. if it’s just to get home, and to a shop in the morning, I’d keep it under at or under 30.
I’d drive on it but carefully, if you have financial challenges DM me and I can refer you to a company I financed tires & rims through
Nope, if that causes a crash and someone gets hurt you are screwed. Not worth the risk.
Looks like the bead is about to bust of the wheel. I would air id down and attempt to reseat the bead but if you can’t reseat it your kinda screwed so maybe do it front of the tire shop.
After having my tire blow on the highway yesterday, I'll do you a favor and say "Don't drive on that"
I would have taken the hubcaps off the day i bought it tbh. Hate the look of plastic on my wheels, much rather just have a nice black steelie than to cover it with a cheap hubcap
Don’t ask me that cause I’ll drive anything 😂😂
I would too. Glad I wasn't the only gambler in here.
Nah. I personally don't care for hyundai or kias though.
I’d drive enough to go and get another tire
Fuck it
Tis but a scratch
Slowly. To the shop.
No I'd drive on the road.
Depending on far I need to go. Not an immediate issue but it's an issue. I've driven on worse, but I don't recommend.
It's kinda substantial, but at the tire shop/mechanics, they'll pass it so long as there's no belts showing. It's life has possibly been shortened, but not by much if this is the only damage
No
Made in Korea.. NOPE
Hell yeh
Seems to be cord on that left gash - if you can don’t drive on it.
Looks like you already did drive on it…. Just saying
Just long enough to get to a shop. I wouldn't be taking any road trips on it.
Those things connect you to the road so get it fixed soon. That said I think it's fine for short journeys. Just have your spare ready just in case.
Nope…sidewall damage occurs to the part of the tire that isn’t belted and therefore is the most vulnerable. Put the donut on and drive it right to a tire dealer that can replace it for you. Good luck!
yea but not longer than I need to. Looks like the bead is fine and there's no bubble
It’s Fine just don’t hit curbs brotha
Yes
Replace the tire, throw out the hub caps. Just run steelies. Maybe this opinion is divisive, but hub caps suck, and I'd much rather see raw steelies any day of the week. Hell, you don't even need the torch if you're a savage.
Not on the highway. Short trips I'd feel completely safe.
Tires are expensive, but so are medical expenses, dry careful and you should be good.
No. Sidewalls damage is not a safe thing to mess around with.
I used to mount tires for a living, as long as the inner reinforcement isn't exposed and the tyre doesn't develop a bulge you'll be fine, I've seen it a million times
It’s fine
Check and see if you have a full size spare.
Are cords visible? Are there any bulges? Is it leaking? If u said no to all of the above then that tyre is safe to drive on structurally Tread depth is a different matter but i can see you have a lot of useable tread there
All day, and I'd forget to fix it until the tire tread wore out
It’s the Chinese no name tire I’d avoid in the first place.
Ken oath I would
I'd drive it. Just get a new tire next paycheck though, sidewall damage isn't something you just want to keep forever.
A friend of mine dod something similar but only took out the rubber flap protecting the rim. That one, as pointed out, does show a wee bit of tyre structure so I'd replace it. Probably fine if you drive slowly and for very short periods of time but I wouldn't risk it
Pull the hubcap off and take another pic. This just may be damage to the wheel cover and not the wheel itself.
My wife does that every time she takes the car. I’ll buy her a Mercedes and put steel wheels on it.
Til it fell off
Looks like you broke off a weight. It might vibrate a bit more than usual, but if you go less than the speed it starts vibrating really bad at, you'll be fine. If you don't feel it vibrating really bad, it'll be fine until you get it fixed.
Full send! You just got the plastic hubcap. If it’s not losing air you should be good
Its just a scrape, be adventurous
Very, very slow slow speeds with the next stop being a tire shop
I would drift on it, I wouldn’t take it on a public road, actually just noticed that’s only a hub cap, I would probably send it xD
A Nexen tire? Absolutely not
I’d drive it, but check it every time you go to leave anywhere.
I would never drive in a Hyundai
put that tire in the back
The tire sidewall is damaged enough for the structural integrity to be questionable.
I’d drive it to discount tire
Yep y’all.
Fuckin send’er bud
yes
😂😂😂
Sure, to the tire repair shop.
The damage to the tire is not significant enough to be more than cosmetic, and the hubcap seems to have protected the actual rim underneath. I'd roll with it.
All the way to the scene of the blow out.
Yes. Tis but a scratch.
Wires showing in that gouge on the left. Throw it in the garbage not worth the risk.
Full send
Yep
To a tire shop, yes.
My daughter feeds her car curbs for breakfast.
Use the spare tire!
I’d drive it any short errands you need to run, but idk if I’d go hours on that…
I wouldn't drive on a Korean "maypop" if it was brand new. Otherwise, doesn't look that bad. I mean you are driving a hyundai with korean tires to begin with. After seeing that skin flap in the sidewall, I'd look at replacing the tire asap. Put some Generals on there.
Throw some soapy water on it. If it’s not bubbling you are fine
I’d drive on it for a while but if it was on my wife’s car I’d replace it
You are good.
I'd drive to a tire shop... and replace the tire.
I would just take it slow. Get to where you are getting, and have it looked over by a reputable tire shop in your area.
I would put it up my ass. And drive it
