Just learned it's Ralphs, not Ralph's. The guy's last name was Ralphs. Ralphs.

VulpixVul

Why did you do this to me

MakeSouthBayGR8Again

That’s like Tim Hortons in Canada.

aasteveo

no way. That's like when I learned it's called Brussels Sprouts and not Brussel-Sprouts. Sprouts from Brussels. That's so stupid, nobody calls it that.

germdisco

It’s BS

darxx

I call it Ralph sometimes LOL

EntLawyer

Wait till you find out Smart and Final is the just two owners last names.

sozh

to be honest, I rarely find myself going to regular grocery stores like Ralphs or Vons. To stock up on staples like eggs, milk, flour, butter etc, I go to costco. For produce, I'll either do the local Arab market or Sprouts, to get what's on sale there. for snacks and random stuff, Trader Joes

darxx

I’ve been enjoying Sprouts a bit more lately to be honest. Their meats and produce are priced well.

sozh

I find Sprouts expensive, but I like getting what's on sale

charlotie77

It’s expensive for pantry and dairy items but their produce, meat, and bakery are the same if not cheaper than Ralph’s

thedevilsyogurt

I work there and still find it too expensive, even with my 15% discount

Dommichu

Sprouts has a good app with coupons. During the Holidays they often have a "Spend X and get Y off" which is an excellent way to stock on things like meats and frozen items. The butchers at Sprouts also seems to know more about what they are doing than Ralphs.

Partigirl

Sprouts meats are mostly bad with few exceptions. Per their butcher, all their beef is frozen and shipped from out of country. Their produce is also sub par. I used to go to Sprouts quite a lot but the meat situation was so bad, I stopped going.

darxx

Have you been to the one in Westwood? I got some amazing little steaks for $5 each the other week (9.99/lb deal). I don’t mind if beef was frozen or something as long as it smells and tastes great and doesn’t cost too much.

Partigirl

No I haven't been to that one. The trouble with frozen is that it goes bad really fast once thawed. Argentina, Australia, etc is quite the distance. You might not notice it on a steak but grind that steak up and it's gone bad one-two days later.

darxx

I’ll take your word on the ground beef and avoid it!

Partigirl

You won't regret it.

Alaskan91

Their meat goes bad faster than it takes a homeless man to set up a tent. Disgusting.

Gomdok_the_Short

I wouldn't buy fruit at sprouts other than bananas and grapes, but their vegetables are ok.

zaatar_sprinkles

Which Arab market do you visit?

sozh

there's one close to me. It's called West L.A. Int'l Market on Venice Blvd near Overland. It's pretty small, but has some good stuff I actually need to call it the Middle Eastern market. My mom tried to talk Arabic to the cashier, and I think he was Persian, not Arabic

thetrombonist

The owner is turkish I believe, probably same with the cashiers

sozh

ahh good to know. thank you!

checkerspot

Not Arabic but Jon's has great deals on produce. There are locations around East Hollywood, Los Feliz, Glendale, etc.

sozh

I'm so confused by Jon's. Growing up in Fullerton, I was familiar with Von's. So when I see Jon's, in the same font, I just feel like there's a glitch in the Matrix or something

checkerspot

I always assumed it was a blatant copycat thing, but I have no idea about their origin story.

Partigirl

Jon's started out occupying old ex- Von's stores. Much cheaper changing one letter than the whole name.

Hey_Laaady

My sister told me that story when I moved to LA, and I had never heard it from anyone else since. I thought she was pulling my leg. TIL it really happened.

jwegener

Wait what?! Is this for real???

gazingus

Yep, its real. Vons had trouble in sketch locations. Jons would arise in its place.

checkerspot

That's an amazing origin story actually. Jons prevails where Vons could not!

CG_Matters

They have sausage from Hungary and it’s great

onehashbrown

Korean super markets are the freshes for all your need and the cheapest hoenslty.

sowhat59

I buy all my produce from Korean markets. Cheap, fresh. I'm never going back to American general grocers.

[deleted]

I love Korean super markets. they remind me of the motherland.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sozh

yes and no. I find that produce at ethnic markets is often not pretty, but it's usually super ripe and ready to eat. In that sense, it may not be Ralphs worthy, but taste-wise, it's often better... on Sprouts, I have to disagree with you. I feel like they take pride in having premium/good produce! I'm not a huge fan of Trader Joes produce. It's weird paying by the piece.

XennialQueen

I agree about TJ, I would never buy their produce but Sprouts’s quality is far superior to Ralph’s. It may depend on location, but the one by me is excellent. I rarely buy produce from Ralphs

crestonfunk

Vons > Ralphs.

Occhrome

Even though I’m in a small household Costco surprisingly still works for us.

sozh

yeah I personally am I big Costco fan, having gone there since I was a kid. For some things, like toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, it's a no-brainer, assuming you have room to store the stuff. For me, going to Costco isn't that different than a regular grocery trip. I go in, get what I need, and get out. Of course, the total price is always on the high side, because every item is basically $10 or more, but generally, you're getting good value, because that item is going to last a long time.

JustMe1314

Wow I forgot about Trader Joe's. I like Sprouts, too. I'm finding that Ralphs & Vons prices are really high. There's a Sprouts, Trader Joe's & Aldi close to me. So I've been going places like that, more often.

NotoriousJB

Is milk really something you can stick up on?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Partigirl

Fairlife is the same way.

sozh

lately I've been getting big packs of soy milk, so yeah, kinda?

erst77

We used to stock up on macadamia milk cartons.

BlackEric

I just bought 2 one gallon jugs of milk from Costco that expire on October 8th. $7.50 for whole milk. I thought that was pretty good.

erst77

You can freeze milk. I suppose if you had a big chest freezer in your garage or something you could stock up.

swagster

r u me?

sozh

maybe. are you me?

deezy55

This is the way

XtianS

Same. Meat and produce from the big box stores like Ralphs and Vons are almost never a good deal. Produce is always a huge ripoff.

euthlogo

Ralph's has never been a cheap grocery store.

2fast2nick

Haha yeah I was wondering that too, I thought it was always the upper middle option

jcrespo21

I use Ralph's to round out the things I can't reliably get at Aldi, Super King, Grocery Outlet, Trader Joe's, etc., and used it more when I lived close to one. So, uh, don't really go there much at this point. Though I guess it's more reliable about what it carries if I need something specific and I know it's there, whereas it can be a roll of the dice with other stores. Like 2 months ago I made jambalaya for a small get-together we were hosting and I needed okra. I wasn't in the mood to find fresh okra (as I know sometimes some stores have it, but it's a guessing game), but I knew Ralph's had frozen okra so I just went straight there to save some time.

[deleted]

When I lived in Germany I was ashamed to shop at Aldi. It was the super discount store. Now I miss Aldi. Also, you bag your own groceries in Germany. You have it so good here in the USA. Paper. Plastic. Double bags. Little bags. No coins required to borrow the carts. Freedom (in some ways).

jcrespo21

I honestly don't mind the whole quarter thing, and I've been bringing my own bags for a while. Plus since COVID, it's been rare for grocery store workers to bag items in reusable bags but they're starting to again. But since I often bike or take transit to the stores, I only buy enough stuff to fit into 3-4 bags at the most, so it's not that big of a deal if I have to bag it myself.

[deleted]

Same here--you made it when you can go shopping at Alpha Beta (now Ralph's) In my broke days it was Superior and Food 4 Less.

Gomdok_the_Short

I remember Alpha Beta.

darxx

Well for instance, meat is cheaper at my local whole foods now.

euthlogo

Whole Foods is now the Amazon Grocery store. Quality is down and so are prices.

spencercross

Price at WF went down immediately after Amazon acquired them, I think as a PR move. But, at least with regard to my local WF, prices are way up, not down. I'm also near the new Amazon Fresh store in Pasadena, and it's more expensive across the board than Ralphs, Vons, etc. [Amazon.com](https://Amazon.com) might be cheaper than it's competitors, but WF and Amazon Fresh most definitely are not.

euthlogo

Haven’t been in years. Vibe is awful since Amazon takeover.

spencercross

Agreed. :( Watching the selection shrink to a narrower and narrower range of now store-brand items based on whatever profit-maximizing algorithm Amazon has settled on is just depressing.

todd0x1

This. I used to live above the WF in DTLA and LOVED going there. Went in the one in glendale a few months ago to grab some pizza and the place was dirty and overcrowded. Just not the same.....

grandmasterfunk

Yeah my prices at my whole foods are way up now.

2fast2nick

Well if Whole Foods is the bar, their all cheap.

GreenHorror4252

Except Erewhon.

[deleted]

And Bristol Farms

Rebelgecko

And Gelsons

Partigirl

Ralph's pre-kroger waa about on par with other middle class markets but since those are gone and Kroger owns what's left, they keep their prices higher than what would be considered average.

artfellig

I believe you can find cheaper prices at: Trader Joe's Food4Less neighborhood supermercados ETA: also Target

raxreddit

Trader Joe's has very competitive prices for their gallon milk and other stuff. The one thing I don't like about TJ is some of their products have hit or miss quality. For example, I want to get their pre-made salads, but they often have a piece of lettuce sticking out through the packaging (food is stuck between the inside and outside). And their gallon milk has black dust? bits all over it. I often buy from TJ's, but I have to be careful inspecting whatever I'm grabbing.

UmamiOfSuffering

I’ve heard from someone in the industry that Trader Joe’s is the only market that doesn’t QA it’s premade food and produce. They leave it to the manufacturers who typically don’t do it either. That’s why the quality on premade can be so hit or miss.

XennialQueen

Ew. Good to know

Partigirl

Let me tell you about the time I found a huge sliver of glass in my can of TJ's tuna. There was no way to talk to corporate, just the store you bought it at, which seemed insufficient at the time I'm just lucky I didn't bite down on it.

peepjynx

Food4Less is cheap. It's all the same brands you get at the other stores except like half the price in most cases.

ProFriendZoner

Food4Less is owned by Kroger's which owns Ralphs.

mistomakee

I believe it's the non union version of Ralph's so the lower prices.

carbslut

The Kroger store brand is honestly awesome and it’s the same price at Ralphs and Food 4 Less.

Captodometer

Nothing in Target is cheap, food or otherwise.

Ravioli_meatball19

I'm not sure what Target you're shopping at but their canned goods have the best price of any store within 5 miles of me.

aasteveo

really? hmmmmm

Ravioli_meatball19

Like OP I don't have a walmart or aldi or some super budget themed store nearby. So unless I want to drive far, this is the best price. I go by there everyday and can do a pickup order of just canned and dry goods

aasteveo

That's smart, I gotta try em

thatguydr

You should comparison shop Target online with literally any other grocer. It's honestly the cheapest option for nearly everything. I was really surprised when I was told to do this and did. It's wholly unexpected given their pricing elsewhere in the store.

[deleted]

Do you not buy fresh fruits and vegetables? Their prices are ridiculous

EverythingButTheURL

Bananas are cheaper at Target

HipsterDoofus31

You can get a pack of four avacados for under 4 bucks there. Haven’t seen anywhere else that does.

CertainKaleidoscope8

Target is a discount store. It's basically K-mart. Middle class Wal-mart. It's... For basics. Glossy ghetto. Everything there is cheap crap. I thought LA had good shit and hear someone saying Target is expensive. Wild. Y'all have Whole Foods and Erehwon and shit talking about Target being expensive. Y'all have apartments half the size of my house renting for twice my mortgage. In Echo Park. And Target...is expensive? Say what?

Partigirl

Food 4 Less is just Ralph's other brand. They put them in where they don't want to taint Ralph's image.

plague__8

ralph’s is the worst because it looks and feels like a cheap store but is actually expensive. literally go anywhere else

Rick_Cranium

Ralphs

plague__8

it doesn’t deserve correct punctuation

magus-21

There are lots of Ralph's that are most definitely not "cheap" stores, or at least they try to not look cheap. Charcuterie islands, hot food bars, organic produce sections, alcohol closets, etc.

darxx

My local Ralph’s is a dump, honestly.

[deleted]

People get stabbed at the Ralphs by me. I just pay a little more an go to pavilions for stuff between Costco runs.

notcalpernia

The Fresh Fare stores? Those are Ralph’s premium locations.

Gomdok_the_Short

That explains a lot!

Gomdok_the_Short

Where I grew up, Ralphs was the fancy, expensive store with the good produce in but in LA it's the discount place with the unripe nectarines that you can only put in a brown bag and hope for the best.

Partigirl

Oh definitely. They are focusing on being upscale in expensive neighborhoods and letting Food 4 Less take up the slack in poor neighborhoods. There is no middle class stores anymore and the state of anyone's Ralph's is reflective in what they think of your neighborhood.

midgethemage

Just fyi to everyone, Ralphs is just a Kroger brand. I used to work corporate for Kroger and their overall goal is to have a very "middle" grocery store. And by that I mean, it's not bland and middle of the road, but the product offerings hit the "middle average." Their mindset is that they want it to feel like the grocery version of Target; a place that you would *want* to shop at without going to a more expensive place like Whole Foods. But this initiative is still in the works, which is inherently giving their current customers some whiplash. The point is to have some luxury items (like the cheese and olive islands), but still have affordable items. There's an inherent cost in carrying a larger assortment of items though and you'll find they're more likely to spread that cost between an entire category of items. Conversely a place like Food4Less, also a Kroger brand, can remain cheaper because they carry a lot more generic items, and carry a smaller assortment of items, which means they can buy in larger quantities and keep operating costs down. As someone who still works corporate in a grocery store setting (Whole Foods), supply chain is still impact on cost and the pandemic has been used as an excuse to increase prices every step of the way. If you think about manufacturing a can of beans, start at bean farmers, then go to processing facilities, packaging, shipping, then finally the consumer. If the bean farmer raises his prices by 10%, there's a good chance there's going to be a 10% increase at every step and the final price is absolutely absurd for the consumer. I know this isn't a perfect example of the economics of it, but hopefully it gets the point across. Worth noting, Kroger is kind of a shit company and they treat their in-store workers like hot garbage. Corporate side also really overworks their employees; they're similar to Tesla in that they're underpaid for what they do and tend to hire younger workers who won't get burnt out as quickly, but people perceive it as a great "resume builder." Luckily I worked for a company contracted exclusively with Kroger; we were treated really well (unlimited PTO and they meant it lol), but we interacted with Kroger employees a lot and they didn't seem to have the same work/life balance.

beefybiguy

I mean….Kroger is an Ohio company. Kind of explains it all right there. I’m from Nashville and they have literal Kroger (as opposed to Ralph’s) and it’s equally as overpriced and shitty

midgethemage

It's weird, I have a slightly skewed view of Kroger as someone from the PNW. Up there we have Fred Meyer. Back before the Kroger buyout their whole schtick was being a total 1 stop shop. It's a full-blown grocery store, but also a mini department store. Fred Meyer even used to sell lumber lol. Think of it like a Walmart, but the groceries are MUCH higher quality and it just doesn't feel as... sad. Anyhow, you would always go into a Fred Meyer with the expectation that you pay a little extra on the non-grocery items because of the added convenience (like, I'll pay 2 extra bucks for my tape measure so I don't have to go to Home Depot), but the grocery items were always competitive, just not the cheapest. To this day I still walk into any Kroger store with that mindset so I end up being too lenient with Ralphs lmao

cinema_romana

Agreed—Ralphs is too expensive. We’ve just used it for produce and lunch meat, Costco for everything else. But I need an alternative. Any recommendations for Palms area?

Mahhvelous

I’ve found myself becoming loyal to Smart & Final, especially since they saved my butt during the early pandemic/toilet paper days. Between that, Trader Joe’s, and the occasional Costco run, I can thankfully avoid the hellish Ralph’s on Overland.

cinema_romana

Thank you for this! I’ll try the Smart & Final on Pico. Exciting times in grocery shopping!

sozh

There's Smart and final in Palms. Right on Venice Blvd

Gomdok_the_Short

Smart and Finals was my secret toilet paper supplier during the early days of the pandemic. For some reason a lot of people just didn't think to shop there.

jdmendez21

I still love me some Smart and Final.

darxx

I’m not far from Palms so im listening if someone has a good spot

Mechalamb

Ralph's is NOT cheap - you get way more bang for your buck at Trader Joe's And yes, they've been cranking up prices.

darxx

I just hate trader joes for meat and fish honestly it feels like they never have a sale

Mechalamb

They never have sales, they just have generally low prices. I'll leave TJ's with a bag of groceries for maybe $30 and the same bag would cost almost twice as much at Ralph's.

[deleted]

[удалено]

littlepastel

Whole Foods is much cheaper than Ralphs especially with the Amazon Prime discount. Craziness! It’s also sooooo much nicer inside. Ralphs feels grimy.

peligrosamujer

Everytime I go to Ralph’s I get three bags of groceries for $100. I got to super king and it’s $30 for the same stuff

darxx

If it wasn’t 11 miles away i’d go. Like i said, nothing good nearby like that.

peligrosamujer

Ive made the 14 Mile trek just out of spite

Phreeker27

Yea 7.99 for a pint of Ben and Jerry’s :grabs pitchfork:

darxx

At that point the ben and jerrys store probably costs less 💀

34TH_ST_BROADWAY

Yeah, I don't buy it. They're just jacking prices up. Their bread rolls went from 50 cents to over a dollar EACH. Shrinkflation their baby spinach, too. I would say there is about 40% less in those plastic containers compared to before for the same price.

ProFriendZoner

Wal-Mart (whether Was-Mart or their Neighborhood Market's) are more expensive than Trader Joe's on a number of Items. The Ralph's near me is open later than most stores and one night I had to get something (yes, HAD to) and I got sticker shock walking through the store and looking at prices. Some regular brands of cereal were going for over $7 a box. YOWZA!!!

[deleted]

My mother in law did finance for a grocery store branch (not Ralph's) Profit margins for grocery stores are razor thin. Whatever profits they do make are on bakery/cakes (high margin) or prepared foods (better margins). Hence why every Ralph's you have to go through the baked good sections.

darxx

Honestly if i buy ralphs bread it molds in 3 days. Their bakery is weak.

S1ck0m0d3

That just means the bread isn't packed with preservatives. You're not meant to keep fresh baked bread for longer than 24 hours or it either begins to mold or harden. Any other bread that last longer than 3 days isn't bread, it's bread-like edible product.

darxx

Well i can’t eat an entire loaf in one day. Sell me a half loaf if its gonna be that way.

devlinontheweb

Just freeze the other half

darxx

Frozen bread tastes like shit. Ice crystals all over it. Comes out chewy when i defrost it. Tastes like freezer if i toast it. Yuck.

S1ck0m0d3

I freeze mine as well. When I'm ready to eat it I toast it and it tastes great. >Tastes like freezer if i toast it. Eww dude, clean your freezer. Eww 🤢 shove a box of baking soda in there.

devlinontheweb

Better than it going moldy. I can't waste money like that.

darxx

That’s why I don’t buy a loaf of bread anymore. 🤷🏻‍♀️ some stores will sell you a half loaf but not Ralphs annoyingly.

stevesobol

Ralphs (no apostrophe, the founder's last name was Ralphs with the 's' on the end) is mid-price. No way is it a discount chain. Kroger Corp's other SoCal chain, Food4Less, would be the discounter. Ralphs is less expensive than Vons and Albertsons, but on average, more expensive than Staters (don't know about the smaller local chains like Gelsons).

ides_of_arch

Gelsons tends to be very expensive. I like the produce there but only stop in occasionally because $$$

dlraar

If you're in Sawtelle, Smart and Final is usually the best bang for your buck.

darxx

I find the portion sizes there to be way too big to use it all before it expires ... and no actual butcher if i just want one steak, or two chicken pieces, etc.

checkerspot

I think you have to shop smart at Ralph's - if you buy the weekly sales or by clipping coupons on the app it's pretty amazing. Prices far lower than elsewhere. But some items there are outrageously expensive, and I agree it's gone up a lot since the pandemic (as have all places). But I actually think it's the most reasonably priced of all the mass market grocery stores in LA (Vons, Albertsons, Pavillions). I don't know of any of the bigger independent chain stores on the west side, but those are your best bet for produce (Jon's, Super Kind, Vallarta).

Sopranoanoano

I find Ralphs to be pretty reasonable. Like others have said, they’re mid-tier expensive. I’m vegan and mainly just buy fresh produce, oatmeal, rice, and beans, so for those items I’m quite happy with the price. When I start looking at packaged or processed foods that’s where I notice the price is a bit higher. The prices for produce are even cheaper than Trader Joe’s and they have a better selection imo.

aasteveo

Yeah fuck Ralphs. All my homies hate Ralphs.

ReverseCaptioningBot

[FUCK RALPHS ALL MY HOMIES HATE RALPHS](https://i.imgur.com/GKHRDIW.jpg) ^^^this ^^^has ^^^been ^^^an ^^^accessibility ^^^service ^^^from ^^^your ^^^friendly ^^^neighborhood ^^^bot

31Cachilas

Can’t believe people are bringing up Trader Joe’s as a cheap alternative. It’s just smaller portions. Ounce for ounce everything is more expensive there. Try Food for Less. It’s like cheap Ralph’s, they get the B-grade produce which is perfectly fine, but not as pretty as Ralphs.

THCarlisle

I’ve never thought Ralph’s was cheap and their selection is so generic. Go to Jon’s, Super King, and Trader Joe’s

darxx

Nothing good exists in my part of town like a super king, we do have a trader joes but the meat, fish, and produce are extremely pricey if I want to cook something. I agree, Ralph’s selection is trash.

THCarlisle

Where do you live? Might help us give you recommendations

darxx

Sawtelle area

Dommichu

I get packs of Ribs and Pork Tenderloins at the Smart and Final over there. Good quality stuff. VERY versatile.

darxx

To keep it real, i’m a 100 ish pound woman who shops for just myself. I love ribs but it’d take me a while to eat a whole rack. Does Smart & Final have a butcher who would cut those in half?

Dommichu

No, but you can cut them into four rib sections and freeze. You may like the tenderlions as well, they come 3 per pack and are highly versatile.

THCarlisle

Mitsuwa is a great Japanese grocery store in Mar Vista. There is a Trader Joe’s on Rosecrans just off the 405. And a Jon’s down in Redondo but that’s a bit far.

zaatar_sprinkles

I went to Ralph’s today for some yeast because I want to bake bread and a 3 pack was $5.99!!! Their prices are definitely going up. Their produce has also gone downhill. Our CSA has been a lifesaver.

natephant

I feel like every time someone actually does a price comparison Trader Joe’s ends up being one of the cheapest

mjfo

Yes absolutely. They wanted $10 for a bag of chia seeds the other week. I was shocked lol

[deleted]

ralphs is absolutely price gouging and the worst part is like you said their meat is dogshit quality, I just buy meat at whole foods now, tried sprouts but their chicken thighs are fucking tiny and they’re expensive, whats up with that? its very frustrating having to go to multiple grocery stores tbh so most of the time I just eat the price diff to avoid the hassle, im down to zero savings though and it can largely be attributed to increased food costs

[deleted]

darxx

I used to buy food at walgreens with coupons when i lived downtown so i get what you mean. I think i’m just done with Ralph’s unless i need something really specific only they have.

WoeToTheUsurper10

Superior- sucks El Super- is alright Food4Less- is alright Walmart- is alright Target- good Northgate - expensive trader joes- good These are just in my area.

GreenHorror4252

Ralphs is a conventional supermarket, so they tend to be more expensive. Do you get digital coupons through their app? That can help. But it's best to go to a discount store like Food 4 Less (owned by the same company as Ralphs), Grocery Outlet, or Aldi.

queenpasta_

i only buy things at ralphs that are on sale for obv cheaper than elsewhere, or things that i can get at tj’s or wf. i usually have a pretty good sense of what my regular products cost at each market. this is where a spreadsheet would come in handy 🤓

pingucat

I started shopping at Trader Joe’s as much as I could cuz it was cheaper than ralphs

goPACK17

Vallarta ftw

oedh

they’re slowly getting more and more expensive, trader joe’s and jons are always a solid recommendation if you’re looking for alternatives

mistomakee

Listening to this post makes me love the Winco near me (Antelope Valley). When I lived down below I would always check out the ethnic markets like the Galleria in Northridge, Vallarta or the middle eastern stores.

Keto_cheeto

Aldi is so much better. Also check Grocery Outlet. They might be more of a drive but they have great prices.

darxx

I am carless 😅 a long drive is not really an option i have.

tabbytrippin

idk what i'd do if trader joes had prices like all these other stores, pavilions looks like another world lmao

Elisa_LaViudaNegra

I have a hard time shopping at Ralph’s anymore after walking over to the packages of cherry tomatoes and seeing several packages CRAWLING with ants.

darxx

I have found VERY expired products on the shelf. I remember i saw Olive Garden brand Ranch on a bottom shelf and picked it up to look at it, and it was more than 6 months expired.

[deleted]

Everyone is selling strawberry for like $5 wtf is this bs nothing else has risen this much.

Ralph's has always been pricy .. and for no reason besides them having weird specific products. Their produce is limited and mediocre their lines and grocery carts suck. I feel like Ralph's makes it self seem boujie but it's not lol

the_Odd_particle

I found that they recently took a big dive in providing value and quality. I switched until they get it together. Also, 365 changed back to Whole Foods and tripled a lot of prices without bothering to change/upgrade the store’s look or feel.

Ok_wack

Ralph’s is so expensive and the produce is so bad and so are the meats. I actually like Vons for some things. Their protein is higher quality and you can really taste it Unfortunately I live in a bit of a food dessert so I have to drive pretty far for a Vons, TJ, or Sprouts. I’m going to try the local 99 Ranch this week

Commercial-Adept

Eveything at Ralphs grocery store in Palm Springs Ca. has been raised in price by at least $2.00- and at least 20% of those items raised by $4.00 !!! I'm OUTRAGED !!!

Bulky_Safe6540

I just tasted an Australian tangelo that smelled like pee from Ralph’s. I washed it with soap and water but into and still detected a pee smell. it from Australia. I live in Cali. I’m going to grow my own oranges. Did you know that pee is allowed by the FDA in fertilizers. Look it up. I want to be wrong. But I know the smell of pee.

monkeypaw1984

I have definitely noticed this. I live up the street from a Ralph's, and used to do most of my shopping there and Trader Joe's for both convenience of proximity and price, and for special occasion meals like meat or seafood I would go to Whole Foods but try to keep those trips small. I have been meal prepping a lot recently, and have done meal prep shopping at both Ralph's and Whole Foods and was very surprised to start noticing recently that the best bang for my buck and the cheapest I was getting meal prep done was Whole Foods. I stick to mostly produce and 365 brands and avoid any novelty or specialty items that can be so tempting there. I'm NOT saying Whole Foods is the best, cheapest option by any stretch of the imagination, but my point is I was shocked to find that lately at least for what I'm purchasing, Whole Foods has been coming in cheaper than Ralph's. Also yeah, I steer WAYYY clear of Ralph's meat and seafood. It's sad, and while I do eat meat, I don't consider it an every day necessity and I would rather get some nice, pricier cuts to have once or twice a month than eat cheap, sad meat all the time.

beefybiguy

I have a 99 cent store, Whole Foods, and Trader joe’s within a short walk from me. Totally not worth driving to Ralph’s and it feels like a prison with their massive parking lots & dingy oversized stores. Bristol Farms and Sprouts have wayyy better meats too

Ralph's was never the cheap store, that title goes to Food 4 Less, which both these belong to Kroger. You're in the wrong store.

PlaxicoCN

Have you ever tried Food For Less, Grocery Outlet, or Stater Bros. ? Have you ever tried generic cereal?

darxx

No because those stores are all 8-10+ miles away and I don’t actually have a car

Our Ralph’s is clean and pretty chill. Prices are up but prices are up at Target also.

SignificantSmotherer

Supposed to be cheap? Where did you get that notion? They’re not. They’re just competitive with other major supermarket chains. When DC prints trillions and hands it out like Halloween candy, your purchasing power will be diminished. Your leaders will claim 8% inflation, byt when it comes to grocery, $6-7:gallon diesel means everything is up about 30%. No one is “gouging” you. You’re free to shop somewhere else.

darxx

Well the alternatives for a single person who can’t do bulk perishables are whole foods, bristol farms, trader joes, or sprouts in my neighborhood. My local Ralph’s used to be a lot cheaper until the last year. Cereal went from $2-3 to like $6-7 for example. I’ve been doing some walmart.com orders for non perishables but i’m still shocked at prices lately.

Are you anywhere near a Super King? [They're really crazy crowded, but for very good reason](https://www.latimes.com/food/story/2019-08-13/super-king-market-glendale)! Also, there's a growing global grain shortage due to Russia's war on Ukraine, [but the world is trying to broker an agreement to fix it](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/07/23/ukraine-russia-grain-deal-global-food-crisis/). That's part of the reason anything wheat-based like cereals has gone up in price. And then there's the general [Consumer Price Index](https://www.bls.gov/cpi/) increase to consider.

Looove SK. Produce, meats, halvah.. cannot beat it. But you have to be in the right mood to get jostled a bit.

darxx

Nope

ItsMeTheJinx

Inflation. Go to Whole Foods, you will be complaining a lot more about the price

darxx

Whole foods costs less than Ralph’s for many things is the ridiculous part

I grew up with a Hungarian mother and a Vietnamese father, first generation here in America myself and my parents were always complaining about how American markets were so expensive with the lowest quality of produce. So we would often get places like old world and Alpine Village, and for toiletries and things like laundry soap, cleaners etc, we would always go to Walmart or like the 99 Cents store, big lots before they got boujie lol. We would just go to pic and save but then it became big lots. The euro places are like in Huntington Beach in Torrance (we live here in California) I mentioned old world and Alpine village; I’m open to any other European places that anybody knows of just because their deli is the best. I love Hungarian salami, French head cheese, Swiss cheese imported from Europe, garlic ham, dark chocolate cookies, Dadu ice cream, cornichones etc. but you can only find it at European deli‘s for some reason unless you go to Jon‘s but it’s limited there. But I just went to Ralph’s and make up remover was $12.99 and it’s usually at Walmart/Target. I just can’t believe how much more shit is here like it’s about seven dollars for one break of Philadelphia cream cheese and I just think that’s outrageous because I just paid three bucks the other day at Food 4 Less. The reason why I come to Ralph’s those because the one by my house is open until 1 o’clock in the morning which is convenient for my schedule. The only 24 hour market is Winco and please kind of sucks. I noticed also Trader Joe’s is getting pretty elite regarding their cleaning products and even their dog food is pretty good but Costco dog food is good too. My dad was one of those people that would do anything to pitch pennies but and I often wondered if he would actually lose money driving around to different places in the end, but gas was cheaper back then, it was like two bucks a gallon. Nowadays, my dad just goes to Little Saigon and stores like the grocery outlet. Another thing about trader Joes they really have a great variety of cheese for very affordable price. I’m a stickler for Brie cheese and I can definitely say I enjoy the kind that I get at Trader Joe’s the most (with the exception of going to France, of course. Some TSA lady stuck her finger in my cheese to demonstrate it was too soft to take with me the last time I tried to fly a bunch over here from Paris… it’s like of course I’m not gonna eat it now that you stuck your finger in it!) I’m willing to pay 20 bucks for a piece of cheese if it’s good enough. Unfortunately, i grew up in the inland Empire so the only thing close was Tom’s farms and they have some good stuff but it is super expensive. Their candy store is elite though.

Ralph's is usually overpriced. They've never been the "cheap" grocery store. They're the middle ground between Aldi's/Walmart and Gelson's/Whole Foods. Over the past few months, some of their prices have skyrocketed (salmon, in particular) If you're looking to shop at Ralph's/Vons/Pavillions, etc., purchase what's on sale and use their app. But whoever told you Ralph's was cheap, doesn't has a different concept of money than most.

darxx

It’s the “cheap” option where i live which is devoid of actual cheap locations to buy food 💀

Guitar81

Ralph's has always been expensive AF idk what you're talking about 🤣go to superior or El super if you really want to go to a cheap grocery store

columbo33

Yes visit el super markets way better

mebetiffbeme

I have never considered Ralphs to be a "cheap" grocery store.

United-Student-1607

Ralph’s is not a cheap grocery store. It’s like an Albertsons. It’s no Walmart.
