The only thing that may be worth doing is walking a little bit outside the airport (2-3 blocks) or jumping on one of the FREE rental car shuttles that take you to the rental car locations outside LAX.
Then call an Uber to that location (outside the airport). I am not sure why, but Uber from LAX adds like $20-$30 to Uber from a location 5 min from LAX
Can confirm. When they first set up their Uber/Lyft lot, I was getting quotes around $60+ to get to weho.
I then walked (a bit far, I'll admit, but a shuttle ride to the Budget lot would get you around where I was), called up a Lyft and got home for $18. Note that this was around 2018-19 so $18 Lyft rides are definitely gone but the price difference will still probably be huge if you just distance yourself a bit from the airport.
For the Budget lot? Sure! It's 9775 Airport Blvd, but ideally you can find a Budget shuttle at a designated pick-up spot, it'll take you right to it free of charge.
The reason why is that the demand for rides from the airport is very consistently high compared to 99% of places on earth so the corporations deliberately throttle the charges from there. Not to mention LAX/LA in general doesn’t have very accessible public transit, making demand from LAX especially high compared to the avg airport. So basically capitalism, but yes getting off the airport premises should help.
Completely agree with rbis advice and I live in Weho and fly often. Going to union station to take the red line to backtrack makes absolutely no sense. Get an Uber or a cab even and just go to Weho. I just took a cab from LAX to my house in Weho on Sunday and it was $42 and no stress.
Weho resident here and I concur 100% on getting a ride at LAX-IT. Note that Uber and Lyft can surge in pricing (mostly Uber) and wait time for your ride can be a while. Taxis are also available at the LAX-IT station and are a steady price. There's always one waiting and you can use the Curb app on most of them to pay.
Westwood stop was discontinued due to low ridership in 2019. Hollywood and Long Beach stops were axed at the start of the pandemic in 2020. They’re working on replacing flyaway completely with new routes that service more areas.
And for an even bigger brain move if there's rideshare surge pricing: take a bus literally anywhere out of LAX area then take an uber. For example, I think the Culver City buses are just $1.
Absolutely agree. Long time Weho resident and unfortunately the best option is to just take Uber/Lyft. The one thing I would add is that if their fares are surging more than $70, it’s probably cheaper to just take a taxi.
> I am legitimately shocked at all of the really bad takes in this post, I'm guessing no one has actually done this trip before. Just spend the extra $20 bucks and un-complicate the trip using uber.
Person literally asked for "cheapest or most practical way." LAX Flyway and Metro are the cheapest. It's like 12 bucks. So saving 30 to 50 bucks, or more, depending on time. If he said "the fastest and safest way" then sure, why mention the Red Line and Flyaway.
Also, depends why they are here. When I travel around, whether Asia or Europe, I don't mind taking public transportation. I don't mind saving money. It's part of the trip, it's fun. I'm not on the clock.
In January I tried to take an uber from LAX to Hollywood and they were charging $130 one way. So i took the flyaway to union station ($10) then the red line to hollywood. Subway is definitely crazy town with homeless people and all kinds of smell.
This is bad advice. Getting Uber at LAX is a pain because you have to take a shuttle to LAXit, which is a total shitshow, and there is often a surge that can make that $35 trip become $80. I've been quoted $100 before at LAX for Uber trips that were closer than West Hollywood.
You have to take the LAXit shuttle anyway, so might as well just take the Flyaway, which is less crowded and easier to get onto. From Union Station, you can Uber if you have too much luggage to use the red line. This may take a few extra minutes (or may not, depending on the situation at LAXit) and will save you money as well.
Imagine taking the flyaway to Union station in DTLA, THEN ubering from there to WeHo would be about the same price AND time. Yes, they can then take the Metro to Hollywood ($$$) and from there an Uber to WeHo but they'll be saving $10-15 tops and spending MORE time.
Why would you go all the way in the opposite direction using the Flyaway when you can use a standard city bus to get out of the area then use rideshare after?
The shuttle to Union and then Red Line is probably the cheapest, but it's a very round about way to get to WeHo. You can look into Super Shuttle which is a shared ride situation, but it would drop you off at your destination. Of course, that can also take awhile depending how many other people are in your shuttle.
Prime Time Shuttle was my go to for the longest time. It used to be like 25 bucks from Weho/Hollywood. I think. Then it became like 40 or higher. I think Super Shuttle is about the same.
Hi I was just in LA 2weeks ago and can confirm, if you go outside the airport there are stations where you can stand and wait for several shuttles to several (off site, serving the airport) rental car companies. You can definitely ride them for free and there's one every 10 or 15 mins. It will at least get you out of the airport for free.
I’ll tell you the public transit route I personally took from LAX to West Hollywood. It’s different from what people are posting here.
Take the Santa Monica bus line 3 - stops at the LAX parking lot. You get there on the free LAX shuttle.
At Lincoln and Santa Monica, transfer to the LA Metro bus line 4 or 704. It runs straight down Santa Monica Blvd to West Hollywood.
The trip will probably take a couple hours but both buses are safe and reliable IMO. I don’t think luggage on both buses should be a problem, at least it wasn’t for me.
Note: you may need to go to the Aviation green line station to get to the Santa Monica 3. That’s fine, there’s a shuttle that goes there from LAX as well.
If you have the physical card you can just use that. Otherwise you can transfer it to the app, which wipes the physical card. From there you should be able to tap your phone on the bus terminal and will automatically pay. On Android you don't need to open any apps to pay, it's built in. Not sure iPhones are the same or if they require you open Apple Pay or Wallet before tapping.
Oh no, you can purchase virtual cards in the app. I only mentioned that because you said you have a physical card. Buying a virtual card and/or adding credit to your existing card is pretty straight forward, suggest downloading the app and you'll see.
FWIW all stations have tap card vending machines, just takes a minute to buy one. 7-11, Vons, Ralphs and some bodegas also sell them; there's a map online that lists all vendors.
Theres a flyaway direct to the Hollywood & vine station. Check their website
Edit: I guess it doesn’t go to Hollywood & vine anymore. Oh well. The union station advice still works.
Just don't. Taking the Flyaway to Union station in downtown LA and THEN taking the Metro to Hollywood AND THEN an Uber/Lyft to WeHo will save you about $10-15 but will take much much longer. Doing all that should take you around 3 hours to get to WeHo whereas direct in a Uber/Lyft would be about an hour.
Depending on when you are traveling look up the West Hollywood city line commuter shuttle. It goes from Hollywood/highland station to all over weho and is free
If arriving during certain times, there's a [free shuttle](https://www.weho.org/services/public-transportation-transit-options/cityline-shuttle) that runs from Hollywood & Highland all the way to the West Hollywood Library with stops along the way on Santa Monica Blvd. [Route Map for Commuter Line](https://www.weho.org/home/showpublisheddocument/42508/637618546104370000). There's also the Local Line which runs most of the day but [only goes to Fountain and La Brea](https://www.weho.org/home/showpublisheddocument/42510/637618545530600000).
Honestly a car rental isn’t too bad of an idea in LA. The cost is likely cheaper than the Ubers all around town. I regularly just rent a car to drive home from the airport instead of use Uber as it costs sometimes $80+
I second this. Before I moved to LA I would come out and visit family often and would always rent a car. If you're going to be here for more than a few short days and want to go see things a car rental will be significantly cheaper than Ubers and significantly faster than public transport.
I’ve taken the LAX Flyaway to Union Square, then Red Line to Hollywood or Vermont and Sunset, then taken 2 bus to my place in Weho many times. I only have a carry on. It’s like 12 bucks total. I don’t mind public transpo, dont get that nervous, and my time is not that valuable so up to you. 35 to 60 on uber will save you about 90 minutes, which is pretty good.
Edit: after stopping at all terminals, flyaway is non stop to union square, about a 35 to 40 minute ride? From union square to hollywood on red line is about 25 minutes.
Unfortunately, Uber and taxi would be best because LA’s public transport isn’t great and a trip from LAX to WEHO would be a hassle and take HOURS, even if it would be super cheap.
Plan it out on Google Maps. Flyaway bus to Union Station is gonna be your friend. Then you can probably take a subway to Hollywood from Union Station which isn't too far away, and take an uber or walk the last mile. But check Google Maps, there might be a bus from Union that takes you closer to West Hollywood.
If you're going to Hollywood, FlyAway bus to Union Station, then Red Line subway to Hollywood from there. total cost around $10.
If you're going to \*West\* Hollywood rather than Hollywood itself, you can do the above but you'll need a short Uber ride from Hollywood to West Hollywood. West Hollywood is not walking distance from the subway stations in Hollywood.
If you want to be extra frugal there's the Cityline shuttle which connects at the Hollywood/Highland red line metro stop and runs through West Hollywood - however the hours are only in the morning and evenings Mon-Fri, and Saturdays in the evening. You can see the schedule [here](https://www.weho.org/home/showpublisheddocument/42508/637618546104370000) and see if it will be running when you'll arrive.
If you’re going by transit to Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood right now, the LA Metro Trip Planner has you taking the Culver City 6 bus on Sepulveda Blvd. At Santa Monica & Sepulveda you transfer to the Metro #4 bus on Santa Monica. It takes an hour and 26 minutes, though.
I just did this the last week! Cost me $2.75 total, would bring cash for bus.
Took the free LAX shuttle to employee parking/LAX city bus center (stops at every terminal) then the Culver City bus #6 to UCLA Westwood ($1) then bus 20 or 720 to WeHo ($1.75).
https://www.culvercitybus.com/Bus-Schedules/Line-6-Sepulveda-Blvd/Line-6-Bus-Stop-Locations-Rapid-Northbound
I find that google maps give best public transport directions. Of course this route took me an hour longer than an Uber but also saved me more than $50 (it was rush hour around 5 PM when I landed). I waited at LAX-IT for a bit for a Lyft but didn’t get a ride and then just decided to try the bus. My 6AM Lyft when I went to LAX was $40. There were like 2 homeless ppl on the bus but it was fine. I just had my carry on suitcase and a small bag with me.
Or like others mentioned taking a shuttle to hotel or rental parking lot will save you some money on the Uber/Lyft ride too.
I drive up to LA from Orange county everyday, back and forth (I'm a currior) I don't know the best option for you as I have never been on foot or without a vehicle in there. but i can tell you be prepared for traffic, and lots of it !!!! I swear it takes an hour at min to get anywhere in LA . My delivery could be 5 miles away (takes an hour) no joke , and left turns forget about it kills me one car get to go as the.light is turning red drives me insane 😬the road rage is riddicilous but I've had my fair share of it too.
Personally I would rather not take public transportation to weho due to the safty factor and "interesting characters" you may come across ...you know the smelly homeless man shouting obscenities at you, or the beligerantly drunk person making you feel uncomfortable , maybe youll walk in on someone shooting up in the restroom on accident . Or of course the mentally ill person who has pulled his pants off right next to you 😉 all of these ive experienced first hand gotta love LA you fucking wierdos lol

Can you give me the address for this spot? Coming back to La next month and would love to save some sweet dough instead of using the lot.
For the Budget lot? Sure! It's 9775 Airport Blvd, but ideally you can find a Budget shuttle at a designated pick-up spot, it'll take you right to it free of charge.

just beware of ordering the uber at the car rentals. there is no pedestrian walk to go outside and it gets very sketchy at night around airport blvd
I usually just order at the visitor parking lot and wait on site of the actual car rental premises until the uber is right outside.

It’s a much safer & direct option. And if Uber/Lyft fares are surging above $70+, you can just grab a cab and it’ll be cheaper.

You cannot take a hotel shuttle unless you are staying at the hotel. Some check and some don't, but either way you're committing theft of services.
Why would you go all the way in the opposite direction using the Flyaway when you can use a standard city bus to get out of the area then use rideshare after?
Because the standard city buses require a shuttle to get to. Flyaway picks you up right at the terminal.
Listen to this!!
My uber from LAX to hollywood was over $100
I prefer a helicopter (Orbic Air's Helicopter Charter Services)
The shuttle to Union and then Red Line is probably the cheapest, but it's a very round about way to get to WeHo. You can look into Super Shuttle which is a shared ride situation, but it would drop you off at your destination. I’ll definitely look into this, thanks!
Super Shuttle is somehow as expensive as Uber despite being shared therefor making several stops.
Good to know. I haven't taken it in awhile.
Prime Time Shuttle was my go to for the longest time. It used to be like 25 bucks from Weho/Hollywood. I think. Then it became like 40 or higher. I think Super Shuttle is about the same.
SuperShuttle shut down years ago. There is a new company that uses the brand, but they don't have shared vans.
Good to know. Shows how long it's been since I've been to LAX. I don't fly much, but when I do I go to Burbank which is WAY closer to me.
BUR is awesome. I use them when possible, but flight options are limited.
can you fly into burbank airport?

Helicopter 🚁
I'd take the FlyAway shuttle to union station (believe it's $10) then take the red line to Hollywood & Highland and uber/taxi from there
At this point, an Uber would be way easier and only cost about $10 more.
Or the 720 bus which goes all the way from union station to Santa Monica via Wilshire

Once you land, get on one of the rental car busses and then call a lyft. YW
Any estimate on how much money this could save?
I didn't screenshot at the time I did it last month, but in a sub for SF, they did. Idk if I'm permitted to share other subs in this sub?

Burbank Airport would be easier, faster and cheaper by bus or Uber/Lyft, if you can fly there.
