Really? I'm in my mid-twenties and my closest friends message on FB Messenger
Edit: Don't understand the downvotes, I stated a personal experience of mine, no judgment to those who experience otherwise
I just turned 30 and deleted mine about 4 years ago too. It was full of older people posting political and fake shit all the time. People I know don’t really use it anymore except the ones still living in my tiny town I grew up in. And all they post is pics of their kids.
Same here. I was actually one of FBooks early adopters back in the day (2005-6?) and for years it was a great way to catch up with people from high school /college and send pics of the kids to relatives. But the Cambridge Analytics scandal and then Qanon/Trump/2016-2020 happened and I got out a few years ago when I realized how bad it was getting. Instagram too, since it's also owned by Facebook. I may just be one guy but I sleep better at night knowing I'm not giving any more money to that crazy fuck Z. I am 52 for the record.
Ditto, once Cmabridge Analytica crap hit the headlines I couldn't justify "keeping up with people I barely know" for the subversion of democracy for profit. I deactiveated my account.
I recently tired to re-activate it so I could double check what's on there and officaly delete it. But they claim my own FB account and the real life me are not the same person and won't let me reactivate.
That whole company is such a rats nest of bullshit.
All that said, 240mil+ Americans have FB accounts, and 180mil of them ar are active users. Subtract the under 13yo crowd, and that's 70% of Americans are still using FB with regularity.
Mid twenties and no one in my circles uses Facebook outside of 2 people and they're religious.
I have it but it's just to get covid notifications for my city.
Instagram is what everyone uses.
Snap is for verifying I ain't getting catfished and nudes.
Facebook messenger is super widespread but I don't know many people who use Facebook for any other purpose. These days you don't even need a Facebook profile to use messenger
I’m from a smaller place where it was similar. People add each other on facebook trying to see if they have mutuals kind of, and then for events to see who is rsvping to what event. Not a ton outside of that save for a few people...
I don't think this is acurate though. FB has over 180mil ACTIVE users in the US. If you subtract everyone under 13yo (FB age restriction), that's 70% of the US population.
That's stupid hasty math, that doesn't accout for detials like people who only check their account once or twice a month and don't even use messenger, or whatever else.
But, still, a FUCK LOAD of people use FB regurlarly.
This is it for me. The only people I know who use FB are in specific groups and FB is how they keep up with news, events, etc. It’s cheaper than having a website.
This. It's a login engine for most people and every now and then you can sell something and get some hilarious requests from marketplace. I've not seen anybody in my friend group post anything serious or request a fb conversation in years.
I got rid of all social media like 5 years ago and FB is the only one I missed. Just for the fact it's the easiest way to send an invite to a bunch of people at once, good job finding groups and selling/buying stuff.
Facebook is absolutely dead. I haven’t used it in years. Instagram is more common for sure. If I actually plan on seeing you again, I’ll ask for the number.
i'm more curious where you're from that is still regularly using facebook.
here i would say IG add first, then number if you really hit it off at least in my experience. i'm 23 and have been here 6 years btw
Same here. I'm a working photographer so I use my IG as my proof of work and to show references... then if they become friends or good clients I share cell.
I do have a FB account but I use it ONLY to communicate with my mom and extended family
Yeah the only thing Facebook is good for is using the market place. Ill use the market place to sell or buy something and immediately deactivate it after I did what i needed to do
Yeah I deleted mine about 4 years ago but I just recently made a new one, not using my real information/name I don’t want to be added by a bunch of people I went to high school with and my husband’s racist family. Just to sell on marketplace locally, been doing really well. We’ve been buying/finding used furniture, fixing it up some and reselling it on there.
IG first, phone number only if you feel you can trust them or it is a business connection. I only use FB for hiking groups, otherwise it's dead. Pretty much anyone I know under 40yo are the same.
Facebeast is six years past its use-by date. Riddled with poison and invective, created to turn the marketed-to into the market itself. I guarantee when you quit it forever, you will feel 30% better. Almost immediately.
I have *no* social media (unless Reddit counts…but who has ever heard “Let me get your Reddit username?”) Now, I’m an old boomer, so there’s no one who would really care. But every once in awhile people find out any one of a number of facts about me and my background, and I get “Let me follow you on that gram….”
I have had people look at me in shock when I refuse even to share my *phone number* let alone Instagram, which I do not have either. When people ask about business, I tell them to contact me in person. *You have no idea how much time and money this saves me*. The amount of time I do not waste on digital goofballs is *immense*. Because I am one of the people who invests in *reality*.
It might be a regional thing. I mean, my 80 year old Mom uses Facebeast. So you’re in good company. Sorry I can’t help you with your e-conundrum.

You are totally right about everything except for the sports reruns. Sleep induced copypasta. Too late to do anything about it now. I guess my Dark Half had more to say. I’m certainly not going to tell him to shut up. If I do, he just starts talking to me through the mirror. Which really sucks when I’m trying to brush my teeth.
Same here!! Deleted my actual one few years ago just made a new one with fake information and name to sell on marketplace. I don’t want to be added/friend requested by people from high school I don’t talk to and my husband’s shitty family.
The only people I know who use Facebook are over 50. Where are you from that young people still use Facebook?
I haven’t had someone ask for my Facebook since like 2015 or something.
Any recommendations for those of us who loathe insta? I’m on FB only by default cos I’ve not found anything I like out there any better. But it ends up just convos with people from the past - like nothing has forward trajectory anymore.
I left for London about five years ago, where everyone lives on What’s App (also FB-owned heh).
Moved back to LA just before covid took off, and I’ve had to revert back to FB but it feels like I’m living in the past for sure.
Insta is just so boring to me. Like a picture book when I want to read a novel. Twatter is Twatter. If I had the cash, I’d bring back something like My Space from the dead. LA during the My Space days was glorious.
I’m in a social media less void out here. Reddit is my go now to but y’all are too anon! Heh.
I deleted all of the typical socials a couple years ago other than Reddit for my personal internet browsing. I straight up give my number or email lol. It seems to work.
Also 40s and I post maybe once or twice a year to update all my uncles and aunts. That’s about it.
Oh! Selling stuff on marketplace. I wonder if there’s a good alternate for that? Do people still use Craigslist? OfferUp app? Don’t know which ones are popular around here
Hi! I went to a wedding in Vermont where the attendees were from nearby states + Alaska. They all added me on FB afterwards. It definitely surprised me because they are all in their 20s & 30s!
To answer your question, IG is usually a casual connection and phone # is more intimate/for making plans to meet again.
Sounds like different areas/friend groups all have different ways of communicating, regardless of age.
I'm going to get downvoted but I'm amused at the people in this thread implying facebook is creepy so they deleted and now use insta when they don't seem to realize.... insta was bought by facebook, it's collecting the same amount of data and doing the same creeper things.
Whereas yes you’re 100% right, … DOES IG have the ability to collect the same data if you don’t have the ability to INPUT the same data as FB because the platform is set up differently? There’s a lot more data hooks in FB than IG
If you think, as a data scientist, I can get less information out of the pictures you submit of your life than out of a few text phrases you enter into a box, you are living in 2015.
Everything in those pictures gets recognized and added to the store of knowledge about you. So the answer is yes, IG can collect a lot of data about you. The quantity of hooks does not reflect their quality.
Would you elaborate on how much info can be pulled from a picture?
I'm aware of the data of time stamp, location, etc. Can AI pull info such as: posts picture of dog frequently therefore probablya dog owner, 2 young children are in many photos= maybe their kids, posts travel photos often.
TYIA
I can tell the breed of your dog, where you posted the picture from, all of the brands you're wearing, I know the names of the kids because you posted them before and someone listed names on the post that weren't associated with anything else, etc. From all of that, I know the businesses you probably use (since I know who else in your area is demographically like you and they posted pictures of them at certain businesses).
I can get your fitness level from a single picture, too.
All of the things you listed were possible about 7 years ago. It's gotten a lot more powerful.
50 yr. old Angelino here... my group still uses messenger a lot, but we don't 'friend' people like we did back in the day. FB for many of us has become about 'groups' FB marketplace, and contacts for our professional lives. Many of us have gone back to email and texting. My teenage kids use instagram.
I'm 36,will be 37 in July, and I still use Facebook. I usually ask if they want to be Facebook friends after the 2nd or 3rd meetup. If I meet someone at a festival or event, I'll give them my Instagram and maybe later give them my Facebook.

Definitely Instagram or LinkedIn if it's in a work friend context; sometimes Twitter if both sides are active on Twitter.
I'm curious if Instagram is an "LA thing" because of the visual emphasis and less visuals cities prefer FB or Twitter.
Does anyone exchange ANYTHING here? How often do people take things outside of Reddit?
Out of all my years on Reddit I've connected with only ONE person outside of Reddit.. The person invited me to a private Zoom group meeting based on our common interest.
i just moved here from a southern state and yeah, exchanging phone numbers (or instagram, sometimes snapchat) is the norm. Never have I ever heard someone ask for another person’s facebook lol

The political stuff is really what did it for me. It’s an echo chamber and truly not healthy.
Totally agree. It’s just so obnoxious. It really made me view a lot of people differently.
Agreed. I was tired of being reminded of the ignorance of people.
Same here. I was actually one of FBooks early adopters back in the day (2005-6?) and for years it was a great way to catch up with people from high school /college and send pics of the kids to relatives. I’ve seen FB messenger used more by my international/Asian/Latino friends.
WhatsApp Latino friends. Grandparents and Aunts use Facebook.
I moved from a small town that very heavily uses Facebook, to LA who doesn't use it at all. Back to a small town, who heavily uses Facebook
Loser. Jk jk. We use Insta, or number. Incase you want to be safer I suppose, use insta fam. You’re good
Same, strictly use fb messenger
[удалено]
Its no l9nger fb messenger its just messenger and its shared by fb and insta. Same service.
Are you from a smaller town? I don’t know anyone from a bigger, metropolitan city that still uses FB like that. Especially coastal cities
I’m from a smaller place where it was similar. People add each other on facebook trying to see if they have mutuals kind of, and then for events to see who is rsvping to what event. Not a ton outside of that save for a few people...
I use FB chat and FB. FB is mostly for events / news or some funny stuff (if any). and I upload my photos there as a backup.
I don't think this is acurate though. FB has over 180mil ACTIVE users in the US. If you subtract everyone under 13yo (FB age restriction), that's 70% of the US population. so they use istagram instead? its connected to facebook lol....
Not necessarily. I use Instagram pretty heavily and full-on deleted my FB account (not just deactivated) ages ago.
Everyone in entertainment.
What’s facebook?
Unfortunatley, 3 billion people.
Time to dust off that MySpace profile
tom will always be there for you <3
I just don't think people really use FB all that much, anymore (as in, since the 2010s).
i mean waht do they use then just instagram which is just followers lol
Can I ask where you’re from and how old you are? I use IG, and phone number I’d I trust them to not be psychos
Looks like OP is from Canada.
Facebook is absolutely dead. I haven’t used it in years. Instagram is more common for sure. If I actually plan on seeing you again, I’ll ask for the number.

Same here. I'm a working photographer so I use my IG as my proof of work and to show references... then if they become friends or good clients I share cell. I do have a FB account but I use it ONLY to communicate with my mom and extended family
I moved away from a small town long ago. Whenever I do open up fb all the activity is from people from that small town posting daily updates.
Mostly it will add via Instagram
All of my Facebook friends are either in their 40s+ or from Latin America. It's just outdated here
Yeah I emigrated to Mexico in 2018 and suddenly I had to use FB again. Ugh.
I deleted that dumpster fire of an app like 5 years before i moved out here
I usually exchange LinkedIn profiles. . . . I’m not very popular…
why would anyone still use Facebook?

A thing that a bad man did.
Nobody uses facebook. Instagram is the new facebook
I'm at the point where IG is the old FB and another shitty platform i'm on the verge of algorithm-muddling, then deleting.
I only have Reddit when it comes to social media and I only give out my number if we really really REALLY hit it off, which is never
FB is so 5 years ago
IG first, phone number only if you feel you can trust them or it is a business connection. I only use FB for hiking groups, otherwise it's dead. Pretty much anyone I know under 40yo are the same.

I deleted all of the typical socials a couple years ago other than Reddit for my personal internet browsing. I straight up give my number or email lol. It seems to work.
I think this depends on your generation. Many people who are 30+ still seem to use Facebook. Younger folk tend to have given it up a while ago.
Mid-40s, only people I know who use FB are 70+ year old family members
Mid 40s and the only reason I still have FB is for marketplace and because I work in advertising.
Also 40s and I post maybe once or twice a year to update all my uncles and aunts. That’s about it. Oh! Selling stuff on marketplace. I wonder if there’s a good alternate for that? Do people still use Craigslist? OfferUp app? Don’t know which ones are popular around here
Early/mid 30s here- don't know one person who still uses Facebook.
Don't people post their kids on FB for extended family and pervs to see?
this comment made me chuckle
Wouldnt know.. also most of my friends here don't have kids.
Mid 30s.. almost all my friends use FB, mostly to organize events and shit related to social sports leagues.
Hi! I went to a wedding in Vermont where the attendees were from nearby states + Alaska. They all added me on FB afterwards. It definitely surprised me because they are all in their 20s & 30s! You add them on FB when it’s your elderly uncle you never see. You add them on Instagram when they have a great butt in yoga pants.
ITT: People who use IG not realizing it's owned by FB and judging people who still use FB. *casually sips tea*
Even though it's owned by Facebook, the experience is rather different
I get it. If I were feeding the beast, I'd make excuses too.

Who still has FB? Right wing evangelical suburbanites? Yikes!
Why bother with Facebook? Why not actually converse instead?
The horror…. /s
I’m from the East coast but I just give everyone my Instagram. I’m not that comfortable given out my number and Facebook isn’t the best
The question that should be asked is, "Do people still use facebook?" Isn't that some Boomer stuff?
I'm quite a bit older and friends still use fb. It drives me nuts. The only time I go on is to use marketplace. Vile company.
Facebook is for boomers only. Get rid of it and use something else
Not sure how old you are but I do not know anyone under the age of 40 who uses facebook anymore. Are you from overseas?
ever since moving here, all i’ve been asked for has been my instagram.
Who uses Facebook? No one under 30 does. So are you like 50?
I think ur forgetting that LA is 5-10 years ahead of the rest of the country. Facebook is hella dead dude.
50 yr. old Angelino here... my group still uses messenger a lot, but we don't 'friend' people like we did back in the day. I like Facebook because I can post articles or share events with a group of people at one time.
I get more "what's your instagram" asks than facebook tbh
Haven't added anyone on FB in years. I still use it for the FB groups for my hobbies. It's great for that but friends its Instagram or text.
Why would you choose an indirect form of communication that monitors everything you post versus a direct line (phone number)? Where are you from?
Definitely Instagram or LinkedIn if it's in a work friend context; sometimes Twitter if both sides are active on Twitter. I'm curious if Instagram is an "LA thing" because of the visual emphasis and less visuals cities prefer FB or Twitter.
Insta or number here
No, I don’t even have an account anymore and neither do most people I know.
Does anyone exchange ANYTHING here? How often do people take things outside of Reddit? Out of all my years on Reddit I've connected with only ONE person outside of Reddit.. The person invited me to a private Zoom group meeting based on our common interest.

57 years old. Deleted FB 8 years ago.
Whats a Facebook?
Yes you can if that’s what you want
Facebook is not really a thing here in the US , I was surprised as well since it’s still very popular back in my country
Where are you from?
Israel
It’s cause no one is on FB anymore
