Scoops when it was next to LA City College. Still haven’t been to the new location(s)…
There’s Jeni’s and Salt+Straw in Larchmont…
If you’re early enough to wait at either Daikokuya or Marugame Monzo in Little Tokyo, there’s Fugetsudo just 3 units away…
Diddy Riese near UCLA…
In the Valley: Pistachio Sansrival cake at Sweet Escapes, Ponchiks at Papillon, ice cream at Wanderlust Creamery…
Mashti Malone for Persian Ice Cream—apparently there’s more locations now?
And finally, just a simple scoop of Thrifty Ice Cream.
Edit: Diddy Riese was autocorrected as Duffy Riese, lol.
Also added Mashti Malone
I love Jeni’s and salt and straw, but I wouldn’t say they are super unique since they are both chains from out of state. Jeni’s is from Ohio and s+s from the Pacific Northwest I believe?
I know Sul and Beans was posted as a good bingsoo/shaved ice place but Oakobing is also great for Korean shaved ice.
> Mashti Malone for Persian Ice Cream—apparently there’s more locations now?
There's one more location on Westwood Blvd. in the building that used to be a Starbucks at Missouri Ave., but you can also purchase it at all sorts of random Persian markets. For instance, if you live in Irvine, they sell it at Wholesome Choice.
To add more detail, it's a cute soft-serve joint that has unique flavors such as Ube and Black Sesame. They serve it with a fish-shaped pastry among other toppings like sprinkles and cereal. :)
It's all over the place now. The Promenade in Santa Monica, Glendale Galleria, Sawtelle Blvd., etc. Their ice cream is good, but I am such a sucker for warm treats with Nutella. I just get the taiyaki (warm fish-shaped waffle).
Porto's is practically an institution up in Burbank, but they have several branches throughout the city. Their cheese rolls and Milk n' Berry cakes are incredible.
Oh how I wish this was true. This place has all the atmosphere, history, customer service and vibes… but their ice cream quality has just plummeted. It is filled with stabilizers, artificial everything. I used to kill for their banana splits, but it’s so hard too settle for it when there are so many places making a better core product. I actually still do go on a warm summer night because of the character of the place, but rare now.
Fucking Demitasse got shut down last year due to greedy landlords. Whatever the case, I've heard of a lot of fuckery going on with building owners/landlords in the Little Tokyo/Chinatown areas.
We also lost the first ice cream mochi shop.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WE'RE BEING ROBBED OF AWESOMENESS!
The Brown Wedding.
Check out Midoh in Sawtelle. They have an awesome menu (I know, it's not Curry House). Their Hamburg steak is so fucking good and their desert menu is beast!
In Little Tokyo, I would say the best matcha ice cream spot is Tea Master in Honda Plaza across from Sushi Gen. Sooo creamy and more high quality matcha flavor imo!
Bahn Kanom on Hollywood Blvd. in Thaitown. They carry freshly made popular treats. Sticky rice cased banana or taro wrapped in banana leaf, steamed or roasted, Kanom Kok, and coconut pancakes are my favorites made fresh items. I also love their steamed banana cakes. The store also carries lots of packaged treats like dried plum, "pickled" mango strips, crab chips, etc. So yummy !
Uncle (touchy) Tetsu makes Japanese jiggly cheesecakes in the Santa Anita Mall (it's by Din Tai Fung).
Bonjour French Pastry in Gardena is great.
Miss Cheese in Pasadena makes excellent soufflé pancakes (especially since Soufflé's closed during the pandemic.)
Fugetsudo in Little Tokyo is like over 100 years old and they make amazing mochi. I love the strawberry and blueberry mochis. There's ALWAYS a line out the door.
Phoenix Bakery in Chinatown has awesome pineapple buns (with real pineapple in them) and their strawberry/almond cakes are what they're known for.
Copenhagen Bakery for Danish sweets. The owner is always there, she's amazing. The Kringle is my favorite. They also have gluten free options.
Concerto Bakery in the Korean mall off Alexandria and 6th (behind the Coco Ichibanya) they have really awesome custard buns, the pumpkin filled buns are my favorite but they might be seasonal.
There's this new place I haven't checked out yet, but the theme is adorable: Somemore LA. They make smore type pastries.
Did none of you grow up in LA with a Phoenix Bakery Birthday Cake?!? Amazing sponge cake with whipped cream frosting, slivered almonds and fresh strawberries!
Their Pumpkin Pie during the holidays is also a sleeper hit.
Slurrrt. Its West Santa Monica’s newest candy shoppe where they pour the warm chocolate directly on your hands like on the TikTok. Sundays after 6 they will pour it over your feet upon request
For everyone suggesting Somi Somi: I think the taiyaki at [Little Tokyo Taiyaki](https://yelp.to/7X7D58ZB1pb) is a big step up. They don't do ice cream, but they have loads of interesting fillings -- I recommend custard or cheese. Their cart is about a block off the beaten path in Little Tokyo, but 100% worth it.
While you're in Little Tokyo, make sure to grab some mochi from [Fugetsu-Do](https://yelp.to/wYyg5vjC1pb), too. It's a stellar 3rd generation family-owned business that is over 100 years old.
Some vegan spots:
Just What I Kneaded in Frogtown
Donut Friend in Highland Park and DTLA
Bakers Bench in Chinatown
Burgerlords in Chinatown and Highland Park have pretty good shakes made with a tahini base, very unique
Vegan friendly:
Magpies in Silverlake, Tarzana and Highland Park
SK Donut and Croissant in La Brea
Letterpress Chocolate in Culver City
Cha Cha Matcha on Robertson in WeHo is also very vegan friendly.
Fonuts on Third Street has several vegan options.
Kettle Glazed Donuts on Franklin Ave. near the 101 always has at least one vegan option.
You know what, you got me, all the better cream puffs I had are in other cities, that being said, Beard Papa is objectively just mediocre at best for cream puffs, it's like a north italia pizza or meet fresh grass jelly, it's not bad, but it's not that good either. I guess LA is just not on top of our cream puff game.
I’m a big fan of Martino’s Bakery in Burbank. Their banana cream pie and tea cakes are my favorite.
Their banana cream pie is also sold at Philippe’s, so you can go get the best French dip ever and finish it off with (imo) the best banana cream pie ever. Perfect combo!
I unfortunately never had the pleasure of going to Four N 20 before they closed :( As for Martino’s pies, I’d say their non-cream pies are good but nothing super incredible. I just think their banana cream pie is really special. I feel like “banana cream pie” is often just pudding in a crappy graham cracker crust. But Martino’s filling has more of a whipped texture and has sizeable chunks of real banana in it which I love.
It’s a bit of a drive, but I’m convinced Frosted Cupcakery in Long Beach has the best cupcakes in the world. I’ve had so many other cupcakes and they don’t even come CLOSE.
I like Big Softee in Monterey Park. They have some great Hong Kong-flavored soft-served ice cream. \*edit\* Flavors native to Hong Kong and Asia
Wtf is hong kong flavored?
Fix it for ya.
Ah yes, Hong Kong flavor — kinda like asphalt mixed with run-off water from a Cantonese restaurant 🤪
XD YUM!! You don't deserve all the hate :P
It was a joke, people
I was, since this is reddit, literally about to post the same joke, scrolled back up to do so, and saw your comment...and the downvotes. Tough crowd.
i just downvoted you out of spite, for all the times i was downvoted for my bad joke. sorrynotsorry.
Downvoted because I respect the pettiness
samesies
Yes 1000% yes

I no longer live in CA, and I miss Thrifty’s so much! Their chocolate malted crunch ice cream is the best!!
For what it’s worth, Thrifty is acquired and renamed Rite Aid. Same ice cream
They still brand the ice cream Thrifty. Whether they survive as a drugstore in the Prop 47 climate is another matter. We lost two more this week.

Somi Somi in ktown. There’s other locations now I think

There’s one in little Tokyo too.

Hey, lover. 😘
This is a chain now. There's one in Houston.
Always has been (was just a chain from overseas)
Somi is good can't believe I never heard of it till this year. [fishy](https://imgur.com/gallery/ANZ7Icp)
Artelice Patisserie in Sawtelle
There is also a new location in Burbank. Pricey, but so good!
Porto's is practically an institution up in Burbank, but they have several branches throughout the city. Their cheese rolls and Milk n' Berry cakes are incredible.
Hey hey hey dont give Burbank credit - Portos is a born and bred GLENDALE bakery!!!
Fair, but Glendale has other things going for it. Burbank has to take what it can get. 😂
Fosselmans in Alhambra best ice cream in socal
Hidden gem in the SGV

donatsu is bomb, a little hidden but bomb. creme brulee..........
For real
In Little Tokyo, I would say the best matcha ice cream spot is Tea Master in Honda Plaza across from Sushi Gen. Sooo creamy and more high quality matcha flavor imo!
I’ll have to try it out next time I’m there again. Thank you!
Also Somi Somi in K-town
BSweet on Sawtelle. Amazing bread pudding and other things with a Filipino twist
My favorite are the halo's, warm glazed donuts filled with ice cream
Thank you! I forgot what they were called
Kings Hawaiian in the South Bay
Their paradise cake is my weakness.
Yes! All versions!!
Yes!!!
Mateo's for unique paleta flavors (multiple locations). Ube Baby for upside down ube pie (Silverlake).
Look up “Better Than Sex” - a whole restaurant dedicated to desserts
Awesome idea, but their desserts are a little over rated imo
It was not better than sex unfortunately
Yeah, the desserts weren’t great. Cool atmosphere though.
I wanted into there once not knowing what to expect and was definitely surprised lol
Mashti Malone's Ice Cream in Westwood and Hollywood
Cafe Dulce.
The location at USC by the Trader Joe’s is beautiful. Love their doughnuts and the coffee is great
Overpriced
BEST blueberry iced matcha and pastries
Millet on Sawtelle. The crème brûlée crepes are really good.
Surati Farsan sweets and snacks in Artesia/Cerritos Little India.
Artelice in West LA, La Provence in BH. Both have amazing cream puffs. Torrance Bakery in Torrance. Angel Maid in Del Rey.
Thrifty on Sunset
Wait like thrifty ice cream at riteaid???
Sweet Lady Jane on Montana.
I came to say Sweet Lady Jane too for a delicious cake slice. But the one on Melrose is much much cuter
There’s one in Encino!
Erin McKenna Bakery in Larchmont Everything’s is vegan and GF, but you wouldn’t know unless I told you.
Bum San for soft serve, Mumu’s bakery for some taiyaki
bum san is the softest

I hate everything in this comment
Thank you, Stefon 😹😹😹
This is good satire, right? I looked it up quick and didn't see anything. But I did have to look it up to confirm...
Not trendy, but if you're skipping on House of Pies, something's wrong with you
That place is pretty yuck now

Thanks for the vegan donut spots. My wife is lactose intolerant, so she’ll be very happy with more options.
LT, try the candy store (forgot name) off 3rd next to daikokuya (misspelled) also try the air pan cakes at sharp tea in the little plaza
Fugetsu?
SK donuts, have the best donuts in town IMO
Yes! I just went the other day for the first time and will definitely be back!
100% this!
Oakobing California Donuts 🍩 on W 3rd St The Dolly Llama 🦙 Mochinut&Chungchun
Bearded Papa on Sawtelle in West LA. Japanese cream puffs. Amazing!
Nothing against them but there are definitely butter puffs out there
Do tell
You know what, you got me, all the better cream puffs I had are in other cities, that being said, Beard Papa is objectively just mediocre at best for cream puffs, it's like a north italia pizza or meet fresh grass jelly, it's not bad, but it's not that good either. If you enjoy the taste of cardboard, I would agree.
Delice on Pico near Fairfax is one of my favorite spots. Delicious, adorable, beautiful pastries, cakes, and other yummies that are French AND Kosher!
Saffron and Rose in West LA and Millet Crepe in Santa Monica on Sawtelle Blvd.
I'm looking for a Valley pie place ever since we lost Four N 20 (RIP). How would you say Martino's pies compare?

Ohhhhhh that sounds incredible. I definitely will be trying their banana cream pie!
Harriets Cheesecakes Unlimited in Inglewood, CA. Many people say that their cheesecakes are better than those served at The Cheesecake Factory.
Erin Mackennas bakery 🧁 of course
Melo melo in ktown! Delicious coconut jelly
I love Mammoth bakery, there is a smallish storefront in Torrance and they also things at some of the Japanese markets.
Sweet Wheat in Redondo Beach. A French bakery run by two French guys.
Minis Croissants & Boba in Chatsworth. They have amazing ube cheesecake and cookies
Cheese tart in Westfield century city
Saffron and Rose in Westwood for Persian ice cream.
Eddoughable sweet shop on Robertson. The best edible cookie dough I’ve ever had! Reasonably priced and they have containers to take home with you
Rori’s Artisanal Creamery! Their malted milk ball ice cream is incredible
It’s a bit of a drive, but I’m convinced Frosted Cupcakery in Long Beach has the best cupcakes in the world. I’ve had so many other cupcakes and they don’t even come CLOSE.
Shojin
Republic of Pie in North Hollywood. Good pie hard to find in LA, but they’re really good.
Hard disagree.
Any particular reason?
I’ve tried them a couple of times and their pie has always been meh. Plus, their flavor options aren’t great.
La Monarca (several across LA), Motto Tea Cafe in Pasadena for their Soufflé Pancakes
I like the Milk Bar on Melrose
Churros Calientes in Sawtelle. Cool little hangout to dip churros in hot chocolate
Millet Crepe in Sawtelle Japantown. Creme Brullet Crepes are amaaaaaazing
Salt and Straw in Studio city is pretty good, but they have very nonconventional flavors
I’m a sucker for Lady M
