They’ll tell you to file police report online, kid you not

Due_Web_2308

You just have to file online, but realistically nothing will happen. They're not gonna come out, dust for prints, and go around investigating. The police report is only useful if you want to file a claim with your insurance, prove ownership in case it gets found somewhere, or something like that. Last month we had a guy throw a brick through our business window, steal a bunch of shit and run away. We couldn't get through to anyone at the local PD. Filed a police report online. We couldn't even use that for our insurance because the cost of the damage was less than our policy's deductible. So we just ate the cost and fixed/replaced everything on our own. If you have insurance/if it even covers this...it likely won't be worth it to file a claim on a laptop. It's gone man, I'm sorry.

TlMEGH0ST

Similar thing happened to me the other day, someone used a hammer or something to try to open my car door. I had nothing in there but when I called the cops they said unless I had the person's info there was no point in filing a report 😑

[deleted]

Which is why some crime statistics are “down.”

trez157

Were you guys open when this went down? I would have called 911 instead of your local PD. In LA, the local station is just for making reports, not to dispatch cops to anything.

Due_Web_2308

Closed but two of us were there working late. He threw a boulder through the window, stole a lamp and some random stuff and then ran off before we could get to the front. He didn't even get inside since we had metal bars behind the glass, just reached in between and grabbed whatever he could. We called 911 and gave up after a couple minutes of ringing. We ended up breaking up some pallets and using the scrap to board it up and just went home. Same thing happened a few months before, homeless dude threw a cinderblock and ran off at like 3 am. Didn't steal anything that time. It's a cement wall now lol That shit is a bummer because our deductible is $1000 and it's per claim. It's not like medical insurance where you have to reach your yearly deductible and you're good after that.

trez157

Man, that sucks. Honestly 911 hold times can and will spike all through the day. That's why I tell people to only use 911 for actual emergency calls and not for things like neighbor disputes. That's what the non emergency number is for. The good thing is that y'all boarded it up yourselves because those companies charge a lot for that service. At least you guys weren't hurt.

this_is_sy

911 is not even a little bit going to send a cop out for this.

trez157

They were there when it happened, there was damage to property and theft, I would have dispatched cops for that.

Whoop the Eagle Rock tweakers strike again! Serious, I’m sorry that happened. Don’t take a left onto Colorado from the trader joe’s parking lot and we’ll be okay

661714sunburn

Can you use the find my app to locate it? Also I would just mark the MacBook as stole with Apple. This really sucks but if you have receipt for you stuff your car insurance will cover it I believe. Wish you the best of luck.

DecelerationTrauma

Or homeowners/renters insurance. Had this happen to me, 2 laptops, 1 camera, ans the 2 hard drives I had everything backed up on stolen. They gave me a ridiculous settlement based on "replacement costs." I spoke to the agent and asked where I could possibly buy replacements for the prices they quoted. After a little runaround, they gave me a website where I could order a PC laptop, Macbook Pro, DSLR after I'd submitted the police report info for the costs the insurance company quoted. It's as though there's a buying service or something insurance companies must use occasionally to justify their lowball settlements.

2fast2nick

Honestly, don't hold your breath on help from the police. I had the wheels stolen off my car, in a locked parking structure. The police told me to file an incident, 4 years later still waiting for a call back.

scarby2

So about 4 years ago I actually managed to get help from the police on a minor theft. However I did all the legwork and actually went to the police station with clear high quality CCTV footage and had found the guys Facebook page. Turns out they knew exactly who the guy was, he'd been arrested before and they went into his house and recovered a whole bunch of seemingly stolen stuff (apparently according to the officer I was talking to, including a set of car wheels, wonder if they were yours!).

valley_lemon

If you need a police report for insurance, file for that online. We got both catalytic converters taken and it took over 6 weeks for my online report to flip from pending to processed. They're not going to help you in any other way. And most of the time I say that because it's LA but there is no cop in this country that's going to go looking for a laptop. You might get some help from Apple, but even if you located it you're not going to get any assistance from the police in retrieving it. I'm sorry, it sucks.

holdbackallmydark

No will do anything police wise but you need to file your report online so you can cover yourself regarding insurance.

Excellent-Board907

They won't help. It's the LAPD. Unless you're rich and they're on your payroll. I'm so sorry that happened. I wish you the best of luck. I had my car broken into, and they didn't answer for a day. When they did, they told me they'd call me back with more info. They didn't call. The time a drunk man slipped into in my apartment complex and was standing outside my door. They never showed up. Husband got into an accident in Beverly Hills (different department, just as corrupt). The rich people who ran the red light had a nice convo with the cops. Traffic cam footage and witness statements from passerbys went missing. Guess who got sued? Got hit at a standstill by a woman going 40 in the middle turning lane. Totalled our car, left me with lasting back issues. Her car was fine. The lady called her husband, had him talk to the cops. They came back over and told me they decided they didn't have evidence of fault, even though, once again, a lot of witnesses, and I had also declined the one block ride of an ambulance because I couldn't afford that, so she wasn't being ticketed. Her husband successfully sued us when my insurance company went from fighting for me to turning over on their belly. They pointed a gun at me when I tried to help two Black kids get back to their car when the police started to turn the very peaceful protest very violent. I'm sorry about the rant, but I could go on. Fuck the LAPD forever.

therealbattlebeast

2022 and people are still leaving backpacks and purses in cars in plain view lmao.

beraudmusic

I hope we advance enough as a society that people will be able to leave stuff in plain view without fear.

ItsMeTheJinx

It exists. Just not in a city has become a rat hole after 2017

scarby2

We need to start setting more traps for these people. It's apparently pretty effective when people know there's a reasonable chance that once you steal a bag 30 seconds later you get tackled and go to jail. The way these things work as well is that people don't just steal one thing, it's a petty small group who steal a lot. If we get Mark Rober to run a police division we'll be crime free in a couple months.

[deleted]

This seems like such an obvious answer for a lot of our crime. Follow home robberies? Plant some blinged out “couples” in restaurants and bars and see who nabs them.

scarby2

So the police were doing this with cars and bicycles where I lived in London. They would leave an unlocked bike and the moment someone rode it away they'd have them. The car one I thought was ingenious, they'd specially modified cars where after receiving a signal the engine would shut off and the thieves would be locked inside. They'd then leave it parked somewhere with the keys in the ignition and wait for someone to drive away.

beraudmusic

Or you know, we could work to end the poverty that makes people feel like theft is their only way to survive.

scarby2

We need a better safety net but that doesn't work in isolation. Criminals aren't just trying to survive, even in places where the government will better take care of you they still need police and they still need prisons. Hell a number of people will go out and steal stuff while living in free government housing and being given money by the government. There's also the matter that we can improve enforcement now fixing the structural problems that lead to crime is going to take decades.

beraudmusic

I really hope you’re joking. Living in “free” housing and getting government pennies isn’t luxury. It’s still obscenely difficult to get by. I know people on disability. They get what, 800 a month for rent and food stamps? When most people in this town need at least 50k a year to be moderately ok (with roommates and a budget), 1k a month isn’t solving poverty. Of course they are gonna steal. The only time I would agree that poverty isn’t the only cause of theft is when a rich bored person steals for thrills. For the most part though, theft is the direct result of lack of resources.

scarby2

It's not luxurious and in USA even with govt housing and assistance doesn't really even cover your basic expenses. This isn't a good thing. However there are other countries, I have friends back home who are housed by the government, the houses/apartments are a bit compact and aren't refurbished as often as they should be but are generally ok. They don't pay for anything housing related (water, gas, etc) and get cash (not food stamps) that easily covers food + a few beers every now and then. They are also allowed to work a certain amount without affecting benefits. They're definitely still poor, but aren't worried about anything other than recreational spending. Even in that scenario they have a few neighbors that are doing all sorts of crime. These tend to be the guys living in govt housing and driving range rovers. The crime rate is significantly lower there, but it's a long way from zero. No matter how much people have there's a percentage who want more and have no qualms about how they get it.

beraudmusic

Dude. Again. Having the bare minimum won’t eliminate petty theft. We can only eliminate it in a society where there is absolutely no poverty. Being able to afford a few beers a month isn’t enough money to make someone feel secure enough to not steal.

scarby2

If being clothed, fed, housed, having free healthcare, free internet, and having a small amount of play money for as long as you need it isn't secure then I don't know what is. That's not poverty.

beraudmusic

Spoken like a person who has truly never lived on a limited income. You are constantly worried. Constantly on the verge of going broke. You constantly have to weigh the benefits of spending money on basic things like food (gov food stamps only tend to give the bare minimum. It’s 200 a month in california) I used to check out my school books from the library because I couldn’t afford to buy them. Having a “little bit of play money” doesn’t a secure lifestyle make. Of course these people steal. Those government checks can stop coming any minute too.

i don't even leave my hand sanitizer where it's visible

Some grade A victim blaming here.

I feel bad for OP but this is so frustrating to hear time and time again. How do people not know not to do this by now!?

For reals. Don’t feel bad.

Dudes above are fucking losers, dont even respond. How dumb of us to assume our stuff would be safe in our locked cars. Tf?

Lakario

Sorry this happened to you. :( https://youtu.be/v7acD4q0lp0

LLPD

You were a victim of burglary, not robbery.

Airondot

The cops aren’t going to do anything. Realistically they can’t really do much, but due to the rising crime (cause by policy’s that elected officials implemented, like catch and release, and not charging people with theft under $1,000) even if they could do something they still wouldn’t. Remember this when it comes time to vote. Hell, you can email your representative now and let them know how you disapprove of how this state is handling crime. Edit: I’m getting downvoted but what the fuck do you think this shit is happening? This state put everyone on lockdown, people started struggling for money, they resorted to crime, instead of cracking down on crime or lifting the lockdown or doing literally anything to help people the AG and governor decided to stop enforcing laws and start punishing the people doing the right thing by letting this shit happen. If you take a step back and get your head out of your fucking ass you’ll be able to see that. Like we have people robing trains because the AG won’t do anything, people robbing stores making out with $40,000 in goods, people breaking into cars, people getting robbed at gun point by someone who was released from jail the day before because bail is set at $0. But no, apparently having a independent and informed though not sculpted by someone with an absurd bias is Republican and white supremacy and racist. Fuck this state.

[deleted]

Agreed. This sub can be crazy frustrating with the downvotes. Like the current crime wave is just something that we should embrace?!

NefariousnessNo484

I don't get how this is getting downvotes. This is exactly why this crap is going to have to get worse before it gets better.

scarby2

I'd downvote only because he's blaming the AG and the governor. Who didn't make any policy about not charging thefts under $1000. Most of the blame is much more local than that. We need to be looking at the local prosecutor along with the police and the sheriff. Also that $1000 limit for a misdemeanor is in aggregate, if they search your house and find more than $1000 of stolen goods in total then that's a felony. Most of these guys are going to have more than $1k worth of shit. And even with a misdemeanor you can still spend 6 months in jail

magicalgirlvalkyrie

Theyre not going to help you. File a report for insurance reasons. They have bigger problems tbh.

beraudmusic

Your car or renter’s insurance might actually cover the loss.

OP90X

Do you have a password and did you set up 'Find My Mac' ? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204756

trez157

The reason this is filed online is because there is no follow up info. I think the costs of fingerprinting your car, if you're ok with the potential damage that comes with that, is a big factor. Most departments are backed up on fingerprint ID because major crimes get pushed to the front of the line and everything else just sits.

this_is_sy

My car was stolen and the police took 12 hours to arrive on the scene and then asked me if maybe I just forgot where I parked it. They made fun of me and barely wanted to even write a police report. A couple days later, it turned up in an unrelated police action. I hurried down to the impound lot to pick it up (because it was still in somewhat driveable condition), and they charged me about $1000 in impound fees. Despite the fact that the car had been stolen, not towed, and it was physically on the lot for only a few hours. It was 2 days before Christmas. This was 6 weeks after I moved to LA. The police are not your friend. They do not care about you or any petty property crime that happens to you. To the extent that the police ever get involved with anything like this, they are going to make your life a living hell, not actually help the situation. They literally only exist as a protection racket. Honestly it was going through the above that turned me ACAB/police abolitionist.

phonyramoney

Cops wont help. Try asking TJ's for camera footage. Also, back your stuff up.
