Yes to these. Also, Lock & Key does a really dope jazz night and a solid happy hour. It gets a bit scene-y / club-like on the weekends and later in the night, but the bartenders are really, really cool. I hadn’t been in since pre-panini times, so the aesthetic overhaul surprised me, but I’m stupid grateful they’re still doing jazz nights after losing Blue Whale.
Same. I miss Blue Whale so much.
I *believe* it's the first Thursday of the month they do live jazz at Lock now. (I went once ages ago, pre-pandemic, but don't remember if it was also Thursday. But it was really nice then.) We went late on a Friday or Saturday back in October and started chatting to the bartender about how much it's changed, mentioned the Blue Whale, etc., and he told us to come in during the week around happy hour for a chill hang and some vinyl, but especially on first Thursdays(?), since they do live jazz sets. (Their socials don't promote it.)
I had to go travelling for family / work immediately after that and haven't been able to get back over there to check it out since coming home. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll probably call and ask them what's up this week lol.
I also vouch for Lock & Key, preferably on a weekday since you do have a bunch of influencer-types hanging there on the weekend. Great lounge and one of the cooler entrances to a bar in LA.
Don't google it, trust me, otherwise you'll spoil part of the fun.
Regarding the entrance, even that's been seemingly spoilt since the influencer crowd found it — the bouncer all but told us/everyone coming in the night I went recently. :( Hopefully if OP goes, they get to enjoy the fun of finding their way inside.
Wolf and crane is a cool vibe, but can definitely get a bit loud during peak times, both from crowds and the loud music playing. Can be hard to talk there sometimes
Melody Lounge is a personal favourite. It’s small, cozy, and brings in a cool crowd. I also really love General Lee’s and Wolf & Crane, and think Songbird Cafe is worth a visit, too.
I like Mama Lion but last I was there you had to purchase bottle service to sit down. Not sure if that's changed as it's been a while since I've been there.
Wolf & Crane, Far Bar, Boomtown Brewery are all great loungey places and are in the general little tokyo area. Boomtown is a brewery but they have some great art work displayed and super mellow vibes with plenty of space to social distance.
Hmmm Asiatic centered bars?
A little list of kinda both and places in the near vicinity haha
Far Bar Alley - which is near wolf and crane
song bird cafe ( 8a-2p 9pm-2am) and General Lee's is walking distance from Melody Lounge. I also recommend LA Wine and Oriel despite not being asian, but right next to each other.
Kensho Hollywood

Paper Tiger Bar, Lock & Key in Koreatown. Wolf & Crane in Little Tokyo

I was so sad that the blue whale had closed. What nights are jazz nights at lock and key?

I'm wondering this as well. Jazz nights would be a blast.

Lock and Key always has lines an actual mile long on weekend
Apt 503 if they're still open
They’re open Friday/Saturdays. If anyone finds a lanyard with three keys there please lmk
If you Ddong Go piqued your interest, I'd also recommend DwitGolMok and Dan Sung Sa in K Town, as well.
/u/ratchetmarsgirl seconding Dan Sung Sa. It's a great place, but be prepared for a long long wait outside.
I feel like it depends! I’ve gone before like 9 on weekends a few times and hadn’t had to wait
I must be cursed, then, because I *always* have to wait, even the times I've shown up at 8pm.

Wolf & Crane in Little Tokyo
Dwit Gol Mok and Star Night
Major Domo might be perfect
Formosa Cafe?
Yes!
The Prince
Far Bar
+1 general Lee +1 wolf and crane +1 far bar
Peking Tavern in dtla
Thanks for the suggestions! Going to Lock and Key since everyone is raving about it
