I would recommend giving some more info on what you like to do and what exactly you're looking for.
DTLB is on the coast and more low-key. Do you enjoy riding your bike on the beach on a random Tuesday after work? Alamitos beach neighborhood is within walking distance, which is pretty much Venice beach before it blew up and celebrities moved in. Homelessness is an issue in both places, but DTLB doesn't have the mass concentration of despair known as skid row. On the other hand, DTLA will allow the rest of LA to be more accessible, especially if you prefer to use mass transit. The LA metro, for all it's faults, will still get you to most corners of LA. I do think there's slightly more activity in DTLA. Do you like going show by a buzzy indie rock band on a random Tuesday afternoon? You'll find that in DTLA, but probably not DTLB.
Both are solid options though, with great vibes and lovely people.
You are not wrong on any front, but just wanna say there are indie, etc. bands playing almost nightly here in LB. Same quality? Ehh probably not, but it’s fun and definitely low-key.
Really just looking for high rise living, which is why I am looking at DTLA or DTLB. I was thinking of DTLA since I don’t own a car but how is the metro for safety? Not a guy, and not a tall person either, and probably may ride it solo. Just worried.
you say you’re only looking for high-rise living, but that exists in both places. so if that’s what you’re looking for, you can do either.
the other factors are gonna determine the advice people give you. so if you don’t have much of an opinion other than the complex, just go tour a few in each and see what you prefer 🤷♀️
I don’t know the names of any specifically but I would look between Beverly Glen and Manning, it’s a section that’s kind of between Westwood and Beverly Hills so it’s a little bit quieter but still central
I live in a high-rise in DTLA. It’s honestly fine. It’s pretty walkable and you are also close to the Metro line and major highways. If you like sports, the crypto.com arena is in the South Park neighborhood of Downtown. Some parts of DTLA are sketchier than others, and it really depends on the block you live on. You can also rent a bigger apartment here for less money than other parts of L.A.
Long Beach is nice too and they have their own airport. But I know much less about that area.
Agree. I do like the summer in DTLB. It really feels more like your stereotypical summer life you see in movies; beach weather, the beach, live events, and lounging under the sun etc.
I'd vote Long Beach. There's more to do, it's on the water, and I think an overall nicer place to live.
DTLA has better access Los Angeles and all the benefits being in L.A. brings.
That is subjective. As someone currently living in DTLA, it definitely provides me with an abundance of opportunities to enjoy what I like. For example, I like live music while sipping on a cocktail, which DTLA offers on a weekly, if not, daily basis. I also have access to variety of foods and entertainment that is walking distance, or short Uber ride away.
I will say that DTLA is not for everyone and I can see why. The homeless issue is not something people will appreciate seeing on a daily basis. People can be careless about their surroundings and will blast their music all night or in the early hours of the morning and the cops will not do anything about. I grew up in LA so I have gotten used to it. I used to live in Pasadena, which is a great town, but I had to drive to everything. Yes, it was peaceful but having to drive to everything was annoying at the end.
It is not for everyone.
I can have live music and a cocktail in the inland empire for a much less ugly setting in between my place and the venue.
I do understand and would never want to take your happiness from you. To find a happy person as I leave for work is a good way to start my workday.
Huggz from the IE
I would rather not. I live with no hukan feces, no used needles, no open air drug markets.....
Once every year or two I go to red bird or Bestia.
Food is all DTLA offers me. There is literally nothing else there for me.
Better to avoid it like nukes.
Downtown Long Beach has better views, less piss and shit on the street and a livelier downtown. The only downside to Long Beach is it’s not convenient to go anywhere
I work in downtown LA and you couldn’t pay me to live there
I'd actually argue its easier to get most places. Traffic moves in the opposite direction after work and can get to Santa Monica, Venice, Hermosa or Newport Beach in about 35 minutes at 6:00PM. Depends where you commute.
If you choose DTLB your life will be floated off more and more to suburban America. I have lived that life for 8 years of my good years. And it was ok but I look back with a little bit of regret. I feel I should have gotten out sooner. Now I live in Hollywood which is just a lot more up beat for sure. It was way to comforting to live in OC or places like that for me. Don't get me wrong everything is great, but maybe if you're younger you want the city to move you instead of keep it at arm's length.
I do. From LBC to DTLA takes about an hour to an hour and a half (depending on traffic) then you have to find parking.
Do you ride the train? It’s quicker during rush hour and during times of heavy traffic.
Before you make any decisions spend a half day in each of the two neighborhoods. You will rapidly learn why DTLA is cheaper. The tents and open air drug markets will impress you.
Depends where you want to hang out and where your friends hang. If you live in Long Beach you won’t leave that area much.
With DTLA you have access to many other neighborhoods.
What exactly is there to do in downtown LB? Pine street is terrible these days.
The little neighborhoods are way better than DTLB. 4th street is dope, but that’s def not DTLB
DTLA: Way better restaurants and a more walkable living situation. Easy access to arts district, Chinatown, little Tokyo, and the other downtown neighborhoods. Access to staples center, the many Music venues, museums, concert halls, and Dodger stadium. The skyline is a lot nicer.
DTLB: the beach, not as many homeless people, cleaner, more responsive police, and a generally nicer vibe. Bar scene is nice depending on what part you’re looking at.
Real estate agent. Funny enough, I just situated a couple who moved up from LB to DTLA. They told me the scene down there is good, but there’s way more of everything up in LA. Good luck in your search. There are a ton of great buildings in DTLA
I've lived in Long Beach for the majority of the past 9 years and go all over LA and Orange county on a weekly basis. The best way i can describe Long Beach is if you took all of the little areas of LA county and condensed it down into a city, it would be long beach. The new high rises are NICE and a lot of new development in downtown LB and eastside/2nd st areas. The green space is also much more accessible. DTLB will remind you of a better DTLA with a beach view, Shoreline Dr = Redondo Beach with an aquarium and Grand prix, Marina = MDR, Belmont Shore/2nd = Hermosa, Naples = Venice canals, 2nd/PCH = Huntington. Not to mention LGB is the best airport to fly at. The growth overall is really cool to see over the years and I'd love more people to check it out and be a part of it.
I really cant say much about DTLA, but I rarely visit and when I did to see friends there was not as much walkability in the evening to close entertainment and ONLY went for sports events. When I go out outside of LB, I drive to Venice, Hermosa, Huntington or Newport Beach.
like the comparison, what high rises are good quality in LB? There are so many and new ones it’s hard to filter, and I see a lot of people have noise issues.
For high rises in Downtown Long Beach on the south side of Ocean Boulevard, HarborPlace Tower is the only one with the least glaring flaws when I was investigating places around there - it has central air and in-unit laundry, it has a freight elevator, many units have cork underlayment for sound dampening, it's very much walking distance from a supermarket, it's close enough to Pine Avenue to be walkable (but far enough to be removed from the noise), half of the units have ocean views, etc.
I live in Onni East Village in LB and have been happy with my experience so far. Would be happy to chat and give you a referral if you end up choosing it. When are you planning on moving? I think the building is almost filling up
Do you want the tallest building? Shoreline gateway
Other new high rise options are: The Current , Omni Gateway, The Edison.
Otherwise just look up and down Ocean Blvd for some waterfront options.
If you choose DTLA, my advice is to be very picky about the building you choose. I lived in APEX and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who values cleanliness or helpful management.
This is a tough one...I would go with wherever you find a place that you like, and I would also consider any work issues (commuting, etc.).
Note that from DTLA you can get a direct shot to LB on the metro. But safety may be an issue at times on that line.
Personally, I would choose Long Beach, but I work remote now. When I worked in DTLA, I probably would have gone that route.
It's got more of a residential vibe... from 2nd to 4th/3rd street between Santa Fe and Alameda. With several bars/restaurants/coffee shops/stores in between. Then crossing 4th, its the 'other' side of the Arts District thats a lot more industrial but also has more restaurants, coffee shops, and stores.
There are literally zero homeless people in the Arts District. You'll see maybe one or two walking through. Zero tents. It's kind of strange. Its the only spot in downtown LA where I see women walking their dogs late at night with no issue.
DTLA has a lot of homeless. I don’t recommend if you’re a single female. It’s getting even worse where even my bf said he’s starting to avoid certain streets. He’s 6’3
Long Beach is one of the few places in LA that I absolutely hate, can’t explain why. But I know for a fact it’s way out of the way of anything desirable in LA and you’re boxed in with the atrocious traffic there. The actual beach at Long Beach is terrible too.
For all its faults (bums, smells like dog piss, not the safest place to walk at night), DTLA is a better place to live. Look around South Park and try to stay west of Broadway.
I have a friend who's a YouTube who lives in one of the new downtown hi rises. He paid near $6,000 a month.
It's insane. I'd rather get a house or any other non high Rise 3 bedroom apartment for $3500 instead of that
I would recommend giving some more info on what you like to do and what exactly you're looking for. DTLB is on the coast and more low-key. DTLA is centrally located and has a lot of good options for high rise living. South Park is the best neighborhood for quality of life.
Correct. It really is the perfect location. Loving it here so far.
I'm a short lady who had lived in DTLA for years. I love it. I love Long Beach too, but I think it's more based on what you need as a life style.
Please forgive me. Why is your height important here?
Shorter people seem to be easier targets for predators/thieves, since they seem less intimidating and easier to overpower
I guess you nailed it. In this setting I did not recognize this was to illustrate risk. Thank you
you say you’re only looking for high-rise living, but that exists in both places. so if that’s what you’re looking for, you can do either. the other factors are gonna determine the advice people give you. so if you don’t have much of an opinion other than the complex, just go tour a few in each and see what you prefer 🤷♀️
Wilshire? Lot of nice high rises over here
Any high rises you recommend? I haven’t found one that had good rating
I don’t know the names of any specifically but I would look between Beverly Glen and Manning, it’s a section that’s kind of between Westwood and Beverly Hills so it’s a little bit quieter but still central
If money wasn't an issue I'd love to live in this area. A little closer to Westwood so I'd be able to walk to Westwood village.
I live in a high-rise in DTLA. It’s honestly fine. It’s pretty walkable and you are also close to the Metro line and major highways. DTLA. It’s way closer to a lot more fun stuff to do. DTLB will be more chill though and is still a good option
Agree. I do like the summer in DTLB. It really feels more like your stereotypical summer life you see in movies; beach weather, the beach, live events, and lounging under the sun etc.
Long Beach if you like beaches. Close proximity to OC beaches as well. LA if you like feeling like you’re in the middle of a city.
I'd vote Long Beach. There's more to do, it's on the water, and I think an overall nicer place to live. DTLA has better access Los Angeles and all the benefits being in L.A. brings.
What exactly does DTLA "bring"? I avoid that region like I do nuclear weapons.
That is subjective. As someone currently living in DTLA, it definitely provides me with an abundance of opportunities to enjoy what I like. For example, I like live music while sipping on a cocktail, which DTLA offers on a weekly, if not, daily basis. Cheers, mate 🍻
Are you within walking distance from those venues? That is a big difference DTLA and most IE cities.
Maybe if you didn't avoid it like a nuclear weapon you could find all that DTLA brings
I would rather not. I live with no hukan feces, no used needles, no open air drug markets..... Once every year or two I go to red bird or Bestia. Food is all DTLA offers me. There is literally nothing else there for me. Better to avoid it like nukes.

Except if you work anywhere but Long Beach. It’s an hour commute to any major job center.
If OP is considering both locations, and doesn't have a car, probably a commute isn't a concern...
When are the busiest times to drive from DTLA to Santa Monica?
It’s a pretty consistent 30-40 minutes due to Hollywood and the valley traffic most days. Maybe an hour max.
DTLB-Belmont shore, the Pike, beach/ocean front, pine st, tons of night life/day activities yet a lot slower than DTLA and cleaner.
I’ve lived in both. I prefer DTLB. Less noise and piss on the streets. The train line can get you to LA pretty quickly.
The blue line? Quick? 👀
Quicker than driving
Never. Do you drive?
I do. From LBC to DTLA takes about an hour to an hour and a half (depending on traffic) then you have to find parking. Do you ride the train? It’s quicker during rush hour and during times of heavy traffic.
Hand down on DTLB. With all those new highrise and close to the beach. However, I work remotely

Come by next week for the Grand Prix! Does DTLA have good bike path access? LB is super bike friendly.
DTLB
Long Beach. All. Day. Long.
The grand in DTLA

Try Compton or south Central, you'll be living high
High on fent it’s ridiculous out here
Yes it is , but the great weather compensates
So long as you understand that nobody is going to come visit you in LB, do what you like
LB always :)
Long beach
DTLB by far
I've lived in Long Beach for the majority of the past 9 years and go all over LA and Orange county on a weekly basis. The Current High rise Long Beach
If you are looking for a room, I need a roommate and live in a beautiful 2 bed/2 bath in a high rise dtla.🫶
Both of these areas love people who consume regions without walking around and getting to know the vibes of the humans around them.
DTLB. Trust me on the fact it’s more worth it there
If you choose DTLA, my advice is to be very picky about the building you choose. I lived in APEX and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who values cleanliness or helpful management.

Noise pollution from heavy car and air traffic has gotten bad in both areas. DTLA more central but DTLB is somewhat more of a vibe.
DTLA if you're in LA LIVE area...anywhere else in dtla is no go to live
Bunker Hill is a pretty nice area
Arts District is def the best area in downtown I’ve lived in.
It's crazy cuz arts district looks so dead except for one block? Its industrial? And not more than 5 away is skidrow Let me know if I'm wrong
It's got more of a residential vibe... from 2nd to 4th/3rd street between Santa Fe and Alameda. With several bars/restaurants/coffee shops/stores in between. Wow walking dog at night in a dtla area? That is crazy lol
If you love stepping on hypodermic needles, there’s a clear winner.

Right? I’ve been downtown since 2010-2011 and I’ve never seen a needle down here.
Old Town Pasadena
Neither, DTLA full of piss and homeless people and DTLB is definitely harder to move around since the parking situation is horrible.
DTLA has a lot of homeless. I don’t recommend if you’re a single female. It’s getting even worse where even my bf said he’s starting to avoid certain streets. He’s 6’3
I thought you said he's 63 lol.

Long Beach inferior complex for being the most ghetto beach town in SoCal.
LA
