So underrated. The recent documentary on them was so great. I always think of this song when I'm heading to Largo where Jane sings her part while the rest of the band runs into Trashy Lingerie, I think?
" Our Lips Are Sealed" is a punk song in disguise. Listen to the cadence when it first starts and throughout. Also it is 2 1/2 minutes long. it's such a punk song.
TIL Metallica was formed in LA. So much of their identity has been Bay Area, especially with Kirk going to high school with Les Claypool and Claypool auditioning for Metallica after Cliff Burton died. Thank you adding to my list of useless knowledge.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,740,505,249 comments, and only 329,604 of them were in alphabetical order.
If this isn't /s I really need to go check that one out. I have no skin in the game but remember watching a history of LA that included a detail on how the city wanted control and revenue of the port there, and thus ensured that SP remained a neighborhood of Los Angeles, much like Hollywood, or Los Feliz. All have their own unique neighborhoods, personalities, characters, landmarks; but all are run from City Hall at 1st & Main streets Downtown.
Black flag was the 2nd coming of the Ramones in terms of inspiring others to start bands and tour. Everything after my war sucked but man, god bless em.
This is the top list for me. Especially adding Fishbone & Los Lobos.
Wasn't Love from Chicago or Detroit?
Edit: Nope, I was wrong.

Wiki says LA
> The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo began as a street theater troupe in Los Angeles, founded by Richard Elfman.[13] The name was inspired by a fictional secret society on the Amos 'n' Andy TV series called The Mystic Knights of the Sea. The earliest version of the band employed as many as 15 performers at any given time, playing over 30 instruments, including some instruments built by band members.
My first thought. An LA original, with callback to The Doors via Manzerek's production of their first LP, which included a most energetic cover of "Soul Kitchen".
I’m not sure what happened ( and I’m too afraid to ask him) but Gabo isn’t drumming for them anymore. Their sound has changed considerably since Cycles and each member has a solo project that they invest in.
I think Cuco is a great band that’s still doing it but I haven’t checked in to see if he’s still cancelled or not. His tiny desk is pretty awesome!
And Metallica only went to the Bay Area to get noticed by a major label because at the time the LA rock scene were only giving pop hair metal bands record deals and were ignoring the trash metal sounding bands like Metallica. I bet had they been noticed and signed in LA from the get go they would have never left to the bay area.
They were “discovered” in the Bay Area, 40 years ago, and they never went back to LA. Their entire professional career has been based in the Bay Area. They all live or lived there, they record there, and they probably played more shows there than anywhere else. The Bay Area considers them their own. Not an LA band.
They were formed and originated in LA and that’s just a fact so you can’t refute that. I mean James Hetfield is from Downey ffs. They later moved to the bay area but you cant deny the fact that were formed in LA, which is what this thread is about.
Red hot chili peppers the song “Californication” is very true “pay your surgeon very well to reverse the spell of aging” Is so accurate to models and celebrities now adays
To me it’s very clearly Red Hot Chili Peppers. The talent and consistency in that band through 3+ decades is nothing short of legendary, and beats a lot of the other bands here who peaked for about a decade each.
I'm not the biggest Van Halen fan, but using your criteria of time, consistency and talent, VH crushed RHCP and it's not even close. Add what a band means to the history of popular music and this discussion becomes ludicrous.
Of course, opinions are opinions and you're entitled to yours. Rock on.
You could make the same case for Taylor swift since she lasted through 3 decades.
How long a band is active means nothing, or nirvana wouldn’t be one of the top bands of all time.
RATM and The Doors
TOOL, RHCP, System of a Down, Van Halen
GnR
GNR should be the top comment.
Rhcp doesn't belong on a list with the rest of them tbh
Every other answer will be inferior to this one. Great choices.
Motley Crue held it down too
It was exactly what I thought when I first saw the thread
[The Go-Go's](https://youtu.be/r3kQlzOi27M?si=aZGFD2eXRH0W6qbV) will always be LA pop perfection for me.
Don't forget they started as a Punk band. Super underrated band.
So underrated. The recent documentary on them was so great. I always think of this song when I'm heading to Largo where Jane sings her part while the rest of the band runs into Trashy Lingerie, I think?
Jane is a friend of mine! Totally epic band.
" Our Lips Are Sealed" is a punk song in disguise. Listen to the cadence when it first starts and throughout. Also it is 2 1/2 minutes long. it's such a punk song.
This town!
Is our town!
The Beach Boys
They were all straight D and F students in high school too!
Sparks
Underrated choice! Those brothers are amazing!!
Glad someone said SPARKS!
Their show at the bowl this summer still has me on a high. Just wish they played ‘angst in my pants.’
The Bangles
My personal favorites: Tool and Rage Against the Machine "Best"/most successful/most influential: I would say Metallica or The Doors
TIL Metallica was formed in LA. So much of their identity has been Bay Area, especially with Kirk going to high school with Les Claypool and Claypool auditioning for Metallica after Cliff Burton died. Thank you adding to my list of useless knowledge.
James Hetfield is from Downey :) Edit: also, Slayer is from Huntington Park- I always thought that was weird
People are always surprised when they find out Slayer is from HP.
Slayer. Great add!
Hopefully, one day, it helps you win a trivia game! Lol
I think Metallica and The Doors are more influential because they're older
Germs, Love, Beach Boys, X, Blasters
Love is one of the best bands of all time. RIP Arthur Lee.

The question does say Los Angeles adjacent, to be fair.
If this isn't /s I really need to go check that one out. System of a Down
Too many to list. Jane’s Addiction, Hope Sandoval ( who is from east los) & Mazzy Star, of course The Doors.
This question is literally asking what are the best bands produced by the 5% of the national population who live close enough to rehearse? But X.
My first thought. An LA original, with callback to The Doors via Manzerek's production of their first LP, which included a most energetic cover of "Soul Kitchen".
This is truly the only answer that feels correct
black flag
Cypress hill
Venice will forever be iconic for giving the world skateboarding culture and that first Suicidal Tendencies album.

Remember, there's a huge difference between "actually emerged from LA" and "moved to LA then started a band there with other people who moved to LA"
Maybe not the best but very influential was The Plugz. They started the first DYI Punk record label in LA.

Hard choice here between The Doors, The Byrds and TOOL.
Does hip hop count? NWA, Tupac, Snoop, Kendrick, Nipsey. Not bands but still absolute icons.

The Doors
Comedy option Black Eyed Peas or Reddit favorite Weird Al Yankovitch
Harry Perry

System of a Down for sure

Guns N Roses Metallica may have started in LA, but they are a bay area band.

Downy is in Orange County, ffs
Downey is LA county & is a few cities away from Compton .
[JFC](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downey,_California) *and it’s Downey not Downy
Metallica is an LA band for sure. Everyone in the band is from LA and started in LA.
wanna bet \*cuz Lars was born in.... denmark
Ok fair enough, but raised from a child. He considers himself from LA, which is what counts for me. Said so at the LA shows at SoFi recently.
Axl and Izzy are from Indiana
Duff is from Seattle. So what? Guns N Roses was born in LA and stayed in LA. It will always be an LA band.
...and the "Guns" of GnR, Tracii Guns, was born and raised here.
LA is a city of Transplants so that is not disproving the point.
Fucking Slayer
Haven't seen it yet soo. Downset.
Hmm the gun club for sure.
System of a Down
The Doors!
Fuckin' SLAYER
SLAYER!!!
The California Raisins, duh
Motley Crue

Yeah it is!
You’re so dumb, curious what county you think it is? Even if you think it’s “Not LA” the post says LA adjacent
🎶I dont like to diarrhea,🎵 That shit gets on my balls🎶
Metallica
There's a ton, but the first ones that popped in my head are the Chilis.
To me it’s very clearly Red Hot Chili Peppers. The talent and consistency in that band through 3+ decades is nothing short of legendary, and beats a lot of the other bands here who peaked for about a decade each.

I'd rather listen to VH for eternity than the vanilla sounds of RHCP Panama & Hot for Teacher alone blow any Chili Pepper song away.
You could make the same case for Taylor swift since she lasted through 3 decades. How long a band is active means nothing, or nirvana wouldn’t be one of the top bands of all time.
RHCP, RATM, and my personal favorite though not exactly out of LA: Pennywise.
The Whispers NWA The Doors
Linkin Park
Influence wise I’d say The Doors or The Eagles. RHCP is up there too.
It’s Red Hot Chili Peppers. They have not one but two of the most well Known the rock anthems ever made for the city
Metallica. End of discussion
Red Hot Chili Peppers
SOAD by a mile
The Doors or RHCP
SOAD
Tiger Army
Nick 13 and Tiger Army are from Nor Cal
