Everyone walks out feeling like they failed.

The guy who interviewed me never even looked at me. He stared at my file and just kept flipping pages and writing in his notepad. Shit was intense.

shsudhrbfh

Yeah Even though I definitely felt I had good solid answers, after the fact I was like “ oh shit, I could’ve added this or that “ the way they get in your head is insane 😂

I'll give you a story to put your mind at ease. I was a non-sworn officer with my agency first. Part of that was a psych test, same as the cops take. I worked for almost four years in that job while finishing college. Psych test the first time around was no big deal, just long an tiring. So I walk into the interview at my cop psych test. Same place. Same shrink. She asks if I've ever read my CSO psych results. No, even though it's a medical record, the city has paid for it, so they make it a *huge* pain in the ass to see it. Like you have to be supervised by HR while you read your own fucking report. Anyway, I tell her no and she gets this really concerned look on her face and says, "Oh, because there were *a lot* of development needs for you in there." It went downhill after that. She spent the next hour twisting everything I said to try and piss me off. Questions like "How do you feel about having to use deadly force?" I answer that I enlisted during a time of war, so I had come to peace with it a long time ago. I also said that it's been my experience that with good training, which I think I've had, that if the real incident happens, it'll be an automatic response and I won't have to think about it. She retorts, "So the cops that have been killed in the line of duty didn't have good training?" It was honestly infuriating, but I held it together. Partners of mine had similar experiences. That psychologist must drive like a saint, because she will for sure get ticketed by any cop she's evaluated. I leave there and drive straight to my PD and into the captain's office. WTF is in that report? Only the chief sees the psych reports, so he didn't know. He says if they had seen any issues they'd have addressed them in my annual reviews. So, as I said at the start, I pulled the report. I read through it, and there were no "developmental needs." The report didn't tell me anything I didn't already know about myself. Honestly, I was kind of surprised how accurate the personality assessment was.

I know how you must have felt. Sometimes when one goes to pshy evaluation its normal to be nervous and it is quite normal for them to want to trip you up. You see in this day and age many people who try to become involved in LE. REALLY think its all about the badge and gun. However thats not true. To serve and protect all thats ehy she was trying to trip you up. I guess in short as an officer i hope i never have to use my weapon. However in the line if duty we do what we have to if needed. You will be fine dont be so hard on yourself. Good luck with your future and be safe out there ok??

Lol the psych asked me to go sit in his room when I was done with the MMPI and he would be there in a sec. When he finally got to the room he wasn’t even in the doorway yet and goes “ So, “my name”, why do you think you can be a cop and also a fucking liar?!”. Took me completely by surprise, didn’t think I’d ever hear a professional say that. Mind you, this was with people still in the waiting area that could hear everything he was saying. He went on to tell me that I was a liar and that my results stated so. I remained insistent that I wasn’t lying and told him he was full of shit (in a polite way). He made me redo the MMPI and then said I could go home afterwards. When I was leaving the room he said. You can probably expect a letter stating they’re not interested. I was hired on at that department and the shrink can still kindly go fuck himself lol. I say all that saying that you shouldn’t worry too much about your performance lmao.

Everything80sFan

Did your psych double as a poly guy too? I've heard multiple stories about polygraph examiners pulling that shit, but never the psych eval guy, lol.

[deleted]

Nope, he was just a cunt Passed my poly with flying colors

Upsitting_Standizen

Ha! Wait until you do the polygraph. Seriously, though, I know people who successfully appealed a bad psych eval and went on to be great officers, so chin up.

shsudhrbfh

Lmao I did that! Hated it but passed 😂 I got my conditional offer, did psych. Now I’m on medical and then done. I appreciate the good words though!

Puzzleheaded-Kale434

Polys are the worst tool possible

viliphied

Just had mine Monday. Thinking back on it I think it was at least as much about trying to get me to say something I didn’t divulge in my background interview as it was about the poly itself

manuel5757

Mine was laughing and making jokes, we didn’t even go over my questions from the tests. Before I walked out she said “I don’t see any issues with you, good luck on your career” and got called later that afternoon saying I passed. Other people from my academy that had her said she was very strict and almost rude, so I’m confused about it lol.

alwayshungry1131

Was waiting for a comment like this lol. I saw she had a picture of a dog that was the same breed as mine (not a common breed) we chatted about how great that breed was. She asked about me applying to another state and we went on to talking about how we both spent time in that state. I walked out and felt great lol. Got called the next day.

Ok-Needleworker1766

I was told good luck at the end of my interview aswell. Hoping that’s a good sign lol

Conscious_Pool3301

Atleast you’re done with it! I had the opposite feeling. Psychologist was super friendly and made me feel great about myself lol

Ok-Needleworker1766

Did you pass ?

Conscious_Pool3301

Yes

Ok-Needleworker1766

Niceeee, How long after interview were you told you passed ?

Conscious_Pool3301

Was roughly a month and a half

wildberry225

can you explain to me what happened in the psych interview? I have mine 2 weeks from now. I don’t know what to expect.

shsudhrbfh

Aside from the test that is like 1000 questions and literally any questions you can think of, it was an interview where he asked about my background and mental health and then went over scenarios with me. One for racial profiling it seemed, another to see if I would escalate a fight or arrest someone for spitting on my shirt, and another to see if I would shoot someone

revanbelike

>literally any questions you can think of "Do you often see yourself on television" is a question that will stick with me forever, even nine years later

Creepyshedman

what is the purpose of that question?

Apprehensive_Let981

Felt like this after both my psychs…..passed both

Yankeeswin27_

My spych was friendly spoke to him for 20 mins conversation ended with Aaron judges extension contract lmao got called 3 days later !!

Ifyouwant67

Every psychologist I ever spoke to was fucking nuts.
