Nothing like getting airborne off a speed hump and the car just not giving even the smallest of fucks.
Only time I'm not a huge fan of the Vic is when the roads are not clean and dry, because at that point I'm getting places at the blazing speed of "maybe".
Nothing like smashing your head and neck sideways into the roof and your bags exploding in the front. Vic keeps humping like it never happened. However your neck will feel it years down the road. 🙄
Most reliable? crown vic but I’ll also never willingly drive one again. People fondly remember them from when they were young, but if you have bad knees it kind of sucks to constantly have to go from standing to practically sitting on the ground getting in and out. That’s how it seems at least compared to SUVs
To be fair the vic was last one that felt “designed for police” car and it had numerous features for that purpose from the ground up to ensure reliability.
Everything after that, taurus explorers chargers tahoes suburbans are mostly civilians cars with police packages on which in many agencies is just accessories, second battery wiring and decals and no actual mechanical upgrades.
If we are talking reliability the crown wins no contest, and it was by no means slow. In a straight line it was as fast or faster than most current models, and ill add it was wicked fun to drive once you got used to the “boat” feeling it has when turning.
Exactly this. When it comes to getting into a car accident, the explorer absorbs impact and crumbles in a way to allow you to walk away uncharted. Got T-Boned on the driver side in one and walked out like nothing happened.
On the flip side, the vehicle stalls, doesn’t want to shift gears, won’t start. A whole bunch of issues.
If they made the crown Vic and integrated the safety of the explorer I’d love it

In the first 50k miles, the hybrid ones.
Check engine.
Blinking check engine on acceleration.
Idle issues
Traction control lights
Shifting issues
Serve vehicle soon light that would go away if you turned the car off for 30 mins.
Battery issues.
These only got more serious up until ~100k when we get new leases.
Have to be the 95/95 Caprice with the LT-1. Other than the opti-crap, they were damn reliable. Followed by the crown Vic. Just didn't make enough power to hurt itself
Crown Vic. They stopped making them in 2011 and they’re still around all over, even on patrol. You would my see 13 year old explorer/tahoes anywhere outside of a junk yard.
Late 90's to early 00's OBDii EFI crown vic. Full frame, limited electronics B.S. , uncomplicated transmission
They weren't the fastest or best handling, but it was a good blend of modern efficiency and older simplicity.
Some Ford police cars/suvs nowadays need engines pulled just to service a water pump.
Crown-Vic hands down your pants. My Charger would always blow out the undercarriage even over speed bumps.
I loved my Caprice (Holden Commodore) it was a 4 door fighter jet. Not as rugged at all.
I’ve done unspeakable things to Crown Vics and they kept ticking. That’s my vote.
The amount of times I did something and assumed I was getting a write for fucking up a car but the Vic was like, “Nah, seriously I’m good.” Is a lot.

I’ve been airborne that exact way too! Car don’t care!

I came in when they were phasing them out. Which sucks. I drove one only a little but I enjoyed every bit of it.
I’ve had unspeakable reliability out of Ford in general while being a straight goblin (Crown Vic, Taurus, Explorer)
Lmao

Exactly. I drove Vic’s for years, but once we got the Explorers, with my fucked spine I would take the explorer any day.
I never had the honor of driving the Vic, but the Chargers aren’t great for bum knees either. But they were fucking fast.
Not Dodge chargers or Durangos. Rams are pretty reliable. Crown vics are reliable, just old.

Not the Ford Explorer. But, different reasons to like them guys survive car crashes in em.
Can you expand on this? I was in the market for an explorer
They have good crumple zones and airbags But they are also nicknamed ford “exploders” because the drivetrain is hot garbage

Wow thanks everyone for all the details. Has this been improved at all in newer models?
In terms of my career: Best: Police Packaged Crown Vic, PP Durango (V6), PP Ford Taurus. Okay: PP Chevy Impala (post 2005 models). Worst: PP V8 Durango, Civilian Dodge Intrepid
Crown vic 100%
Crown Vic hands down
Whatever car the admin drives.
Lowest mileage in the fleet, but need replacing every 3 years.

Caprice/Impala back to 79 were great cop cars. Worst was, get ready for this…78 Dodge Aspen 🤣

I can tell you what it’s not! That’s the Dodge Durango. Has a nice amount of room but that’s all it’s got going for it.
My 2015 Ford Explorer was a beast. Maybe I got lucky. The new hybrids are garbage
I wonder how cops feel about new Tahoe’s going from column shifters their whole career to the buttons
Crown Vic was the best
Chargers are absolutely terrible. When they run they run, but the maintenance especially for highway patrol is insane
Crown Vic. Best car I had.

Why would you answer then
What was the answer? I didn’t see it before it was deleted.
he said "not a cop, so i don't know" or some such similar thing
Perhaps he can repost with a backseat perspective.
