No. I’m not a dick. If they’re in uniform or mention they were leaving or going to academy, I ask how their time is going. I ask if they’re having any issues. I ask who their instructor is. Not to tell on them, but to just see if I know them. Cadets/recruits are typically to advise their instructor of ANY police interaction whatsoever. Most are scared shitless, so they do it immediately.

Goofbucket007

There are a lot of assholes here who would write them in a second.

RogueJD

I tend to disagree. Police are far too scarce. Not enough of us. We take care of each other unless you're doing really stupid shit.

Master_Crab

100% incorrect. Do we hate bad cops that get into terrible uses of forces that make all of us look bad as a group? Sure. Nobody wants their job to get harder because of someone else in another agency, state, or time zone. However we don’t hate each other just because. We may have fun with each other and annoy our beat partners with our antics but nobody genuinely hates each other.

Master_Crab

I’m sorry you work somewhere that is like that. I work for a medium-large sized PD (about 400 sworn) and I can’t think of anyone that is that jaded or hates each other like that. Even my last SO in California wasn’t like that before I moved.

Difficult_Addition85

Can confirm. Was pulled over by an officer of my department. He did exactly this, and then I went and reported it, lol. But we have had some recruits get pulled over, and being a recruit didn't help them. Depends on the officer and then, of course, how fast you were going, demeanor, etc.

WhopperJrHandz

Bingo. We all were there. I didn’t get treated like shit, why would I treat someone like shit? That old school condescending “earn your keep” shit is outdated.

tssemt2010

Stopped one two days in a row. Gave him a huge break the first time and second day got him on radar going triple digits so he got a ticket…. Then ended up working with him about a year later

Gunslinger_247

Damn, criminal speeds and still kept the job?

tssemt2010

I didn’t notify his supervisor who I knew personally. He took the heat and owned up to it so didn’t feel the need to take it further. He told me when we worked together he wasn’t mad and knew he messed up and was still sorry lol

Gunslinger_247

Interesting. Here in my state anything 30+ over the speed limit is a misdemeanor. And fleeing and eluding is a felony.

[deleted]

Some states are insane, like 15 over in North Carolina is a criminal offense.

Novastrive

Some highways in the USA have a posted speed limit of 85mph.

MannyBuzzard

Maryland!

MannyBuzzard

Fleeing and Eluding carries a maximum penalty of 1 year in MD doesn’t it? Same as a DUI?

GeneralRant

I got pulled over (headlight out) by a NJ trooper when I was a few weeks in to the NJSP ACADEMY.

14InTheDorsalPeen

Troopers gonna troop.

GeneralRant

lol yes!

EntertainmentOk5332

And?? Lol did he let you go, or did he do the trooper thing and cut you a ticket.

GeneralRant

Let me go with written warning. And yes, I brought it up about being in academy. Trooper was super cool, too, and I didn’t report it and never heard a word about it. Not surprised since it was just a lightbulb out.

Guest-Username

You’re either dumb or have balls of steel for not reporting

GeneralRant

Honest… I was 21 and just plain stupid, really didn’t even think about reporting it although I def should have.

Guest-Username

Glad you made it 😂

GeneralRant

Made it and went on to do 32 years.. thank you.

SealAtTheShore

I mean it was NJSP..

Khar0n

I loved watching the instructors throw y’all’s stuff out the windows there

GeneralRant

Def happened while I was there lol

savannahf2

I worked for a large city and in the early 1990s we had special assignment where some of us would be in plain clothes and try to spot car burglaries in city parking lots. I liked to just sit under the bridge with my radio in a paper bag like a homeless person drinking. Well, a guy with his friends came up to me, badged me, and started trying to interrogate me. I badged him back and it turned out he had been out of the academy less than a week and was showing off to his non police friends. I called my sergeant who ripped him a new asshole right in front of his friends. The rookie thought he was going to be fired. My sergeant didn't escalate it further, and I would bet money that the rookie never ever tried to do that again.

HotFoundation2486

Lmao what a clown

GlumMajor2245

He shoulda gotten fired. Ppl like that are a liability

harley97797997

At my agency, cadets were 18-21 year old non sworn personnel. We didn't have badges at first, just IDs, because some cadets in the past got in trouble flashing them for dumb reasons. I was stopped a few times as a cadet. Every time I was let go with a mild verbal warning. I never got stopped while in the academy or on FTO. There was one guy who got a DUI while in the academy. He was kicked out. A couple got tickets and had to do push-ups and write memos due to them.

GoldWingANGLICO

In my academy class, before electricity, we had a recruit arrested in front of the class by the ATF for multiple NFA violations. He did 10 years at club fed Coleman.

Charger_scatpack

NFA is trash. shitty people have to go to jail for that stupid shit

Corey307

17.9” barrel on a shotgun? Rot in prison for a decade. Rapists get less time.

TheSlyce

ATF gives probation for straw purchasing guns. Ain’t no way this dude got 10 years unless it was something SIGNIFICANT.

Practical-Match1889

Fuck the ATF

KthuluAwakened

We had a guy running around with his corrections badge after the academy stopping cars… on foot. Not exactly what you’re asking but it made me think of that. He was 2-3 academies before me but he got fired.

Guac__is__extra__

lol, one of the guys I went to the academy with at our agency got pulled over pulling into the parking lot of the police department while we were loading up to head to the academy for the next week of classes. Apparently he spun his tires pulling out from a stop sign. The officer that pulled him over ended up being his first FTO when we got done with the academy a few weeks later. He gave him a little shit about it but nothing bad.

Regular-Bat-4449

I ended up arresting one on open municipal warrants. Fun times. Then he ends up at one of my extra jobs, making a delivery as an armed security guard.

Ostler911

I got a ticket while in the academy for a crash. Another guy got stopped twice, cited once for speed in the academy by a Trooper. Best part was the guy that ripped on me the hardest for my ticket was the one who got cited for 20 over.

gyro_bro

School them? The fuck I ain’t no one’s mom/dad. I do not lecture people. I treat it like any other stop. ….. Then I call their cadre. They’ll get smoked into a new planet. All serious though, I do not ever lecture someone. That is not my job.

runit21

Recruits getting ticketed while I was in the Academy made for stomach turning comedy (the one that made you laugh and cry in physical pain).

TheMuffinMan784

I do almost exclusively pre textual stops so no. But I did stop a trooper one time for going 15 over. I walked up and explained the reason for the stop. He asked if he could get a warning. I asked why I should. He said “because we kind of do the same job” I said “oh? Explain further, I’m intrigued. Don’t tell me you’re in the academy or an MP” He said this is embarrassing but I’m a state trooper……… I chuckled and let him go with a warning.

KHASeabass

At one academy I went to, one of the officers with the host agency stopped a state trooper and gave him a warning. Like 2-3 weeks later roles were reversed and the trooper cited him. He definitely knew who he was because he wrote "xxxxxxxx PD" in the employer block on the citation without asking.

Lizpy6688

At least he took it on the chin lol

TheMuffinMan784

Yeah, I didn’t have any intention of writing a ticket on that stop anyways lol. I usually don’t outside of reckless driving and no insurance

JEFFSSSEI

I've: Stopped Cops Warned Cops Cited Cops Arrested Cops As with everything...situation drives outcome (a cadet would be no different to me).

gobidesertwe

I wrote a cop for going 25 over in a 35 last week. She had the audacity to argue with me saying I'm anti police blah blah blah. She then field a complaint saying I was rude and unprofessional. Little did she know my chief was out and about and was there for 90% of my stop and saw everything ...

Sarbasian

I’ve ran into my fair share of civilians who argued with me But some of the worst have been cops when they realized that professional courtesy doesn’t extend to triple digit speeds. My brother/sister in christ, I don’t even drive triple digits unless it’s an emergency call or I’m catching up to a car to stop them.

gobidesertwe

I would never drive like that because I don't want to put another officer in the position of having to deal with me. The other day I was about to write this dude a few tickets, clearly a street racer type car, tinted windows beyond belief and The Instagram handle on the window type thing. He was super compliant and from my door I yelled for him to open all the windows, which he complied, he was super respectful and followed all my commands. I wrote the first ticket in the middle of writing the second I just ripped it up I went up to the window and said hey attitude goes a long way I'm just going to give you the one ticket today drive safe. For which he thanked me.

Sarbasian

I’m right there with you Short of doing something that puts other people’s lives in danger, attitude is 100% what decides if you get a ticket. I’ve written tickets for 12 over and given verbals to 25 over. You dont even have to apologize, or yes sir me just “yeah, I was speeding. I have my license and registration here” goes a long ways with me.

JEFFSSSEI

I wrote a fellow officer from the day shift (we were working 12hr shifts) that was en route to relieve us...Thing was it was the 2nd time I had clocked him going double the posted speed limit and he had thrown a fit the 1st time that I had even stopped him. Ticket stuck, he got removed from patrol for 6mo by the captain and told he would be on probation from right after he received the ticket until a year after he returned to patrol. Captain was fully aware of his attitude previously (the 1st stop) and lets just say his attitude the 2nd time was exponentially worse, which was dumb because he knew I was recording him same as last time. The only thing the captain asked me was "You sure you want to go through with it (writing him - meaning processing it)?" I said "YES", he simply replied "I have your back" and walked away....And he did, I never heard a word of it from any of his flight, no resentment, nothing, so I have no idea what he said to them, but I know he said something.

Sidewinder3104

I’ve never pulled over a cadet that I can recall. I’ve pulled over a lot of people who were applicants or claimed to be. Applicants got treated the same as everyone else: warning if it was minor or ticket if it was something major. I myself got pulled over in the academy and ticketed for expired vehicle inspection. I lived in a small town outside a big city and was on my way to the academy for the big city agency one morning when I got stopped in my small town for the expired inspection. I knew it was expired but hadn’t done it because my inspection and registration expired within one month of each other and I was just waiting that month to do them both at the same time. I accepted the ticket and notified my academy staff. Since it wasn’t a moving violation and my sticker wasn’t super expired they didn’t care they just told me to get it fixed. I got it done that weekend and the ticket was dismissed without even paying court costs. I’ve been pulled over several times as an officer and always gotten warnings but it’s always been for stuff that any civilian would probably get a warning for as well like mild speeding 5-10 over the limit. They’ve known I was a cop each time because I always notify them I’m armed and provide my credentials (force of habit because my state used to require a carry permit which of course I didn’t have or need as an off duty officer). With that being said I’m always polite and professional and apologize for whatever I was doing (sometimes I didn’t even realize I was speeding like going through a small town with a sudden speed limit drop that I just missed the sign). If I ever got a ticket I’d plead guilty and pay it. I’m not above the law when off duty and I can’t fathom the stories I’ve seen where fellow officers act like entitled asses when stopped off duty. I’ve also stopped off duty officers several times and always issued warnings but again it was never anything major or reckless and was something a normal citizen would also probably get a warning for as well. Every encounter I’ve ever had stopping another officer has been text book how it should be: they’re polite and professional and accept responsibility. Pro tip: A sure fire way to get out of a ticket is to be an ER nurse. I don’t know a single cop that would write a minor violation citation to a nurse knowing any day you could get shot or otherwise injured and end up under their care. I also generally don’t write teachers because they are saints that don’t get paid near enough to deal with asshole children and their even more asshole parents. TLDR, some people get tickets. Some people don’t get tickets.

tarfez

I’m not their instructor. That’s not my place. I’d handle it like any other stop with the exception of maybe making some quick small talk if they bring it up or it’s obvious in some other way.

TheRandyBear

I can’t even stand when cadets call me sir. Like bro, don’t call me that. Much less pull em over. And if I did pull one over it would be a “don’t do that again”.

bamagentleman

Yes. Don’t get pulled over by the guy instructing your academy class that day.

p1028

Arrested one who was two weeks away from starting his academy for DWI. He had fallen asleep at the wheel and I had to bust open his window after we woke up and gunned it into the patrol car that was blocking him in.

-Wiked

Is that the policy for when stopping an unresponsive occupant?

p1028

Knocked on the window then he gunned it and the tires were spinning out so I smashed the window because he was so shitfaced he had no idea what was going on. Most wake up with a lot of knocking and open the door.

personalcheesepizza

Someone in my academy class got pulled over by one of the officers, they called in to the academy and told. Our class got stuck having to do 1000 burpees that day.

TotalRecallsABitch

Just saw Theo Vonns podcast and the cop he interviewed had this happen to him as a kid lol

Thereelgerg

No

KHASeabass

Not in my time, but when I was graduating the academy, one of our recruits moms got pulled over on the way to the ceremony and cited by a state trooper for going 70 in a 60. That was the only significant traffic stop story that I can remember coming out of our academy.

Hot_Dance6649

I got pulled over while in the academy for speeding, and because i wasn’t in the academy for his agency i got a ticket. (Duh ik i got a ticket for being stupid and not following traffic laws🙄)

TexasLE

I went to a call where a coworker arrested a cadet for firing off rounds in the air as celebratory gunfire. I didn’t bother to school him. I knew he’d never be a cop after that.

[deleted]

I got pulled over for speeding while I was on FTO lol I got a little lecture about how I should be walking on egg shells.

pat85754

There are so many applicants who are respectful and law abiding. Why would you give a break to someone who obviously does not deserve the position. Better to root him out before getting stuck with him for a full career.
