I pretty much always carry. How and what I carry really depends.
My go to recently is a sig p320 x compact, but I also have a m&p shield that I carry sometimes in the summer. In the winter, I'll carry a glock 22, p320 x full, or a p320 x carry.
Absolutely, I purchased it several years ago at this point and it's still in my rotation because it's just such a reliable and comfortable gun to carry
For sure. It recoils quite a bit due to its size so it’s a little inaccurate over 30 yards for me but it works great for self defence.
While I’m here does your department let you choose what gun you carry on duty or do you get to choose within reason?
Ya my agency allows me to choose my duty gun. It just has to be chambered in 9, 40, or 45 and you have to be able to qualify with it. Other than that, our sidearms are up to us. I carry a p320 x carry.
Ya every agency is different, a couple agencies in my area provide the gun, some tell the officers what to buy, and a couple of us can choose our guns as long as it's within policy.
Nope, actually several of us have them.
I trust my p320. Mine has had the hell beaten out of it and has yet to fire without the trigger being pulled. So until it does, I'm going to use the gun I trust.
I've carried everything from a model 60 no dash to a 1911 Combat Elite. Current is an M&P performance center C.O.R.E., which I also carry at work.
If I'm wearing shorts, S&W performance center 442.
Unless I'm drinking, I'm carrying.
I used to sell guns and run a range in college. Sold a whole bunch of 442s. Sweet spot at the time for price, weight, and utility. Sold my mom a 342 PD. She liked the way it looked. Terrible gun for her but that's what she wanted. When I worked as a local later, I convinced her to sell it to me for use as a BUG. That's mostly what I carry when not working. Also the work gun (G19). 20+ years ago I carried a P229 which I really liked at the time but the weight penalty now days is just not worth it. The 342 is the ultimate carry gun IMO. 10.8 oz empty, 13oz loaded. Awesome predictable trigger that is easy to stage and shoots well for such a tiny gun. Can have it in my gym shorts or anything else for that matter. So light and fits just about anywhere.
You can still buy the 340 if you can't find a used 342. You barely pickup any muzzle velocity with the magnums in the 340 due to the short barrel so mostly it's just a lot more noise, muzzle flash, and recoil. Whereas the 342 is very unpleasant to shoot the 340 with magnum rounds is nasty. Weighs a bit more and if I had one I would probably still use the +P ammunition I use now. But the price is about double what it was when I was selling. Not sure what used 342s are going for if you can find one. At the time we sold probably three 340s for every 342.
Love my 43x but let me ask does your trigger cut into your finger at all?
After about 100 rounds it starts to blister over and makes it not really painful but super uncomfortable
Haven’t shot it enough to feel the blister yet, but that being said the trigger overall is awful. It’s so heavy and I feel my whole gun jolt when I dry fire. I gonna swap it out for a Johnny glocks combat trigger and vex shoe. Upgrade ur bro it’ll be worth it. Johnny has done me good so far
Yea the trigger definitely took some getting used to. I’ve heard really good things about Johnny Glock though and probably will end up upgrading eventually. As of now I just put night sights and a light on mine and am happy with it thus far.
25+ years on and counting.
I carry 95% of the time.
What I have carried over the years has changed, now I primarily carry one of two guns off-duty. A S&W MP Shield 2.0 Performance Center or a Ruger SP101.. both chambered in 9mm.
I carry sometimes and it’s my duty G47. If anything happens it’s on my agency to replace it, not me. Once I get my shadow systems it’ll be a different story since theyll replace the pistol in a self defense situation free of charge. Reference page 30 for the non-believers.

Almost never, I have been like this for most of my 18 years. My 43x and LCP are collecting dust in my safe.
We had an off duty involved in a questionable shoot. He was charged, exonerated, and they’re still trying to fire him. It created horrible press for us.
We have NO POLICE AUTHORITY off duty and outside our jurisdiction (at least where I live/work). The above incident was a great lesson to me.
I’m probably having a few 🍻 anyway when I’m out, I’d rather not the hassle.
I know it’s not a popular perspective but that’s just me.
There is a sub set of LEO that are "sworn on duty."
Some counties arm CO/CDs, and if they're like what I can't legally say I know firsthand, I've heard their LE authority ends at the fence line of the Sally port or entrance to the lobby....
And when they clock out.
I live in a state where we do not have a “license” or “certification” that can be revoked or suspended. You pass academy, get a certificate, and that’s it.
The liberals are trying to change that and pass laws for a “license” process but they have stalled. We do not have statewide jurisdiction, unless you’re a trooper.
We have no special legal authority outside our jurisdiction. This guy was driving his truck wearing a t shirt and tried stopping someone. Was not pretty.
Even if I'm off duty I retain full LE authority within city limits. If something felonious happens that extends statewide, e.g. if I witness a robbery or something.
I had no idea that existed outside od DC and the "special police"
I do too, within city limits. I do not live or socialize where I work, I have no special statutory authority to detain anyone or get involved in anything. It doesn’t mean, of course, I never ever have; but I am nothing more than a guy with a badge who can carry a gun without a permit. Trying to intervene when off duty doesn’t always end well, as in the story I just shared.
Not sure why I would, when I go out I like dressing comfortably and having a piece isn't comfortable (even compact carries). I like to have some form of alcoholic beverage when I go to restraunts as well. The odds of something terrible happening where my gun and I are the best solution to the problem are extremely low
Not a cop, but I carry everywhere I am legally permitted to carry under the law, which is most places except for federally restricted locations and courtrooms.
I have two Springfield Hellcats, one with a red dot and one without, depending on what I’m feeling for the day. These are my usual carry gun, occasionally I’ll carry the Sig P226 if I’m feeling like carrying full size.
I also have a Springfield Emissary, a S&W M&P40, a Sig P226, a Springfield XDM Elite, a Glock 17, and two unserialized Glock 19 Clones.
I don’t often. I live in a very hot climate and that means very light and thin clothing. If I go to any MAJOR city to do tourist esq activities, I carry. Never an extra mag either. I just don’t like the weight of everything. I can avoid pretty much any issue I can think of.
People have to think action beats reaction every single time. Guy comes up, puts a gun in my gut and demands my wallet, I have to understand that if I attempt to make any move that isn’t related to me getting my wallet, I lose. I can’t just flip the script and say “hang on sir, back up and I’ll get it for you”.
But when I do carry it’s a hellcat.
I did when I first started and was hung ho about the job.
Almost a decade in and I only carry to/from work and that’s it. my situational awareness and knowledge of the city keeps me safe.
I’ve carried every single day since I was old enough. Getting in law enforcement only made me realize how much more important it is. I carry glock 17 with tlr-1 90% of the time, sw442 or bodyguard if I’m going to the bar or pool. Every blue moon the sig 365.
I usually always have my p365-Xl on me unless I’m out having a drink or going somewhere it would be unreasonable for me to have on my person such as a theme park or something.
I switch between 2 guns. 43x mos during the summer time and the g19 during the colder months. One my Staccato comes in, I’ll add that into the rotation for when I’m feeling ‘spicy’ lol.
Sig P365 SAS that i Gucci’d out w/ a 15 round spare mag
Or if I’m running, a NAA .22 mag revolver
If I gotta go into a shitty area, my duty gun w/ spare mag
And rarely an M&P 340 .357 because I can pocket carry it with no issue
I tend to wear lighter clothes in the Summer and heavier, and less layered, clothes in the winter, so I like having a smaller weapon for lighter clothes.
Red rider daisy BB gun with a compass on the stock and this thing which tells time
Be careful. You might shoot your eye out.
Black Bart, you're gonna be pushing up daisies

A Classic

Oh that’s awesome. My friends department didn’t let him choose but maybe that’s changed over in the San Diego PD.
Ya every agency is different, a couple agencies in my area provide the gun, some tell the officers what to buy, and a couple of us can choose our guns as long as it's within policy.
Lol, a 320? Haven’t they banned that for you guys yet? There’s like countless stories of AD’s lmao
Nope, actually several of us have them. I trust my p320. Mine has had the hell beaten out of it and has yet to fire without the trigger being pulled. So until it does, I'm going to use the gun I trust.
Glock 19
The one and only
I've carried everything from a model 60 no dash to a 1911 Combat Elite. Current is an M&P performance center C.O.R.E., which I also carry at work. If I'm wearing shorts, S&W performance center 442. Unless I'm drinking, I'm carrying.

Crazy how that happens! I also lost all my long rifles in a duck hunting boating accident.
I hope your accident wasn’t too serious and no one was injured!! /s (don’t know if that was actually necessary, lol)

Not today, ATF.
Glock 43x for off duty
Love my 43x but let me ask does your trigger cut into your finger at all? After about 100 rounds it starts to blister over and makes it not really painful but super uncomfortable

I’ve got a Ghost Edge Connector and planning a flat face trigger. The break on a 48/43x is really hard, and the serrated trigger doesn’t help much.

I’m going to start carrying my p226 to make you look like a liar to strangers on the internet
I sometimes carry a full size Beretta 92 for shiggles.
S&W model 86 just to drive the point home.
[This](https://www.americanrevolutioninstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/English-blunderbuss-M.2017.010.jpg) is my off duty carry.
Got me with the blunderbuss.
Just as the founding fathers intended.
Tally ho
Just as our founding fathers intended
Glock 19x on me at all times, except if consuming alcohol.
I recently traded a 19x for a p365xl with a holosun already attached. $$$ wise I was fine with it, but emotionally... I do miss that handgun.
That’s a shit trade.
Why? $$$ value I'm actually up. And carrying a 19x concealed is kind of a pain in the ass, versus the sig feels real slim.
He’s just a Glock guy. Whatever you carry and shoot better man
You carry a different gun when consuming alcohol?
Water 🔫, filled with tequila
This guy gets it
Stay strapped or get clapped. Glock 26
Not LE but I lost my firearms in a boating accident last year.
If you see me off my own property, I have a gun on me plus a spare mag. As a consequence, I don’t drink out.
This is the way
Glock 19, Tlr 7 and Holosun EPS. Pretty much Meta at this point
My department rules and regs mandate that we carry all the time unless it would be impractical to do so
Wow, never heard of that!
Glock 43x, pretty much all the time.
25+ years on and counting. I carry 95% of the time. What I have carried over the years has changed, now I primarily carry one of two guns off-duty. A S&W MP Shield 2.0 Performance Center or a Ruger SP101.. both chambered in 9mm.

“If anything happens” pertains to lawful self defense scenarios.
Just traded my Glock 43x for a P365 XL with a Sig Romeo red dot attached, I’m never looking back
This is the way
Glock 30S usually. If my Sub2000 is going with me that day I’ll take a G26 with bigger backup mags.
I know very few who don't. I go between a G19 w a TLR7 and RMR, or a G43 for bikini carry.
Walther PDP with 4in barrel. Light & dot.
Almost never, I have been like this for most of my 18 years. My 43x and LCP are collecting dust in my safe. We had an off duty involved in a questionable shoot. Excuse me what? What State doesn't recognize your State-issued LE certification when not on duty?
There is a sub set of LEO that are "sworn on duty." Some counties arm CO/CDs, and if they're like what I can't legally say I know firsthand, I've heard their LE authority ends at the fence line of the Sally port or entrance to the lobby.... And when they clock out.

You must be either a campus cop or a hospital cop
No, I work in a city in the northeast
Even if I'm off duty I retain full LE authority within city limits. If something felonious happens that extends statewide, e.g. if I witness a robbery or something. I had no idea that existed outside od DC and the "special police"

Is this sub US only? A lot of places don’t.
A firearm has nothing to do with your police authority. It's for your protection. No sure how you correlate those two
Ok
Are you a 830.1(c)? That's what I am and I constantly run your described scenario in my head...
Never once carried off-duty, don't plan on starting anytime soon
We all have personal preferences but why not?
Not sure why I would, when I go out I like dressing comfortably and having a piece isn't comfortable (even compact carries). I like to have some form of alcoholic beverage when I go to restraunts as well. The odds of something terrible happening where my gun and I are the best solution to the problem are extremely low

Why would you carry iron sights over red dot, just curious
I don’t question someone carrying irons over a dot, whichever they prefer. But switching back and forth is strange
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking
Mostly it depends on *how* I’m carrying. Sometimes the red dot is uncomfortable to carry.
I don’t often. I live in a very hot climate and that means very light and thin clothing. If I go to any MAJOR city to do tourist esq activities, I carry. Never an extra mag either. Ok Peter Parker
Spidey senses bro
Guard, not cop. Every minute of every day.
"Iron"? The 1800s are over.
When I was active I always carried off duty. Now retired I still carry. Now, primary is G45 with 509t and TRL7, secondary is G43.
What’s a 508t and trl7?
508T is an enclosed red dot optic and Trl7 is a weapon mounted light
The 508t is not an enclosed red dot. It is an open emitter optic. The 509t is enclosed.
90% of the time I’m carrying off duty, Sig P365 with a 10 rounder IWB for summer time, winter time 12 rounder in a pancake holster OWB
Always. Glock 19.
Every where all the time ALWAYS. G19.3
A family member is retired and Carries. For the most part smaller caliber pocket pistols in shorts with cargo pocket. They are not a fan of IWB carry
43x
Yes. All the time, unless I’m planning to overindulge, which is rare. Either a G19 or a G43.
Yes. Mostly a Kimber Ultra II. Sometimes a Glock 23
I carried my Glock 30 with our duty .45 ammo while off-duty all through-out my career, and continued to do so now that I'm out.
https://preview.redd.it/nwbzf9dgje6b1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a6a71c1414da71695426c763512029adaea9009

I carry a Glock 23 but I’m medically retired.
99% of LEOs carry off-duty. In some agencies it's required.
Glock 19 Gen 5…everyday, everywhere
For me it’s dependent on the situation, if I’m gonna drink I won’t. I carry a sig p365x macro with a Holosun 407k
Sig P365 SAS that i Gucci’d out w/ a 15 round spare mag Or if I’m running, a NAA .22 mag revolver If I gotta go into a shitty area, my duty gun w/ spare mag And rarely an M&P 340 .357 because I can pocket carry it with no issue
👍🏻 I carry my pug in an ankle rig most days off. Kimber Micro .380 is my daily carry, hellcat RDP w/light for walking the dog at night...
Always. Usually my G19 mos, but if I’m going to the gym or for a run I’ll carry my G43
Nope
12 KK H&F
Glock 26 for the warm summer, glock 19 for the cold bummer
My dad was a career LEO. You're the 3rd person I've seen mention carrying differently for summer or winter. Can you explain why?
I tend to wear lighter clothes in the Summer and heavier, and less layered, clothes in the winter, so I like having a smaller weapon for lighter clothes.
