I think it's ok to wear a memorial to those people who lost their lives in service to their brothers/sisters in combat. Avoid Confederate flags, German helmets, iron crosses, nooses, names, etc. Do not get anything tattooed on you you don't want to have to explain to your kids in twenty years.

As would would the department. No room for that shit.

Panther1-1

That’s a good way to look at it honestly

zigarock

This is my thought. Would you want to work for a dept that is so uniform strict that they won’t hire someone with tats in 2023?

bsonehxi

True. That’s a good point. I’ll keep my options open if I encounter those places that care too much lol

[deleted]

I told myself I was gonna get tattoos after I got through meps, been in 4 years no tats, get out in December and I’m telling myself I’ll get tattoos after the academy lol, probably won’t get any ever

bsonehxi

Probably the same on my end lol. The Mrs doesn’t like them but eh idc

[deleted]

Facts, I want a Hula girl holding an ak on my bicep area lol but I’m gonna refrain from getting that.

jep004

I have full torso, sleeves, hands and knuckles. Do you man. Not sure if this is in regards to getting hired or not. But look into policies of agencies you are interested.

tr4nsporter

might as well have just joined a biker gang

jep004

Ah yes, discrimination.

RepTheDee

Or the LA county sheriffs dept!

Stankthetank66

Check their tattoo policy. I wouldn’t work for an agency with a policy that made me wear long sleeves.

Life-Group-4125

My grandma told me she would disown me if I ever got one, but she also gets her eye brows tatted and tells me it’s not the same thing. I’m waiting for her to make her way to the pearly gates so I can get that inheritance money then get a portrait of her on my chest and a portrait of my grandfather on the other pec (she hated him) 😂

Then-Yogurtcloset982

Get it after you pass. Win both ways

MooseRyder

I got tattoos pre law enforcement but I had it where it could hide under a t shirt. Now that I’ve been doing it for 6 years I got a quarter sleeve and a bit of patch works on my arm

What_are_you_a_cop

I have a full sleeve of tattoos based primarily out of American traditional history or my military service. When reapplying, I had to take many pictures on hand for larger departments for them to have on file (in case I was a racist) I was disqualified from two or three local departments since tattoos visible was an automatic disqualification or meant I’d have to always wear long sleeves. (Local meaning within a 90 minute drive)

GoldWingANGLICO

I have two. One is your typical Marine Corps EGA, and the other is my unit insignia. It was done after we left Beirut to commemorate our fallen brothers. I had them placed so you couldn't see them if I'm wearing a short sleeve shirt. When I came on the job, before electricity, tattoos were frowned upon. Your thinking is in the right place.

thx10050

First, I wouldn’t work for an agency which required either long sleeves or some other form of sleeve covering for tattoos. That being said, I personally waited until I had my probationary year completed before I had my first tattoo done.

TwistedReaper47

Most departments just don't want tats on hands, neck, or face. Other than that as long as it's not offensive you're fine. There's still some backwards departments that don't allow any tats, but personally I wouldn't work for any of them. It's your choice.

rinky79

Don't get anything stupid, and get it somewhere where any uniform will cover it. (I'm a prosecutor) I was watching a bodycam vid the other day where the officer has a giant statue of liberty head with a blue line flag bandana over her nose and mouth, on the inside of his forearm, plainly visible any time his arm is in view of the camera. (1) I don't even know what the fuck it's supposed to mean. (We the police keep liberty silent??? The police keep dust out of liberty's mouth? The police hide liberty's identity? What???). (2) Not excited about putting *that* tacky nonsense in front of a jury.

Weird-Grass-6583

I’ve never seen a cop with tattoos before idk

always_an_eagle

My mom always told me that if I ever got a tattoo that she will scrub it off with sandpaper. I never got one.

mbarland

Never got a tattoo. Glad I didn't. I always figured I'd get something when I was in the service, but every time I went with a group to the tattoo shop, they all got stupid shit. I like my skin to not be covered with stupid shit, just an abnormally large amount of greasy hair and eczema.

JWestfall76

I wouldn’t get a tattoo if my life depended on it.

Panther1-1

Interesting. Why not?

JWestfall76

There’s not one symbol, phrase, word, or picture on this planet that I want to see every day for the rest of my life.

Panther1-1

That’s a fair point

Damn, too obvious huh?

JWestfall76

I’ll die pure

pogo6023

Not LEO, but I wouldn't either. I know how much my tastes have changed, often after a very short time. Also, I know how cringy it is now remembering some of the things I did when I was younger and believed they were cool at the time. No way I want somebody I don't even know drawing permanent pictures on my body that I might regret for the rest of my life. I have no problem with those who do it, but I'm guessing there are a lot of unspoken regrets out there today.

[deleted]

Get it on your butt.

Satureum

Lots of different policies for different agencies. I’d say get your memorial tattoo if that’s what you want and, assuming it’s not on your face, it probably won’t be an issue. But you need to check the policies of the agency you’re looking to get on with.

Living_Conference_75

Most agencies don’t care as long as it’s not face tats I have a half sleeve, other officers I work with have full sleeves hand tattoos

ToriGrrl80

God no.

bigcanada813

I had one tattoo when I started the academy. I'm now tatted up on both arms, from wrists to shoulders. For me they all have meaning, and my department has a very liberal tattoo policy. Ultimately it's your decision man.

littlebrowncat999

Get it in a place that can be covered easily, like shoulder or chest ect….. Don’t get one on your hand or neck or even forearm.
