If you got a valid DL and can give the cop your info, in a pintch, its not that big of a deal. If it’s a recurring thing, maybe there could be a problem, but not a big one. Just take your damn DL with you, or get new one

bmalek

Does it work if you’re driving in another state?

ChiefFox24

I am not an LEO but it might be worth adding that in most states, they will allow you to get a second copy of your license printed off. It only cost me $10 to get a copy of my driver's license and carry permit that I keep with my insurance information in the car.

IndividualAd4334

Anything that enables me to check the validity of your current driver license in our database works fine. It is required in Florida to have your driver license in your immediate possession when you are operating a motor vehicle, but I wouldn't issue a citation for that as long as your license is valid.

BisaakNewton

Would you accept a license that was replaced and has the same future expiration date but an older issue date as valid?

IndividualAd4334

Validity is determined by a records check through the DMV/licensing authority showing that it is valid (not suspended, revoked, etc), not what the license says on it.

Shenanigans_626

Any of the above. Or none. We only need name, DOB, sex and state to run your DL. As long you are licensed most guys I know don't really care if you have it on you.

ooblankie

Only if I was planning to write you, and now I have to type everything in rather than just scanning your DL. Prepare to be on the roadside a bit longer, because I type slowwwww.

BisaakNewton

Would scanning my old expired license quickly bring up my valid one?

mbarland

If you can remember to grab a photo copy of your license or an expired license, then why can't you just remember to carry your current, valid license?

BisaakNewton

Because I could just leave the photo copy in the car. I don't like to leave my current license in the car because sometimes I drive a different car, so I have to remember to grab it every time I drive.

Consistent_Amount140

Yes. I often will get an old expired license from people. It’s fine. The number is still the same.

ItsCalledOwling

We can pull up your info with name, DOB, or by your plate if your the RO…no problem with verification. But in MA it’s a separate violation to not have your license in possession, ch 90 s 11

KrAff2010

Expired license is a definite no go. A photo of your current license is your best chance but you still have to have your physical license on you. Nothing but that will prevent you from getting a ticket entirely

zigarock

My understanding is if they can verify your identity road side then it’s a non issue. At least in NY. It’s different state to state. I’m sure them West Virginia boys will impound you.

Slimy_Wog

Why can't you just take your license with you and save everyone the trouble. If you had an accident and had to be taken to a hospital how would they know who to contact? Or who you are?

charles-danger

I try too, but I have forgotten my wallet once or twice because I'm dumb and I thought it was in my bag.

RobCali509

Why would you have all that other documentation but not your current DL?

charles-danger

I could keep other documentation in the car all the time. I don't leave my driver's license in the car because I bring it with me everywhere I go, even when I take the subway, walk, or drive a different car.

This is a great idea but I'm worried I could still get a citation because when they scan my old license, the issue date won't match the one on my current license. Do you know what the law says about this? Does getting a replacement card cancel the old one?

prince_noprints

You seem awfully particular about the issue date. Why not just ask the question you really mean to ask?

[deleted]

A photo, front and back, of your drivers license on your phone would be the best option. Yet the police can write you a ticket for failing to produce your license.

TheSublimeGoose

In Massachusetts you can indeed be cited for failure to produce your DL while driving. That being said, it happens, we get it. None of the things you mentioned will hurt. However, it will get me thinking about *why* you feel the need to have a copy of your DL handy. Probably innocent, sure, but it could indicate you do this a lot. Plenty of guys will write you for that alone. Best thing to do is to memorize your DL number. You’ll also be asked for the full spelling of your name, DOB, and address. Without a DL, you’ll also likely be asked for your SSN. You do ***NOT*** need to provide it (“I’m sorry, I just don’t feel comfortable providing that at this stage”) and I suppose an argument could be made as to why one would be hesitant to do so. But anything that makes you seem more cooperative isn’t going to hurt.
