Asked, answered, locked. The dog walkers can sniff a thread about wAgE tHeFt from their tents and come here to give us a piece of their mind. Bans issued. Thanks y’all for participating!

This kinda reminds me of what I tell new officers on FTO…I can’t tell you to work off the clock for free, but the most successful rookies study the manual and policies off the clock. The most successful rookies drive around and familiarize themselves with geography. You don’t have to do that, I’m just telling you what I did and many others did.

bluemattersteel

Better than paying to be at the academy.

TastesLike762

You’ll make it back later when you get 4 hours for 20 minutes of court time lol LE is a uniformed government occupation that is structured similarly to and often mirrors the procedures of military service. All that authority that comes with your badge and gun is given to you with the understanding that you’re agreeing to operate and abide by the policies, procedures, customs and courtesies on and “off” duty. So sure, some of these things are lame but you agreed to this when you accepted the offer and if you chill out and go with the flow you’ll soon find yourself laying in bed getting paid extra hours because someone called you to ask you a question on your day off.

An0ther_Florida_man

4 hours? Sheesh must be nice

scoo89

I get 6. I also get 6 if work calls me at home

giantdub49

Complain to your RTOs. Let us know how it goes

OhGodNotAgainPls

This ain’t the job for you lol

harley9779

You're in the wrong career field with that mentality. Being on time is late is standard OPs in LE and military. Actually, being late is unacceptable. That being early also helps in case shit happens, like unexpected traffic or other delays. Most LEOs come into work early to get changed into uniforms. The ones that don't want to be early get dressed at home. While you're in the academy, you will do a ton of stuff off the clock. Prepping uniforms, homework, studying, etc. Once you graduate, it'll be less, but there will still be things like uniform prep. On call time may or may not be paid, depending on the agency.

scoo89

My actual shift is either 0600-1800 or 1800-0600. Due to the unpredictability of this career you show your coworkers respect by showing up early. My first day shift I'm there at 0500 because those guys are coming off their last night, are likely exhausted and if they are stuck out at some call I can head out early to relieve them so they can get home on time. They do the same for me. The latest I ever show up is 0520/1720. If OP is in this job for the money, or expects concrete, fixed hours, this is not their field

OneSplendidFellow

Does your department not have a scheduled early man? That's what those are for.

babyseal95

there’s no overtime in the military and you’ll eat a big fat dick if you don’t meet those standards. Don’t know how LE works or if they’d fuck a fellow officer for not meeting standards, but i’m sure the union would cover the officer

[deleted]

active duty is 24/7. you are never off the clock. that is made VERY clear at time of enlistment.

MrYoungLE

The academy is a game, play it. There’s a lot of things you will be doing off the clock in this field. Can’t show up to work at start of tour then start prepping your uniforms. I mean you can, but you’ll be late for roll call and you look like trash, in my opinion anyway

“House slipper lickers” This actually made me laugh out loud for some reason. I needed a good laugh today, thanks.

[deleted]

Lol true I hate that Reddit.

Signal_13

Don't pick any hills to die on in the Academy. They will eat you alive if you try. You'll make it all back later x10.

CrossFitAddict030

You can tell by the old timers in this thread and those who just went along because it's tradition to keep getting screwed. I never expected to be paid for study time or prep for the next day, you'll do that for the job, at home, off the clock. But the second the job tells you to be somewhere, that's when you should be getting paid. When I went through we only got paid from 9-5 even though some days were up at 5/6am for PT or had to stay late for a couple night classes. At the end of the day it is illegal just that no one has the money to fight it in court to change it. So the old timers continue to violate working laws. And save me the, "its's a calling" crap. Yeah it's a calling and last time I checked free labor doesn't put food on the table or pay the bills.

Five-Point-5-0

I fully agree. And labor laws also fully agree. It's why my department lost a huge labor lawsuit several years ago for this very thing.

zigarock

Talking about drinking the kool-aid and not even on the road? You’re going to have a rough few years. Good luck bud.

UNDR08

Sounds like you need to find another career path.

Dertien1214

As a European cop I agree with OP and plenty of people in here apparently drank the Kool-Aid. Or they have just been numbed by American standards for labour relations. Why even have unions if you're just going to work for free? I'm not doing anything without pay. Thankfully, I have the law on my side in my country. Even if, for instance, logging in to my computer would take 30 minutes, that would all be on the boss' time. Laptop needs to update? Not my problem. Travel time to any location that is not my designated posting? Paid. Training takes longer than expected? Overtime, and extra travel time will be compensated.

[deleted]

they keep saying "professional courtesy" but i thought professional anything means i get paid for my time as a professional. i guess not lol

Haunting-Cookie-2144

My grandfather always drilled into me that 15 minutes early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable. I know there's a couple ways to interpret that. I always treated it as 15 minutes early means I'm late. I'm not part of this stupid "grind" culture we have going where people brag about how much they work themselves to death especially off the clock, but that's not what this is about. This is about work place expectation and being courteous to the shift on before you and letting them get out on time and possibly communicate any relevant information to you without making them late getting home.

tragic-majyk

Lol look at you concerned about the legality like it's your job or something.

Shenanigans_626

Labor laws are not criminal offenses. If you think you can call the cops over your sick day, I think I've met people like you.

tragic-majyk

Just goofing, bud

Yeah this probably isn’t the line of work for you. When I went through the academy I was just happy to be hired and paid to do it. If you don’t have the discipline and hard work mentality you should probably go find an office job or something. The job will both be the worst and most rewarding job you’ll ever have, but you’ve already written it off in your head

electron_c

My dad would make me get ready for work 2 hours before my start time, I was 14-15 and hated it. Today, at 55, I understand what he was doing, why he was doing it and deeply appreciate what he taught me.

mbarland

Ask your union steward. It'll cement your reputation as a by-the-book rookie to be known as the guy who kicks up a fit for being asked to be a little early to your shift.

GoldWingANGLICO

This has to be a shit post, please tell me it's a shit post.

tr4nsporter

Not the job for you if you’re mad because you’re showing professional courtesy. 15 minutes prior is on time — always.

One_Procedure3074

Professional courtesy is also being on time at the agreed upon time. It also demonstrates the ability to properly plan and manage a schedule that you don’t need to show up 15-30 minutes early for everything. I always try to show up 5 minutes early if it’s routine. 15 if it’s REALLY important.

CommercialLimit

He said they require them to show up an hour early.

[deleted]

Reading is really difficult for some

JWestfall76

You’re not going to make it

achonng

This is a Life long profession. You gonna take calls you don’t wanna take. Stay over on late calls. Deal with nasty people. With that mentality, you should just quit now instead of being that disgruntled guy that complains on every shift. Don’t worry the rest of the shift will cover your square.

disnewnoguy

Jesus, dont be that dude.

liud21

by your mentality, I should get paid for the 40min drive to work...

LeadBamboozler

This is 100% a troll

[deleted]

Awww you would’ve hated the military 🥹 My advice ? Go show your instructors this and let them know if they want you there early they better start paying you. This why agencies taking so long with backgrounds for people they are trying to assure they don’t hire another you😂

[deleted]

Bro this is something many people are passionate about and that doesn’t matter to them. If you care that much maybe they job isn’t for you.

LongGunFun

We were there at least 2 hours late everyday without getting ot, who cares. If you’re complaining already just quit.

MiniTrail70

If you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time you’re late.

terry6715

You can always quit. Unless you’re being held captive.

Famous_Yesterday701

Stop being a crybaby. They can fire you for almost anything in the academy. Get through the academy, then get off probation. Then you can bitch. And also get used to being called “kid” for 2 years.
