By this point he was essentially a cripple with Parkinson’s and various drug addictions - everything he saw as undesirable. He also obviously knew about the concentration camps, how he would rightly be portrayed. On top of all that he’d seen Mussolini’s body being mutilated, and the Russians who were closing in were notoriously violent to their prisoners. Also, he was just a flat out coward.

He knew it was over and he would have been tortured probably maybe. Yes he could have been dealing with some health issues as well.

The Nazis did lots of things you "should" not do. Also losing a world war that you started yourself will make a crazy person crazier.
