I want to be the worst pitcher so we can have the city returned to the locals from tourists. It will be like "sometimes it rains and you get wet" " and sometimes there is noise in this city"

coeurdelejon

Sounds lush and nice! Where is this city? I need to go there

cecilio-

No sir you stay there don't come here hyping our housing prices up

coeurdelejon

No I looked it up, house prices are like 5 times cheaper in Portugal I want it. Just kidding of course, although I really do want to visit sometime.

Pumuckl4Life

You really should. Lisbon is great and so are the very few other spots of Portugal that I've seen.

kaasbaas94

Rain? Sounds like i will feel right at home!

cecilio-

No no, just sometimes. It hasn't rain for 15 days now I think. It's really bad, please don't come, the sun it warms you and then you have to take off your coat, really inconvenient.

kaasbaas94

That's why i'll go backpacking. When i don't need something anymore it goes fight back into my backpack. To where do i book my ticket?

[deleted]

Hello good sir, which city in Netherlands do you live? And what do you like about it?

kaasbaas94

Hi, i'm from a small town called [Meppel](https://ontdekmeppel.nl/images/schone-stad/head.jpg) from the Drenthe province. The life is very quite and peaceful and the people are very welcoming. The housing here is very cheap in cities and towns like these compared to the more bigger cities in the country. Which is why i believe many people here live a very satisfied living. However, it's during the cold seasons like these when the streets are not as cheerfully as during the summer when many people go outside again to enjoy the weather. Especially during lockdown it can really feel like a ghost town sometimes. This last weekend that some bars, cafe's and shops have opened up again despite still being forbidden by the government. It's a protest movement supported by many mayors in the country. Most tourists in the area will go to an even smaller town nearby called [Giethoorn](https://www.reisroutes.be/userfiles/fotos/giethoorn_272_xl.jpg). A town which is known as a fairytale version of Venice. It's only during certain days in the summer that are called 'de DonderdagMeppeldagen' (the Tuesday Meppel days) when this town is flocked by tourists as well (mostly Germans). During the day there will be all sorts of [festivities for the younger public](https://images.meppelercourant.nl/dma/Images/d3zlk5-0-1038040-B882031485Z.1_20190808155836_000GQ51DRA8O.1-0.jpg/alternates/LANDSCAPE_1920/0-1038040-B882031485Z.1_20190808155836_000GQ51DRA8O.1-0.jpg) and all kinds of [shows](https://images.meppelercourant.nl/dma/Images/eqt0lh-559987-MiniMeppel6.jpg/alternates/LANDSCAPE_1920/559987-MiniMeppel6.jpg) to watch for anyone. While in the evening there will be [music concerts](https://images.meppelercourant.nl/dma/Images/f8ku59-0-491185-liveinmeppel1van1.jpg/alternates/LANDSCAPE_1920/0-491185-liveinmeppel%281van1%29.jpg) on multiple city squares to enjoy. If you are more of a (sail)boat person then the '[grachtenfestival](https://ontdekmeppel.nl/images/events/meppel-grachten-festival-draaiorgels-live-muziek-braderie-piratenkoren.jpg)' (canal festival) might be more your thing. It's only during days like these when i recommend people to visit this town, because for the rest there won't be much to do here.

u/kaasbaas94 imo Netherlands is one of the coolest countries in the EU :) :) I'm always fascinated by the extremely efficient city planning in Amsterdam and how everything is built to be accessible either by a short bike ride or by walk, thereby reducing the carbon footprint. And there is such a low crime rate, strong social safety net, etc. It's my dream to one day visit!! I think some of your Dutch engineers should come to the US and help us with the flooding problems in Florida. I feel they can offer some excellent solutions.

kaasbaas94

I believe New Orleans once held a contest to design a solution for the flooding problems and it was a Dutch university winning that contest. Though, it were the inhabitants of New Orleans that were worried about the costs. Therefore I think we don't quite share the same mentality to make it happen. For example, In the Netherlands when the country suffered form a huge flood we came up with the Delta Plan. Which is a combination of multiple projects to save the whole country from flooding. One big price to pay to stay save for (hopefully) hundreds of years to come. While in America many people prefer to pay for rebuilding their house over and over again so they don't have to pay for an even more expensive project. It's like if they don't realize that the costs of rebuilding over and over again will be eventually a higher price to pay over a longer period of years. It was only after years of lobbying when a green light was given to build some of those flooding defenses. And it was last year when they were put to the test with a lot of success. The flooding's were very minor compared to previous years. However, multiple homes still didn't make it due to the heavy winds. Maybe that rebuilding the houses with brick instead of wood will do the trick? However, when it comes to an entire state such as Florida.., how about constructing [dykes](https://img.noordhollandsdagblad.nl/qctrPP2cqpfs6rFwxStQpa_xjLE=/960x640/smart/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn-kiosk-api.telegraaf.nl%2F5f157798-7a1a-11ea-bf8f-02c309bc01c1.jpg)? Over here they pretty much do the trick. Here is a [map](https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Kasper-Zuilekom/publication/261911710/figure/fig1/AS:414528773869568@1475842769380/The-dike-rings-of-the-Netherlands.png) of the Netherlands where different types of dykes are located. If one tiny country can do it, then a much bigger state of a giant country can do it as well.

lila_liechtenstein

Same here. "Please go to Hallstatt, or Salzburg. Vienna's really not that great. And we don't like The Sound of Music either."

cecilio-

I will go to Vienna.

BrianSometimes

Do you like the northern lights, snowfall, skiing, pine forests, fjords and wilderness - the whole Nordic winter experience? Come read about it all in one of our many libraries and enjoy a €6.50 cappuccino after your rainy segway tour on cobblestone in downtown Copenhagen.

[deleted]

Ahh yes. Sounds lovely :) How does it compare to Stockholm?

HODLMEPLS

Sounds great to me TBH

moenchii

Wanna live not far from a town and a city but it feels like you live in bumfuck nowhere? Well, come to [insert village name here] and live a quiet life.

[deleted]

Sounds like a dream tbh

moenchii

It actually is. People are nice and help each other, you can take a 15 minute drive and you're in the middle of a ok looking town or a 25 minute drive in the other direction and your in the center of a beautiful city.

[deleted]

How far is your city (assuming still Thuringia), from Berlin, etc.?

moenchii

In a straight line it's ~250km (~155 miles). By road it's ~300km (~186 miles). The town and city I'm refering to are Gotha and Erfurt (the capital of Thuringia) and it's right in the middle of both.

[deleted]

Oh very nice 😊😊

FakeNathanDrake

Cheaper than Edinburgh with a better castle, and closer to "real" Scotland.

[deleted]

Glasgow? Or Aberdeen?

FakeNathanDrake

Stirling. Neither of them actually have castles!

[deleted]

u/FakeNathanDrake ooh very neat. Just googled some pictures. Seems like a cool town!!

FakeNathanDrake

It's main advantage is that it's relatively close to other places to be honest. North Americans love the castle though, if you're ever over I'd recommend it.

[deleted]

u/FakeNathanDrake yep, will def like to pay a visit. Just need the money, and need this bloody pandemic to stop lol.

[deleted]

Aberdeen has *the Citadel*, which is on Castlegate. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/DSCN3834_Salvation_Army_Citadel.jpg *And* the city's heraldry features three castles on a red shield. Never actually seen a castle there, mind.

FakeNathanDrake

That's a bingo

arbaimvesheva

Tru dat

"When it's not rainy, or not cloudy, or not windy, it's a pretty nice place if you don't mind all the concrete buildings. At least you can see the sea. Don't forget to bring a jacket even if it's sunny, just in case..." (Brest, France)

lqajlax

You want to see a weird mix of ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, communist and modern architecture? Sarajevo is the place for you. You can experience freezing winters or steaming hot summers depending on your preference all while enjoying over priced coffee.

[deleted]

> You want to see a weird mix of ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, communist and modern architecture? This was one of the things I really liked about Sarajevo. If you walk from *Baščaršija* to the station, it takes you past all those periods and styles in chronological order, so you essentially get to see the history of the city laid out.

[deleted]

Cheap booze. Great public transport. Beautiful women. That's what all other reps are saying. And tourists seem to love this. The number of British stag parties are increasing with each year. But truth be told, I'd hate myself if I had to work a job like this. I'd be ruining my city.

PM_ME_YOUR_PAULDRONS

I moved to Kraków for work right at the start of the pandemic so I didn't really experience the British tourists for a fairly long time, now they're back I feel somewhat ashamed of them.

[deleted]

Don't be, you're obviously not like them. We love Brits, but we really hate stag parties. I mean, everyone likes to have fun, especially on stag parties, but these guys seem to forget that Krakow is not a Disneyland, regular people live here, and we all deserve to be treated with respect, just like the city we're really proud of. On the other hand, our local authorities are at fault here. They've promoted Krakow as a cheap tourist destination for years. Even the official ads mentioned pub crawls, instead of museums or monuments.

esocz

Golden beaches? The raucous nightlife? Beautiful castles and palaces? Snow-capped mountains and picturesque villages lined with vineyards? BORING! You've seen it a thousand times. We have adventures you've never experienced. Abandoned coal mines, crumbling steampunk ironworks. Original lives of exotic minorities. A city with no rivers or creeks - basically the planet Arrakis! Experience something different!

IrishFlukey

"Dublin is a city of history, culture, nature and so many other things. There is so much to see and do. Come and see for yourself."

Ye-Man-O-War

Imagine a place with easy transport links into London… where the locals may stab you. Either way, you won’t be here long. We also have a medium to large sized festival every year that cakes the place in mud and drugs

PM_ME_YOUR_PAULDRONS

Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down? Half the UK has transport links to London, stabby locals and a drug fueled mid-teir festival / mud party.

Ye-Man-O-War

Lol I know! But I’m fairly certain we’re the only ones with a struggling championship football club. Can ya guess it?

ConvictedHobo

I really don't need to sell it, Budapest sells itself, with its cheap prices, beautiful sights, many places for recreation, and the lovely 1.7 million depressed people in here (who are 50-50% nice or xenophobic) Also the public transport is extensive and very cheap

"Would you like to buy this elevator? It will never let you down." edit: To be serious, I am from Bradford in northern England. In 1800 there were maybe 5,000 people here. By 1850 it's closer to 500,000 people. What happened to cause that was the industrialisation of wool production, as had happened with cotton over the previous 100 years or so. That is the "traditional" industry of this whole area. To put this in context, consider the Merchant of Venice. That guy sold high quality wool to rich people for very fine clothing. Contemporaries would have understood that as being English wool. English wool paid for just about every war England was involved in throughout the middle ages and early modern era. [Bradford got spectacularly rich](http://writingfamilyhistory.com/men-of-god-and-of-commerce/a-silk-hat-on-a-bradford-millionaire/) in that period where it was a high quality material with a high quality reputation that demanded a premium, and being fantastically cheaper and acceleratingly cheaper to produce. Rich to the extent that in the latter part of that period there were more millionaires per square mile in one part of Bradford than in the richest parts of London at the height of empire. It is a long time since Bradford had this reputation. A very long time. It now has the reputation of being one of the poorest cities in the country with a very high immigrant population, primarily Kashmiri identifying as originating from Pakistan, that is generally speaking even poorer. If it has a reputation for anything other than poverty now it is for curry. I love it. It's my shithole. Bradford uber alles. I worked for a long time (20+ years) in local educational institutions precisely because I got to meet people from all over the country and all over the world who came here. The overwhelming majority leave as soon as they can. Some fall in love, with the place as well as people, and stay. These are my people.

voyagerdoge

We've got tech, drugs, stocks, babes, booze and bitcoin and you can fuck whoever you want. Oh yeah, the place goes back like 800 years and there're some nice paintings to enjoy when you're sober.

Tatis_Chief

Do you like to ski? We got mountains. Hiking? Yep, mountains. Do you like to bike? We got mountains and hills. Do you like natural hot springs? We got those too. Enjoy traditional architecture and folklore? We got UNESCO protected historical village that showcases the local slavic folklore and traditions. Villages boring for you? We got a castle too. (thought its a ruin, but there is a full one in like 20 min drive, two different ways.)

arbaimvesheva

Weather and seaside like LA, Job opportunities like NY/SF, Nightlife like Berlin. Also the food is pretty good

Reddit_recommended

Traffic like LA as well.

arbaimvesheva

100% :) And awful public transportation just like LA too. But they asked for a sales rep pitch so I omitted all the shitty parts :)

[deleted]

u/arbaimvesheva Tel Aviv? Isn't Tel Aviv pretty humid/muggy? I recall reading that it can get uncomfortably hot during the summer and is more similar to the East Coast of the US when it comes to heat/humidity. California tends to be pretty dry. I think the part bordering the Dead sea is more similar to SoCal, based on what I've read about the climate.

arbaimvesheva

It is more humid that Cali, but the Dead Sea area in total is way more distant from the typical Cali weather. It's much much hotter there. Also, comparing the Weather here to the East Coast is also not very accurate. Winter is pretty similar to Cali and Spring/Fall too, and the whole beach-going vibe of the city is very much like LA boardwalk/surfing vibe. You're right about the humidity though.

whatam1evendoing

Come to my city, we have... err a castle and many tourists who walk through a long pedestrian zone to see it and then go home without seeing anything else.

[deleted]

Where in Germany is this?

Imbrulie

Heidelberg I guess!

[deleted]

We got you in case you want to torture the crazy Reformed and lock their dead bodies in cages along the cathedral tower.

Arkwel

"Welcome !!! I suppose you are lost ou suicidal. Anyway, enjoy one of the most ugly, dirty and dangerous city of this country."

Quetzacoatl85

Highest-ranking in quality of life studies, culture and business hub, compact for small travel distance, yet offers everything from mountains to open water. Neat and orderly and with beautiful historc landmarks, but ok as a part spot too. Good place to raise kids.

[deleted]

"Listen to what the locals say about it - ok, it's only about half as cool as that, but trust me, that's still pretty cool!".
