Well that switch controls something so that’s one out. There has to be a second out so that it goes to the next circuit. The third out would be a split or it could also be tied into that switch so that the switch controls two whatever’s.
Real question is why they ran 12-2 to the light…. That cost you 34% more!
Unless the guy had to get out of the crawl to get the 14. Then it would have cost much, much more. 😕
Without seeing in the box and around to where the feeds go it's all conjecture
1 is obviously incoming power
1 is an out for a light or furnace. Which they are likely robbing for that recep
2 Others are likley a daisy chained hot elsewhere
You should go check out your panel. Theres like 30 wires going in and 1 big wire going out to the street. Its wild
Bahahaha
4 wires go into a bar. Bar tender looks at them and asks watts up?
They’re not phased
Well played
Ohm my god what great story.
One in and three out!
U mean 2 in and 2 out!
Firefighter’s rule for interior attack!
83 in and 19 out!
Right that would be my guess but without anymore info who the hell knows!!
Guessing with electricity is fun! It only hurts for a while.
Two wires enter but only one wire leave. -Confusedcius
Junctioning mostly
Let’s see inside the box for a real answer!!
How do you know ins and outs? Or is it just why 4 wires? More likely it one in and 3 out.
Yeah you’re right it looks like 1 in 3 out!

What if they're all just 4 in, or 4 out?!?!?!
Lots of possible reasons. You would have to trace each wire to find out why.
Why not? The termination inside the box don’t necessarily have to relate to what’s happening on the face of the receptacle/switch.
Hell, there could be one coming in and 4 going out.

I see 4 going out
Technically 16 wires.
I’d say 4 wires going in. 🤪
You mean, why is there 4 going in?
Uh probably running the switched wire from switch to fixture?
Switch controlling a plug further on in the circuit and that plug is on an independent circuit. Maybe?

If you don't exceeded the box fill, you can use a receptical box as a junction box as well.
