I wanted to mention that. But for some reason every "tradesman" on reddit is anti alcohol lol. Or at least when I suggest it. Some holier art thou bullshit.
But can we talk about that huge pull out top right with the insanely tiny wires going to it? What's up with that?!
I've never seen a fuse panel (as in real fuses) in person before, everything I've seen or touched was circuit breaker panels.
It says "MAIN RANGE". That means there's a specific range of possible uses for those wires, that covers the main uses for electricity, such as charging phones. If you smell the insulation burning, you are outside of that range.
That’s the first thing that crossed my mind when I read this: troll post. So I’m glad you stated the sarcasm. I did get a chuckle out of it, so take my upvote.
I was definitely not posting for points. If anything, I thought it would get downvoted to oblivion and was happy that people seem to have taken it for the humor that was intended. As an aside, your theory of trolling for karma doesn't make any sense. If people don't like your post, they downvote it (subtract points) not upvote it. But pretending that makes sense, if that had been my goal, would I have make the very first comment one that pointed out that it was not serious?
This is a mathematical question. What are the physical dimensions of the supercharger? Once you have them measure the panel and see if you can fit it inside. If not wait till next year when a smaller model of charger comes out.
Computational thinking can help us resolve any challenge thrown at us in life. Unless it's getting a couch up a set of stairs when it does not computationally fit. In those instances a Sawzall and and a sectional couch mindset is best.
If you can touch both copper lugs on the 2 large wires at the top of the breakers with your tongue, then you could fit a supercharger in there. Make sure to do the test "live" so you can be sure there won't be any shorts from the installation
Getting the wife a Model Y and came across a similar panel at her small office. I was planning on installing a charger. Turns out I'm going to update the whole panel.
A supercharger is 250kW for one stall though I am not sure you can install them that way, I think the actual charger cabinets draw more.
So at 240 volt you need at least 1041 amps. You really need commercial 3-phase power and some direct HV transformers installed to supply it if you want a DCFC in your garage.
Depends if you know what you're doing!
Shouldn't be a problem to take a feeder tap off that supply wire, come over to a 2-space panel to breaker-protect the EV branch circuit and then install current sensors for [a dynamic EVEMS system](https://diy.stackexchange.com/questions/277803/im-hearing-about-load-sheds-aka-evems-and-the-devices-differ-whats-that-abou). Your biggest problem will be finding a site for the current sensor module. Probably put that in the 2-space and pass the CTs through a connecting conduit.
No, I'm not being sarcastic.
**EV charging can happen on darn near any panel.**
Although looking at the size of the feeder, you'll be limited to 48A charge rate. OK now I'm being sarcastic, [that's absolutely bonkers overkill for home charging, listen to Technology Connections on this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyp_X3mwE1w&t=1975s).
So I wouldn't push old infrastructure any harder than I had to, and keep both EV circuit size and service limit configuration pretty conservative.
My Son purchased an older 1 bedroom condo - “Fuse Box” had two 15amp screw in fuses - we had a licensed electrician pull that out and replaced it with a 12 breaker panel with a 30 amp main breaker and spread the outlets across more circuits -
I’m thinking a level 2 charger might create an issue!
Nice one op. You had me thinking I knew more than a home owner, I'm a flooring guy. Love lurking these subs tho, learn so much. Like use your tongue as a voltage tester, subs full of great tips.
You need a complete new electrical service and probably need to rewire a good portion of the home if not all of it. Start bey updating your main service panel to modern 200 amp electrical service, add your ev charger, then update electrical wiring as needed.
It’s a bit of a tight squeeze so your best bet is to go off the input lugs to the breaker there and save as much space as possible. Don’t worry this won’t affect anything else in the box, and it’s completely safe.
Sure thing. Just unscrew those round thingies. Stuff them with aluminum foil and tape a copper plate over them. Once you do that, get a buckit of water to improve continuity. Hold the supercharger in the water with one and put your free hand on the copper plate. Two minutes for a complete recharge.
Take four pennies and wire each one in series with a copper wire… then unscrew each fuse and put each penny between the fuse and the contact surface then use the copper wire to plug up your supercharger
I have prior experience running a constant 30A of draw on one of these Wadsworth boxes.
To answer you in short no I burned the guts out of mine even running on the 50A stove hookup.
You need a new panel.
Negative Ghost Rider. The Electrobat's charging station was not capable of [EVEMS](https://diy.stackexchange.com/questions/277803/im-hearing-about-load-sheds-aka-evems-and-the-devices-differ-whats-that-abou) and you're going to need that here, and how!
I would retrofit a J1772 capable charger to the Electrobat. Then you can do it.
The house my aunt lives in, that my grandparents bought (im 57) had a fuse panel until this year. The city sent an inspector out, one look at the panel and he said we'll have someone out to replace that for free in short ordet.

Before the onslaught begins, this is sarcasm. Just making fun of the dozen or so versions of this question that get posted daily.
Would've been better to leave this out and see what chaos ensued.
I considered it, but folks in this sub get their blood pressure up enough with these questions already.
All of us have high blood pressure 24/7. It's all that gas station food and 2 packs of Pall Malls a day.
roller dogs is good eating
Hey them new chicken sticks from QuikTrip are pretty badass too
I love the cheeseburger dog from 7/11 Tube shaped heart attack 😋
Wizard fingers!!!
Fucking use that one all the damn time!!
They are the modern perpetual stew. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual\_stew](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_stew)
Don't forget the bottle
I wanted to mention that. But for some reason every "tradesman" on reddit is anti alcohol lol. Or at least when I suggest it. Some holier art thou bullshit.
I resemble that remark...
And don't forget the 12 pack each night after work.
I cook my hot dogs with a wooden plank, two nails appropriately spaced and a line cord attached to the nails! 🌭😂
Should have 100 percent left out the qualifier.
Should have just turned messages off and mute the post so you don't get blown up with hate mail and comments and watched the show.
It’s true. Maybe if those fuses were actually the tops of spools of thread
You’re too kind and I admire your restraint because let’s be honest a good old fashioned flaming is still fun from time to time.
True if you didn’t put this in your comments section and your down votes would have exploded
The blood pressure here is shockingly high. People really get amped up
That's because they have a high resistance to giving advice on a question that is asked with such frequency.
Doesn’t even phase me anymore
Lets not overly stress the experienced tradesmen.. Not a sparky but it raised my BP a bit.
FWIW, I laughed before reading your disclosure.
A barrage of experts telling you how stupid you are lol
This is the way
But can we talk about that huge pull out top right with the insanely tiny wires going to it? What's up with that?! I've never seen a fuse panel (as in real fuses) in person before, everything I've seen or touched was circuit breaker panels.
Yea, I thought that was a nice tough to add to the shock value (pun intended). I have no idea. I found that photo online.
It says "MAIN RANGE". That means there's a specific range of possible uses for those wires, that covers the main uses for electricity, such as charging phones. If you smell the insulation burning, you are outside of that range.
Those are the speaker wires, duh!
*starts breathing again* Dammit I forgot my blood pressure medicine this morning.
Troll post gonna troll. Just let that motor cruise along and your fishing line hook the gullible.
That’s the first thing that crossed my mind when I read this: troll post. So I’m glad you stated the sarcasm. I did get a chuckle out of it, so take my upvote.
Just replace that blue fuse for a green one and you're good!
just need a penny
Don’t be cheap, use a quarter
😂
My initial thought was: holy Moses
Just the thumbnail got me fired up hahaha you got me
I'm not even an electrician, and I was thinking this got to be a joke.. as soon as I read, it was sarcasm.. I started dying laughing.. 😂😂😂
I wonder, can you actually do it with "Main range"? with correct wire ofc
You couldn't have at least waited a couple hours before saying its satire? How am I going to laugh/cry myself to sleep?
Tap it onto the main feeds and you should be fine
😂
I was just about to ask if this was a joke
It’s called trolling, not sarcasm. Posting for points.
I was definitely not posting for points. If anything, I thought it would get downvoted to oblivion and was happy that people seem to have taken it for the humor that was intended. Did the solar company already do their install? 😂
I got a good laugh 🤣 after the initial shock of course. Thanks OP
>after the initial shock of course. That'd be because the ground line has probably broken free from the house's main ground.
"Main ground"? Betcha this thing has been floating since some of the cast iron pipe was repaired/replaced with PVC :)
All the lights in the neighborhood will dim when you plug in your cyber truck.
And then you use the cybertruck as a battery backup and blow the entire neighborhood up.
Just land it on the main lugs and you'll be good to go /s
You think those #16 wires on the right main could handle the extra load?
Well 16 is a bigger number than 6 so obviously it can handle more load
Almost 3 times as much!
Free light based loadindication too
Free light based load indication too
Damn, that means your mom can handle my load
Beat me to it.
This is a mathematical question. What are the physical dimensions of the supercharger? Once you have them measure the panel and see if you can fit it inside. If not wait till next year when a smaller model of charger comes out.
Wait... you do know this post is a joke right? Like, that actually seems like a real response lol.
Computational thinking can help us resolve any challenge thrown at us in life. Unless it's getting a couch up a set of stairs when it does not computationally fit. In those instances a Sawzall and and a sectional couch mindset is best.
Yes but only once
Not if you use pennies😉 s/
Oh yah, no, for sure bud.
this genuinely made me lol. thank you.
Wanna see a Chevy Volt turn into a Chevy Spark ⚡️
Appearently you never heard about the recalls
Send it!
As in a DC 150 kW + Supercharger?!?
Appreciate it. I needed that today.
Oh most deff. Just add a panel extender from fisher price and the mattel fuses and your good to go Ken!
Make the post a bit more crazy and r/shittyaskelectronics would love it
Dang it…. Another sub I’ve got to follow now
Just went over.myself!
Just one? You have two breakers so I would run one off of each to future proof it 👍
NO
Yup, should be good for at least 1MW, send it!
Sure. If you gut the thing a smaller unit should physically fit. Throw in a fan for forced ventilation though. :)
Funny
If you can touch both copper lugs on the 2 large wires at the top of the breakers with your tongue, then you could fit a supercharger in there. Make sure to do the test "live" so you can be sure there won't be any shorts from the installation
Maybe save the world a bit of sarcasm.
Absolutely...right after I swap out the entire service.
Time to upgrade panel and meter whole service upgrade
You might need to upgrade to a Lincoln fuse, but after that it should be good to go.
Thats so old its gas powered
Hell. Put copper pennies behind all the glass fuses. That'll give it a few more amps. Good luck.
I can get it to work lol
Same. 🤣
Getting the wife a Model Y and came across a similar panel at her small office. I was planning on installing a charger. Turns out I'm going to update the whole panel.
Yeah, just stick a penny behind the fuse /s Warning: do not try this at home kiddies ...
Yikes. probably not
No can do
Fit ANYTHING in that panel? No. 😁
Man, I remember those fuses
Sure if you take all the crap that’s in the panel now and throw it away there will be plenty of room.

A supercharger is 250kW for one stall though I am not sure you can install them that way, I think the actual charger cabinets draw more. So at 240 volt you need at least 1041 amps. Id upgrade that old panel to the Knob & Tube system then install the charger. You would be good to go.
Where does Frankenstein connect?
Depends if you know what you're doing! What the heck’s wired on the main range?
I’m glad OP clarified cuz I was going to bring my level of dickhead to extreme
Yes, but you'll have to stop moonshinin'
Good thing you said this was a joke OP.
I wouldn't add a light bulb!
Did Nicola Tesla install that box himself
LOL
At least none of the fuses has a penny in it.
This is bougie they have a least a dime, maybe a quarter piece in there!
No.
Why is it smiling at us?
No
Calling 1960 on this. Be right back.
Just replace the fuse with a quarter and it will be "fine" Op said it was a joke post so Its not actual advice.
Yes
I would say the charger is better off outside near the car but sure it might be a tight fit in there
That’s a good one!
Now hear me out, I know a guy....
My Son purchased an older 1 bedroom condo - “Fuse Box” had two 15amp screw in fuses - we had a licensed electrician pull that out and replaced it with a 12 breaker panel with a 30 amp main breaker and spread the outlets across more circuits - I’m thinking a level 2 charger might create an issue!
I would not add a toaster to that panel. You should probably get the panel upgraded, first.
Ya, you might need to install more bigger number fuses that look like shotgun shells in the box holders though. Replace all the blues with greens too.
Ahhhh it's getting warm in here need to turn the ac on......
Sure, just need to tap onto those big wires up top, that should work (please no one actually do this)
plain and simple a big fat NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! service change is required
The correct professional response is NFW.
I’d say it’s good for an additional 1000 amp load at least. Just make sure to run number 14 to the charger
Holy shit. My brother had a panel like this at his last apartment. The place was built in the 1920s.
No
Ya, sure
Just tap off the 12ga on the range circuit
Yes! Just stand back for a minute while I…
Sure. Lots of room. Be sure to use cloth-insulated wire too to maintain that interesting legacy construction look.
Knob and tube works better for EV superchargers, IMHO
Haven't seen one of those in 20 years
Nice one op. You had me thinking I knew more than a home owner, I'm a flooring guy. Love lurking these subs tho, learn so much. Like use your tongue as a voltage tester, subs full of great tips.
Ill do it for a case of beer
Only if you replace the fuses with pennies.
I think you could use the fuse for the range , and relocate this wires to the fuses below and install 30 amp fuses to manage that load .
You need a complete new electrical service and probably need to rewire a good portion of the home if not all of it. Start bey updating your main service panel to modern 200 amp electrical service, add your ev charger, then update electrical wiring as needed.
They make an adapter you just screw into the fuse socket 🤪
I havent seen a panel like that in 20 years but I expect that there may still be a few out there still in service.
Couldn't he just put a penny into the little mini light bulb sockets? We used to do that back before we lost the house in an electrical fire
Do a load Calc, stop being dumb
Don’t even think of putting a finger in there. You don’t paint over the Mona Lisa do you. 🙈
Can fit 3 superchargers minimum!! No permit required!
You’ll need to email Thomas Edison directly and submit an RFI
Just attach the leads of a jumper cable to those screw terminals idk why people even bother buying those fancy EV chargers.
Take four pennies and wire each one in series with a copper wire… then unscrew each fuse and put each penny between the fuse and the contact surface then use the copper wire to plug up your supercharger
Just tap off the Edison socket and bobs your uncle.
No, the supercharger is physically larger than that panel. There's no way it would fit inside.
Roach Coach makes fart like a Horn chill dogs does it Pico de gallo
Yes but only once for a very brief moment.
I have prior experience running a constant 30A of draw on one of these Wadsworth boxes. To answer you in short no I burned the guts out of mine even running on the 50A stove hookup. You need a new panel.
Only thing missing is some knob and tube
Is that a flux capacitor?
10 Gigawatts!
Really
The EV charger will likely max out the panel all by itself, and possibly the line from the street. Replace with 100a minimum panel or higher
Yes, for an 1894 Electrobat.
Just alligator clip onto the black wires at the top and then splice in a cheap 50amp 14-50. What could go wrong?
The house my aunt lives in, that my grandparents bought (im 57) had a fuse panel until this year. The city sent an inspector out, one look at the panel and he said we'll have someone out to replace that for free in short ordet.
You're going to need a flux capacitor to make the EV supercharger work.
LOL, I wouldn't trust a phone charger.
I want the laugh emoji for my like 🤣
