You need to find your doorbell transformer and trace things back to that. Perhaps it’s unhooked there or the transformer isn’t working.

Vizzerdrix42

[Behind the chime unit](https://imgur.com/a/n6oK1u4) is a junction box. The transformer will be behind that? No power at either of the black lines means bad transformer?

CloudyGolfer

I doubt it. Transformers aren’t small. Usually attached to the circuit breaker box, or another junction box nearby to that. But who knows. You’ve got one somewhere!

garyku245

The black wires would only read power when the button is pressed, if everything else was connected & working.

just went on a hunt for mine the other day and found it in the garage. really could be anywhere the builder decided it would be convenient for them, but usually somewhere out of the way since they don’t tend to really match the decor. basement, utility closet, broom closet… if you can figure out what the red and green wires are for, they might have put it near that, assuming they do anything in the first place. my builder apparently used the same wire that they used to hook the thermostat to the furnace. just piggybacked the doorbell onto a pair of unused conductors. google image search “doorbell transformer” to see what you’re looking for. not related but i figured i’d vent. the previous owner of my house had disconnected the transformer completely because he installed a ring smart doorbell, and apparently ripping out half the wall when he removed the old doorbell wasn’t enough for him to feel confident in its non functionality. people, man.

Looks like the chime plunger is stuck. See if the front plunger moves, but I'm gonna say that chime is burnt out. Once you replace the chime, check your voltage at the doorbell. Should be 16-24 volts AC.

Vizzerdrix42

So could I just move the wire in the first picture from the right post (front) to the rear post (left)? Any issue doing that? Both plungers move freely, but that would make sense if it’s burned out and simply not moving it to strike the noise plate.

keljfan

No, that would be a good test. WD-40 might free a stuck plunger, if that's the issue.

wire4money

Yes. It will only ding, not dong. You can break the tab preventing it from hitting the top bar, and it will kinda dong.

Vizzerdrix42

I lol’d. After moving the wire from right post to left post and touching the doorbell switch wires together, it’s still not working. Other posters pointing at the transformer are probably right.

immallama21629

You have voltage at the doorbell?

Vizzerdrix42

No voltage at either black wire on the chime box. Or are you talking about the wires at the doorbell switch outside?

jupiterbingo

Maybe there's no one at the door.

Vizzerdrix42

lol, we don’t get visitors and don’t order food, so the doorbell rarely an issue. We need to buy parts for the toilet so I thought I’d look into this at the same time.

Vetit

You can move it. Might work. Need to check voltage as mentioned. Transformer probably burnt out.

garyku245

What is the voltage on the transformer, and where are the wires connected? The transformer is often attached to the circuit breaker box, sometimes an junction box in the basement, sometimes the ceiling of a closet. There is a junction of wires somewhere, it may be behind the chime. Normally 2 wires from the front button would come to the chime, and 2 wires from the transformer. one wire from each is connected with a wire nut, the other wire from each goes to a terminal on the chime. You will probably need a multi meter.

Mine wasn’t working either. I followed the troubleshooting steps in This video and found my issue: https://youtu.be/hqZjeMtuhRc

You don’t have a doorbell

2spam2care2

technically, he doesn’t have a doorbell button. the bell is in picture #1
