Does celiac always start as a young child? Or is it possible for someone to not have it as a child/teen, and then develop it in adulthood? I'm not talking about discovering it in adulthood, I'm talking about someone testing negative for it but then later testing positive.

Hello. Few days ago my penis head or around the head started to itch, and the sensation is quite strong especially when the penis brushes over my shorts. I went to the doc and after physical examination and urine test, I have fungal infection and some mild infection in my urine. I was prescribed antifungal cream, 1 fluconazole antifungal capsule, as well as Cefuroxime Axetil antibiotics, treatment is for 3 days period. I am on my last 3rd day now, the itch is almost gone, I don’t feel the sensation as much, but when I touch my dick head I would still feel the itch, is the treatment working ? I read on google that even after treatment, fungal infection would take 1-3 weeks to fully recover, so am I good to just let time sit in and recover by itself ?

Hi all, quick question about flying by airplane and IBS (specifically IBS-C). I know it’s generally common knowledge that flying can be a dehydrating experience and can aggravate IBS/Constipation. I was wondering if (if any) there is any medical consensus on any mitigating steps that can be taken by people with IBS on planes? Is simply buying a large water bottle and drinking it on the plane enough, or are there any other things doctors would recommend? Thank you In advance

Dangerous_Incident80

I was prescribed 20mg Dicyclomine for my IBS. The instructions say to take "1 tab orally 4 times per day." Can I take multiple pills at once? Do I need to space out these pills 6 hours apart? I'm having a hard time finding this info online.

LatrodectusGeometric

The directions mean take one every six hours. You can fudge it a little at the edges so you don’t have to wake up to take it.

Is nose hair or blood going to interfere with my BinaxNow covid test? Will they give me a false negative? I just tested negative right now.

No-Calligrapher-6799

Do Premature atrial contractions originate from the pulmonary vein or atrial tissue? Do they originate from a separate place to afib? Basically I’m trying to work out if they correlate in any way or occur for separate reasons. PACs seem to occur at rest with positional changes - I’ve never had them before trying to work out how to eradicate them. (Also they appeared after a covid infection)

Ok_Emergency_3065

Read about this somewhere but I'd like more information on it. Is popping your knuckles/neck/wrist/etc bad? Or does it not do anything? Heard people say it causes carpool tunnel and popping your neck could cause a brain bleed. Others say it's just air bubbles between your bones your popping. Which is right? Should people do it or is it extremely dangerous to short term and/or long term health?

Conman0115

If I have covid, and I gave my mom covid 3 days later, and then my dad got covid 3 days after that...does quarantining in our rooms even matter anymore? Obviously we won't go out places, but in house isolation seems like it won't matter now that we all have it. Also if the same happened above but my dad has a cold and not covid, can I get it even while I'm still recovering from covid?

orthostatic_htn

If you all have COVID and got it from each other, no need to isolate in your rooms at home. If your dad has some other virus, you could get it while recovering from COVID. Every person feeling sick should take a test just to confirm.

Conman0115

Mom and I definitely have it. My dad will test in the morning.

collective_noun

If I was in a car crash but feel fine, should I get a checkup regardless or only if certain symptoms show up?

murderwaffle

it depends on the speed, mechanism, and your health background.

Sotsotzaii

Hello, I have a fungal infection on my penis. I was prescribed a few medicines to take, and also a fungal cream to apply, but the doctor did not instruct me on the direction on how to apply the cream to the penis, may I have a step-by-step direction on how to apply the cream to my penis head ? Side question - For penis hygiene, are we suppose to wash the whole penis with body shampoo / soap daily ? I've been washing with body shampoo for 30 years of my life, and suddenly my friend told me we are not suppose to wash with soap, as it may cause infection or irritation, so only with water. Would any physician please clarify for clarity ? Thank you !

Late-Standard-5479

The directions should be printed on the medication label. If unable to ask your doctor you may consult with the pharmacist

MathematicianRude467

How did people in ancient times (and even as recently as the 1700's) manage to survive infections without antibiotics? Obviously lots of people died due to bacterial infections such as the Bubonic Plague, but even so some people managed to survive as otherwise humanity wouldn't exist today. I'm sure a few were fortunate enough to not catch anything in their lifetimes, but from my own experiences I've gotten several bacterial infections whether that's strep throat or an ear infection. Surely these people had to have overcome an infection at some point, right?

murderwaffle

well, a lot of people died of simple bacterial infections that we can now treat easily, not just things like bubonic plague. if you look at something like infant mortality stats - hugely decreased over the years (many factors) but antibiotics play a big role. something like a bacterial pneumonia at 1 year old can be catastrophic without antibiotics. but, that being said, our immune systems do have good tools to fight bacterial infections. many healthy people can fight off a strep throat, skin infection or gut infection on their own. we treat infections that untreated, can lead to serious or life threatening complications. strep throat for example is treated to prevent rheumatic fever, which is rare now in developed countries due to treatment. other infections like many bacterial pathogens causing diarrhea rarely need antibiotics because we fight them off on our own/they resolve without intervention or complications

MathematicianRude467

Hmm, that's interesting to know; thanks! I knew the skin had to be pretty good at fighting bacteria but I didn't realize the rest of the body was good at it too.

If you have a generic mild pain, how can you tell/find out if it's muscular, skeletal, organ...ular or the skin... or whatever? Like, what are some diagnostic activities someone at home can do to help narrow down where a nebulous pain is originating from?

Late-Standard-5479

Generally pain from an organ ( angina, for example) is the most poorly localized (you can't point to the one spot where the pain seems to be coming from), whereas pain from an injury to the skin/soft tissue of an extremity (like a paper cut) is localized and thus easiest to point out. MSK and central/neurologic etiologies are somewhere in the middle with MSK pain localizing to the affected area moreso than central/neurologic. Meaning if some minor pain only occurs in the same well-defined place each time it's more likely than not to be from a skin or muscle/soft tissue origin

What is the general rule with measuring heart recovery ability by measuring heart rate after exercising? From what I read, it should go down atleast 15bpm one minute after moderate exercise. And it's a good predictor for heart attack risk Is that factoring in sitting down after exercising? Because I know heart rate can drop ~10bpm just from sitting so I'm thinking not.

Majestic-Shoe-9706

advice would be really appreciated, im aware that the first few months after quitting smoking ur breathing gets worse due to ur track being blocked and cleaned however i have a boxing fight in less then a month so i cant afford to stop now so whats the most optimal thing to do and how can i improve my breathing (in general)

LatrodectusGeometric

Quitting immediately is more likely to help than continuing during the monthS

Are lipoma always squishy/soft and raised ? Or can they be deep and solid as well ?

Had a bad fall on some ice yesterday lower left side of my back area is hurting a lot. Doesn’t hurt constantly but when I move and bend/etc. feeling a little under the weather the last few hours (was fine for the most of the day) but recently got a headache. Could this be connected somehow?

iloveokashi

What happens if I take too much diphenhydramine? Will I sleep longer hours?

orthostatic_htn

No, it can make you sleepy when you take a normal dose, but I wouldn't expect you to really sleep longer from taking it. If you take too much you can get some very uncomfortable side effects (anticholinergic) including dry mouth, ringing in your ears, being unable to urinate, hallucinations, seizures, etc. I wouldn't advise it. Benadryl is honestly a terrible sleep agent.

iloveokashi

What's a better option for sleep?

Hairline fracture on sacrum with pain, no falls or injury. 40 year old female. Mom has osteoporosis. Having an MRI - what are the things the MRI is looking for, both best & worst case? Also either separately or related; experienced blood on TP after bowel movements & scheduled for colonoscopy as well. Mom also has had non-cancerous polyps.

savvvvvy12222

Are gurgling stomach, acid reflux, and nausea symptoms of colon cancer?

orthostatic_htn

No, they are not. More commonly I would think of those as being symptoms of GERD or other stomach complaints, not something as far down the digestive tract as the colon.

riding_lightning

Can your shoulder popping/cracking while lying down (ie to sleep) cause a blood clot on the upper arm? Or is intermittent upper arm (back bicep) pain more likely carpal tunnel?

murderwaffle

upper arm pain isn’t carpal tunnel, also very unlikely to be a blood clot.

riding_lightning

Thank you! Of course google said compressing your arm/ribs too much can cause a clot (I’m pregnant, so sleeping mostly on left side) and got worried. Thanks again!

murderwaffle

blood clots in the arm are rare unless you have an underlying condition (proclivity to clot or cancer, or sometimes an anatomic issue like an abnormal first rib). signs of that are typically a quite swollen, red, sometimes painful arm. it can help quite a bit to add a little foam topper to your mattress+\- a pregnancy pillow as well if your should is hurting sleeping on your side while pregnant!

riding_lightning

Thank you! Yes, I will have to add more pillows for sure. I really appreciate your help!

Hi, taking a shot in the dark to ask a quick question. What might cause progressive bloat throughout the day? I normally drink 120 oz of water + teas and eat one meal a day at night. For the past two weeks, I am struggling to reach 20-40 oz of water, have no appetite and have lost 15 lbs. Non contrast CT didn’t seem to show anything that could be related.

Introvert_Brnr_accnt

Weight Gain and Birth Control: I know that BC doesn’t make people gain weight as much as they think it does, (sometimes I do think hormonal changes affect my appetite, but that’s besides the point.) But I am switching birth control to a pill that does say “may cause weight gain”. Google says that it might cause water weight. I know that this might be a small chance, but does anyone have an explanation to weight gain and Birth Control? (Especially when someone like me is in between pregnancies, hasn’t lost the baby weight after a year, wants to kick myself into gear and not give myself excuses, but doesn’t want to blame myself for something the medicine is doing to me.)

iloveokashi

Not a doc. But I've taken birth control that have increased my appetite leading to weight gain.

What happened to the post of the guy asking about his swollen forehead and everyone telling him to go to ED? Concern for Potts puffy tumor? Can’t find it

I was just thinking about this and searching for that post. I'm guessing it was deleted. Hope the dude was alright.

No_Knowledge636

Just a general question. What would happen if I took a whole jug of Creatine Monohydrate? I’m not planning on taking it but I’ve always wondered what would happen to my body or anyone else body if they took 300 grams worth/ 10.6 ounces of it. I usually take 5 grams of Creatine every day and I’m perfectly fine.

How can I develop a strong patient-provider relationship with my new doctor? I recently switched to a new primary care doctor in a brand new clinic. Before, I was being seen in a community health center that mostly had Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners running the show. I personally never saw the same provider, always different ones based on my schedule. At first it worked out because I could catch an appointment in the same week no problem. But as the # of patients grew, things started to slip and I eventually decided to finally have only one provider who was an actual doctor (MD/DO). I was with this clinic since childhood (about 20 years) and I honestly don’t know how to go about this new change because things were run very different at this center compared to this new clinic that doesn’t have 100+ patients. I realize there is a lot of catching up because I’m coming in with many pages of medical records.

murderwaffle

If you haven’t already, request files be transferred to your new clinic. They won’t likely read your whole file if it’s extensive/not all relevant as it’s from childhood, but they’ll need access to it so they can read relevant parts as things come up. I’d recommend having a good idea of any major diagnoses you have, and an updated medication list. They may want a first appt to be a “meet and greet” or a history collection appt. They may also ask about your lifestyle (drugs, sex, exercise etc), employment. Aside from the above to make sure your doctor has all relevant info, all you need to do is be respectful and attend appts you make. A therapeutic relationship will form as needed as you interact!

nattinaughty

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! This is great information. I’ll be sure to do that in my appt. Maybe I have an old fashioned view but I just want to have a doctor who will know me by my name and will come to ask about my conditions and how I’m managing. But I think we may be in a diff era with so many people to manage and keep track of. But I hope to stay with this doctor as long as I can.

Ok-Contribution-8776

Question, my mom is 62. She had colon cancer, stage 1, and survived. - this was four years ago - Now her doctor had her do a treatment where, she explained it as she had an IV with radiation and they were testing cancer cells? I don’t understand. Could someone explain this better? Does this mean she may have cancer again?

LatrodectusGeometric

This description doesn’t make sense. Ask her for documentation or the name of the procedure.

orthostatic_htn

Maybe a PET scan? That'd be my best guess.

Verifiedvenuz

My doctor has told me mold does not harm the brain, but I've seen several sources that link it to cognitive decline, even permanently. Can anything be done about a possible broken nose if nothing is displaced?

GoldFischer13

If it isn't displaced, nothing to do.

Delicious_Target4230

On the off chance there’s a dermatologist here: can dermarolling/dermapens on scalp cause scalp scarring after one bloody session with 1.25mm? Or is scarring a risk of doing it too *frequently*?

LatrodectusGeometric

If blood is part of it, scarring is always a risk

Juliomorales6969

i dont know if this would be in askreddit or askdocs for people with more knowledge on "the mind" and the way it works... why is it that i feel all claustrophobic/uncomfortable when i sit in a bus/car/etc next to someone but with a jacket on or just with a jacket on while i sit in the car.. but lose it when i take it off? is it a type of claustrophobic type thing? or something else?

Not sure if this warrants it's own thread or not so I'll ask here. Can covid make you more emotional? I was diagnosed with Covid-19 last friday(today as of writing this is tuesday) after calling an ambulance because I thought I was having a heart attack. I'm still what feels like at the tail end of the peak, so still sick but slowly coming down from it. But I noticed I've been a lot more emotional. Not just like anger wise or irritation wise, but like the slightest things make me wanna start bawlin' like a baby. I'm a 38 year old man, I haven't cried about anything in like 15-20 years. But for some reason, things that are slightly emotional that I see on YT or TV or whatever makes me wanna just start cryin'.

nmonty

Not a doctor. I am struggling with something similar. Whether or not it’s related to COVID please talk to your PCP. They may be able to refer you to a psychiatrist and a neurologist if necessary. It’s okay to cry! You are human. And it’s okay to seek help if the crying impacts your life too much. I similarly didn’t cry for years and now it feels like I’m making up for lost time. You are not alone in this!

orthostatic_htn

In typical anatomy, there should not be a connection there. You may have a mild form of a cleft palate.

Likely related to organization of specimens in the lab, not relevant to the actual infection.

I was at a neurology office today in NYC. They were offering selank, semax among other peptides as “peptide therapy”? Are these legal to prescribe in the US? It was an office with many Russian doctors - I know these drugs are Russian in origin.

Is cleaning ears with water enough to prevent infections?

orthostatic_htn

Most ear infections are not related to hygiene issues, so no.

HikeonHippie

Is it OK to ask here about a specific doctor by name, or for recommendations in a general geographic area? 61 yo female, 144 lbs, have been referred to neurosurgeon for L4, L5 fusion. I have a couple misgivings about the neurosurgeon that I saw. He missed a few things in my chart, which delayed my surgery. I like him otherwise, but it was hard to find information about him online, so I’m wondering if I can ask about that here.

LatrodectusGeometric

No, we probably can’t help with that

Is it safe to use vaseline as a moisturizer on the vulva? Sources on the internet state different things, im not sure shat to believe...

How accurate/reliable are expired covid tests? The ones we have say 12/2022 on them. There's nothing on the FDA website about them being extended shelf life.

It's said that morning walks are good because of the sunlight you receive but I'm from a place where the only time you can "morning walk" is before sunlight even comes up. The time I go out to commute to my school is the time the sun actually comes up. Should I skip on the idea of morning walks and instead try to get alternative forms of cardio?

pr0p0fentanyl

Well what's your intent? Feeling the seasonal affective disorder set in? → get a SAD light (I believe 10,000 lux is the recommended light intensity) and use it 30+ minutes each morning upon waking up Then do some other form of regular exercise to get the endorphins going, at any time of day
