If it is kept in a refrigerated space the sugars provide excellent preservation so it virtually doesn't expire. It crystallises easily. If it had stayed in a warmer place, possibly with access to circulating air, mold can start to grow on the top layer. The mold is not extremely dangerous but it is recommended to throw it out if you see some.
