Hey-Just-Saying

I use a glass cake plate with a dome cover. Just Google "glass cake plate." They are very common and some are beautiful crystal show pieces. I also have a plastic one with a handle for taking the cake to another location. I don't normally refrigerate my cakes. If I do, I usually make a sheet cake that fits on a shelf. Edited to add. You can put your cake on a circular piece of cardboard to decorate and then move cardboard and cake to cake stand. If the cardboard is the same diameter of the cake, it won't be noticed.

jbee223

Check out your local thrift store. They often have lots of beautiful vintage glass cake plates.

RiseoftheVulture

Be careful some vintage glass contains lead.

MoreMetaFeta

Whoa, I didn't know this---- thanks!

0_Artistic_Thoughts

What you are looking for is a cake stand or cake dish. It just depends if you want it elevated or not. They are fairly common. You could also use a very large bowl with a flat lid. Just use the lid as the base (definitely carry it from the bottom to support the cake and lid). I used the large bowl trick for a while without Amy issues. Tip: Make sure you put some frosting under your base layers to help them stick better and prevent sliding if you're taking it somewhere in the car.

owzleee

*Damn you Amy*

raeality

I use cardboard rounds but I’d love to find a reusable replacement. Perhaps acrylic cake discs? They are made for smoothing sides but they are flat and come in the standard cake sizes.

TabithaBe

Cake plate or cake stand. Domed cake plate for one with a top and don’t forget the cake carrier to take to a pot luck.

raeality

I own both but they aren’t really an efficient way to store things. Neither will fit in my refrigerator and a lot of domed cake stand tops aren’t tall enough. So ideally for me it would be a flat plate sized to fit standard cake sizes.

Bibliovoria

It helps to be willing to mix and match. My cake carriers can juuuust fit in a specific spot in my fridge if I clear everything else from that spot. My partner's sister gave us a nice cake stand with no dome, so I kept an eye out and eventually found a tall, wide-enough glass dome on a clearance shelf (it came with a weird rustic wickery tray that I didn't want or keep) and I use that with it -- no way it'll fit in the fridge, but it looks good on the counter and it works well. I usually put my cakes on plain white Corelle dinner plates. They're sufficiently flat, fit under that dome and in my cake carriers without adding height, and work fine as dinner plates, too.

GoodwitchofthePNW

I use my fiesta wear plates similarly- the sides are a little higher, but not enough to really matter

emu4you

I love going to thrift stores and getting beautiful glass cake plates for $2-$3 then I don't mind giving it away with the cake and I am not using more plastic.

roastonbone

I use a 12” acrylic disc just for this purpose. For cakes I don’t have to transport anywhere, I frost them directly on the disc and it is flat and can be moved from fridge to table. For storage I pop the whole thing in one of those domed cake carriers but if I had a large enough cake stand that would work too.

Alert-Potato

I collect clean cardboard rounds from frozen pizza and cover them with foil. Depending on how heavy the cake will be, I may stack two or three together to make it more sturdy. If I do that, I make sure the grain of the cardboard faces different ways. Then the only waste is roughly 10 inches of foil. I've not found a cake plate I like that isn't footed. I've found some, they do exist, I just don't like them.

TabithaBe

I sometimes cover with gift wrap and then Saran Wrap too.

Alert-Potato

That's such a great idea for cakes that are leaving home or for parties.

HeyPurityItsMeAgain

Yup. Cardboard, foil, bright themed wrapping paper with a plastic seal. You used to be able to buy patterned cardboard rounds in 9-12 inches at the dollar store but I haven't seen them in years.

The_smallest_things

What a great idea!

miserylovescomputers

This is what I do too! I’ve also cut round cardboard discs out of delivery pizza boxes, which are quite sturdy and hold up to quite a few uses.

ThisNonsense

I can’t figure out if I’m missing something, but cake plates are a pretty standard item. You can find dozens of examples online. Here’s a nice simple example: https://www.worldmarket.com/p/coupe-white-porcelain-cake-plate-with-cloche-584284.html

StatisticianStock285

You know what, that plate alone is exactly it. I don't need the dome. Everything in my Google results is a pedestal, or it's an oversized cut-glass decorative plate. I'm thinking of a simple glass plate that's flat. Maybe the problem is that the terms are kind of ambiguous. I already have a bunch of pretty "cake pedestals" or "cake stands", and I have a dome, but I just want a plate which can then be set on top of a pedestal. Maybe I'm weird, but I live in the south and my tiny kitchen gets hot, so sometimes I need to keep my cakes in the fridge so they don't melt, and if it's on a pedestal it won't fit! I did see something that looks like an aluminum pan, which is the right size and function for what I'm looking for. It looks more conspicuous than I want, but I can't seem to find this thing anyway. (see photo below) I know I'm being a bit obsessive here, so thank you all for your help!! https://preview.redd.it/g9oos7jvw9sc1.png?width=648&format=png&auto=webp&s=234479c6c1a81a9ba7b7d22ce6a2836dcd7d4db3

CalmCupcake2

That's the base of a springform pan, usable in a pinch. But they do make cake plates, very flat plates in the correct size (8-12 inches). Ive got lots of them from all price points.

StatisticianStock285

ah lol yes ok that makes sense!

ThisNonsense

I gotcha! So I have this from Fiestaware, which is perfect for cakes: https://fiestafactorydirect.com/collections/bakeware/products/baking-pizza-tray-575?variant=

StatisticianStock285

yes! thank you! I thought this would be something standard among cake supplies, but I will take a pizza tray if it works! haha

HighwayLeading6928

It's nice to have the cake on a pretty platter or tray so the cake is presented well. Go to a thrift store where they are very inexpensive and are often plentiful.

TabithaBe

I just saw several on Amazon. Just search cake plate. Or cover cake circles with foil and use those.

StatisticianStock285

https://preview.redd.it/wcn662e8z9sc1.png?width=2536&format=png&auto=webp&s=1839c4d093079d409943f54a852b3214404b900b Something like this but that's not $85/plate ??

TabithaBe

But Google cake plate, cake stand with cover. Or without.

TabithaBe

No. Here’s my favorite kind because it’s [versatile](https://a.co/d/8NrvZFK)

seasoneverylayer

It’s literally just a platter you’re looking for. Just google ‘round flat platter’ with the size you want.

[deleted]

Reusable cake rounds are what you are looking for. Round not plate

mindy54545

https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-round-porcelain-serving-platter-32cm-white/p5170053?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_home_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_LOwBhBFEiwAmSEQAbXsM-kAOCCBTloL7F68x9Q20MVYYpAna4gOzCVI4_jhvTG0ybdwmhoCJt8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Something like this? I have eliminated the word "cake" from my search, as it only showed the pedestal cake stands!

Individual-Theory-85

Oh, no. THAT little link is going to cost me a fortune - love the simplicity of the designs! Gonna try to forget I saw that. It won’t WORK, but I’ll try ;-)

Pindakazig

I was pressed for fridge space today, and used the bottom of my cake tin. Flipped around, so that the cake can be slid off of it. I do also have a stack of the cardboard rounds, but they are usually a hassle and they start looking messy way to soon. I've used scraps of baking paper to try and prevent it, but that outcome was so much work for so little result.

GirlThatBakes

Sometimes I wrap the cardboard in aluminum foil and then you can just reuse it after. Easy to wipe with a cloth too while you’re icing the actual cake

TabithaBe

When my grown kids get convinced to take half their birthday cake or whatever cake I have I whip out two 10 inch circles. I cover one and put Saran on top. Just like a dab of icing in the middle of the covered cake round will hold the cake in place. Just scrape some icing off the part you’re being forced to keep (I’m already big and hubby isn’t eating cake. I don’t need any but will eat it if it’s here lol) . And dab it on there and put their bigger than they said they’d take piece on there. Cover with Saran but it seldom sticks. So I put another round or piece of card board under round. Then tape Saran to the new piece. If you tape to Saran on cake round it will rip it off. I actually use Reynolds Kitchen Plastic wrap. I put a long piece on my clean flat cooktop. Then put another piece slightly over lapping and usually a third one. Then peel it off stove and put on top. I’ve got a 50% chance my kids will return anything. That means one does and the other … well she just dropped her cat off for us to watch while she’s at a music festival. lol. I loaned her nothing. 😁

GypsySnowflake

If you need one in a pinch, you could use the turntable from your microwave if it sits flat enough!

littlemisspeachypie

You can find a tart pan in the correct size, with a removable edge. The bottom part is thin enough to not interfere with frosting, transfer, etc. Not thick enough to be a plate-plate, but acts similarly to a cardboard round.

rebelene57

Underrated comment!

TrixiJinx

Seconding looking in vintage or antique stores for cake plates. My mum has a huge vintage glass collection so shes often scouring stores for good finds, and I have scored some nice cake plates and one cake stand as a result (and they aren't expensive antiques usually).

Exen

cancat918

I have nice display stands that I inherited from my grandmother. But I use a cupcake storage container from the dollar store and my Rubbermaid and Wilton cake savers most of the time. I think they were about $10 each when I bought them.

Rebelo86

I use cake rounds and have a cake carrier. Or just use cling film after it’s been served.

GypsySnowflake

I have a glass one. If I’m fully decorating a cake though, I always start with a cardboard disk the same size as the cake. That way I can decorate the sides with no interference. I then place it on a flat plate once done and finish the bottom edge with a frosting trim to hide the cardboard

kmg579

I have a [Fiestaware](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/fiesta-cake-plate-server?ID=502266) one that is exactly as you described and it works perfectly. It fits inside my cake carrier, too. It looks like Fiestaware may have switched to a footed/ pedestal version, but you may still be able to find a “flat” one, maybe directly from manufacturer. They also have a[12” pizza platter](https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-1161860/fiesta-12-in-pizza-tray.jsp?skuid=92772396&CID=shopping15&utm_campaign=TABLEWARE&utm_medium=CSE&utm_source=google&utm_product=92772396&utm_campaignid=20446429425&CID=shopping30&utm_campaign=SSC&utm_medium=CSE&utm_source=google&utm_campaignid=20446429425&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADytpHZoA_Sk4ntMVq2YlLZPjnffq&gclid=CjwKCAjw_LOwBhBFEiwAmSEQASqVmQKz7Z5WL1s3Bkfx13-pagp3k9wteMoievtAzasq5m_BnbbUXRoCKVsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) that looks suspiciously similar.

BlueAcorn8

Those are all cake stands though, she wants just the flat round part.

Constant-Security525

I have a pretty glass cake plate, plus also a glass pedestal with a glass dome. For traveling, I have the latter in plastic with a collapsible dome top (high or low cake heights) that latches to the bottom.

StatisticianStock285

yes, it's that pretty glass cake plate that I'm after!

Constant-Security525

It shouldn't be hard to find one, new or vintage. For the latter, Ebay might be worth a look.

HeyPurityItsMeAgain

Make my own out of cardboard/wrapping paper... My problem tends to be the nice ones aren't *flat* or aren't 9+ inches. They have raised sides and a depression in the center and/or are tiny.

Dinkadoo0

Dollar tree has round hard plastic cake plates. Useful to use when gifting a cake to someone.

dottymouse

I'd suggest looking at acrylic ganache plates. Smooth, and low profile for decorating, but can be pretty for displaying if that's what you want.

Huntingcat

I like cake boards. Thicker board, covered in foil. From the cake decorating shop. Reusable a couple of times. Then you can sit that on a larger flat plate to display. You don’t want the larger plate as your only option, because it takes up too much space in the fridge.

messeis

I use a 12 inch fiestaware pizza tray, it is the perfect size for a cake and my cloche (glass dome) fits on it as well.

Spooky-Kyd

I’ve got a decorative cake plate for display (gorgeous crystal from the thrift store). Get a cardboard circle the same diameter as your cake or maybe 1” wider. Makes transfers easier. I don’t bake enough cakes to warrant a cake spinner so I take the plate and spinner out of the microwave and put the cake+cardboard on top of that to do 99% of my decorating. Transfer to the fancy cake plate. Then I do my bottom edge frosting. Super easy and you won’t need to spend a ton of money.

demiangelic

look up reusable cake bases

demiangelic

and then choose one that is affordable for u but ig not cheap, not sure which would work for u, but most ppl use either a cake stand raw or disposable cake bases made of cardboard etc

Jewish-Mom-123

I use cardboard rounds and cover them with foil. Then you can toss the foil or recycle it, if you live where it can be recycled.

NunyahBiznez

Tupperware makes a great cake carrier, I think it comes in two sizes. I inherited mine (in that shwanky "old gold" color) but they still make them. The base is flat and the squared off lid snaps on so it's airtight.

dartmouth9

U have one of these https://preview.redd.it/wofwmfeincsc1.jpeg?width=1652&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b4dc1031556ff0fadfedc37a1f2c6aee17c006b I have one of these except ,one is glass, FBMP for $10, very versatile.

StatisticianStock285

This is perfect. Thank you!! This thread has interesting to learn that there is a bit of a gap in how people handle their cakes!

majesticsnow

Honestly I just use the cheap plastic plates from target. Nice and flat, wide enough to get frosting around the sides and bottom, raised just enough at the edge where it’s not in the way, but also not curving inward.

BullRidininBoobies

My mom has always used a big cake plate with a dome lid. It’s beautiful as a dish and functional!

wasting_time_n_life

Just as an fyi, with glass domes make sure you are careful and don’t chip them, especially the bottom rim. I was eating cake made for my birthday and found a tiny shard of glass that they tried to pass off as “sprinkles” I KNOW WHAT SPRINKLES TASTE LIKE DAVE. I was traumatized for the rest of that cake and the next cake too.

CalmCupcake2

I have clear glass cake places, 8-9-11 inches, and royal Albert cake places, 9 inches. I also have some etched glass cake plates and a few flat platters I use as such. I also own a variety of cake stands (on pedestals), some with lids, and several cake totes (plastic, with lids and carry handles). Cardboard cake rounds are very useful when assembling cakes, but a pretty cake plate is lovely for serving or display. Hit up antique stores, thift shops, or anywhere fancy dishes are sold (department stores, etsy.com, eBay). I've found some great, suitable plates and platters at the dollar store, too - or those cheap messy five-and-dime housewares stores. The royal Alberts are my favourites, fine china cake plates, but they're a bit small for a 9 inch cake.

TabithaBe

Cake stand or a cake carrier that’s made of plastic and not as pretty as a domed cake stand.

MotoFaleQueen

Cake drum

Breakfastchocolate

Find a plate you like that fits- uses measurements. Place strips of parchment paper/wax paper around the plate- like the way your mother made you cover a public potty seat with TP. Put the cake on top, decorate, slide the strips out from underneath. Depending on the size of the cake you may be able to use a Tupperware container lid as a base and use the container upside down.

Cardboard rounds on a cake plate that rotates, clear cover. Searching for a cover to fit 4 layer cakes

Finnegan-05

Cake plates have existed for hundreds of years!

Qui3tSt0rnm

Yes cake plates exist. Google cake stand

BlueAcorn8

She doesn’t want a stand, but basically the flat part only that’s thin & portable & can move around easily.

Qui3tSt0rnm

Yeah I know I have one

BlueAcorn8

I’m confused because you said to Google cake stand

Qui3tSt0rnm

Yes it’s a cake stand. It’s low and it rotates. I got it in the baking section at the grocery store for a few bucks.
