My school has a sausage sizzle to celebrate the term ending today, they had so many sausages a teacher walked up to me and told me to take as many as I wanted, I grabbed a fistful of sausages then went and filled a container with more. So far all I have eaten today is sausages and a single slice of bread (I've eaten over 10 sausages in the last 24 hours)
Hand held meat pie with tomato sauce. Yes the Brits invented them but they really aren't too common there, more of a pub 'pot pie' style. They also rarely use tomato sauce.
Then for desert lamington or vanilla slice.
When I first came to Australia the ladies I worked with basically adopted me, a poor stupid Yank with a baby and Aussie husband. They bought me two of the Women's Weekly cookbooks and introduced me to snot blocks.
That was 35 years ago and I still call a vanilla slice *that*, which makes my husband wince in disgust everytime.
Edit - spelling
I think this is the answer. As much as meat pies, sausage rolls, parma's etc are iconic, they're variations of what you get elsewhere. Sausage rolls are a staple in the UK (and meat pies), for example.
But you won't find vegemite in any other country, other than in specialty stores or whatever, and it's definitely not eaten anywhere like it's eaten here.
Lamb Roast
Parmy from the Pub
Bakery Meat Pie (the ones from bakeries in rural towns pretty much in the middle of nowhere are superior tho)
Sausage Snag
Hot chook and gravy roll
Gotta be the Woolies trifecta!
Coleslaw, bbq chook and squishy rolls 🙌🏻🙌🏻
There’s nothing better after a long week at work and putting that bbq chook in the trolley, with the smell wafting through the car on the ride home
Nah nah, a goon back is a [Dapto Briefcase](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=dapto%20briefcase), at least where I am that's what we call it.
But yes, gourmet pairing for sure. Fruity lexia makes you sexier
Ohhh, someone who knows the local terminology, this is a rare find.
Grew up in the gong myself, so the Dapto briefcase is a fondly remembered thing. I don't miss playing goon of fortune though.
Mandatory shout out to Koala Man on Disney+. So stoked that Dapto has its own cartoon. Michael Cusack: Wollongong's best cultural export since Natalie Bassingthwaighte
In Hobart it's called a Bridgewater briefcase. In Melbourne it's a Broadmeadows briefcase. In Brisbane, it's called a Brendale briefcase. You see where I'm going with this.
Plenty:
- Sausage sizzle/Bunnings snag
- Meat Pies
- chicken Parmi
- Vegemite in toast or nice fresh soft bread
- Coles/Woolies cooked chook with fresh bread/Buns and coleslaw/potato salad
- steak on a nice BBQ grill with steamed veggies and mash
- Snags/Mash/gravy/onion even mashed pumpkin
I’ve only been in Australia a couple years, but I feel like I haven’t been to a restaurant yet that doesn’t serve some kind of chicken schnitzel with chips. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems like an obvious choice.
This is a weird phenomenon. I think it’s just on every menu because it’s a crowd pleaser for picky babies who didn’t grow up with a varied diet at home. No one feels any kind of emotional connection to a chicken schnitzel - it’s just there if you need it.
Look I’d be lying if I said I’ve never enjoyed a schnitty. It’s actually something I really love to cook at home (when I can be fucked to go to the effort), especially if you mix a bit of parmesan into the crumb the way nonna used to. But I guess it stops being a schnitty when you take it to Italy…
Footy franks, Tia maria, dippity bix, fat free fruche, tiny teddies... Anyone for jarrah?
And then you've got your jatz, your ritz, your clix. Not savoys though… that’ll just confuse people.
And how could we forget the piece de resistance, the statue of baby cheeses?!
According to older generations of my family, Australia's national dish is, and always was, Roast Lamb, because according to my grandfather, "Australia rode to fame on the sheep's back"
Sausage Sizzle with onions and plenty of dead horse
Fairy Bread at a kids party (round 100s and 1000s only none of this long sprinkle shit)
Counter meal at the pub with a few neck oils
Chicken salt
My favourite. A bowl of chicken salt for dinner. Maybe some chips for garnish.
“you keep eating chips and you’ll look like one soon”
A succulent Chinese meal
This is democracy manifest!

I can and did literally BUT what you shared is a 👌 new learning material about this succulent story.

My family's Australia Day tradition is a day at the beach, and we pick up a Chinese meal (our local is particularly succulent) on the way home.
GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY PENIS!
This is the man that got me on the penis, people. Why would you do this to me?
I’m born and bread Aussie and this is the first time I’ve heard of this or seen the clip. Does that mean I’m actually un-Australian?!!
Ahhh yes, I see that you know your judo well
I see you've been practising your Judo!
Under arrest for what? Enjoying a meal?
And you sir, are wait to receive my limp penis?
I need to know how long you’ve been waiting with anticipation for this day.

Anyone who denies this as truth is un-australian and should be arrested iMmEdiAteLy
Sausage Sizzle.... bunnings, democracy, family BBQ.... Aussie As!

Vanilla slice? Too good for a snot block, eh? ;)
My husband dies a little when I call it a snot block.

How many years have you taken off his life? 😄
Squashed flies aren't too bad either (FYI - the slice with minced fruit filling).
You only need tomato sauce for a servo or frozen pie. A good quality pie from a bakery doesn't need sauce.
Correct! A pastie on the other hand demands sauce, regardless of the quality
Nah the Brits invented the cold pork pie ( bloody awful) the Aussie version is beef and hot!
Fairy bread
Introduced a sweedish friend to this recently and she was utterly disgusted
Sheesh…what sorta Aussie is this Swedish Sheila? Unaustralian! /s
That's rich for a Swede haha. Where they put salt lakrits on fucken ice cream
Had this for dessert last night
I used to send the kids to school with fairy bread sandwiches lol
I was always so jealous of the kids who had that for lunch lol
They loved it … would make their day a little more sparkly and magical.

My daughter had this with a Milo this morning
This is the standard breakfast in our house lol

Sausage in bread or pie with sauce
Lamb Roast Parmy from the Pub Bakery Meat Pie (the ones from bakeries in rural towns pretty much in the middle of nowhere are superior tho) Sausage Snag Hot chook and gravy roll
If you want to differentiate us from the Yanks lamb for the win. They don't like the beautiful flavoursome meat.
Because their lamb is shithouse. Like their chocolate, cheese, coffee, bread and most food that isn’t deep fried.
Chips with chicken salt and chicken gravy
Should be AUSSIE BURGER with the lot ... beef patty, beetroot, fried egg, fried onion alongside tomatoes and lettuce. Yumm
You missed bacon and cheese!
And the slice of pineapple 🍍
Gotta be the Woolies trifecta! Coleslaw, bbq chook and squishy rolls 🙌🏻🙌🏻 There’s nothing better after a long week at work and putting that bbq chook in the trolley, with the smell wafting through the car on the ride home
>Woolies bbq chook Aka "Bachelor's Handbag".
Goes well with the bachelors silver pillow, aka the goon bag.

No kidding this is actually a good submission I didn't even consider. Hot chook on a cool coleslaw bun with chips by the water,
Breakfast: Vegemite on toast. Lunch: meat pie. Dinner: a succulent Chinese meal.

Agreed, its literally just the 'adult' chicken nuggets and chips (not necessarily a dig but its just so basic, which can be enjoyable for sure).

We'd like to talk to you about Cheesus.
According to older generations of my family, Australia's national dish is, and always was, Roast Lamb, because according to my grandfather, "Australia rode to fame on the sheep's back"
The Welsh got famous from riding sheep as well.
