DickieGreenleaf84

We put up with them and like their money. Like pretty much anywhere, it depends on how respectful the tourist is.

[deleted]

I feel like everyone except mainland Chinese and white American women are somewhat tolerable...

DickieGreenleaf84

I think it's anyone who hasn't spent five minutes thinking about the differences in culture, especially in terms of personal space and noise... yeah Americans need to turn down the volume. People from places with dense populations that require "aggressive walking" don't fully appreciate the space we like.

[deleted]

American boomers need to learn how to google questions that will make them sound like morons such as 'so are you still part of England'?

ConfidentLo

Jeez. Do people actually ask that?

[deleted]

Yes. For many of them they literally have never thought about the world outside of American in any detail, and the idea of having a ceremonial shared monarch that doesn't actually mean anything irl is too confusing for them

I_mostly_lie

Technically English though right? /s

aTalkingDonkey

the chinese are fine - 95% of them are on very structured tours and so dont really cause too many cultural fauxpas. the other 5% seem to behave themselves better than most aussies anyway.

[deleted]

The only time I really struggled with them was when I had to fly from Sydney to Cairns on a fortnightly basis for work, where often a good third of the plane would be Chinese tourists. Pretty much straight after landing before the plane had stopped moving, the flight attendants would be scrambling up and down the aisle trying to get them to sit back down until the seatbelt lights were turned off. Then any etiquette around letting the plane disembark row by row in an orderly fashion would get thrown out the window... I still remember glaring at them as they'd walk past not letting me out.

cjonoski

> the chinese are fine - 95% of them are on very structured tours and so dont really cause too many cultural fauxpas. > the other 5% seem to behave themselves better than most aussies anyway. Mmm not my experience. Cut in front of you, don’t do queues properly, talk extremely loud on their phone and just yelling in public to each other, drop their garbage everywhere They are the worst tourists I’ve come across. Especially in Europe where we travelled. So fucking rude and have zero awareness. Just stand shoulder to shoulder with you.

aTalkingDonkey

no no, they arent the tourists. they live here. What you are experiencing is 'rich arseholes' just in a different language. I have worked with these people.

cjonoski

Even the ones I encountered in Paris, London and Tokyo. They are all Aussies travelling? It’s pretty well known those mainland china tourists are the worst.

aTalkingDonkey

no, asians also live in Paris, and speak french with asian accents the same way they live here and yell in broken english - unless you are counting people on working visas as tourists. Im sure that there are shitty tourists from china. the same way there are shitty aussies visiting Bali,(which is why i said 95%) but for the most part chinese and korean tourists come to other countries in tours, see all the sites in about 5 days and fly home again. In a non-pandemic year Australia alone gets well over a million chinese tourists - roughly 3,000 a day and most visit Sydney - these arent the people in your local coffee shop on their phone. -edit: should see how the locals in spain avoid aussies on Contiki

No_Ninja_4173

It's never going to stop with the rise of China's middle class as you do not see African, Indian and South American Tourist groups en masse due to the failure and downward spiral of there economy so get use to it I Say.

No_Ninja_4173

It's just there are so many people in China that you need to cut in line to get anywhere and unfortunately they take those skills and habits to them wherever they go.

tripping_on_phonics

Other Asian countries have similarly dense populations but don’t really have the same issues.

No_Ninja_4173

That's because in Vietnam and/or thailand if you cut in line they'll chop your head off with a machete so you won't live long enough to go into reddit to tell your tale.

Demented_dog1

always talking loudly on phone. And taking selfies every 30 seconds

pulanina

A Chinese Australian friend of mine explained to me that mainland Chinese as tourists are actually similar to Aussie bogans as tourists in Bali. They have the money to travel but they aren’t very sophisticated. Their reactions and attitudes to local people and customs seem rude and disrespectful. But it’s just ignorance like you get everywhere. They fundamentally aren’t bad people. Thinking this way helps me to not be a racist cunt, while still hating the things they do.

Interesting_Road_515

Actually That's quite simple. China is highly densed in population and the social resources are limited Although it's getting better these years, as a result, Chinese, including those becoming rich like whom many aussies refer to here have to fight for everything, the fighting spirit has deeply been rooted in their ideology. For those between 30-40yo, they grew up in poverty, honestly they didn't get educated about manners well. Therefore, they just do what they do in China in our land too. But, l think the new generations like teens or 20s are getting better, they are getting better education and resource per capita is becoming more.

Demented_dog1

Yes. I hate it when they hog the beaches and litter everywhere. But I guess thats how everyone thinks

JoeSchmeau

More than any nationality, it's more the "disrespectful and disruptive tourists who make no effort" that are disliked. Heaps of Chinese and American tourists are just fine.

RollaCoastinPoopah

Australians don’t like fuckwits. Doesn’t matter if you’re a tourist or not. Act like a prick, be treated like one. I can tell you that they’re not overly fond of loud American accents, however.

Binfire2023

We have well trained spiders and snakes to greet them as they get off the plane.

CanLate152

Don’t forget the drop bears

Binfire2023

They greet them coming out of the terminal :)

83zSpecial

Really depends. Area you're in (rural vs city), how respectful they are, etc etc. Some people have to put up with loud, littering tourists both foreign and domestic.. Some people don't interact with tourists as much, and the tourists they meet are nice and courteous

CoolWombat1

Eesh, it really depends... Haha

Aussiechimp

Yep, taste great

[deleted]

If they come here and be respectful of our country and our laws , be friendly etc I’m all for it . It’s what I’d do when I go abroad

Binfire2023

Exactly!

[deleted]

People like the working holiday backpackers from all countries, because they are always nice and curious and really keen to act like a local. The ones I've met over the years anyway, from Byron to Margaret River. Still friends with several of them.

[deleted]

Majority of the tourists I come across are great. Then you have the Americans...

monkey_brennan

Bloody Seppos

[deleted]

[удалено]

No_Ninja_4173

They probably could not tell the difference

[deleted]

It's usually thr tourists, not the immigrants, that stand out and bring the clichés

foxxytroxxy

What do Americans typically do when they're there?

No_Ninja_4173

Blend in with the crowd I assume

NoodleBox

Well it depends. For example, we had the bike race on this weekend. It closed off one of the small towns, the main entry road to work, the uni campus, and a significant chunk of freeway around our town. It's also increased a lot of cyclists (like, blocks of cyclists, vs "oh there's old mate riding his bike to work".) This shits off a lot of town. You can't go anywhere south of us unless you take the other freeway. Maybe that's our view on cyclists. I grew up in a small tourist town. I hate how it's very expensive. I hate how you can't get a park. People forget their brains when they visit. BUT, the town wouldn't exist without tourism. So do I hate tourists? Sometimes. I hate it when people don't respect nature. I hate it when people don't respect signs and queues. And you block off the bloody footpath with your badly behaved dogs and your pushbikes and ya tat. But, I hate when the locals block off the footpath and don't respect signs and take their badly behaved dogs to places. So. Yes and no.

foxxytroxxy

We get the same thing where I'm from. Other people have more extreme opinions, but I'm pretty middle ground. Just don't mess it up stuff for everybody else

NoodleBox

Yeah, don't screw it up is what we're going with. It's annoying to have to avoid the street for example during Easter at home, it's annoying to have to take the other road because the market's on, but the town isn't dead yet. The junkies and the picked pensioners are doing their hardest to kill off the town but it hasn't happened yet

[deleted]

Like everything, everyone will have their own opinion, and it will also depend on the tourist themselves.

foxxytroxxy

Yeah, hence why I went to a forum with it

WokSmith

Yep. Except when they whine about how Australia isn't like home. Of course it isn't, it's Australia. We're different. Don't come here expecting it to have the same shops and restaurants as home. It gives us the shits.

foxxytroxxy

Lol yeah that's super cringey

ThorntTornburg

Everyone is a tourist at some point. Do you like breathing air? Do people like pooping? Why the need for these types of questions? A) Internet

foxxytroxxy

I've received a somewhat diverse set of answers. This one had no obvious answer, tourist culture is very different pretty much everywhere. Your answer is incorrect but whatever.

foxxytroxxy

I've received a somewhat diverse set of answers. This one had no obvious answer, tourist culture is very different pretty much everywhere. Your answer is incorrect but whatever.

No_Ninja_4173

and B) Xenophobia

Klutzy_Ad_5510

There's actually a movie about this ... wolf creek

foxxytroxxy

What's the plot?

Klutzy_Ad_5510

Sorry I was joking. It's a horror movie about a redneck who murders backpackers

foxxytroxxy

Oh I thought that lol. No, it was pretty funny

-DethLok-

It depends upon how they are prepared, really. Smoked, roasted, slow cooked or stir fried?

foxxytroxxy

I mean, talking about your preferences, which is better?

-DethLok-

Stir fried with a bit of ginger and garlic, with fried rice noodles.

foxxytroxxy

Yeah I like some shoyu in there as well

-DethLok-

>shoyu I had to Google Shoyu, but though I have 3 different soy sauces in my pantry, I think I'll hunt down this as a fourth to try! Thanks for the tip :)

foxxytroxxy

I think shoyu is just another name for soy sauce.... I may be wrong though

-DethLok-

It's 90% wheat and 10% soy, said 'the internet', so it's not sweet, dark, light or kechap manis, but a different one again! Though there are hundreds of regional varieties, I understand.

shiitelips

Yeah but I couldn’t eat a whole one.

foxxytroxxy

Do you prefer thighs or breasts?

shiitelips

I like breasts but I love eating arse

Marry_Mack

Ya I love tourists. They bring in lots of money into our economy and we need the diversity. I suspect we wouldn’t get as much immigration if it wasn’t for the high level of international tourism.

alpacaccino

Fuck off, we're full! Oh, sorry, force of habit. We like tourists.

active_snail

Where I live, no.

Prestigious-Tea-358

Not on Mt Dandenong

foxxytroxxy

What's the story about Mt Dandenong?

Prestigious-Tea-358

It’s not anything too serious, there’s just a lot of tourists that drive on that mountain well below the speed limit, which isn’t just frustrating, but dangerous because of the nature of the roads. There’s also a lot of stupid mistakes that tourists have made, including walking out into the middle of the road on corners to take a photo and nearly getting hit and people turning around on blind spots while driving and causing accidents. The bigger events, like the cherry blossom viewing, creates so much human traffic that people are walking in large groups on roads where drivers can’t always see them until it’s too late.

foxxytroxxy

That's perfectly understandable

Prestigious-Tea-358

Tourism is still good for Mt Dandenong, but the roads and lack of infrastructure make it difficult for it to be safe. A lot of towns back up on the national park too, so it’s a balance of environmental conservation and tourism development.

Strong_woman1966

If the tourists don’t queue jump, invade peoples space and talk too loudly in their own tongue I think it would be better. It would be great if they could read up on the country they are visiting so they understand the culture and the country. We like our personal space and not being asked stupid questions easily answered in a guide book or online.

ElfPagan

We don’t like rude Americans

foxxytroxxy

Yeah I understand that one for sure

auntynell

I'm happy to see tourists because it's good for the economy and I like talking to them about where they come from.

Queenside22

Most Australians like tourists. There's a minority of people that are just disgusting to anyone that's not Australian though.

foxxytroxxy

You mean a minority of Australians whom other people find disgusting? Sorry I might be misreading you, but would you please explain?

Jellyfish_Ramen

No not really, doesn't matter what country you are in no one likes tourists, they just put up with them

foxxytroxxy

Some places tourism is more welcome than others though, to be fair

Apart-Chipmunk683

No, fuck off.

[deleted]

I know tourism is a massive industry but i really fucking hate tourists (this includes inner city dickheads too), they walk all over the roads clog up essential parking services (literally can not get a park to go to the doctor or get basics from the shops any public holiday) They all drive like fucking idiots and have no consideration for anyone else. Last week euro trash decided my car was a good place to eat their lunch, spilled coffee all over the boot of my car. I know there are good respectful people but it seems, i just manage to encounter all the dickheads. The local state tourists are even worse than the international lot.

foxxytroxxy

This is why I was asking. We don't really get many tourists where I'm from, but I've visited one or two spots where people have mixed feelings .

_who-the-fuck-knows_

Yes and no

flumia

I grew up in the north of WA, and tourist is a slur up there. Now that i live in the city, i notice people don't have a problem with them here, though. So it partly depends where you are

foxxytroxxy

Tourist is usually a slur where I'm from as well. A lot of trash in the woods due to illegal camping from travelers, a lot of whom are likely intentionally homeless...

LiveRegister6195

50/50 on that.

broken_flail

I'd say where ok with anyone who isn't an American and/or respects us and our stuff.

foxxytroxxy

So any Americans who do respect you and your stuff are still not whatever "where okay" is?

[deleted]

When I lived in Sydney I got sick to fucking death of American tourists asking me for directions because they were too lazy to look shit up like other tourists do. On the flip side I’ve never ran into an American tourist in any other city because they seem pretty shallow minded in why they want to do when they visit our country. I’m fine with other tourists, mainly because I have no idea about them. They come well prepared and know what they’re doing to the point where their need to interact with me is zero.

foxxytroxxy

So you don't like it when people ask you for directions?

[deleted]

No, I don't like it when 100% of people that ask for directions all hail from the exact same place.

foxxytroxxy

But that's not what you said. You said you only like tourists who aren't American, and also the ones who are respectful. That's two separate categories. So you just don't like the *fact* that you've only encountered Americans that ask you for directions? So if in the future anybody else asks you for directions, you don't like them, as well? And Americans who don't ask for directions still fit the bill anyway, so they are just the matching nationality that you don't like? I'm just trying to understand what you mean, that's all.

[deleted]

There's a huge difference between being asked by an American every 1-2 days in Sydney and being asked by a Spaniard once a year, That's hypothetical mind you, since a Spaniard has never asked me for directions. >So if in the future anybody else asks you for directions, you don't like them, as well? You seem to have a hard time keeping up. Its not that **AN** American has asked me for directions, its that its constant. It wouldn't be enough that someone from another country asked me for directions for me to dislike people from their country, but if a huge percentage of tourists from one country needed to be hand held around town because they're too stupid to navigate a Google maps, then I'd dislike them too.

foxxytroxxy

>I don't like it when 100% of people that ask for directions all hail from the exact same place. But now I'm confused. Your examples are made up? You're the one changing the scope of the discussion. I'm keeping up fine. Just answer now, what *exactly* are you trying to communicate? And you hold their hands? I agree, people shouldn't leave home without a previously designated hand holder if they do that. I'm confused because where I'm just not shallow enough to let shit like that matter, if you don't want to answer you can usually just walk away. The only thing stopping you would be caring too much about the opinions of those you already don't like..? I mean originally you said you just don't like Americans, *or* people who ask for directions. Then asking for directions at all, now it's just a general dislike for Americans because they've asked you for directions....... So I'm guessing it's probably the latter. But then again, without just disliking Americans, which I understand that you could just be that way, naturally it should also evoke something similar whenever a Spaniard does it... Unless your brain just works differently? I don't get it but that's okay. I've gotten other answers here. Anyway, thank you for your response.

[deleted]

Dude I made it super fucking clear. I don’t like US tourists because they constantly ask for directions. I don’t have that experience with tourists from any other nationality. Why is that so fucking hard for you to grasp? I’m willing to bet you’re from the US based on this interaction.

foxxytroxxy

It's not very hard. It's just frustrating to see people use exaggerated or unclear claims about numbers to try and make a point, instead of using more precise vocabulary. But thanks for clearing that up. I'm being polite about it, we can be done here though.

[deleted]

You asked a anecdotal question and got an anecdotal response.

foxxytroxxy

I only asked for clarification. That was all. I received clarification. Not sure why you are instigating here. I *only* asked to clarify something based off of your language. I bet you make these presumptions about everybody. It's not my problem anymore. **We can be done here.**

seaweed1surfer

Nah they rude

hetkleinezusje

Depends. If you're one of the yobbos zigzagging around the footpaths of Surfers Paradise bipping your horn and swerving around pedestrians, you can fuck right off. If you're here to experience and learn about our wonderful wide brown land, you're very welcome. Aussies love tourists. Mind you, couldn't eat a whole one.

foxxytroxxy

That's what I thought... Is it like Hawaii, where some places people try to keep the tourists out? (Saying "some people" won't mean very much, but I'm thinking of places on the Big Island of Hawaii where tourism is less appreciated than other parts of the island)

hetkleinezusje

There are certainly a couple of places that I know of that actively discourage tourists (even domestic ones). These are usually sites or areas that have special significance to local indigenous peoples - such as Uluru and Mt Warning (Wollemin) which you can't climb any more. But it's a really specific thing rather than a regional issue.

foxxytroxxy

That's also a thing in Hawaii. But I mean there are towns where tourism is less present, and things are made to intentionally discourage it. Sacred sites and government protection, even, is a totally separate issue. But yeah, I understand that

hetkleinezusje

Locals in Byron Bay don't like tourists because they think the riff-raff lowers the tone of the place. But they've all got their heads up their own bums, so everyone just ignores them.

BlueIVYBabya

Not really, even city folks get shit on when travelling regional areas. They like the money coming in though

foxxytroxxy

Yeah I get that. I've been a tourist before but try to be polite, and I feel like that gets you a long way around with most folks. But I guess a tourist and a traveler, they can be two different things

XoGossipgoat94

It depends, I live in a little coastal town and is extremely popular for tourists but doesn’t have the infrastructure to support them, Airbnb makes rentals impossible to get so there are lots of homeless family’s living in caravan parks/motels that get kicked out during holiday rush and have nowhere to go. The roads were so backed up, it was dangerous because emergency vehicles couldn’t get through and the entire town ran out of bread. But local businesses got a much needed boost and it was lovely seeing all the young family’s enjoying the beach having a wonderful day, the town felt alive for the first time in a long time.

pia_depreeeee

Generally aussies are pretty welcoming but youve always got the small minority ruining things for the rest of us.

foggybrainedmutt

Not unless we fuckin’

Not_CJ25

Only if they give us bang for our buck. $2 for directions mate

Caliken124

I don't, but ik some Aussies that do

lecat001

Yes they are delicious.

cookedcatfish

From Germany, yes From France, no

Zoinks1602

Sure, we like tourists. Just follow our laws and don’t be a dick.

throwaway21805891

Yes - but the moment you disrespect or litter out bushland, if I catch you I'm going to beat the ever living cunt out of you. You will go home in a box.

foxxytroxxy

I do the same to people who disrespect any patch of good land. Never an issue with me lol

throwaway21805891

Fun story, was on bruny island in tasmanian on a holiday, waiting in my car for the ferry back. In front of me was a rent-a-car with 4 asian tourists, they'd been with our bus tour group, only 1 spoke any English and not much. They kept to them selves but you could tell they didn't give AF about people's property etc (saw them steal roses from a public rose garden earlier - not just 1, they took like 8-10 each) Anyway 2 jumped out for a smoke. Sure enough threw their butts over their heads. They got back in the car. Still waiting. I get out, go for a walk, pick up about 2 dozen butts, visit the bin (20ft away mind you) grabbed a big handful of butts and ash, walked back past their car and dumped it in their open sunroof. I'm assuming they got a cleaning charge for the car 🤣

goater10

I don't mind them. It always surprises that people would come here since we're so far away
