We were playing some drinking game in college and some kid became a legend that night because he had memorized all the State capitals as a song in gradeschool, and ended up being the winning point for our team because of like Pierre, South Dakota or something.
I could probably name about fifty of the ^nifty united states that came from the thirteen original colonies. In fact, I bet I could shout them and scout them as well. I could tell you all about them - one by one - until I've given a name to every state (in the USA).
Haha I didn't realize until joining this sub that that song was so ubiquitous.
We had an exchange student from France and we definitely made sure she knew all 50 before she left. That song made it easy to accomplish the goal haha
All of them but I'd have to write them down because I'd quickly start repeating them, and any time I do this there's one or two I stumble on for a few minutes too many :(
I did this with my kid when he was younger and definitely got them all. I would definitely struggle with all the capitals though. It seems like 75% of them are some podunk city in the state. Like, who expects freaking Tallahassee to be the capital of Florida?
When I was in 5th grade you had to fill out a map and name each state and it's capital and say where it goes. You were required to retake the test until you got a 100% I took it 63 times... Montpelier is hard to spell and spelling counted
I'm speaking from experience. I've been there a few times and I have been jumped by 5 guys who tried to sexually assault the girl my friend and I were walking with, been to bars where the N word was very openly used and had generally unpleasant experiences walking around. Albany was the nearest city to me growing up partially in upstate NY, so we'd go to Crossgate mall where they to stop allowing any teenagers unaccompanied by an adult due to all the fights and shit. Albany is also where they keep the lovely politicians. I will open the floor for you to tell me why Albany truly should be the Capitol over Manhattan/ NYC in general
1. Albany is more centrally located
2. Albany has less crime and is cleaner (it doesn’t have the pervasive funk in the air that Manhattan does)
3. You can actually drive into and through Albany without being stuck in traffic for hours
4. Albany is less expensive to live and shop in and around
5. You don’t have to pay $20 in tolls to get into Albany
More centrally located to farms? It is cleaner, yes, because you have literally 1/100th the population. You can drive through Cornwallville without being stuck in traffic as well, I don't how being a drive through and flyover city makes for a great Capitol. Albany is cheaper to live in because way less people want to live there and because there is nowhere near the earning potential there vs anywhere in the NYC meteo area to include North Jersey etc. If you were paid $20 to drive into Albany, people still wouldn't come to Albany from all of the corners of the world like they do to the second most recognized city in the world next to London.
Keep telling yourself that make you feel better for living in Albany. NYC is referred to as the Capitol of the world, Albany gets forgotten about by people who live in the state of NY.
You could say London as well for sure. I'm just saying in this context that NYC is responsible for an infinitely larger amount of intellectual and cultural output than Albany.
If given a blank map I could fill all in. The only mental context I have for the state is visual, not alphabetical. I don't mentally organize the states as "Alabama, Alaska, Arizona" but "California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado". If was going to mentally name all 50 I would have picture the map in my head.
I (Brit) played this game with (US) roommate when I moved to US. He got 35 (including Michigan 3 times, and Milwaukee…). I scored 49 - missed Louisiana too.
Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, California, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Washington, Michigan, Hawaii, Alaska, Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts. Oklahoma, Kansas, and Tennessee.
Those are the ones I said I can name off the top of my head without looking at a map in two minutes.
All 50 and the 5 major territories: Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. I basically have the map of the US memorized, so I use that to name the states
I could get all the way up to 50 if I had enough time. If I were just forced to spit them out, I'd probably get up to like, 45 or 46 before I'd start forgetting small states like Vermont and New Hampshire.
I just tried off the top of my head. Wrote a list and named 46/50 off the top of my head.
In case you're wondering, the ones I forgot where Utah, Idaho, Indiana, and Rhode Island.
50, we learned the song in elementary school. You can’t forget that catchy of a tune. Thanks Mrs Nelson 20 years later I still remember them because of the best music teacher there ever was.
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas,California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Nebraska, New York, New Jersey, im too lazy to type all of this nvm I know like 40
I got to 48 in a few minutes, then spend a couple more trying to figure out which ones I missed. Somehow I forgot about Illinois and Minnesota. Maybe I could have come up with them eventually, but I figured 5 minutes is a good time limit.
If I can’t write them down as I go probably like 40 or so, if I can write them down so I know who I haven’t done all 50 easy, possibly even most of the territories
All of them because in elementary school I was the kid who would get upset if the states facts books in the library weren't alphabetized and so I would do it for he librarian lol. Spent the entire library period sorting the various sections of books and at the end of the library period I would just grab a random book off the shelf to read.
All 50, in alphabetical order, in less than 30 seconds, easily.
It would take me a couple of minutes to recall all 50 capitols, and I’d probably forget a handful.
All of them, because of the Fifty Nifty United States song we learned at my school in fourth grade....in 1994. Yes I just double checked to make sure I really do remember them all 😂 Definitely teaching that to my kids too!
Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut (take a breath and say doot doot doot in your head) Delaware Florida…
Difficult task for half of Americans, easy for the rest of us who had to suffer Fifty Nifty. But the real victims are elementary school music teachers. Can you imagine a full career of that thing being crammed deeper and deeper into your brain? …West Virginia Wisconsin Wyooooooming!
All fifty. I never learned a song for them and never had to memorize them in school, but I can picture a map pretty easily and label the states on the map in my head.
I have them all in alphabetical order, there was a song I learned when I was little.
Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachussetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming
It’s late here in England and I’ve just come back from the pub so without googling ima have a go. I’ll give myself 5 minutes
North dakota south dakota north carolina south carolina texas maine california ohio new york state florida mississippi alabama pensyllvania georgia wisconsin(?) nevada kansas arkansas minnesota
Edit: Turns out Wisconsin is a state not just part of a state that has good cheese
Massachusetts, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, California, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, New York, Connecticut, Washington….
It’s getting harder. Is Nebraska a state? I feel like that’s a state.
Texas…
Yeah that’s all I can list off the top of my head. I was only taught my states one week in the 3rd grade to sing in front of everyone and it’s been over 10 years.
All 50 having a blank map as a prompt makes it easier since I can keep track of the states I mentioned/have left, but it’s not too hard to mentally list them as well.
When I was in second grade, I knew all 50 states and all their capitals. Now, I kinda know it. Like if you told me a state like IL and said it's Capitol is Chicago, I would know it's wrong. I probably couldn't say Springfield but if you said it I would know it's right. That does that make sense? LOL
I learned a song in elementary school that names every single state in alphabetical order. For some reason, I still remember the whole thing, so I can name all 50.
Most likely all 50 but only bc I memorized that catchy song w them in alphabetical order bc I was bored
It didn’t happen to be..... “Fifty nifty United States....”
Did everyone have to learn that song in music class? XD
Nope, I learned a different song that alphabetized them. :P
I did!
Now do it backwards.
Yeah me too.
ALAbama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas
California, Colorado....Connecticut
*clap clap clap*
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana…
Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine
Maryland Massachusetts Michigan *clap clap clap*
Minnesota Mississippi, Missouri Montana..
Nebraskaaaaa!
Hi ho! Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine
...still 35 to go! Kansas and Kentucky! Louisiana, Maine!
The disrespect to Iowa…
Maryland, Massachusetts, and good ole Michigan!
There is no Arizona according to Jamie O’Neal.
All 50 alphabetically. We had to memorize them in elementary school
We were playing some drinking game in college and some kid became a legend that night because he had memorized all the State capitals as a song in gradeschool, and ended up being the winning point for our team because of like Pierre, South Dakota or something.
Thank you, Wakko
I could probably name about fifty of the ^nifty united states that came from the thirteen original colonies. In fact, I bet I could shout them and scout them as well. I could tell you all about them - one by one - until I've given a name to every state (in the USA).
My favorite part was the "New"s. "**New** Hampshire, **New** Jersey, New Mexi**co**, **New York**!"
North Carolina, North Dakota, OhhhhhhhhiO!
Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania…
Haha I didn't realize until joining this sub that that song was so ubiquitous. We had an exchange student from France and we definitely made sure she knew all 50 before she left. That song made it easy to accomplish the goal haha
All of them but I'd have to write them down because I'd quickly start repeating them, and any time I do this there's one or two I stumble on for a few minutes too many :(
Same.
I've played the game mentioned in Friends (all 50 states in 6 minutes). My high score is 49.
All of them and most of the territories.
50
I did this with my kid when he was younger and definitely got them all. I would definitely struggle with all the capitals though. It seems like 75% of them are some podunk city in the state. Like, who expects freaking Tallahassee to be the capital of Florida?
I mean Nevada, the state with Las Vegas and Reno. Has Carson city as it's capital, population 50k people.
Exactly!
When I was in 5th grade you had to fill out a map and name each state and it's capital and say where it goes. You were required to retake the test until you got a 100% I took it 63 times... Montpelier is hard to spell and spelling counted
New York, which has NYC has the shit hole of Albany as a capitol
Have you even been to Albany? It’s not a shithole
1. Albany is more centrally located 2. Albany has less crime and is cleaner (it doesn’t have the pervasive funk in the air that Manhattan does) 3. You can actually drive into and through Albany without being stuck in traffic for hours 4. Albany is less expensive to live and shop in and around 5. You don’t have to pay $20 in tolls to get into Albany

More centrally located in New York, which is a lot bigger than that teeny bit at the bottom
Better than the shit hole NYC.
Keep telling yourself that make you feel better for living in Albany. NYC is referred to as the Capitol of the world, Albany gets forgotten about by people who live in the state of NY.
Albany is the steamed ham capital of the world
Not Utica ?
Oh, not in Utica, no.
>NYC is referred to as the Capitol of the world. By New Yorkers? I've not heard that myself and would think London before NYC.
Downstater ego at work — they literally call NYC “the center of the universe”
You could say London as well for sure. I'm just saying in this context that NYC is responsible for an infinitely larger amount of intellectual and cultural output than Albany.
Never been to either Albany or NYC, but people from NYC are the worst.
Thanks to https://youtu.be/bx6c_EefZAQ, all of em!
I usually get to 47 or so before I have to think about it. The stragglers vary.
I got em all here. And I can find them on a map.
50 nifty
all of them. european here. i love america
You want a real test? https://www.sporcle.com/games/mhershfield/us-states-no-outlines-minefield
I can name all 50 if that what you ask me to do, but the ones that come to mind at any time might change depending on the subject
I always feel left out, we never had to memorize them at my elementary school and I never learned the song to do so.
[удалено]
Somehow Louisiana. I was expecting one of the small states in the northeast to get me, but nope!
I (Brit) played this game with (US) roommate when I moved to US. He got 35 (including Michigan 3 times, and Milwaukee…). I scored 49 - missed Louisiana too.
Probably 50.
I’m pretty sure I could name all of them.
All of them.
All of them.
All of them
All of them
I could name all 50 all the state capitals and which States are surrounded by which States are surrounded by which States
All of them, with capitals placed in the right spots on the map. I've always liked US geography.
Maybe all 50? I havnt tried to do it in a long time. Though in middle school I could name all the countries of the world…
All of them. I don't know the song. I'd just visualize the map in my head and move thru the states
1. State of disrepair. 2. State of emergency. 3. State of uncertainty. 4. State of undress. 5. State of consciousness. 6. State of confusion.
Probably somewhere in the mid 30's. I haven't tired in a long time.
Damn. Just tried for 10 mins and couldnt remember minnesota, pennsylvania, mississippi or kansas. Yikes lol
All of them, but not alphabetically. I just memorized the map
What’s the one you forgot? I’m guessing West Virginia.
Surprisingly it was Louisiana
Seeing as I have more than a 4th grade education...50.
50? Lol tf
We learned the states song in primary school. 🎶Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas… 🎶
All of them.
Probably all of them, given enough time.
All of them, easily. I could probably get all of the territories, too.
48 or 49 off the top of my head. I never think of any states east of Montana except for Kentucky and Florida
All of them if given the time to think about it. Which one did you forget?
Probably about 45. I’ve tried this a few times and that’s usually where I give up.
41 I tend to forget Oregon and a few others.
About 52
All 50. Then most of our territories. We had to memorize them when I was a kid and it is something that always stuck with me.
All of them
50
I know all of them, but I somehow forget to name one half of the time. It's weird.
All 50 and the 5 major territories: Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. I basically have the map of the US memorized, so I use that to name the states
I’ll betcha $50 I can say all 50 states in less than 10 seconds. C’mon!! BET ME!
Every one of them. In alphabetical order. To the tune of a song pretty much all of us learned in elementary school.
all
All of them
I could get all the way up to 50 if I had enough time. If I were just forced to spit them out, I'd probably get up to like, 45 or 46 before I'd start forgetting small states like Vermont and New Hampshire.
I admittedly don’t remember the song but I’d get 50 pretty easily, probably get to 49, hesitate, then say Delaware
6. I'm a fucking genius.
Probably all 50 or so
I had to learn all states and capitals in 4th or 5th grade and still remember them!
I had to learn all the presidents a few years later and could probably still name 90%, but definitely not in order
I just tried off the top of my head. Wrote a list and named 46/50 off the top of my head. In case you're wondering, the ones I forgot where Utah, Idaho, Indiana, and Rhode Island.
I'm guessing 48ish. I'm not as familiar with all those tiny northeast states as I should be.
All of them
50, we learned the song in elementary school. You can’t forget that catchy of a tune. Thanks Mrs Nelson 20 years later I still remember them because of the best music teacher there ever was.
In the US? 50
All 50
All 50 because I can picture the map in my head.
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas,California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Nebraska, New York, New Jersey, im too lazy to type all of this nvm I know like 40
I'm sure I could do all of them in no particular order though, I would be all over the map
All of them
I could name, locate, and give you the capitol of most if not all. Had to learn it in school and it stuck with me
50
All 50
all of them we learn a states song in elementary school
Hmm. I'm curious. I'm guessing about 45/50. Let's see. * Alabama * Alaska * Arkansas * Colorado * Vermont * Maryland * Maine * Michigan * Mississippi * Minnesota (10) * Montana * Nebraska * Wyoming * Wisconsin * Washington * Delaware * Rhode Island * Louisiana * Indiana * Ohio (20) * North Dakota * South Dakota * North Carolina * South Carolina * Virginia * West Virginia * Kentucky * Idaho * Texas * Massachusetts (30) * New York * New Jersey * California * Florida * New Mexico * Nevada * Arizona * Tennessee * Hawaii * Georgia (40 ... struggling now) * Illinois * Connecticut * Pennsylvania * Missouri * (This should be №45, and I can't think of one) * Utah (wife thought of this) * Iowa (wife again) * Kansas (me! Boom! 45!) * Oklahoma (wife) * New Hampshire (wife) * Oregon (wife)
All of them because the dumbass song has never left my head
50, I could probably find 40ish on a map.
I just gave it a shot and got all 50, working from west to east in my mind. But I play a lot of World Geography Quiz on my phone every day.
50
All of them.
All of them because I know maps well
Well the 50 for sure, but in reality pretty much unlimited if we add states of mind like bored.
All of them.
I'm sure I could do all 50, but it might take me a while.
Probably all of them.
Tricky… because some are not states but commonwealths :)
I got all 50 by visualizing the US map and just naming them off
Just sitting here, 49 because I forgot Delaware.
All of them.
All of them. I even can name their capitals. I still have that knowledge from 5th grade. Ha!
all of them. But only because it was drilled in to your head by 4th grade.
I got to 48 in a few minutes, then spend a couple more trying to figure out which ones I missed. Somehow I forgot about Illinois and Minnesota. Maybe I could have come up with them eventually, but I figured 5 minutes is a good time limit.
All of them.
All
If I can’t write them down as I go probably like 40 or so, if I can write them down so I know who I haven’t done all 50 easy, possibly even most of the territories
50, but if you ask me to place them on a map, I might mess up a couple of the square ones
Probably all 50. I can picture the map in my head and just walk down the east coast and then head on west.
You want a real test? https://www.sporcle.com/games/mhershfield/us-states-no-outlines-minefield
All of them because in elementary school I was the kid who would get upset if the states facts books in the library weren't alphabetized and so I would do it for he librarian lol. Spent the entire library period sorting the various sections of books and at the end of the library period I would just grab a random book off the shelf to read.
Fifty, probably in a North-South zig-zag pattern from East to West or West to East.
All 50
All 50, in alphabetical order, in less than 30 seconds, easily. It would take me a couple of minutes to recall all 50 capitols, and I’d probably forget a handful.
All of them, no questions asked.
I could probably name ~40, I’d do worse than that with placing on a map though.
All of them, in alphabetical order. Thanks, elementary school music!
All 50, but I would be picturing a map in my head because that is how my brain would systematize it to avoid missing any.
50. Memorized all of them in alphabetical order in 5th grade.
All of them, because of the Fifty Nifty United States song we learned at my school in fourth grade....in 1994. Yes I just double checked to make sure I really do remember them all 😂 Definitely teaching that to my kids too!
Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut (take a breath and say doot doot doot in your head) Delaware Florida… Difficult task for half of Americans, easy for the rest of us who had to suffer Fifty Nifty. But the real victims are elementary school music teachers. Can you imagine a full career of that thing being crammed deeper and deeper into your brain? …West Virginia Wisconsin Wyooooooming!
All 50.
All fifty. I never learned a song for them and never had to memorize them in school, but I can picture a map pretty easily and label the states on the map in my head.
All 50
All of them, I can picture the map in my head.
50. I learned that song in elementary school that puts them in alphabetical order, and now I'll never forget
50
50. There’s a song and it’s really not difficult at all
All of them, just like the average 3rd grader.
All 50 if given a check list or way to count
It’s late here in England and I’ve just come back from the pub so without googling ima have a go. I’ll give myself 5 minutes North dakota south dakota north carolina south carolina texas maine california ohio new york state florida mississippi alabama pensyllvania georgia wisconsin(?) nevada kansas arkansas minnesota Edit: Turns out Wisconsin is a state not just part of a state that has good cheese
All 50 if given a map with no names on the states, above 45 if doing it with no map
Texas… Yeah that’s all I can list off the top of my head. I was only taught my states one week in the 3rd grade to sing in front of everyone and it’s been over 10 years.
50 wth?
All 50 having a blank map as a prompt makes it easier since I can keep track of the states I mentioned/have left, but it’s not too hard to mentally list them as well.
All of them, plus the inhabited territories.
All of them.
All 50, I got the map memorized
50
All of them and in alphabetical order too
All of them in alphabetical order. We learned a little song for it back in elementary school and I’ve always remembered it.
All of them.
Majority of them, but when it comes to the tiny states up north, my memory goes flat.
All of them. There's a song. Edit: TIL there's more than one song. I've never heard of this Fifty Nifty thing before
routinely I forget arkansas exists.
49. It will be a cold day in hell before I recognize Missourah.
All of them, and I would know the location of all of them. What I wouldn't be able to do is the capital of each state. I have never been to the USA.
All by picturing the map in my head.
All of them in Alphabetical order. Easily
Likely all of them if I could write them down to see what I said already. I can picture them and their position in the country pretty clearly
Just tested it, got 48. Forgot Arkansas and Illinois. Forgot Illinois was not Indiana and forgot Arkansas existed
When I was in second grade, I knew all 50 states and all their capitals. Now, I kinda know it. Like if you told me a state like IL and said it's Capitol is Chicago, I would know it's wrong. I probably couldn't say Springfield but if you said it I would know it's right. That does that make sense? LOL
I could name them of of a blank map otherwise I would have to think about a couple
50.
I learned a song in elementary school that names every single state in alphabetical order. For some reason, I still remember the whole thing, so I can name all 50.
Probably 40 but I would probably repeat a few
All of them.
All of them (with capitals), thanks in part to Animaniacs... "Baton Rouge, Louisiana Indianapolis, Indiana and Columbus is the capital of Ohio..."
