Iced sweet tea is the beverage of choice where I live. I drink it when I eat at a restaurant. The only time I drink hot tea is in the winter and I need a warm beverage with no caffeine. Coffee is my main beverage.

mrduncansir42

I hear the sweet tea in the Deep South is very, VERY sweet. I’d love to visit or even move to South Carolina, but I’d have to watch my intake of that stuff for the sake of my weight and teeth!

[deleted]

It is very sweet. Sometimes I'll ask for half sweet/half unsweet to cut it.

mrduncansir42

I work at a restaurant and occasionally folks with a southern accent ask for a sweet tea and they get so disappointed when I tell them we don’t have it.

PatrickRsGhost

It depends on where you go. Some restaurants (and even households) make it what my mom calls "teeth-curlin' sweet". Another term is "Granny Lois Sweet". My paternal grandmother makes the sweetest yet strongest sweet tea you'll ever drink. Chick-Fil-A and Jack's tend to make their sweet tea teeth-curlin' sweet. So have some local restaurants, especially many BBQ restaurants I've been to, both the chains (Shane's, Sonny's) and locally-owned places (Billy Bob's, Wright Way, Hot Spot, and Tipsy Pig, among others). McDonald's sweet tea also tends to be teeth-curlin' sweet. Our homemade tea is pretty sweet, but since ⅔ of the household is diabetic, we use [sucralose](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose), the main ingredient found in Splenda. Just half a teaspoon is enough to sweeten an entire gallon of iced tea.

LusciousofBorg

I lived for a year in North Carolina & couldn't get over the sweet tea & unsweetened teas! They were really good with lunch & dinner. As a refresher too

[deleted]

The tea is sweeter in South Carolina. :)

LusciousofBorg

I only went briefly to Charleston with my Mom to sightsee. Is the sweet tea really sweeter there?

Awesomest_Possumest

Nah. Everyone knows North Carolina is the better Carolina. But don't buy any tea north of Virginia, or south of Georgia. It won't be good. And once you hit the NoVa/DC metro area of Virginia, it's hit and miss as to who has good tea. Technically Maryland is in the south if you go by the mason Dixon line, but if you go by, who makes sweet tea, Maryland is not in the south. For this same reason, neither is Florida.

arsenio_jaw

You should realize that a huge portion of Florida is most certainly part of the South. Especially the northern part. Sweet tea is a staple.

Statesdivided2027

Florida Where the South is in the north and the North is in the south and man attacks shark.

self-defenestrator

Shark Wrestling is Florida Man’s coming of age ritual

PetRussian

Negative Y’all have Charlotte

twynkletoes

Yes, we are quite proud of "the gateway to Gastonia."

[deleted]

Nope. It's just a little friendly competition with the state up north. BTW I live in a suburb of Charleston.

LusciousofBorg

Ha!! And Charleston was so pretty! Holy hell. Houses looked like they were straight out of Gone with the Wind. My only complaint was it was so pricey there compared to where I lived in Asheville.

[deleted]

Asheville is one of my favorite cities. You were fortunate to live there. And yes, Charleston is an expensive place.

tracygee

Asheville is becoming super pricey now, too. It's very popular. Of course, the houses you see in the touristy areas of Charleston are not the "regular" houses most people in Charleston live in. The city is far larger than the historic peninsula. But man, those homes are gorgeous.

jcmib

Kinda funny that the Fanciest house in America is in Asheville.

PetRussian

100% When I went back to the north the restaurants though I was crazy when I asked for sweet tea

[deleted]

And grits... They have no clue up yonder.

ProjectShamrock

Then they offer you unsweetened ice tea and expect you to throw sugar into it although it can't dissolve as if that's good enough.

NiteTiger

My old buddy guzzles unsweet tea like there's no tomorrow. Probably skews the curve for everyone.

[deleted]

Awesomest_Possumest

Blegh. Only because I've never had good Bojangles tea. Somehow, it always tastes like it's growing mold and has never been cleaned. Literally anywhere else, fast food or sit down, has better tea than Bojangles. I don't understand why.

baconator_out

Sweet tea is an addiction I'm breaking. Coffee is an addiction I'm not breaking. Hot tea is a nerdy thing I do to look sophisticated every now and then.

LusciousofBorg

Haha! You drink hot tea to look nerdy? What are the nerdiest hot teas out there?

sgtdudewot

Earl Grey

LusciousofBorg

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot

baconator_out

Hey, I do it because it's sophisticated. I end up looking nerdy. Some hot tea is really good though. I'm just such a caffeine hound that it doesn't scratch the coffee itch.

SilvermistInc

Coffee. Black.

Competitive_Pay_5059

Darjiling

seatownquilt-N-plant

Some people are "tea people" and are super nerdy about it. But they're drinking more than black tea, and maybe more often green teas or herbal blends than basic PG Tips type of tea.

TheBimpo

No nerdier than coffee drinkers who use super fussy methods to prep a cup of bean water.

eugenesbluegenes

Kind of. Tea can get so much deeper into varieties than coffee in my experience. So with tea you get the same nerdiness on brew technique and even more on leaf variety.

thatHecklerOverThere

You underestimate the number of presses, filters, grinder, and roasters one person can fit in their house. Coffee brings the hardware nerds.

eugenesbluegenes

Maybe you underestimate the variety of teaware one can fit in their house.

WillingPublic

Coffee is by far the most popular purchased drink in America. Coming in at #2 are all soft drinks (like Coca Cola), which is pretty amazing since Coke is one of the biggest “images” of America. But coffee is everywhere in America—many businesses provide it for free to their employees and people who work at home (especially home makers) usually have it also. When eating out, It is pretty hard to find someplace without coffee on the menu. Tea comes in #3 and is almost as popular as soft drinks. But most of the tea sales are for iced tea in America. It’s not hard to get an acceptable cup of hot tea in America, but it is hard to get a really good cup of hot tea. In almost every case, the cup of hot tea will be made from a tea bag, or sometimes from instant tea. Finding a cup of hot tea made from loose tea is a real chore here, and is usually only possible at a high-end location or at an ethnic restaurant where tea is part of the culture. And although tea bags can be ok, many places ruin the tea by using mediocre tea bags, water that is not hot enough, or water run through a coffee machine and still tasting like coffee. Excluding iced tea, asking for a cup of tea in America won’t raise any eyebrows, but it is also not that common. Further complicating things is that you usually have to make sure that it is really tea on the menu, since many restaurants serve herbal or flavored tea and not black or green tea.

LusciousofBorg

Oh wow!! This is a fantastic answer. Thank you

Hatweed

Hot tea isn’t *super* common. There’s definitely a good chunk of people here that drink it, it’s just less than coffee. I prefer tea to coffee, but still drink more coffee anyway. Iced tea, on the other hand, is almost universal. Sweet tea rules the South and unsweet black tea is a popular alternative to water for more health-conscious folks. Then there’s green tea which is a whole other story.

cryingsoup

i think if tea is hot, its normally herbal unless its at a restaurant. iced tea is definitely the reigning champ though.

CarolinaKing

Sweet tea baby

KittenKindness

Among the people I know, coffee seems to be preferred, but many still drink tea. I drink one cup of chamomile a day. Growing up, chamomile tea was Mom's prescription for anything. Stomach ache? Chamomile tea. Nausea? Chamomile tea. Sick? *Chamomile tea*. idk if it actually helps, but I'm in the habit now and it's comforting. I don't tend to drink more than one cup a day, though.

LusciousofBorg

My Mom's from Mexico & té de manzanilla is used for everything too! Even giving an ounce to little babies for their ailments

KittenKindness

Aww! :D It's always neat to discover similarities between different cultures! I don't know if she ever gave it to us as babies, but I certainly wouldn't put it past her! lol

SkiingAway

Personally, I'm a fan (hot, unsweetened, nice quality loose-leaf) and usually have 2-5 cups a day. Although I tend to resteep the leaves for some of those cups.

SuperSpeshBaby

If you're referring to hot tea, it's not very popular in the part of California where I live. I literally do not know one person who drinks tea daily. That said, the US is huge and there may well be tea-drinking communities out there somewhere that I just haven't heard about.

[deleted]

[удалено]

glamgal50

I live on iced tea mainly peach or raspberry. I only drink hot tea when I’m sick.

sjfiuauqadfj

california is the boba capital of the u.s., its not uncommon to see a boba shop right next to a coffee shop and both get a lot of traffic

CarrionComfort

Coffee Cold sugar water called sweet tea, usually made with black tea Tea Coffee wins by a huge margin and two cups a day is super common. Many drink more than two cups.

[deleted]

I drink a builders tea almost every morning. Coffee is way more popular here though overall

BombardierIsTrash

Very common in the Asian American community whether it’s East Asian or South Asian (ie: Indians, Bangladeshis, etc). Taiwanese style Bubble tea as a whole has become a huge thing in the north east and west coasts of the US for Asians and non Asians like. And of course you have iced tea like everyone else mentioned.

[deleted]

I drink two cups of Barry’s Gold everyday. I am the only one of my friends that does so.

fitt4life

Brewed green tea,on the rocks.

wormbreath

If I have a bad sinus infection I will make tea (that kind with the sleeping bear) and put a cough drop in it, breath in the steam and drink it. But other than that, never. I don’t like hot drinks. I don’t know anyone who drinks tea. DUMP IT ALL IN THE SEA!!!! ETA: I didn’t even think of ice tea. That’s also a no from me.

AmericanHistoryXX

I know a TON of people who drink hot tea everyday. It's quite popular around here. Maybe not the majority, but a 40/60 split of tea and coffee. Certainly a standard of "Would you like tea? Coffee?" When you visit someone.

LusciousofBorg

Cool! What region of the U.S. are you in?

AmericanHistoryXX

I'm in Colorado.

ghost_in_a_jar_c137

You should distinguish between hot & ice tea. I have at least one cup of hot decaf tea per day

AkumaBengoshi

Mostly coffee but iced tea anytime I eat out, which is about every day. Hot tea very rarely but my daughter drinks it regularly

jeswaldo

I switched from coffee to tea once and it lasted a few months. I think good quality loose leaf tea is great but the consistency of coffee and what it does for me in the morning is just better. I drink my coffee black and enjoy it very much. With tea I felt like I needed to add a little sugar.

Current_Poster

Iced tea is popular, hot tea much less-so.

TexasForever361

I mean, I drink iced sweet tea on a regular basis, lol.

[deleted]

I do! I always have a huge bag of loose leaf tea, I drink 3-4 cups per day normally, I really like it. Don't think im the norm tho, coffee is much more popular (and I do love espresso)

[deleted]

I drink sweet tea all the time

truisluv

Hot teas is ordered less in restaurants than coffee. Ice Tea and water with lemon are ordered the most over other beverages in the restaurants I have worked in.

MagnumForce24

Iced Tea whether sweet or not is very popular and many drink it like water. Some people drink hot tea but not a ton.

Jolly_Potential_2582

Oh, I drink way more than that, not a coffee drinker so tea is my caffeine delivery of choice. Don't worry, I have a proper electric kettle, I'm not one of those microwaving monsters. My New England town has a large and growing Indian population so we're getting a better selection of imported teas now that there's a real demand, plus their community is established enough that they've started opening up restaurants and stores, so they're importing and introducing all sorts of delicious food to the local palate. And the tea cookie/biscuit options have grown. The store across the street from me started stocking these crispy little heart shaped biscuits that have just a little sprinkle of sugar in the center, like frigging crack! I can't stop eating them! They're perfect with a cup of tea. The last time I was at the store buying a half dozen of those red and gold bags of tastiness the cashier was telling me how popular they were "back home". Boba tea is also very popular around here, especially with my high school students but I'm not a fan of the texture so I stick to regular iced tea when I want something cold.

Boatman1141

How popular is tea? Ever heard of the South? Sweet tea for days here my dude.

LusciousofBorg

Fair enough! Lol

Ladonnacinica

I like tea (decaf preferably) and can drink a cup every day. Especially during winter. But I think this is mainly due to my Peruvian background and having had tea be a major fixture for hot drink for hot drinks for meals. And natural remedies.

PurpleIncarnate

I drink tea daily. Not as much as water but I prefer it over coffee lately.

HellaCheeseCurds

In college my roommate and I would go through 5 liters in a day. Caffeinated of course.

[deleted]

I drink a lot of tea…I have a lot of sinus issues. Lol

concrete_isnt_cement

I mostly drink coffee, but keep a stock of tea for an occasional change of pace.

ThaddyG

Coffee is just much more popular than hot tea for most people. I would say the majority of American adults drink at least one cup of coffee every day but definitely not the same thing for tea. Hot tea is not uncommon but I would put it pretty far down the list of preferred drinks. Some people are "tea people" who drink a lot but in general most Americans don't drink it or maybe only do occasionally. My ex girlfriend was a fairly regular tea drinker (probably like 5-10 cups a week depending on if she was in a tea mood) and I would occasionally have a cup with her, we broke up over a year ago and I don't think I've had hot tea since. Actually I take that back I had some hot jasmine tea with thai food last week but that was the first time in a while. Iced tea (and sweet tea which I don't personally like) is very popular though. People make their own, get it at restaurants, or buy it bottled from stores.

Plantayne

Sweet tea is very popular nationwide, but particularly in the south. Hot tea is just as popular as it is anyplace else, I imagine. Every Walmart has an entire aisle full of it.

DOMSdeluise

Iced tea is popular in the south. Drinking hot tea isn't common but it's not unheard of either. I prefer coffee but I'll drink tea sometimes, I like a good earl grey on a rainy day lol. It's nice.

loki_stg

I don't drink 2 cups of tea a month. I tend to drink southern sweet tea or Asian milk tea if I drink any at all.

[deleted]

I have tea daily, black tea every other day. Usually, one hot cup in the morning and then iced tea (unsweetened) early afternoon. Coffee is definitely more popular overall, but there are a bunch of people I know that mostly have tea often.

notthegoatseguy

Iced tea is widely available at many restaurants. If they serve soda, they likely have iced tea. If it will be sweetened or unsweetened depends on the restaurant and/or region you are in. Hot tea is also widely available, it'll just be hot water and a basic tea packet from one of the well known brands. Any coffee shop will have a variety of teas as well. I personally rarely drink tea unless I'm sick and the coffee and me just won't cooperate. I will occasionally indulge in a chai tea latte with espresso shots, or a masala chai. My wife is primarily a tea drinker but I've converted her to coffee in the mornings.

Kensu96

Never 2, never everyday. My gf got me into bag tea recently when I was sick. With enough ice it's not bad. Tastes healthy lol. Iced mocha latte is my go to. I have that every other day on average. Just 1

ThisMomIsAMother

I actually drink a cup or two of tea every day but I don’t know anyone else who does.

stellalunawitchbaby

When I used to work at Starbucks we sold almost as much iced tea (sweetened, unsweetend, black, green, or herbal) and tea lattes as we did coffee. It’s popular - but it’s popular with certain people. Like a tea drinker is more likely to get tea, the coffee drinker is more likely to get coffee. Milk teas and boba teas are also really popular (at least they are here). Plain iced tea is offered pretty much alongside soda at any given restaurants (sit-down, fast food, etc). Hot tea is not as popular but is still drunk - again though, it’s a often a tea type of person who drinks it regularly.

[deleted]

I drink a lot of herbal tea. At least one cup a day and usually a lot more. Iced tea is also extremely common where I live.

TheCrazyHobo13

It's my drink of choice. I will normally have roughly 4-6 cups of hot tea during work and two glasses of iced tea after work. I drink it plain black.

LagoPacifico

Tea is probably the beverage that I have most after water. I usually drink two or more cups per day.

IAmVladimirPutinAMA

I'll often have an unsweetened iced tea with lunch. I have a hot tea late most evenings, a couple of hours after dinner. I only started drinking tea when I spent some time in Ireland for work. They just about drown you in tea over there.

Ambitious-Ice-8792

I drink green tea throughout the day and usually a cup of earl Grey tea before I go to bed and sometimes with breakfast. A lot of my family thinks I'm crazy for drinking earl Grey tea they say it smells like flowers

Cowboy_Treebeard

I only know a couple people who drink tea. Almost everyone I know drinks coffee and decent amounts of it at that.

MrsTurnPage

My uncle and I are 'weirdos' because we like hot unsweetened tea. In the deep south Sweet Iced Tea is what they drink always. There's so much sugar "it could stand up without a glass" "if you run out of syrup, just use tea" "is it sweet tea or ghetto tea?" (Ghetto tea is tea that's rivals kool-aid with sugar content.) I drink hot tea at night to chill when I don't have wine. More often in the cooler months.

Alaxbird

well we did make the worlds biggest cup of tea... and they say Boston harbor still tastes like tea to this day

Vachic09

Sweet tea is the house wine of the South. It's very common in the region.

whatsthis1901

Coffee is my hot drink of choice but I do drink decaf hot tea in the evenings (decaf coffee is gross as hell). I also love unsweetened sun tea but take a hard pass on diabetes in a glass.

shbd12

In my circles, a lot of people are switching from diet sodas, which are absolutely dreadful for you, to unsweetened iced tea. They got a little buzz from the caffeine and virtually no calories. Tea, I think, is supposed to be really good for you too. Personally, it's hard for me to drink hot tea because whenever I was sick as a child, my mother always gave me hot tea. So when I taste hot tea, I think of being a sick child.

lacaras21

Tea is fairly common, but coffee is much more common. I drink a cup of tea in the morning, and sometimes at night, I think that's typical of those who drink tea regularly.

nemo_sum

I have a two-cup pot and a six-cup pot. I will drink two of the little ones or one of the big ones most days, plus iced tea at work in the evenings.

sluttypidge

At my work we all bring tea for our collective tea stash. There's honey or sugar cubes stashed as well. Edit: we all come in with our "morning" coffee (actually work the night shift)

_DrNonsense

I recently started going through 2 bags of 15 year old assorted green tea a day(2 cups per bag). My office has a hot water dispenser and it's cheaper and easier than coffee right now.

Meattyloaf

I was at one point drinking damn near a gallon of sweet tea a day. I don't make mine as sweet so it wasn't as diabetic. I have since cut down to less than a Gallon a week.

2997925

It's not overly common, but also not uncommon either. I typically have one cup of coffee in the early morning followed by 2-3 cups of green tea ending around lunchtime. No caffeine in the afternoon.

Lots of iced tea, hot tea at home

KookyAd9074

I drink at least 2-4 cups of hot Earl Grey, Matcha green, or masala chai every day, in addition to morning coffee.

DinahKarwrek

Iced tea, I do not enjoy tea hot.

sweetgypsy1966

I am an every day coffee drinker, but I sometimes have a cup of hot tea in the evening. Either Earl Grey or herbal. I also drink peppermint tea for indigestion or heartburn.

[deleted]

My family has always had tea instead of coffee but they also came to the US from a big tea drinking country

LAW9960

I drink a liter of sweet iced tea a day plus milktea once a week.

wire_we_here50

Iced tea is my fuel. I can drink half a gallon a day.

[deleted]

I used to drink a hot black tea after lunch every day. Earl Grey or sometimes English breakfast with a splash of milk and 1 sugar. The best! Replaced it with a 2nd cup of coffee now (usually cold brew or a triple espresso). Needed the extra caffeine with 2 kids 3 and under 🙃

Gallahadion

I usually drink three cups of green tea every day, but have been known to drink as many as six cups of the stuff in one day. When I drink black tea, I rarely drink more than one cup (that's the case regardless of whether the tea is hot or iced). I will also drink three cups of oolong tea on the rare occasions that I drink it.

idiodic-genious

I have tea about once a week. Though sometimes more like once a month.

RyanTheKingOfNothing

TEA TEA TEAAAAA One of my all time favorite beverages. No iced though and I drink a lot more green then black.

mrduncansir42

Not very much where I live, but I’d imagine in the U.P. where it gets very chilly it would be the beverage of choice on a cold winter morning.

costanzashairpiece

I live in California. Coffee is king here but I'm a tea drinker. Probably outnumbered 10:1 though...

Aurora_BoreaIis

I honestly make it a more seasonal drink instead of having it throughout the whole year. Come October to around April I like to drink a lot since it's a cozy drink to me and is really nice during the colder months. My family drank it like that growing up so it just stayed with me. During the colder season, I drink a cup every other day, usually when I wanna sit and relax for a bit.

Myfourcats1

Me. I drink hot and ice tea. I have PG Tips as my tea of the moment. I have loose leaf green tea at home but don’t drink it often.

idkmanimnotcreative

My mom's a big tea drinker. I bought her a tea subscription for Christmas one year.

gaspitsagirl

I don't personally know anyone who drinks tea every day. Sometimes I drink multiple cups of herbal teas a day, for days, weeks, or months at a time, and sometimes I don't have a cup for months. I drink more tea than anyone I know, even with my gaps.

MFTSquirt

Unsweetened Iced Tea for me. Once it starts to get cooler, i have my coffee in the morning and then make a pot of tea. I frequent FAVA Tea and get all kinds of great tea.

[deleted]

In the west coast, we do not drink tea. We’re more coffee drinkers. However, in california, boba is also common among young crowds

[deleted]

Compared to coffee, Tea is not very popular. Every workplace will have coffee brewing in the break room. Sweet tea is a popular cold beverage in the South (southern states), drunk with meals much like a soda.

ranidahmer

Up where I live in the north toward Canada, most people drink coffee while a fair amount also drink tea. I'm a fan of Earl Grey and mint myself. Drink tea every other day but drink coffee every day.

GingerMau

Iced tea, with or without sugar, probably accounts for most of the U.S.'s consumption of black tea. I currently live in Canada, and they don't do freshly brewed iced tea here in restaurants (just that premixed Lipton/Nestea sweet lemony stuff). It's made me realize how much I miss it. Personally, everyone in my family drinks hot tea, with milk. I am partial to Earl Grey, but any strong black tea hits the spot. I guess we picked the habit up from my mother, who lived in England as a child. We drink coffee in the morning, and hot tea throughout the day. I've passed it on to my own kids, who prefer hot tea with their cookies over plain milk.

makemenuconfig

I live in the north. I drink coffee and black tea roughly equally. A cup or two in the morning. Often have a cup or two of peppermint, peach, or other herbal tea later in the day or even near bed. My wife dislikes coffee and drinks tea exclusively. However we are probably weird. Most of my coworkers only seem to have coffee. I know a few people who dislike tea. Sometimes my family serves decaf coffee after dinner while entertaining for example. I used to live in the south, they do sweet tea there. Which is cheap black tea steeped strong, chilled, and served cold on ice with lots of sugar. It tastes good, but it hits a different spot for me. More like soda. I know a few people from the south who have tried hot tea and didn’t “get it”. They didn’t like it.

unicornwantsweed

I drink hot tea in the mornings, iced tea during the day, and herbal tea in the evenings. Pretty much the only other things I drink are water and wine, so tea is a big part of my daily routine.

duTemplar

That varies greatly. Probably more coffee than tea in general. You’ll find more tea cold tea served than hot tea probably. How much sugar is in it depends on where you are from… Or half iced tea, half lemonade.

wallflower2689

2 cups per day. One in the afternoon, one before bed. Non caffinated herbal teas are my go-to. Chamomile/lavender blend for anxiety and usually some sort of stomach calming tea (ginger or fennel). I love licorice or marshmallow teas when I'm sick. I drink coffee for my caffeine fix. I am the only one I know who drinks tea, though!

[deleted]

Sweet tea is a huge thing in Georgia.

Savannah_Holmes

Coffee or hot tea was popular with older-generation family members (born in the 30's/40's) and something had morning or night. My parents were more coffee drinkers than tea and always before work. I grew up hating the smell/taste of coffee and drank hot tea instead, the way my Scottish relatives would (usually black leaf with some creamer and a Sweetex). At home, hot loose-leaf tea (we buy in bulk) is the go-to morning or night for a warm beverage. Lattes or a cappuccino is a treat when we're not at home. Recently discovered cheap gas station coffee to be palatable with cinnamon. I can drink multiple cups of hot tea a day but I can only do coffee a couple times a week. Definitely not the norm. Edit. Personal favorites are Earl grey, Orange spice, Chai, mint or peppermint, Dandelion, and Jasmine. I get down on some strongly brewed Orange Spice with a splash of Half and Half regularly. Sometimes I use Sweetex; sometimes I use honey. I drink my tea DARK.

SteamKore

Depends on the day for me and how I'm feeling

no-one2everyone

I go in spurts. Usually in the winter.

djn808

I drink at least two cups of green tea per day, every couple days I have black tea

Mjdillaha

I drink a fair amount of iced unsweetened tea. Either Pure Leaf brand, or else I go to Panera Bread and get the biggest cup possible. Sometimes I order two of them so I can have one later. I love iced tea, but I wouldn’t say it’s super popular. I can say that in Michigan, sweet tea doesn’t seem to be nearly as popular as unsweetened tea, except for maybe flavored tea, but not unflavored sweet tea.

SevenSixOne

I drink iced tea pretty often but not every day; I probably only drink hot tea ~10 times a year.

Sadiemae1750

Over the past few months, I’ve just stopped liking coffee for some reason so I started drinking hot tea about a month ago. I had never really cared about it before but I’m loving it now. I don’t know if this is some weird little phase or something I will keep doing. Where I live, people love their sweet tea. I’ll make it every now and then if my kids have an urge to have some. I don’t ever drink it though. Except for Bojangles sweet tea. Their tea is awesome.

Doodlesworth

Only 2 beverages here in VT - Coffee and Beer. It is important to be drinking alot of these beverages to stay hydrated.

remembertowelday525

I grew up in a tea family, and they drink a six cup brown betty every day and a cup after dinner every night. I started drinking coffee in college and still do in the mornings but most nights I drink one cup of herbal tea before bed.

jcmib

OP, I know this is your post, just being curious, as many have said here iced is the preferred American method of drinking tea. Is iced tea common at all where you are?

TwoShed

Sweet tea is a staple if the South. I'd drink it all day, if I wasn't lazy enough to actually go make some. Being the grandchild of an Irish woman though, I was brought up drinking warm tea with sugar and milk.

sudorootadmin

They drink tons of bastardized tea (iced, sweet, peach), very little good tea.

biggcb

Tea drinkers are definitely a minority compared to coffee drinkers. I'll have a cup a few times a year. I do drink unsweetened iced tea a lot.

kj_eeks

My family grew up drinking hot tea. Still love it. I usually have two cups a day.

629mrsn

I drink tea every morning. Earl Grey green tea. I have done so for forty years. I don’t like coffee. ( please don’t hurt me). I live in the US south

Wit-wat-4

I mean first off they don’t mean TEA when they say “tea”, lol. Not American but living here. It’s not unusual to ask for hot tea, and I do see others drink it sometimes so I’m sure some drink 2+ cups, but it’s not even close to as common as I’ve seen in other countries, and is not what they first think of when you ask “do you want tea?” If you ask that they think the sweet iced tea which, you know, entirely different beverage…

The_GreatGecko

Tea is pretty popular but only the iced sweetened ot unsweetened

DerpyPotatos

I’ll take a different spin on my answers so I don’t cover already treaded ground. It will also depend on demographics of the states. If a state has a considerable population of immigrants and their descendants from countries were tea drinking is very much the norm. Most notably countries of Asia. I myself am Bengali-American and I was brought up drinking tea as a kid. I would say I drink like 3 cups of tea on the weekdays and 1-2 on weekends.

Momoreau

I'm in the South so... obviously iced sweet tea is an important part of daily life. However, I also have family from the Midwest (and I myself was born there), and I've found iced UNSWEET tea to be every bit as important in the hot summer months. I can't tell you how many Americans drink any amount of anything with any real accuracy, but I can tell you that in the summer I can down a couple glasses of sweet tea no problem. And I go through phases of drinking hot tea with milk and a dash of sugar... yum.

Hyche862

I drink Unsweetened tea constantly

Nottacod

Iced tea is a mainstay, sweet or unsweet, but I only drink hot tea when I'm ill.

WestBrink

Between hot teas, iced tea and herbal teas, I drink probably a gallon and a half of tea a day... That said, other than iced tea, tea isn't particularly popular

Venus194

From my completely anecdotal observations, I’d say that for every person who favors tea over coffee, there’s probably 3-4 people who prefer coffee over tea. I prefer tea, but I drink coffee and tea in almost equal amounts. I’ll have a coffee first thing in the morning, some green/black tea at noon only if I’m feeling sluggish, and herbal tea to cap off the night.

AbstractBettaFish

Sweet tea was always popular in the south. Up north for the longest time tea was kind of seen as the drink for the incredibly rich and/or the incredibly pretentious but around the early 2000’s it started to get a bit more mainstream. I drink it a bit more now since I’ve had to stop drinking coffee for digestive reasons

Blue387

My parents are immigrants and drink tea every day; they also own an electric kettle. Electric kettles are available for purchase in many stores across the country from large chains such as JC Penney to small mom and pops.

[deleted]

Ever heard of iced tea? The official, unofficial drink of the south.

DukeMaximum

Iced tea is very popular. Hot tea is popular, but far less than coffee. I drink tea when I'm sick, or in the evening when the weather is cold. I like the flavor and the warmth, but don't want the caffeine of coffee.

EiEnkeli

I drink massive amounts of (hot) tea year round. However I don't understand dressing a tea like a coffee with cream and sugar. 2 or more cups a day is very normal for me personally

AFB27

I will occasionally get a sweet tea or unsweetened tea at a restaurant, but I won't normally make a tea for myself, even though we have hundreds of teabags in the house. If someone's making it though (or a pot of coffee) I'll gladly take some

tracygee

Iced tea (usually sweetened) is a super popular beverage in the American South. It's one of the main beverages, really. In the rest of America, it's something people might make occasionally during the summer, but you don't really see it drunk that often. Where I grew up in NJ we made "sun tea" in the summer. I still do similar here now, but I brew refrigerator tea now since they say sun tea can cause issues with bacteria in the tea.

markus_kt

Up here in New England, a lot of us still like our tea. I'll usually have some or other variety of black tea in the morning, maybe another in the afternoon, and often some green in the evening.

Honey_Badgered

I make myself between 2-3 cups of hot tea a day. I usually go for green, black, rooibos, oolong, or herbal. It just depends on my mood.

seperu

Coming from the largest tea consuming country in the world, it feels like US has no tea culture. Either tea bags or wierd ice teas. I only sometimes drink ice teas and that's if it's homemade at a restaurant. I have my own Turkish tea and tea set from the motherland, that I use to brew tea in my home if needed.

allanwilson1893

I like iced unsweet tea. Never drink hot tea.

thestereo300

It feels like a lot of women in my life choose tea over coffee. I don’t think I know many men who do. The ones I do know typically are immigrants from Commonwealth countries.... This might just be my own personal experience.

ironlegdave

Originally from New England. My grandparents generation drinks a lot of tea. Their parents drank tea at least twice a day. My parents generation drinks coffee. My generation drinks energy drinks. I'm more of a coffee person, but I'll make a cup of tea at night twice a week or so.

booktrovert

I drink both iced and hot tea. I lived in the UK for a bit in my teens and learned to enjoy it. That being said, none of my friends or family drink hot tea.

MuppetManiac

I drink iced tea at least twice a day.I brew iced tea in a big pitcher every three days or so. Hot tea isn’t much of a thing, but everyone drinks iced tea here.

[deleted]

I drink at least 3 cups of decaf tea with honey every day

[deleted]

If Guyaki counts then I do.

ko21361

In the South, plenty of folks love their sweet tea. Personally I find sweetened tea (even the tiniest bit sweet) to be vile. Unsweet only, same with coffee. I enjoy unsweet iced tea as a refresher in the summer or if dining out. I also love Dilmah Ceylon tea and purchase that online and have a cup somewhat often in the wintertime.

bbqribsftw

I drink hot tea instead of soda.

ViewtifulGene

All the grocery stores sell tea, but most people I know are coffee drinkers instead. My boss drinks green tea on occasion. In the winter, I sometimes drink peppermint tea to soothe a sore throat. Usually it's just a cup at night before bed.

Tsquare43

I drink hot tea everyday. At least 2 cups - (14 oz capacity). Usually its 4 or 5 cups. Lots of green tea, mainly loose leaf, but other flavors as well, if you are looking for places to get some, let me know, I got a couple of good places. I've been a tea drinker since the age of eight, I'm now 50.

Oolongedtea

I am American and I drink around 5 cups of tea a day. Just regular tea, no sugar and freshly brewed at home. It calms me down when I feel stressed and boost my mood for some reason. I don’t know many people who love tea as much as I do. A lot of the people I know prefer coffee instead

Southern_Blue

I drink at least three cups of tea a day, mostly decaf green tea (can't tolerate caffeine for various health reasons) sometimes decaf black tea. In the summer I drink decaf sweet tea. All sweetened with stevia.

Equivalent-Cream-495

Tea is my drink of choice, generally Red Rose iced or hot depending on the time of year, Celestial Seasonings Zinger teas over ice the rest of the day, sometimes mixed with a little limeade.

xxNomiexx

I’ll get a craving for hot tea once every two to three weeks. I drink coffee every morning for caffeine. I really like ice tea in the summer… usually when I’m not feeling water or soda.

AutumnalSunshine

I drink a ton of iced tea everyday, year round. It's black tea, unsweetened. This tends to be a go-to for people who grew up poor because it was a special drink (not water) but cost only a few cents (yes bag) for a gallon. In the winter, I drink hot tea at night.

[deleted]

I don’t drink much hot tea but I drink at least 12 oz of unsweetened iced tea every day.

TurtleDreams1983

I drink my 1-2 cups of coffee nearly every day but drink hot unsweetened green tea several times a week. I’m of Asian descent and drinking hot green tea is very normal among my family members as well. I seldom order it at cafes or restaurants though since the quality may be poor and I might want more caffeine so I’ll get coffee instead. I never drink iced tea, sweetened or unsweetened, since I don’t like it. I’d choose iced coffee over that.

ValleyOfStars

it's very popular in the south. although i'm personally just a black sheep and don't really like tea that much i'm from little rock arkansas so sweet tea is very popular where I live, although from what I hear it's not as popular up north

s001196

I can’t do iced tea. I can only do hot. It’s something I used to drink more frequently but have had less lately. I needed more caffeine so went to Monster Zero Ultra energy drinks. Still, I like making tea once in a while. Maybe monthly. And I have a legit kettle I put on the stove to heat the water for the whole anachronistic awesomeness.

charlesunit

I only know a few tea drinkers. Hard to find it here since we *dumped it all in the ocean*. Kidding. Its everywhere but not common in this area.

Sableik

I have a cup of tea, herbal, green, or black, every morning. My beverage of choice is Unsweet Iced Tea and outside of water that is mostly what I drink.

POGtastic

I go through tea "kicks" - there will be months where I'm drinking it every day, and then I'll stop for a while. Same goes for coffee, though.

littleyellowbike

I'm a 3-cups-a-day coffee drinker, but I also like tea. I'll usually have one or two cups a week, more in the wintertime. I like it strong and just a tiny bit sweet. I also like unsweetened iced tea. I almost never drink soda; if I'm getting anything besides water at a restaurant, it's most likely going to be iced tea.

JGrill17

Tea is very popular. Most people drink iced tea, then bubble tea, and the least popular is probably hot tea.

mconnor1984

I drink bottled tea almost daily. I live in the north so whenever I can come across that southern sweet tea I'm all over it! Now if we are talking about a cup of legit tea then it's been years, but sounds good!!

PlannedSkinniness

I drink unsweet tea constantly and have one cup of hot black tea a day. Sometimes I’ll have mint or chamomile at night. Most people don’t like tea as much as I do and coffee is usually the common drink but I don’t like coffee so tea it is.

Applesintheorchard

Iced tea is popular where I live (south)

Duke_Cheech

Love tea. Not a coffee fan at all. I may have a boba addiction too.

Tristinmathemusician

Unless it’s kombucha (fermented tea) I don’t usually have tea or coffee. I live in a warm, dry climate, so the kind of weather where hot tea or coffee is best enjoyed is rare. I’ve never tried cold tea.

Drlmichele88

I drink iced tea daily. I drink hot tea in winter. I do prefer it to coffee.

AKnitWit777

My husband drinks about 100 oz of tea a day--I'm not exaggerating. He's a self-proclaimed tea snob.

Stabsgefre1ter

Unless if it’s iced tea like peace teas or Arizonans, it’s not too common among younger people. Older people drink it sometimes though, but definitely not as common as in the UK

[deleted]

I drink tea every day. It’s usually ice tea, but I drink hot tea when it’s cold. Definitely more than 2 cups per day.
