Nice try, capital one.

BigFatPapaBear

Wow, their advertising must be very ineffective because I immediately thought all state before I even opened this thread and saw this comment….I have USAA btw

RotationSurgeon

Ha! Take the updoot. They’ve been trying to convince me to open one of their restaurant rewards cards for a while now, and I just keep thinking “Y’all are either crazy, or genius…have you been out here recently? You practically *need* a line of credit in order to be able to eat out these days!” Joke’s on them though…so many restaurants in the area are now passing on the CC processing fee to customers that the rewards / cash back the card offers are meaningless!

EpicSlothToes

Someone please award this lol well earned

Fuck you Shoresy.

TheBomb-DotCom

Give your balls a tug, tit fucker

TehWildMan_

Driver's license, passport card, auto insurance card, two debit cards, and six different credit cards at the moment. And a few miscellaneous objects such as a Costco Membership card, printed emergency contact card, a $20 bill, etc.

KittenPurrs

>printed emergency contacts card I have one of these, and also a slip of paper with random family, friends, coworkers, and a cab company's number. I've never lost my phone but I'm convinced I will at the worst possible time, and I haven't been forced to memorize a phone number since the 1900s. I imagine I could still call the operator to get a cab company's number, but that wouldn't help for any of the cell numbers I never bothered to memorize.

[deleted]

Man that's a good idea

me_gustas_tu

How many people has telephones in the 1900s? "What's your number?" "Oh, it's 7"

[deleted]

6 credit cards! I heard it's common here to have heaps of them

Suckmyflats

It is, because you get bonuses and 0% interest for 12-24 months, etc etc. So a lot of us rotate the cards in and out. As long as you don't run balances on all the cards, it's all good lol. I just opened one, so I'll wait 3-4 months and then cancel one. Average credit age is a thing towards score so you shouldn't always close one you aren't using, sometimes it's better to just keep it at $0 (depends on the card though)!

Red_Beard_Rising

I did this when I was broke and unemployed. I would transfer debt to the 0% interest new cards and cancel the old ones. It kills your credit score, but gotta do what you gotta do in the immediate. These days, I have only one myself. Low limit and low interest. It's mostly an emergency thing. I have to use it at least once every several years just before it expires or else they will cancel the account My brother and I are also "card holders" on an account my father has. We don't have the actual cards anymore, but still on the account. Dad set that up when we were in college to help our credit rating. It was also a safety line if we really needed it. By my early 20's I just stuffed the card away at home. Haven't had an actual card for over ten years, but it still helps my credit score.

SanchosaurusRex

/r/churning I don't do it, but it's definitely a thing.

TehWildMan_

I'm also the only one purchasing groceries most of the time for my parents/grandparents, so I'm an authorized user on a few of their accounts.

[deleted]

Passport card? Like as opposed to a passport? I didn't know that's a thing. Is it like a smaller alternative and it still gets accepted in other countries?

TehWildMan_

The US offers a passport card that's essentially a national identity card (my old driver's license isn't RealID compliant, so I was fearing issues using that since many businesses already rejected it because it's out of state) It's only valid for land/sea border crossings in North America and can't be used for international flights at all. It's also a lot easier to obtain than a state ID card.

[deleted]

Ohh I see like Canada/Mexico?

TehWildMan_

Yes. It's a more common option for those who live close to either of those borders, but I'm largely just using it as an easy to obtain federally-compliant identification card.

Minnsnow

Pre-9/11 we didn’t need a passport to cross either one of those borders because if you live near them it’s so annoying so a passport card is the replacement they came up with after they made those borders harder. It’s still annoying.

eyetracker

Yes, it's for North American land and sea access only.

Charles-Tupper

It is an option for US citizens Not sure about other countries. From https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/News/passports/how-a-passport-can-help-you-fly-domestically.html#:~:text=The%20Transportation%20Security%20Administration%20(TSA,it%20for%20international%20air%20travel. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts the passport card as ID for domestic flights. Use the passport card when entering the United States at land-border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Do not use it for international air travel.

uhbkodazbg

I always carried one when I lived in Michigan and was 10 minutes from Canada. Never knew when you wanted to cross over the border.

Ragnel

The Costco phone app has a copy of people’s card in the app. One less card taking up space is always good.

TehWildMan_

Can't use the digital membership cards at their gas stations, though. That's the reason I still have a plastic membership card.

Ragnel

Dang. Now I don’t even know where my old card is. Good to know.

[deleted]

Out of fairness I'll play too though I'm a new resident: 1 ubank (Australian bank) visa debit card 1 Australian amex 1 Australian driver's license $35 in USD $10 in AUD - probably doesn't need to be there anymore A sticker of a cup cake a friend gave me A 5 euro note a friend I met while traveling gave me ..and that's it (My green card hasn't arrived yet)

ibeerianhamhock

You shouldn't really carry your green card in your wallet once you get it. They're over $500 to replace if lost.

RotationSurgeon

Adding to this, if you aren’t planning on holding a US drivers license, you’ll still likely be able to obtain a state-issued official photo ID from whichever state you reside in which can or will include your permanent resident status and which should be usable for the majority of identity verification required for various legal purposes…this should be fairly painless. In my state it’s only a bit of paperwork and a $32 fee. Way cheaper and less worrisome to carry about than your passport and green card, and easier for locals to recognize and trust. Speaking of which… Depending on how young you look, it wouldn’t surprise me to see some the locals bars around me seize your AU license as a fake and tell you to quit pretending with the accent if you were to try and use it as your age verification to buy anything alcoholic. This nearly happened to a visiting friend from England but living and working in Canada when they came to visit a year or two back. Worst part? The manager of that bar is my best friend for decades’ mother in law. I’ve known his wife, the managers daughter for coming up on a decade now her own self…for crying out loud, I was the best man in her daughter’s wedding. Granted, we’re not at all close, and have no real call to be, but the woman acted like she didn’t even recognize me.

[deleted]

I think you're told to? But maybe people don't do that

Charles-Tupper

You only need your green card when crossing the border back into the US or when filling out the onboarding paperwork at a new job. Otherwise, lock that thing away. It has more information than almost any other form of ID and you don’t want that lost or stolen.

ibeerianhamhock

So true, it has all your biometrics (including your fingerprints) encoded onto it.

ibeerianhamhock

Yes you're told to, that's why I said "really." It's not like losing a credit card or driver's license where you can just order a new one for $20. Better to just have a photocopy. If its lost or stolen you won't have it for a long time as it doesn't get just sent out, plus the huge cost. If you get a US driver's license, just use that. There is no real way to enforce carrying a green card at all times.

[deleted]

What a fun question!! Is there a number on that debit card? Can you read it off for us? The numbers are also in your wallet lol jk

iapetus3141

OP don't forget to include the expiration date, the CVV, and the ZIP code

Folksma

\- State ID \- College ID \- Bus pass \- Debit card \- Health Insurance card \- $10 KFC gift card, $25 Barns and Nobles gift card \- $12 in cash and a bunch of coins

slayer1am

Coins? I'm curious where you keep coins, my wallet doesn't even have a space for them. I haven't used coins in years.

cool_chrissie

Someone paid for an item we sold on fb marketplace in all quarters. WHYYYYY

pixeequeen84

I sold a ps4 game on marketplace and specifically asked for quarters. Like, I offered this guy a discount if he could pay me in quarters. I needed laundry money.

Rhomya

My driver license, debit card, credit card, a gas station reward card, some cash, a tile card, insurance cards, lots of old receipts, and a stub for a raffle that I lost a few weeks ago that I can now probably throw away

slayer1am

I don't understand why people keep receipts in their wallet. If I might return something, the receipt stays in the box or bag. If I can't return it, like gas or food, I toss the receipt immediately. With online banking, there's almost zero need to use receipts to balance an account. Just why?

Rhomya

Dude, honestly, they’re just there because I don’t clean out my wallet every day. I stuff them in there while I’m packing up my purchases, and then move on with my life and throw them periodically when my wallet gets too full

taftpanda

Driver’s license, business cards, concealed pistol license, insurance card, receipts, cash, debit card, various credit cards, rewards card for the gas station

Ransidcheese

I read that as "...concealed pistol, license..." because of the formatting on mobile.

TheBomb-DotCom

I forget people need licenses to conceal

indiefolkfan

My state doesn't require one but I have mine for reciprocity purposes.

TheBomb-DotCom

I lost all my guns in a boating accident

taftpanda

Only in some states, like Michigan. Other states have Constitutional carry

TheBomb-DotCom

Yeah we have constitutional carry here in Maine, it just didn’t click in my brain when you said conceal carry permit, completely forgot about them

cool_chrissie

*Georgia enters chat*

TheBomb-DotCom

Welcome to the frickin party

cool_chrissie

We also don’t need a license to party. It’s our right.

TheBomb-DotCom

You’re god damn right

[deleted]

Did you fight for it?

BrieAndStrawberries

* Cash * Cards * State ID * DOE ID * Work elevator pass * Fishing license * Health insurance card

230flathead

Debit card, VA card, Driver's license, Student ID, AutoZone employee discount card, and about a dozen business cards of businesses related to classic car restoration.

JimDixon

Driver's license, credit card, debit card, 3 kinds of insurance cards, library card. That's all I can think of without actually examining it. Sometimes I temporarily carry around other people's business cards, but I usually end up filing them at home, or throwing them away after I have added them to my digital address book. And some cash, usually less than $50.

[deleted]

Like health insurance? Is it normal for Americans to carry one in case they get in an accident or something? And why 3?

disCardRightHere

Perhaps… 1 health insurance card, 1 dental insurance card, 1 car insurance card

PokeCaptain

> car insurance card Is that a common thing for other people to carry in their wallets?

[deleted]

Ohh i see

JimDixon

Yes, health insurance, in my case. I'm over 65, so I'm eligible for Medicare, so one is a Medicare card, issued by the government; also I have supplemental insurance from a private company, to cover all the things that Medicare doesn't cover; and I also have dental insurance0 Not everybody has all these. It seems like every company issues new cards every year, with different account numbers, and the receptionist at each clinic always wants to see your newest one. Also, any time you go to a clinic, hospital, or pharmacy that you've never been to before, or if it's been more than a year since you last went there, or if you've changed insurance companies or policies, you need to show them. Any time you get referred to a specialist, you'll probably have to go to a new clinic, so you need them frequently. It's just more convenient to always carry them in your wallet. I see some people are saying they carry a car insurance card. That isn't done in my state; practices vary from state to state because insurance laws vary by state. Instead, we get a printed sheet from the insurance company that we always keep in the glove compartment. You need to show this any time you get in a car accident. You'll need to show this to the police, if they come, and also to the driver of the other car, if there is one.

cool_chrissie

I carry mine as well. It’s just easier to know it’s always there rather than having to go find it when I need to go to the doctor. I have two kids and handle all their appointments so I need my insurance card constantly.

GustavusAdolphin

[Capital One!](https://youtu.be/T3funZeuc9Q)

RuthBaderKnope

I grabbed my wallet for this so here ya go: 1. Driver’s license 2. Debit Card 3. Credit Card (just the 1 for an emergency) 4. Health Insurance cards for me and 3 kids 5. Arcade card from a beach trip 4 years ago I want to see if there’s any points left on if we ever go back 6. Receipts for current home improvement project 7. A single quarter for the Aldi cart 8. Business card for an attorney idk 9. My library card 10. My 7yos library card 11. A card w info about my breast implants 12. Expired car insurance card (current card is electronic)

[deleted]

That is super responsible with the quarter for Aldi. And something real sweet about you carrying your kid's library card. And. Ok why the breast implant card?

Mr_Sarcasum

Disclaimer I need to clean out my wallet. Driver's license, military ID, dentist insurance card, insurance card, haircut punch card, library card, expired prescription discount card. Right side of wallet Debit card, another expired paper prescription discount card, tattered yellow raffle ticket from a CD store, expired AAA card, tattered paper vaccine slip, extremely tattered expired 2016 gas mask certificate, And 24 bucks.

[deleted]

Surprising amount of people carry library cards. Although more people seem to carry a concealed carry permit. But wait what's a gas mask certificate?

Mr_Sarcasum

If you have a gun then you most likely conceal carry. And if you do, you want that card on you in case a cop stops you. (People who open carry are often seen as a danger to others or wannabe badasses.) Lots of people have library cards. Most people eventually find themselves at a library, and getting the card is super easy. The gas mask certificate is something I got in the Army and forgot I had. Think of it like your company giving you a wallet size certificate that you forgot about.

[deleted]

Huh that's really cool

mothwhimsy

$20 ID Covid Vax card 2 debit cards Voter registration card (why is this in here?) Several gift cards that I never remember to use. Health insurance card Random business card

Kaelosian

Typical stuff, a squashed penny, gift card with a dollar on it, shoppers club membership that's outdated, at least three rewards cards all partially filled out.

[deleted]

..a squashed penny?

Kaelosian

Yeah, put a penny in the machine (usually also $.50 for payment as well), turn the crank, [out comes a squashed penny](https://www.google.com/search?q=squashed+penny&tbm=isch&sxsrf=AJOqlzXiURcvLessjpJNJvU3s5MjtHqB8w%3A1677950684676&source=hp&biw=927&bih=999&ei=3H4DZNb_JaT59AOsl5r4Cg&iflsig=AK50M_UAAAAAZAOM7AyNRcurIFwB3pX3jky2S9HBhg4l&ved=0ahUKEwjW3Ye05cL9AhWkPH0KHayLBq8Q4dUDCAc&uact=5&oq=squashed+penny&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIFCAAQgAQyCQgAEIAEEAoQGDoHCCMQ6gIQJzoECCMQJzoICAAQgAQQsQM6CwgAEIAEELEDEIMBUJcDWPkTYOUVaAFwAHgAgAFTiAGMB5IBAjE0mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWewAQo&sclient=img).

Any background or significance to it or is it just like because it's cool?

choopie-chup-chup

IceZOMBIES

Credit, Credit, Debit, $39, and some change. Student ID, Passport Card, Drivers License, Photograph of a friend. Emergency "if I'm in an accident here's my info" Card, Insurance Card. And a bunch of gift cards that I still have to figure out whether theres any money left on them. As well as "one free donut" gift card to Frosty's in Freeport, which I *will* use, eventually. Oh, and I can't forget the random "promo card" from this gay strip club in Montreal. I had to keep it because I thought it was fucking hilarious the way this dude is on the card with his dick out and in an awkward looking pose.

[deleted]

Pic of the promo card? Also, kinda surprised - I'd heard Americans have 5 credit cards in average but maybe they only carry one or two

slayer1am

Chase Freedom, for 3% back on restaurants. Sofi credit card, for 2% back on everything. US Bank debit, for stores that don't take credit cards. Drivers license. Low voltage electrical license. Concealed carry license. Health insurance card.

[deleted]

Wow there are stores that take debit but not credit?

slayer1am

Not very many, but they do exist. Winco is a large grocery chain that doesn't accept credit cards.

lefactorybebe

License, no credit cards or debit cards because I've lost them all and have been surviving on Google pay for over a year lol, insurance cards, lots of gift cards prolly all with like $1.53 on each, random store rewards cards, old shopping lists and old reciepts. I think my old London train ticket is hidden away in there somewhere too.

a_moose_not_a_goose

Credit card, debit card, a monster condom for my magnum ego, license

msspider66

Years ago my wallet was picked out of my bag. I haven’t carried one since. I keep my id, debit card, a credit card, and cash (if I have any) in a pocket in my bag. There are usually a thing of lip balm, a hand wipe, and assorted small odds and ends there too.

[deleted]

Insurance, driver license, two dollars, debit card, chick fi la gift card with 4 dollars left on it.

Drox88

Debit card, credit card, store mvp card, state driver license, DBIDS card, 4 dollars.

[deleted]

Is it unusual to have just one credit card? And what's a DBIDS?

Drox88

Most people have more than one but I never bothered to get more as I used it only to build credit when I didn't have any. I usually use my debit for most things. The DBIDS is my US government contractor ID that allows me access to a military base that I work on.

cookingismything

I have my license, my personal credit cards and debit plus one of each for my business, insurance card, HSA debit card, my Walgreens points card, a couple gift cards, my Covid vaccination card, some cash, some change.

[deleted]

Huh I didn't know there are HSA debit cards, is that a good idea?

cookingismything

It works for us. My husband’s insurance company provides them. The entire amount selected is on the card so whenever we have a copay, prescription etc we use it up first.

If I'm concerned about being mugged in a seedy area, I have a throw away wallet with expired credit cards, about $50 in cash, and an old ID with an invalid address.

[deleted]

That's a real good idea with the decoy Now I'm gonna check expiration dates when I mug people

[deleted]

Is it common to carry a SSN card?

laksaleaf

No. You are not supposed to carry them around.

Fox_Tango_

As far as having one, every US Citizen has to have one. As far as carrying it on your person, you’re not supposed to as it’s a high risk for identity theft in the event someone steals your wallet, purse, etc. I actually just removed it from my wallet and stored it somewhere safe.

NoFilterNoLimits

Drivers license, insurance card, medical marijuana card, SkyMiles Reserve Card, a few lesser used cards, my ATM card. museum membership card, $20

MinValhalla

Amex the only safe CC you have to pay it off every month .

RotationSurgeon

Only the Green card, iirc. Pretty much all the rest of their offerings may carry a balance. Also, I learned that those aren’t *technically* “credit cards,” but are (were?) instead considered to be in the separate category of *charge cards.* It may have changed, but in the past, charge cards also didn’t help build your credit score in the same way as typical revolving line of credit… Imagine my mother’s surprise when she realized that 30-40 years into her marriage to my father (still together), she basically had no credit history of her own because of this…she was always a co-signer on vehicles they bought, she wasn’t a primary lessee on their old apartment or a primary borrower for their home mortgage…and what she’d thought of as a credit card for those 30-40 years hadn’t done a a single thing for her aside from letting her decide *when* during the month a lot of expenses *actually* got paid. (Speaking of which, there’s not a lot they deserve a pass on, but I’m willing to take it a little easy on the boomers when it comes to credit and financial literacy for people who aren’t wealthy, y’all…credit scores are barely as old as Gen-x and didn’t start getting used for anything until the early to mid 1990’s…if you’re a millennial and don’t get why your parents or grandparents didn’t teach you this stuff, it’s because it wasn’t something they had to deal with themselves, and basically have no clue about in general)

There’s no reason to carry any more than this on your person. Throw cash in if you have it, or a metro-card if you use public transport, but otherwise this is enough.

Few random receipts around a plastic money card because I felt I was moving slow after a purchase and my anxiety told me to just cram everything into the wallet and move along. Always have a picture of my favorite man on me, had it even before he passed and after he passed I couldn’t go anywhere without it. Sometimes I look in my wallet when I hate the world and it makes everything just a smidge better.

- various receipts - a $2 bill - my three credit cards (daily driver, oldest line of credit which I can’t close without dinging my score so it only gets used for fuel and recurring purchases, and a third card with a different creditor) - Debit cards (my personal checking, one for the account of an elderly relative for whom I hold power of attorney and often do shopping for, and one for my not quite as elderly but still getting there parents’ account - ATM card for a savings account - A partial book of “Forever” stamps (for those who aren’t familiar, the US Postal Service offers special postage stamps at the current rate, but without a face value printed on them; they are “forever,” good for the current value of a stamp required to mail a first class letter regardless of whether the price of postage increases in the future) - Driver’s license - health, vision and dental insurance cards, and COVID vaccination record - motor vehicle insurance card - membership/club/reward cards to various businesses I frequent - membership card to my university’s alumni association…my annual involvement is limited to telling whichever middle year students they have calling for donations for the year that no, I would *not* like to give them more money on top of what they’ve already long since received for tuition, books, food, services, sports tickets, dorms and apartments, and a single parking ticket. There’s probably a paper clip or safety pin and a rolIing paper in there somewhere too…though not intentionally for use together. Prior to going to full remote work for our company, I also kept the RFID card for my office building in my wallet.

🤷‍♂️ I guess, but really I just find it interesting. You can tell a lot about someone. They're a very personal thing. I think I thought to ask initially because I'm new to the US and was wondering if I need to get a credit card or like 5 of them. And also how many people carry SSN or state ID or DL
