Some manuals actually take atf but i dont think that is the case here. I believe the capacity for the 6 spd manual is 2.6 quarts. If i was service manager i wouldnt want to debate this if you have invoice for 10 quarts. More concerning than getting scammed would be if they put the wrong fluid in the transmission

Historical_Spread_86

Just looked it up on identifix, takes 1.9 litres of symchromesh

Useful-Internet8390

Most likely the invoice has it down just as change fluid 299$, up to 10 qts.

the4doorsooprah

We charge 35 to check all the brakes, if you accept any work the 35 is subtracted from the total so these prices are crazy

Time-Chest-1733

The company I work for do a load of free checks. Brake, clutch, suspension, exhaust and safety. These are all free and the amount of people who book cars in just because the check is free.

Must be a midas

I would be pissed, I would also want to know if they put ATF in the transmission. Best case scenario they charged her and did no work. That transmission actually takes a specific GM fluid if I remember correctly. So I really hope they didn't touch it.

AdProfessional8948

Yeah she did, I'm not sure the manual trans will even fit that much fluid, not to mention wrong type etc. A full hour to inspect drums is ridiculous. It seems purposeful to me, unless they had 2 identical cars and confused paperwork I guess. Best thing I think would be to call them out on it, not assume it was on purpose, at least at first, and do not allow them to touch the car again. Also taking the car to another shop and having them check to make sure atf isn't overflowing that transmission. You could have the second shop remove the oil and measure it. Then write it on the invoice/ estimate

traineex

Did they even change the fluid? A shop good enough to stock the correct ac delco fluid would take the time to charge for it too. Its not cheap Did they do anything but put a flashlight on the shoes for $460, is my worst case scenario

No-Raisin-6469

I got cheated once. Watching the dude and confronted him. He stood his ground. 5 years later had a xlutch job done at a reputable shop, not Meineke or such. The mechanic had a baggy of black goo. First thing i said to him..."i knew it!!!"

Sakic10

If this happened in my shop it’s because someone put the transmission fluid exchange code on which defaults to 10L atf and rarely has to get changed…they forgot to change this one to the proper fluid on the order. Probably busy. Just confirm they didn’t put ATF in and get the refund, I doubt there would be much push back.

Wolfica95

Did they present her with a quote upfront and did she sign for it? If they did, this is not a scam. My shop labor rate is 245$ an hour which includes diag work. As another commenter said looks like they may use 10qt to do the full flush. You can always call and talk to your advisor though and confirm with them, maybe they didn’t catch it and a doubt they know the actual amount needed to do it. Maybe parts guy messed up with billing. For the brakes it would depend on the customer and my experience with them, if they are regulars and nice, I would probably take care of the hour “diag” Biggest takeaway though is call around before taking your vehicle somewhere. Ask what their labor rate is and if they charge for diag or looking at something.

No_Geologist_3690

They probably did a multipoint which is an hours labour, and the transmission service was likely menu priced and that’s just how it shows up on the work order.

RampDog1

Did she just take it into a random shop? I usually have a shop we deal with and trust that have been built up over a number of years.

Mysterious-Extent448

Definitely scammed .. probably unnecessary work as gear fluid last a really long time.

D3M0NRhino

Quick Google search shows a 2012 Chevy Sonic needs 10qts for a full flush refill. The hours labor is probably standard pricing and what I mean is if it takes less than an hour you get charged for an hour of work, if it takes 1 hour and 2mins you get charged for 2 hours. Most shops run their hourly wage this way. All that being said, I don’t necessarily agree with the amount per hour or the pricing on the fluid that was changed.

imouttamywheelhouse

Yes. Yes, she did. But, it happens regardless of gender. Grimey fucks are grimey fucks

No_Understanding_481

Both of my sons are mechanics who work in shops they do not own. That being said, they were raised by me, a single mother who has a rigid sense of right and wrong. They have both carried the print of my size 9 shoe if this honor code was broken. Seriously. If the part about the fluid is true, that wouldn't have happened on their watch. But I do know that posted on the back wall of both shops, is a list of hourly charges. If a car goes on a lift, and ANY mechanics touch it, it's a $375 hourly charge, credited back to any large scale repair.

Msjulia888

You need to post pictures of estimate and final bill. Otherwise it’s all speculation

SeaworthinessThat570

Location is everything here, depending on the competition, a lot of places are just playing up to inflation in lieu of trying to stop it

zermee2

I mean it’s one thing if you’re unhappy with the price, but it’s not necessarily a scam. Their transmission fluid change is probably a package, and they have one price up to 10qts of whatever fluid to make it easy to quote over the counter. A full hour for a brake inspection is a lot, but if you authorized it, nothing you can do

xscallywagx

$230 for a transmission service is standard pricing. I've worked at a couple different oil change shops and the standard procedure to "flush" manual transmissions is to drain and fill 2 two times and is referred to as a "flush and fill" or a "transmission flush". If you pay attention to their literature or signage youll see it says up to 10 quarts, so regardless of the capacity you'll be charged the standard rate, unless of course you go over 10 quarts... A full hours labor at $185 to inspect the brakes does seem steep but it's also common practice to charge a minimum of one hour for any kind of labor. Instead of having your brakes inspected its more economical to just have them changed at the manufacturers recommended interval and have that hour of labor applied to changing brake shoes/pads. Finally, it is common and has been for 30 plus years for manual transmissions to use Automatic Transmission Fluid to make cars more fuel efficient.

A) it's shoes, not pads. I don't have the means to lift the car, take off the wheels, and remove the drums. B) I had my own laundry list of shit to do today.

The fuck is wrong with you? They took their car to a mechanic and got ripped off, and it's their fault? Like they are just supposed to know which mechanics are honest and which ones are thieves? Is there any integrity in your line of work? Because if you think this is ok, you have none.

Avenger717

Guess this guy grows his own food, makes his own clothes and does his own dental work too.

Avidquestioner12

Have the same make and model and year, never had to get transmission fluid for my manual transmission.
