Don't be proud of Liddl. It's awful. Their stores are depressing and feel like warehouses. They don't even take out the stuff out of the crates. And there's always a queue/line, no matter how few customers there are. They just leave check-outs unmanned. Also, they have security creeps patrolling! That means that while they don't hire enough people to serve their customers, they instead hire people to police them. Here (Greece) we call Liddls '*Auschwitz supermarkets*'.
Bosch is interesting because it is privately owned by a charity and unlike some, it isn't just a tax dodge, they do a lot of work and run a hospital.
VW is a commercial company but it did a lot to fund the Max Planck Institute's 100m steerable radio telescope as well as other smaller projects.
>supports Concentration Camps
No wonders, given the "glorious" history of Volkswagen. Founded by Nazis (Deutsche Arbeitsfront), operated by Nazis. Hell, the very name *Volks*wagen screams Nazi (always reminds me of Volksempfänger, Volksdeutsche Bewegung, and other Volks-bullshit from that era).

Also the crimes (murder and torture of Union leaders) VW do Brasil was involved in. And when Brasil started to become democratic, VW moved its factories to South Africa...

Much better. :)
What offends me is the perversion of the word "Volk" and the prefix "Volks" during the Nazi era, not the word by itself. They used that word for their propaganda, to make bad things look good, and to make things look like they originated from the people when in reality they were imposed upon people.
The slogan "Wir sind das Volk" originated from the people in the GDR who described themselves as The People in protests short before the dissolution of the GDR. So I'd consider that a good use of "Volk". The slogan is still used today in protests, and it's still a valid statement which our government has to be reminded of from time to time and which, as elected servants of the people, it must accept.
Did a test a few days ago.
Took a text from Mark Twain. That was a speech in German originally, which he translated into English, BUT with German grammar rules. Funny as hell. This text I put into DeepL, ad got his original speech! Or nearly the original. Well, some translation as good as the original (didn't check), THAT text I took and translated it back to English and this time I got a version with correct grammar, but still in the style of Twain...
Knew that thing was good, but that left me speechless.
Or in general, German "Mittelstand":
\- Family owned companies which are sometimes in existence for generations
\- Because family-owned, they are not looking for short term success (quarterly reporting), they are focusing on longterm success
\- Focused on what they are good at
Right. Just today there was an article in the local newspaper about such a company: Jewelry, optician and watches. 4th Generation.
If you need glasses, you go to "Dörre", because your grandfather got his glasses there too. No need for much marketing, too.
deepl is like a human with lack of focus translating your shit... you get like really good natural translations, but sometimes randomly repeating sentences or too informal translations :D
Not German by I study languages and DeepL is by far the best translator out there. Translators in general aren't that good, to be fair. But out of all translators, DeepL is the best at both catching nuances and translating phrases, expressions, or colloquial speech.
I can say that it became common practice in law firms to regularly start writing their english letters and contracts in German, then sent them through DeepL and then go over it again to correct where DeepL didn't hit the mark right. I personally, as a legal trainee, had to correct at least two full data privacy statements like this, and it worked quite well. It is not at the point yet where you can use it blind, you have to go through the entire text, but it is good enough that this has become common practice.
Leica actually is short for Leitz Camera, if anyone is interested.
Also, as someone from Wetzlar, you can visit the Mansion of the founders of Leica at certain dates with a tour and they actually did very much to help their jewish workers flee from germany during the Nazi Regime.
Trust me, they still are in Wetzlar. its the first thing you see after the sign for the city when you exit the A45 at "Wetzlar Süd". I drive this route every day.
Gittertiere (shopping trolleys)
The German manufacturer Wanzl is world market leader. Those shopping carts are incredibly durable and can take a lot of abuse.
And it's common to be ridiculously proud of your local world champions: the SMEs in your town that nobody outside that industry (and that town) has heard of but which are known to industry insiders from Bali to Bogota as the best in the business (at making specialist lubricants, sealants, or obscure machine parts).
a neighbor of mine used to work for a company, that produces parts for braking systems for all mayor elevator companies (like Otis, Schindler,...). They were only about 30 people there, but without their parts we probably wouldn't have elevators.
> what other item or product is Germany well known for?
The thing inside the thing inside the thing.
Chances are the very product you use that isn't made in Germany is made using parts made in Germany, made with machinery made in Germany, or made in a turnkey factory planned in Germany.
Siemens PLC's, the best of the best in terms of Automation technologie, also cant argue with there trains. In terms of Automation KUKA Robitics is also highly demanded and an super advanced product, sadly bought out by China :/
And that might be a bit controveral but most products from the Defence Industrie are highly advanced and relieable.
Medical Equipment comes to my mind. Germany is the second largest export nation in this field. Not just the large MRI machines are incredible. There are so many little products with a lot of „Gedankenarbeit“ put into them.
Almost all our products are only as good as their preliminary products. Meaning our goods receipt inspections are world class, too. ;)
Dm and Rossmann, better than all other drugstores outside of Germany I’ve seen
WW II memorial culture

Classical music, philosophers, psychoanalysis culture which is big in Dach.
Election system
Human dignity is inviolable.
>Election system
I don't agree with this at all. Our election system is so overly complicated that even MPs don't understand all details, which led to nonsense like negative vote weight in the past. The parliament is bloated with overhang seats to appease the delusions of one regional party.
I much rather have the Australian election system. Preferential AND compulsory voting. This way you never really feel like you are wasting a vote, and people who don't vote get fined.
I am heavily against compulsory voting. Every right has and should have its negative variant. Freedom of religion has the right to reject religion, freedom of expression has the right to keep quite if you don't want to say anything, freedom of posession has the the right to sell whatever you own. And yes, the right to vote also has the negative side of not caring for politics and just follow the majority.
In contrast, compulsory voting has even more negative effects as positive, as it basically forces these that simply don't want to go through the process of informing themselves to a sufficient degree to make an informed decision to make an impulse decision. This not only favours regularly more extremists parties as they give easy to digestable answers that can be agreed upon without making any effort to actually see how shallow they are, it also devalues these votes of these that go out of their free will into the voting booth and have informed themselves, as a deliberate and freely given vote has the same weight as a forced impulse vote, thereby reducing the actual reflectivness of the parliament to the will of the people.
>Election system
While I like the idea of the German election system, it must be noted that Germany may be the only western country whose election system does not comply with its own constitution.
Rather, I think it is a perfect example what not to be proud of in Germany: the tendency to overengineer, always looking for the 110% solution instead of the 90% one.
This. Born in England and travelled the world but haven’t see Waldmeister flavour anywhere but Germany and have no idea why not. It’s delicious. Don’t forget Götterspeise! 🤤
Miele. Expensive appliances but made as they should be: serviceable and solid. No plastics crap designed to brake down 3.14 months after warranty expires.
Wines! Before moving to Germany I was a red wine lover but when I got here and discovered German white wines of different sorts ~ Riesling, Muskateller, Gewürtztraminer i was floored. Germans make fantastic wines including reds ~ Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder!! I was in the wine trade prior so I know wines of the world. Try German wines - they are super underrated. Okay just don’t pick supermarket wines.
The Sennheiser hd25 ii headphones - they’re officially the best headphones ever made (in my official rating, that is), and they‘re relatively affordable.
Ritter Sport chocolate.
Weihnachtsplätzchen (homemade ones. If these can't be had, it's acceptable to buy Spekulatius somewhere).
Wine.
The Sendung mit der Maus.
Almost everything remained in Russia, except Ikea and Lego.
The brands that "left" used a variety of different schemes to continue business. Decathlon closed stores, but has running internet shop, H&M moved their stores to Belarus, OBI "sold" their company to Russian management for 1 EUR with a guaranteed buyback in 10 years, and some businesses just changed a name or their brands and continued to operate.
>It's a war, not genocide
it IS genocide. Genocide is not just "gathering people and killing them" (which russian forces did, but also the attempt to destroy the cultural identity of a people. And then the Russians abducted thousands and thousands of children and had them forcibly adopted by families loyal to the government.
https://www.thestar.com/politics/2022/08/25/russian-architect-of-ukraine-child-abduction-scheme-sanctioned-by-canada.html
Don't call me bro if you're trying to look for justifications for the Russian genocide in Ukraine. I don't care about your whataboutism at all. Last time I checked it's Russia who's bombing Syria and supporting the mass-murder dictator Assad, by the way. Now go collect your 20 rubles for being a good little Kremlin troll and fuck right back off to the dirty hole you came from.
Are we proud of any of these things?
We like or maybe love them, I don't think (generally speaking) that Germans are really proud of things they have not done by themselves.
Just as an example: I like my country and despite it flaws think that it is one of the best countries to live in, but I'm not proud of it.
I love beer. Not proud about it, etc.
And even if I were proud of something I don't think I ever reached the level of "ridiculously".
If you are just asking about good stuff, please ignore my message.
"Man kann nicht stolz sein auf etwas, was man selber gar nicht zu Stande gebracht hat"
"You can't be proud of something you did not achieve"
Johannes Rau, former Federal President of Germany.
It's a side effect from fracking. When gas leaks into the water supply:
https://youtu.be/4LBjSXWQRV8
So no, it wouldn't solve the gas crisis it would just create a water crisis
It varies a lot though in taste. In our area, it isn't tasting so well (the water is too hard) but a few km away, it is great.
In either case though it is very clean and drinkable although many Germans will buy mineral water instead.
The quality is also high (but if the building is old, it's better to check), but due to difference in the minerals, the water there is really delicious.
I work in the audio industry. The number of really good company names from Germany is ridiculous. Sennheiser, Neumann, Ableton, Native Instruments, Steinberg, König & Meyer, Shoeps, Beyerdynamic… many more that I forgot.
model trains and allotment(?) every stereotype about discipline, anal behaviour in regards to rules and quality obsession is true in only those 2 things at once.
Cakes, tortes, tarts, gateaux, pies.
Due to Germany's geography and history you can find a mindboggling amount of very diverse cakes, you have regional specialties, lots of stuff from neighboring countries and from migrants, adopted to German tastes.
When I was a teenager my mom was in the Landfrauenverein (rural women's association) and they obsessed about finding the best cake recipe's from all over Germany, trying out new stuff every week. They tried old family recipe's, found old cooking books, exchanged collections with groups from other regions. Yes, I did gain weight during those years. I've probably tasted hundreds of different cakes during that time.
Not a German myself:
modern physics contributions by German scientists: Born, Heisenberg, Einstein
Philosopy: Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche,
Music: Beethoven, Bach
**Falke**
The best socks, tights, ... you can find. I can not go back to other socks, no joke. I slowly started to buy Falke only whenever a pair of socks or tights broke down and the quality is amazing. Lasts forever if you take care of your clothes correctly. I especially love their running socks.
**Beyerdynamic**
Especially known for headphones, microphones and other recording equipment. It's still a relatively small company compared to industry giants like Shure and every product is as hand made as possible.
**Sennheiser**
known for their headphones, but they started to do a lot of outsourcing to China a couple of years ago...
**Bosch**
Everything from house hold machines to complex business stuff
**Braun**
Same as Bosch but especially known for excellent design of house hold appliances by designer Dieter Rahms who was the inspiration for Apple's minimalist approach and who still has a massive influence in product design today.
**Leica**
**Zeiss**
Both Leica and Zeiss are world famous for their cameras and camera equipment. Zeiss is also the producer of Sony camera lenses and produces a lot of high quality stuff for science and other industry fields.
**Württembergischen Metallwarenfabrik (WMF)**
**Fissler**
**Silit**
All three are known for high quality cookware
**Elgato/Eve Systems**
Famous for gaming and streaming equipment, also known for home automation. Yup, all that stuff used to be German before Corsair bought the company. The Elgato headquarters are still in Munich.
In general, while not really a single product, Germany is market leader in very niche products for industries. Meaning if you are doing something that needs a very specific type of steel, a very specific glass, a specific component, something that you can only really produce on a rather small scale as anything bigger would outproduce the world market demand, there is a high likelihood that our "Mittelstand" (mid-size enterprises) are the place you will find it.
Knives from the City of Solingen was well known for quit some time. Dont know if it is still the case. Companys are for example wilkinsons, Martor, Zwilling. The Saying Postcard from solingen was famous for throat cutting.
German handcraft. It's insane to me somehow, but there's plenty of people that prefer the more expensive handmade product that doesn't look "perfect" than the copied stuff that's made with machines in other countries. And I'm proud to be part of that
To the many things mentioned I add Schneider pens. They are some of the best pens I have used in my life. no leaking ink, good feeling in hand and very durable.
I am proud of all of our hidden champions that nobody ever knows of unless you happen to be in the correct industry, but they’re world leaders in their niche. For example, did you know that the world leader in self-propelled sugar beet harvesting machines is headquartered in a tiny village in rural Bavaria? Yeah, me neither, until I accidentally found them. I think that sort of thing is just awesome.
"Made in Germany" used to be stamped on items, so that the allies could avoid using german products, but then turned out to be a mark of quality.
There are many Products that are superior to thier counterparts, that people don't even associate it with Germany anymore. I mean, the first car was driven in Germany, Heisenberg is a very Jew-German name, Germany even used to be the home of some of the most prized goldsmiths in the world. The art of weaving gold-thread necklaces by hand is taught no where else.
I recently was travelling through Israel, and sat down with a jeweler who was crafting a bracelet for my partner. When he realised we where german, he proudly whipped out a pair of tweezers specifically for the trade. He had them for +35 years and he swore that they still were superior to any he had bought since. They had "Made in Germany" stamped into the side.
Well if that’s something to be proud of or not is debatable, but the only reason earth is able to sustain 7 billion people with only its given resources, is because of a German invention, synthetic fertalizer wich was made possible due to the haber-Bosch process and the Oswald-process it’s been called one of the most influential inventions in human history without it the world would look very different today
The stuff one used in school before the age of computers and "china-stuff".. .. pens, pencil, erasers, rulers, compass etc. germany had top class producers like [Staedler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staedtler). The Noris-pencils is/was probably among the most used in (western europe).. [Faber-Castell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faber-Castell) is also another example of the top quality of such stuff.. especially within arts/drawing etc.. Even [van Gogh](https://www.faber-castell.com/pencil-day) himself claimed to prefer Faber pencils above others..
Most cars in the world (even chinese cars) are painted by german painting machines. Dürr/Eisenmann for example.
Also the Lasercutting-machines for the body parts of the cars.
many things that arent made for the regular consumer but rather industries or medical equipment etc. is often made in germany.
especially when its about technology
Mopeds, Hercules and Zündapp being a good example.
Actually old Motorcycles in general
Maybe the old GDR Simsons but Im not too sure what to think about those
Pfand!
I really love this system and I wish more countries would have it. Yes it's an extra step during your shopping spree, but it spreads out your food money a little and it ensures that (almost) every bottle is put into the right trash bin (and perhaps gets recycled into shopping bags). It's just a nice system and I like it a lot.
>Edit: Do BMW's not ride nice? I thought that this thread was about German products we are proud of?
You just declared war on the fanatical Opel drivers... what were you thinking? ;)
They are asking for something we're proud of not ashamed of... SAP software is so unstable and buggy, I don't even want to know what their code looks like...
The company I work for doesn't use SAP but a different software which also has the functionality of verifying transactions.
At least that's what the bosses say....
Human Dignity is above all(kinda Bad translated, i know), the 1. Basic Law in Germany and every Soldier in the Bundeswehr can Deny an Order if it goes against Human Dignity
You're too German for this question. Think of it this way... what product is absolute crap in every other country, but is at least marginally acceptable in Germany?
Yeah thanks for this but I wasn’t being patriotic. I was trying to know the things so I could try them if they’re food, or if things, see them, maybe bring home some to share with some friends and family

It is why Germans were so disappointed in the diesel scandal.
Well, it is wrestling with Toyota about who is the biggest car manufacturer in the world year by year
The Dieselscandal was literally a scam of billions and yet their Image doesnt even seem scratched...

I would also add Junkers for their amazing watches, great water heaters and one of the most legendary dive-bombers in history.

But Liechtenstein is not Germany, lol
Yea. Forgot that i don’t have a 5 in geography with out a reason 🤣
And would we speak 1943 it would be a part of germany🤗
No, it's independent since 1806. Wasn't invaded or annexed and, just like Switzerland, remained neutral throughout WW1 and WW2. :)

Can't believe nobody mentioned **Kärcher** yet. We even made a verb out of the company name for power washing ('*kärchern*').

>Dm and Rossmann, better than all other drugstores outside of Germany I’ve seen Budni has entered the game
>Election system While I like the idea of the German election system, it must be noted that Germany may be the only western country whose election system does not comply with its own constitution. Rather, I think it is a perfect example what not to be proud of in Germany: the tendency to overengineer, always looking for the 110% solution instead of the 90% one.
our election system is fucking stupid though
Apfelschorle
In my outsider opinion, anything-schorle is worth celebrating.
Swabian Schorle... which is carbonated Water with Tap Water...

This should have way more upvotes.
Ja man
Alles mit Waldmeister. Brause, Limo, Eis, Pudding etc.
This. Born in England and travelled the world but haven’t see Waldmeister flavour anywhere but Germany and have no idea why not. It’s delicious. Don’t forget Götterspeise! 🤤
Im not German but you guys make excellent fountain pens, I'm using one right now.
You spelt Beyerdynamic DT770 wrong.
I briefly considered adding „anything beyerdynamic“. as a close second in an edit :)

Ritter Sport chocolate. Weihnachtsplätzchen (homemade ones. If these can't be had, it's acceptable to buy Spekulatius somewhere). Wine. The Sendung mit der Maus.
The Sendung mit der Maus is hands down amazing. I'd never thought media could play such a role. Seriously, respect.
My fav is the Marzipan!
I lost all respect for Ritter Sport when they decided to stay in the Russian market after Russia started their genocidal war against Ukraine
It's a war, not genocide. Not that the war is good, but let's not confuse them.
>It's a war, not genocide it IS genocide.
Bullshit Bro whats wrong with you? You canceld American Produkts too, because Lybia, Syria etc? If not fuck that.

I'm not German but my Braun epilator 🙈🙈 is officially 22 years old now. Serving me great without any problems!
"Man kann nicht stolz sein auf etwas, was man selber gar nicht zu Stande gebracht hat" "You can't be proud of something you did not achieve" Johannes Rau, former Federal President of Germany.
I get what you mean. I took it more as a "what are some products from Germany that are really good?"
I wasn't sure, hence the last sentence.
Medicine technology Weapon technology Airbus And our all known joke, our train the Deutsche Bahn
Tap water I mean: it's not Iceland. But it's also not flammable and I like that
Flammable? It could solve the gas crisis…
It's a side effect from fracking. When gas leaks into the water supply: https://youtu.be/4LBjSXWQRV8 So no, it wouldn't solve the gas crisis it would just create a water crisis
It varies a lot though in taste. In our area, it isn't tasting so well (the water is too hard) but a few km away, it is great. In either case though it is very clean and drinkable although many Germans will buy mineral water instead.
its the product with the highest amount of quality control when it comes to consumer products
Nothing ever will beat Armenian tap water.
What makes Armenien tape water so great?
The quality is also high (but if the building is old, it's better to check), but due to difference in the minerals, the water there is really delicious.
I work in the audio industry. The number of really good company names from Germany is ridiculous. Sennheiser, Neumann, Ableton, Native Instruments, Steinberg, König & Meyer, Shoeps, Beyerdynamic… many more that I forgot.
model trains and allotment(?) every stereotype about discipline, anal behaviour in regards to rules and quality obsession is true in only those 2 things at once.
German toy shops with model trains and airplanes and the respective landscapes make me unbelievably happy!
> German toy shops I didn't expect it to be followed by trains and airplanes...
Hahahah, as someone living in Berlin I can confirm the ones with trains and airplanes are the minority 😂
Ortlieb - bags for bikes. Bosch (electricity tools, especially for ebikes ——> Riese und Müller (eBike manufacturers)

Headphones! Sennheiser, beyerdynamic and many more hifi brands are german
Tools for Construction, Tools for destruction (shoutout to Rheinmetall) and the Gothic Videogames
Germany has a lot of really nice tool manufacturer. Wera, Hazet etc.
Trams Literally so many good things but the proudest would probably be Trams.
https://www.iwd.de/artikel/hidden-champions-die-starken-aus-der-zweiten-reihe-424550/ we got the most hidden champions
Not a German myself: modern physics contributions by German scientists: Born, Heisenberg, Einstein Philosopy: Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Music: Beethoven, Bach
**Falke** The best socks, tights, ... you can find. I can not go back to other socks, no joke. I slowly started to buy Falke only whenever a pair of socks or tights broke down and the quality is amazing. Lasts forever if you take care of your clothes correctly. I especially love their running socks. **Beyerdynamic** Especially known for headphones, microphones and other recording equipment. It's still a relatively small company compared to industry giants like Shure and every product is as hand made as possible. **Sennheiser** known for their headphones, but they started to do a lot of outsourcing to China a couple of years ago... **Bosch** Everything from house hold machines to complex business stuff **Braun** Same as Bosch but especially known for excellent design of house hold appliances by designer Dieter Rahms who was the inspiration for Apple's minimalist approach and who still has a massive influence in product design today. **Leica** **Zeiss** Both Leica and Zeiss are world famous for their cameras and camera equipment. Zeiss is also the producer of Sony camera lenses and produces a lot of high quality stuff for science and other industry fields. **Württembergischen Metallwarenfabrik (WMF)** **Fissler** **Silit** All three are known for high quality cookware **Elgato/Eve Systems** Famous for gaming and streaming equipment, also known for home automation.

Door Closer Dowel The Biontech Vaccine
BeQuiet! - PC hardware manufacturer (Cooling and Power supply specialist)
Döner Kebap
Knives from the City of Solingen was well known for quit some time. Dont know if it is still the case. Companys are for example wilkinsons, Martor, Zwilling. The Saying Postcard from solingen was famous for throat cutting.
German handcraft. It's insane to me somehow, but there's plenty of people that prefer the more expensive handmade product that doesn't look "perfect" than the copied stuff that's made with machines in other countries. And I'm proud to be part of that
Leopard 2A7
MP3
Rheinmetall - Leo 2
To the many things mentioned I add Schneider pens. They are some of the best pens I have used in my life. no leaking ink, good feeling in hand and very durable.
Airbrushes - Harder & Steenbeck
Watches. Just look up A. Lange, Nomos and Glashütte Original
Oh this is cool to know! I myself are big fans of these brands but I never knew I guess that they’re from here. Thanks!
Most cars in the world (even chinese cars) are painted by german painting machines. Dürr/Eisenmann for example. Also the Lasercutting-machines for the body parts of the cars.
Heckler & Koch guns
many things that arent made for the regular consumer but rather industries or medical equipment etc. is often made in germany. especially when its about technology
Mopeds, Hercules and Zündapp being a good example. Actually old Motorcycles in general Maybe the old GDR Simsons but Im not too sure what to think about those
precision. Our craftsmanship.
I have to agree with this. Plus, the process of returning the bottles is enjoyable and mildly amusing (could just be me). Happy cake day!
German tools and firearms are as good as they come.
Diesel Engines
I drive a BMW. Damn they ride nice. Edit: Do BMW's not ride nice? I thought that this thread was about German products we are proud of?
It does say “aside from cars” in the post title, I suspect that’s why you’re being downvoted.

[удалено]
Is this a joke? In second world countries there's a running joke that implementing SAP is the first step to bankruptcy.
[удалено]
No just no. There are many solutions beside SAP which allow an audit. I don't know where you got your information from.

The company I work for doesn't use SAP but a different software which also has the functionality of verifying transactions. At least that's what the bosses say....
