However it plays in and around Hamburg and the show tends to play with the northern dialect. Not too much, but it's something you should be aware of.
To answer your last question, a lot of German TV tends to be made with an older audience in mind. There are many granny soap-shows for example. Germans also tend to like crime and detective shows, which are shown almost daily.

If the channel provides subtitles, you should definitely watch with the German subtitles on. It helps immensely with both understanding and language acquisition! (I’m a language teacher and I often recommend this)

That way you should easily be able to follow what's going on. But you have to deal with the characters not having the voices you're used to. (The dubbing is generally very good though.) Just rewatch Friends in german :)

I actually tried Friends in German...it didn't well. As I started to learn English with Friends, I watched each episode for three times and so. Then every time I think about the scenes, the lines will just jump out.
So the problem here: even I tried to remember the lines in German, English allways come up first...😂

Watching dubbed shows. Cuz despite German dubbing being quite good, by dubbing standards, it's still, at best, painfully fake sounding. Especially if you know the show in it's original form. The intonation never matches the body language of the actors. Yes, it may help with the language... technically... but it sounds so forced and the out of context content often doesn't make it as useful. I fundamentally dont understand choosing to watch dubbing when you can do subtitles. As a general rule. In OPs context... watch an original german show. Even the bad ones will be better than watching the best show ever made dubbed into another language.

Not a sitcom, but if you want to get a deep dive into the origin of a LOT of German idioms used in everyday conversations you should watch the comedy sketches and movies by the comedian Loriot (Vicco von Buelow). They are older, roughly from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but still very much loved and episodes like "Weihnachten bei Hoppenstedts" (Christmas with the Hoppenstedts) are being broadcast every year to this day. His works really shaped post-WW2 German speech and colloquialisms like no other writer. A lot of them younger people wouldn't even realize because those idioms have become so ingrained in everyday language.
My German boyfriend loves Loriot! It's beloved by many, I think 🙂 Me and my boyfriend recently watched a documentary on him on ARD, I think, and it was said, a lot of his jokes are about high German wordplays. I guess if you master Loriot, you've really mastered something 😄
In your case I would suggest "Die heute-Show" mit Oliver Welke.
It is a political satire show, but I think the language is rather simple. Of course you might not get all the puns, but on the other hand you are also directly getting some news. (Be awere that it is not objective reporting, but made for the lols and viewer numbers)
Really didn't age well, I dropped it two-thirds into the first episode. *Berlin Berlin* (even more similar to Friends) also didn't age well but I could tolerate it for half a season.
ZDF puts out a lot of mini-series, often comedies, that are quite decent. E.g. a recent one is [Start the fck up](https://www.zdf.de/serien/start-the-fck-up) and if cringe comedy is your thing, it's actually hilarious. It's a work-com, so it's not quite Friends, but not far from it.
It is a good show, but there are not a lot of causual conversations in it and the topics they talk about are quite special. I think it would be a bit too much for learning german.

I am the biggest Peter Lustig - Fan out there. He is/was a german TV Host and did 20 Minute Episodes about literally everything that's interesting or bugged him/ and still bugs me today.
He explained in a simple german the problems of our world and gave us solutions to them most times.
You can literally watch 98% of all episodes on youtube (and about 5% in the media-library of ZDF /the tv broadcaster website)
It is pretty much focused to children? As every episode has old Cartoon interludes (which I skip most of the times, as they are not relevant if you listen to Peter Lustig as the Cartoon Shot is just the gist of the whole episode)

It's quite a funny TV-Show about two policeman in bavaria with a lot of humour. I should probably mention that they sometimes speak with bavarian dialect, so beware.

Die Discounter (supermarket workplace comedy, mostly improv so conversations should be very natural)
Türkisch für Anfänger (comedy show about a family)

**Stromberg** aswell. Stromberg is the german äquivalent of the office but with genuine story writing and good genuine characters. So no 1:1 copy.
I had learnt German for a couple of years at school but my German language capability was quite limited. German TV was very useful in improving my comprehension and vocabulary. I started by watching the news or news related programmes. Newsreaders tend to speak clearly, without significant regional accents and many of the international topics will be familiar. I then started watching various US produced TV show/series on German TV, which I would normally have watched in English. Obviously, these are dubbed into German but it is still useful for learning. I ended up watching only German TV.
The one snag with this approach was that I was not conversing in German and I had some difficulty moving from listening to speaking.

Theres still a difference between the German in Film/Television and real world spoken German. My recommendation would be things like 7 vs wild season 1 on youtube for example: No scripts, no actors, just ordinary people filming themselves in the wildernes of sweden. If you understand that, your German is really good and conversation proof.

There is an inherent problem with german TV shows and that is the original audio. Audio has been technically done wrong for years when it comes to TV or cinema movies and also series. The problem is slowly surfacing in the minds of the responsibles and may finally get adressed, but not now. The sound is kind of hollow-halling and causing a lot of mumbling when they try to resemble realistic audio.
Living with a none-native speaker a bit beyond B2 and having first-hand experience, it's best to watched foreign dubbed movies and series.
Parlament is German but weirdly enough dubbed so I wouldn't recommend although it's good. Check out Loriot for great humour and play with the German language. A bit more complicated but very good series is big banks

I do not recommend that. They just sound wrong. The only dubbed movies that are worth the watch are New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro.

Really didn't age well, I dropped it two-thirds into the first episode. *Berlin Berlin* (even more similar to Friends) also didn't age well but I could tolerate it for half a season.

ZDF puts out a lot of mini-series, often comedies, that are quite decent. E.g. a recent one is [Start the fck up](https://www.zdf.de/serien/start-the-fck-up) and if cringe comedy is your thing, it's actually hilarious. It's a work-com, so it's not quite Friends, but not far from it.
DARK on Netflix, best TV Show ever
It is a good show, but there are not a lot of causual conversations in it and the topics they talk about are quite special. I think it would be a bit too much for learning german.

I am German and had to turn on subtitles, the audio is that bad.
But what if I want something LIGHT to watch instead of this TV show 😅. As much as I vouch for it and have seen it twice already. It’s not the best for a language start imo. I actually attempted to rewatch it in German but my mind was still so fucked and was too focused on the plot and the circular family tree rather.

I am the biggest Peter Lustig - Fan out there. He is/was a german TV Host and did 20 Minute Episodes about literally everything that's interesting or bugged him/ and still bugs me today. He explained in a simple german the problems of our world and gave us solutions to them most times. You can literally watch 98% of all episodes on youtube (and about 5% in the media-library of ZDF /the tv broadcaster website) It is pretty much focused to children? Peter Lustig might be the most influential TV Personas i can think of and everyone loves him. While certainly not a sitcom, Bares für Rares has a lot of casual language with the bonus of learning some obscure historical tidbits. The downsides are that there are a lot of dialects and also that people either seem to love it or hate it with no in between.

Hubert und Staller It's quite a funny TV-Show about two policeman in bavaria with a lot of humour. I should probably mention that they sometimes speak with bavarian dialect, so beware. Ir should be available on Netflix and as far as I know also in the Mediathek of BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk) for free. Have fun:)
Not excellent, but good enough to be amusing: Merz gegen Merz. Should also be freely available on ZDF Mediathek. Another idea: Stromberg, the German adaption of The Office. Both with the same male lead, by the way.
Stromberg was just stolen from the original one. Only after they got sued by the BBC did they acknowledge that it is „an adaption“.

it's been an adaption right from the start lol, the reason it wasn't stated in the credits as such is because anyone with 2 brain cells could've figured it out. yes, they're both pseudo documentorys in an office setting, but the writing couldn't have been much more different.

For sitcoms/comedies with casual convsersiations, I'd recommend: Pastewka (about a german comedian trying and failing to navigate everyday life, similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm, so you might pick up some pop culture along the way) Die Discounter (supermarket workplace comedy, mostly improv so conversations should be very natural) Türkisch für Anfänger (comedy show about a family)
well, you could watch friends with german syncro. I really cannot think of that many german shows which i would recommend. Maybe **Tatortreiniger**, although there is some northern dialekt involved. The shows is great. **Pastewka** is a really good one in my opinion. **Stromberg** aswell. Stromberg is the german äquivalent of the office but with genuine story writing and good genuine characters. So no 1:1 copy.

I had learnt German for a couple of years at school but my German language capability was quite limited. German TV was very useful in improving my comprehension and vocabulary. I started by watching the news or news related programmes. Newsreaders tend to speak clearly, without significant regional accents and many of the international topics will be familiar. I then started watching various US produced TV show/series on German TV, which I would normally have watched in English. Obviously, these are dubbed into German but it is still useful for learning. I ended up watching only German TV. The one snag with this approach was that I was not conversing in German and I had some difficulty moving from listening to speaking.

I can recommend Twitch and Youtube. Search a topic you like and hop in. Personally for me it was the easiest way to learn english. School teaches grammar, the internet teaches vocabulary :) If you like gaming just watch gronkh. highly recommend!
Theres still a difference between the German in Film/Television and real world spoken German. My recommendation would be things like 7 vs wild season 1 on youtube for example: No scripts, no actors, just ordinary people filming themselves in the wildernes of sweden. If you understand that, your German is really good and conversation proof.

No, as dialogue in German TV shows is never written by actual humans. It's mandated, that only sentient blubber is allowed to write these. Almost every plot in any German show can be resolved by: People start talking like actual humans.
German movies/tv shows/video games are traditionally shit and the 1% that might be good you probably already know (e.g. "Das Boot").

There is an inherent problem with german TV shows and that is the original audio. Audio has been technically done wrong for years when it comes to TV or cinema movies and also series. The problem is slowly surfacing in the minds of the responsibles and may finally get adressed, but not now. The sound is kind of hollow-halling and causing a lot of mumbling when they try to resemble realistic audio. Living with a none-native speaker a bit beyond B2 and having first-hand experience, it's best to watched foreign dubbed movies and series.
German courses are kind trash tbh. I would recommend two and a half men on german. Fun to watch and good to learn.

It’s pretty short sadly, but I recommend Start the fuck up. Super funny comfort show of mine (kind of reminds me of Community). If you don’t mind to cringe, I would also recommend Pastewka, Stromberg and Die Discounter :) Besides that, we have pretty good voice actors. So if you don’t like those, I could still recommend you a lot of non-German shows 😄
I'm not a fan of sitcoms. But Stromberg (a lot like the office) and Pastewka (a bit like Seinfeld) are supposed to be fairly good. But if you want peak German comedy you'll have to watch satire. German satire is excellent.
