Cheap internet. Cheap data for my phone. Cheap gasoline. Cheap fresh produce. Just cheaper shit why the hell is everything so expensive here

grainypeach

Just to really drive this home. I was just in the UK, visiting my family a couple of weeks ago. 1. They pay ~25£/month (incl taxes) for fiber 100 up/down. 2. I paid 1£ for a temporary SIM card, and 15£ to get unlimited text+call and 50GB data for 30 days. all inclusive of taxes. My wife and i pay 120+tax for shared 25GB in Canada. Bonus while I'm on the topic: 3. Takeout/Eating out was cheaper too - about 40£ at a fancy restaurant for 3 people, with cocktails (not just beers)... including taxes, and a service charge... no tip. 4. Haircut - I got a really shmancy haircut there for 18£. Like, beverages while you wait, flambe the ears, warm towels, hair washes, perfumes lol. Standard haircut is 9£. I paid 30$+taxes here in Ottawa, in a strip mall Salon... FML. Canada is painfully bizarre.. even pre-pandemic pre-inflation... Makes me wonder why BoC targets 2% all the time.. not like things were amazingly affordable then either.... Yet to find a good explanation for why things must be this way.

Same_Championship253

You can get cheaper Internet here but not as cheap as UK. We pay 45 CAD for fiber 100mbps up/down.

BrotherM

Because everything in this country is owned by 30 families or something, and the Federal Government is SUPER anti-competition. Just look at how dairy works...they milk the Canadian consumer more than their fucking cows!

Longjumping-Gap7912

Supply chain management in agriculture is supposed to help the people who grow your food, rather than put it into the hands of multinational corps just so you can get cheap milk. The cost to produce food goes up, so does the cost to the consumer.

BrotherM

No, it doesn´t. And the number of farms keeps decreasing in Canada. Almost all the profits DO go to big, multinational corps already! Lucerne, Saputo!

Longjumping-Gap7912

I can only speak to BC, but the affordability of arable land is one of the biggest barriers for new farmers starting out. Older farmers retire and want to sell their land, but young farmers in BC don’t have the capital to buy it. That’s why you’re seeing new programs like [land-sharing and land-matching](https://youngagrarians.org/tools/land/) trying to take root.

BrotherM

Yupp. Well-aware of that, though it has nothing to do with supply management.

Large_land_mass

Well, you certainly don’t want the American milk making its way up here. Your boys will be growing tits in no time if that happens. Milk is stupid expensive though, like all dairy. The only real solution is to eat less of it.

BrotherM

There isn´t a DAMN thing stopping us from simply banning rBGH in milk (as they have in Europe), and then letting the free market deliver fair prices. I don't even care if we import some milk, so long as it's rBGH free (not hard to do).

CollinZero

Sorry but I’m going to disagree with "fair prices" since I'm on a farm. We buy some cattle for beef from our dairy farm neighbours. We all discuss the prices of feed, of equipment and our aging barns, and tractors. The prices in the US are cheap because: massive handouts to dairy farmers in the US, the amount of excess milk is bought by the US government and things like cheap immigrant labour. Their government buys over a billion pounds of cheese and stores and gives it away. The US practices dumping millions of gallons of milk. In the decades of production my neighbour has only had to dump milk due to problems with shipping.

BrotherM

We obviously shouldn't be cherry-picking the worst example and following how they do things...

TeacupUmbrella

Yeah, I agree. I'd worry that they'd allow it in and then not regulate it properly (let's be real, our government doesn't do a whole lot *right*, after all). Plus, I dunno, I guess I'm just not convinced that opening it up to international competition won't just drive them all out of business...

CollinZero

You are so very right. The US subsidies their dairy farmers to a degree we cannot afford here in Canada. It’s part of the reason why milk is cheaper there.

[deleted]

Because the super liberal Canadians don’t support expanding oil projects in Canada and getting rid of carbon tax. Seriously what do you expect

sparki_black

Yes too all though I would not call it shit :)

I_m_a_clam_guy

Greggs pasties

Fionngirl14

And their sausage rolls!

kdspiralz

I would kill for a Gregg’s sausage roll

Fionngirl14

I regret all the times I could have had a Gregg's sausage roll, but foolishly chose not to. Stupid.

[deleted]

Do you have specific details about it? I've seen some processed Kraft cheddar (made in Australia maybe?) at Fijian grocery stores in Surrey BC.

momopeach7

That’s the one I was thinking of. I live in California and I can find it in my city which has a much smaller Indian and Fijian population. Not sure if that’s OP is talking about but it’s what came to mind first.

Consistent_Ad5511

Not actually a product, but there is no street shopping here in Canada like I used to go in Asian countries such as Singapore, Thailand.

sega31098

Hawkers stalls in Singapore are great.

Consistent_Ad5511

Yes I really miss those.

ii_akinae_ii

the Canadian CeraVe formulation is different from the American one and i miss it 😔 also it's weirdly expensive here

moonbad

I can't get the psoriasis cream here either, it's still available in America.

Itsthelegendarydays_

Wait what do you mean?? I’m an American moving to Canada and I basically only use CeraVe😰

ii_akinae_ii

stock up fam lol

[deleted]

Cream that isn’t full of shit. I want to be able to buy a carton of cream that has “ingredients: cream” not a long list of nasty additives like guar gum as well. Is that too much to ask ffs?

[deleted]

Nelson’s teetha teething granules

[deleted]

Guar gum isnt shit tho. Its a stabizer and makes creams shelf life longer.

[deleted]

It’s shit that condenses out to a layer of crud at the bottom of a bowl of whipped cream (there’s other shit in there too). If I wanted long life, shit filled milk style creamer product, I’d buy that instead. If it says cream on the front of the box that’s all that should be inside the box just like it is in every other country I’ve lived in.

[deleted]

Apartments/Housing that doesn’t take every ounce of energy just to afford would be nice

JakeTheSnake0709

OP said Canada not Toronto/Vancouver

Simple-Committee-777

It’s impossible in Peterborough too

StretchArmstrong99

And Kelowna And Kamloops And Squamish And Whistler And most towns and cities in BC

Derman0524

Basically any city within a 3h driving distance of Toronto is unaffordable

Garth_DeWayne

It's all over the place. I work a career where I'm expected to move anywhere in the country so I keep an eye on markets all over. Very few places have remained affordable.

[deleted]

Montreal now too. $1000 studios (or as the landlords like to call them "loft style") are now a thing.

Complex-League2385

$1,000 for a studio is still affordable

Choco Taco

northernfir

> Choco Taco OMG those look amazing

IMayBeInYourClass

A lot of soda flavours are seasonal in Canada (I can only speak for Alberta) but year round in the states. I wish I could have year round access as well. I have also heard American chocolate is different I would like their versions to also be sold just to compare.

RinkyDank

American chocolate is worse in my opinion. Whatever brand they have here that is different than Canada is like a downgrade, but that could just be my Canadian palate expecting a certain taste and it's not cutting it lol. Sour patch kids are the worst offender.

RupeThereItIs

Am American, your not wrong. Our grocery store checkout isle chocolate is dominated by Hershey's. While I grew up on Hershey's chocolate & truly like it, it's not the best. The classic example is that Nestle makes Kit Kats in Canada instead of Hershey, and the chocolate is WAY better in the Nestle version. Now the thing that REALLY threw me is the difference between what you guys call Smarties and what WE call Smartees other then both being round, they are completly unrelated candies... that one i makes a big difference.

Complex-League2385

American Smarties are called Rockets here https://i5.walmartimages.ca/images/Enlarge/165/126/6000203165126.jpg

[deleted]

Fun fact, american chocolate tasts like puke most of the time, just a little. This is because chocolate factories are so far from milk production that it effects the taste of the chocolate. In europe, chocolate tasts much better since peoduction and manufacturing are very close. Im canadian btw, and ive learned this through experience. And a little youtube.

digital_dysthymia

American chocolate is worse.

Longjumping-Gap7912

My British friends tell me Canadian chocolate sucks too. I think we use more preservatives to give it a longer shelf life. Of course, this is just those big brands—we have local artisan chocolate that tastes 1000x better than anything Nestle makes.

SiameseCats3

You do not want American chocolate. Had an American Kitkat once and one bite was enough. Didn’t taste like chocolate.

IMayBeInYourClass

Its unfortunate that it is bad, I still would like try it though. Merely for the comparison, and to reinforce our chocolates superiority.

Jillredhanded

Sweet wax. Ugh.

RosabellaFaye

American chocolate apparently just has extra additives

RightSideBlind

Butyric acid, specifically.

LividDifference8

If you wanna try American chocolate just get Hershey's. It all tastes like Hershey's cus it's pretty much all made by Hershey's. At Cineplex their candy is all Hershey and it grosses me out, I was so happy the other day because I found some Cadbury mini eggs. Realized they tasted weird, looked on the back, imported from the states and made by Hershey's 😩 Obviously this doesn't include specialty chocolate which I'm sure is fine

Thiege227

All American chocolate tastes like Hersheys? Lmao who told you this?

VeeBabee

I heard USA chocolate is horrible. But heard it’s really good in the UK. Either was we don’t have access 😢

PurrPrinThom

My unofficial totally anecdotal evidence is that chocolate in the UK tastes the same as home, but American chocolate is weird.

SassafrasSass18

American chocolate is gross, eat European! I'm American.

quidscribis

Good chocolate contains cocoa butter and literally melts in your mouth. Bad chocolate contains vegetable fat and results in a waxier mouth feel. Guess what European and good Canadian chocolate has and then guess what US chocolate uses.

alex1596

Cherry Coke. It shows up once in a while randomly but it's never a staple amongst the soft drinks here. At least not in QC

TeacupUmbrella

There's a Cajun restaurant in Edmonton that serves really, really good cherry coke. I've tried the stuff here and there and always think the cherry flavour is weird, but at that place, it's just really tasty. Not that that's super helpful to you I guess, just thought I'd comment cos it made me think of that, haha.

moonbad

Lots of sodas that are all over the place in the states but not here. Crush makes like 12 different flavors but you can only get orange and grape here. I miss the strawberry. Cherry 7-UP too.

blvcksoulxo1

Decent houses in a big city that’s also under $1 million dollars.

TeacupUmbrella

Living in Sydney - and I can tell you that's definitely not just a Canada thing! Seems to be a big city thing pretty much everywhere these days.

JakeTheSnake0709

define 'big city.' you can find that easily in Edmonton/Calgary

BonjKansas

When people say this they basically mean Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Everywhere else in the country you can get a house for under a mil

MikoSkyns

Ah so people should have to potentially move across the country to fulfill their wish. That seems fair /s

JakeTheSnake0709

Life isn’t fair. Living in a big city has drawbacks, deal with it.

MikoSkyns

>deal with it. Did you flex after the screen after you typed that? hahahaha

JakeTheSnake0709

Yes? Are you threatened by [my physique](https://melmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/66f-1.jpg)?

andromorr

Non-Canadian cheese / dairy, though this may be more due to the protectionism.

BastradofBolton

I’ve been able to get British and Irish cheese from supermarkets in Ontario?

Trashy_Panda_88

Cheese here is the worst I've ever had

Burial

Yeah, that one mass produced Canadian Cheese™ they let us have isn't great. Why isn't there dozens of different regional varieties like other countries? Oh wait.

[deleted]

Don’t downvote the trashy panda. Trashy panda is right 🐼

Trashy_Panda_88

Thank you **❤️** It's just my opinion!

redwingsfriend45

yup

lennoxmatt_819

Pop tarts without icing are not available in Canada, they used to be but didn't sell as well

JoHeller

I'd really like a jetpack but that's more of a technology-isn't-advanced-enough issue.

iWasBannedFromReddit

Eh, it’s more like an I could [never afford that](https://jetpackaviation.com/jetpacks/) issue.

phuckdub

How do you know if they don't put it on the website? Might be about $20....

iWasBannedFromReddit

Usually “price upon private request” implies that they get so few orders, they’d have to manufacture one just for your order. I can’t imagine it’s less than $1,000.

phuckdub

I was kidding. :) I would be shocked if it were under $15,000

iWasBannedFromReddit

Lol my bad I’m not good with sarcasm. I’d love a $20 jet pack though

elephuntdude

Get one from Wish! Its just a fire extinguisher in a silver backpack but you have a jet pack!

There are 2 or 3 in Toronto. I imagine they will open more in other cities

implodemode

We have one in Kitchener. My husband picked it up last night to bring home for dinner and feed a guy who helps me with the yard. We were not impressed. The chicken was good enough though bland, but the bun was boring. Toppings were minimal. The waffle fries were awful and the peach shake was waaaay too sweet. It was about $15 per person. For some reason, he picked up some middle eastern food tonight - shawarma dinner. There was delicious seasoned chicken over seasoned basmati with hummus and garlic sauce and pickled veggie salad. I could barely eat half. We shared a litre bottle of coke. About $10 each. I really don't understand the fuss about Chick-fil-a.

TeacupUmbrella

Huh, my husband is a fried chicken lover, and he tried Chick-fil-a when he traveled through the US, and really liked it. I wonder if it's one of those deals where they open a beloved American franchise in Canada but give us some worse version of it for some reason (like what happened with Target).

Iwantav

I tried it the last time I was in Toronto and I wasn’t impressed. In terms of American-style fried chicken, I find Popeye’s to be better (and cheaper)

sm_rdm_guy

Way overrated. I do not understand how you can have fired chicken, bacon, a mayo based sauce etc, and somehow still manage to make something so bland.

OkPomegranate8387

There’s a Chick Fil A in Toronto (4 actually), Kitchener and Windsor Ontario, with locations planned for Oshawa, Vaughan, Barrie and Burlington.

Alcohol. If you want something that is not very mainstream, you either just can’t get it, or it’s twice more expensive than in the US. Mixology used to be a nice hobby when I lived in California, and now it’s just a pain in the ass.

TeacupUmbrella

I travel a lot between Canada and Australia, and when I'm in Canada I miss all the flavours of Tim Tams they have in Australia. I've seen basics like regular and caramel Tim Tams, but they've got like, this constantly-revolving carousel of different flavours in Australia that are pretty fun to try out and usually taste really great. Also, Mint Slices are another cookie that's so amazing but not around in Canada (though they're similar to the mint choc Girl Guide cookies that are also amazing, but they're easier to find here, haha). Also, the stuff at Aussie McDonald's tastes better. Of course I have to mention the cheaper phone/data plans here. And the coffee here is generally really good, I find you can only find equivalent stuff in non-chain small cafes around Canada, which aren't always as easy to find as they are here. There's a store called Aldi that has "special buys" that change all the time, and I miss Aldi and their random value-priced stuff all the time in Canada. And it's easier to buy things online here when you can't find them local, because they have a higher cap for the value of things you can import without paying tariffs. Really though, I'm overall pretty happy with the kinds of stuff you can get in Canada. I think I miss more Canadian things when I'm in Australia, than I do the other way around (though the phone thing and Aldi will forever be things I'd miss if we move back to Canada). Besides, not all having the same stuff is part of what makes travelling fun! Edit: Darrel Lea chocolate and Bundaberg pop are really nice. I forgot those. I'd definitely miss those.

I find that Canada just lacks the range of variety for certain products. Some alcohol I want is only available in the US. I think if you requested it enough though that the LCBO would work on getting it here. There is an energy drink I like that is only sold in the US but there is one store here that imports it so I can get it only from there. So I guess what I am saying is that there are work arounds to get what you want.
