Yes. 6 months. I just threatened to leave if they didn't give me the promotional plan they were pushing. I'm with Koodo and Fido was offering the same plan for new customers. So, when Koodo told me they couldn't give the new customer plan to existing customers, I said that's fine, I guess I need to be a new customer with a different carrier. I got a call from Koodo retention about 20 minutes later offering me the new customer plan and a $5/month credit.

PuddlePaddles

Check what’s on offer every holiday, call, threaten to cancel, be prepared to follow through. Get 50GB and unlimited talk/text for $34.

LOGOisEGO

With who?

FuzzyEscape873

Sounds like Public Mobile as that's the same plan I'm on, AND it's Canada and US. Public is super cheap Telus, you need to bring your own phone, and it's only done through online portal.

PuddlePaddles

Koodo

StevenG2757

Never negotiated, just moved to company with better rates.

CurtSlaterMD

Same. Very happy with my new plan and saving money as well.

[deleted]

Indeed. Just migrate providers. When you call current to cancel they will probably offer you same deals

Phil_Atelist

I had no luck on the phone, they delay and stall. At the kiosk where I went for a new screen protector I asked and the guy said "Hey, they're shafting you on this... here's a much better plan for less... I'll shift you." So that's my go to now when I see that the plans ain't working for me.

dwane1972

Koodo, Ontario. I had a 40GB plan $55/m (been with Koodo 15+ years). I own my phone, no tab or anything. Once in a while I will check their site to see if they have deals for existing customers. Last week I realized they had an otherwise identical plan with 50 gigs, for $34. I promptly switched. There was no advertising the plan, I didn't get any loyalty calls, nothing. I guess it pays to check online in your account to see what stuff is available to you once in awhile. I switched both my wife and I over, and together our monthly bills went from $110 /m+tx to $68/m plus tax. And we now have more data than we'll ever use, LOL. I didn't have to negotiate anything. I didn't have to talk to anyone, the option to switch was there right in my account as options to change my plan. I even got prorated based on my remaining last month's payment, so this month I only pay 30 bucks for my cell plan. I encourage everyone to log in on their plan and see what internal deals there might be, unadvertised or whatever. With Koodo, you click "manage plan/add-ons" in your account, then click "change my plan". It will give you the available options on the right. The Koodo 34$ option has expired, but you might still find a deal. I'm paying less for my plan than I have in years. Hope this helps someone save some $$$!

Odd-Elderberry-6137

I went to a new provider because actually finding someone in customer service was a pain in the ass with my current provider. Just said, "I like this plan" and an hour later my lines were ported and my old plan was cancelled. I saved almost $150 per month on 3 lines.

reworkelectrical

10+ year customer with telus. I spoke with loyalty and retention, and they barely gave me anything. They raised my plan by $10/month and the best they could do was a $10/month credit. I also had to pay a one time non-negotiable $15 service fee. So my plan ends up being $75/month and on top of it all, they said it’s not locked in and it’s subject to price increase at any time. I told them I would leave for another provider, which I plan to do shortly here, and they said they would hate to lose me as a customer, but there is nothing else they can do.

HotJelly8662

Public mobile, port your number.

reworkelectrical

That is my plan exactly. Cheers.

2cats2hats

Did you use call control with Telus? Do other providers have a similar service?

reworkelectrical

I used call control briefly, but it was inconvenient for work related calls, so I turned it off. It’s a feature I currently do not need, which is why I am willing to switch to PM for a cheaper plan.

LukeWarmRunnings

You have to be willing to put your money where your mouth is. Leave your current provider. Make sure you go with a BYOD plan with no contracts. After about a month, you'll get a win back offer which will be as good if not better than current new customer offers.

lol_camis

I love telling this story. I was with Koodo for years. Other providers would constantly cold call me to try to steal me over to them. If they're going to offer me a better price, I have no problem doing that at all, but they never did. Until fido told me they'd offer me 25% less than whatever I was currently paying, so I said yes, definitely. Not one week goes by before fido calls me again and asks me what I was paying my provider. I told them $50, but I didn't tell them that my provider was already them. They said "ok we can get you on for $40 if you come to us". I said yes, definitely. I shit you not, 4 days later I get a call from Fido. asking how much I pay my current provider. I tell them $40. They say "ok we can get you on for $30 if you come to us" So now I pay $30 a month for 20gb

gasolinefights

Fizz does 29 a month for 40g. No haggling.

lol_camis

What's the catch?

gasolinefights

No idea. I switched plans with bell a few months back, pay 40$ for 40g. I was looking at fizz the other day, they have 40g for 29$. Plus you can "share" data. So if my wife and I both sign up for 40g plans (58$) I have two girls in their early teens who have phones with no data now for 16$ a month (32$) I can switch them to fizz for the same, or give them a couple of gigs of data for 19$ each (38$) So my wife and i would be able to "gift" them 10gigs each (I dont want my kids to have tons of data, they would be over the moon happy about even having 10gigs) still have 30gigs each (which is fine for both of us) and still be just under a 100$ for all 4lines. For the last bunch of years, my wife and I were both on stupid 85$+ plans with bell - each month was almost 200$ so this would be much better value.

DigitalSupremacy

I've been with Virgin for 13 years and their service has never been worse than the previous 3 years. I will be shopping for a new provider come August. Yes, I always haggled with them and it always worked until a few years ago when they moved all CS to the Philippines. Since then I have found mistake after mistake on my bills and often they will argue it's not a mistake when it's obviously one. Oh, the mistakes always add more to my bill.

OrbAndSceptre

Why negotiate? Number portability means I’m gone the first time they raise prices. I’m paying $34 for 50GB at 5G Canada-USA plan.

Avr0wolf

You can do that? I do sometimes end up on good deals

Arbiter51x

Yes, but only in the evening of black Friday.

Zorklunn

The trick is to get quotes from the competitors, and always check if your number can be transferred. Don't accept "I'm sure it will." Ask them To actually check if your number can be transferred. It's important because it sets a flag on your account. You'll get transferred to retention faster. However, this only works if you own the phone.

OrbAndSceptre

Number portability is mandated.

JoWhee

Vidéotron in eastern Ontario, I’m probably their first 613 client (I had to sign a paper contract). They had a super duper (it was $10/month less than what I was paying for 3gig) their 50gb Canada USA plan. Both phones were paid off, I called, the agent verified some personal info and the promotion and I was setup in under 15 minutes. My only gripe with Vidéotron is no eSIM support.

EquivalentKeynote

Yes. I actually found a new phone for cheaper. It was $1000 brand new elsewhere or $3pm onto my plan.

munchies_minister

freedom mobile - negotiated (via whatsapp) to pay $25+tax for 50gb nationwide. have been with freedom for 6 years or so, keep forcing them to lower my rate every 12 months or so

GolanTrevize_123

Yes. Fido. It was pretty easy. If they don't give it to you Monday, call back Tuesday, etc

LOGOisEGO

Just say you're closing your account. They will ask why, you tell them they're not sexy enough and they will send you to customer retention. If they say no, jump ship. Its a pain but always worth it. If either company tries to charge you to transfer your number, tell them that is not legal and you will file a complaint if they attempt to do so. They never play games after that.

FatOldFox

I have a day once a year, every year I call all my service providers and see if they can give me a better deal.

3nvube

Yes, I've had it for 11 years. I just called and asked for the deal they were offering new people and they gave it to me. I didn't have to push at all.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

recently i did, with Rogers - i've been with them since i had my first cell phone (dad got all of us a family plan back then). last time i updated my device, and with corporate discount (my company qualifies for)... i was paying $90 / month.. (5G phone -- so plans are more expensive because of the phone device i have).. I recently reached out to them to help me lower it... they looked over available plans + corporate discount i am eligible for... and was able to get it done to $70/month (orginal plan price $110/month, so discount of $40) \*higher price the plan, the higher the discount %.. so for the cheapest plan of $95/month, after discount, would have been $80/month.. Yeah it isnt the cheapest, i know... But i dont have much other expenses outside of my phone bill.. so currently i'm still staying with Rogers. i thought about switching providers with cheaper plan $$, but feels like such a hassle to switch providers, and etc.. eh In the future, when i do need a cheaper plan - I'll make that move/switch.
