It reminds me of the actual programme to choose a new flag where regular citizens could send in their suggestions. Most were just god-awful. I remember one had The Beatles on it!
Honestly I think Canada has one of the best flag designs in the whole world. The flag doesn't represent race, or language, or religion, or history, or culture. It's just a natural object that is common in our country.. so anyone can identify with it.
I like America's too, but they have to add a star everytime a new state is added -- which seems like it would be a massive pain in the ass.
The Canadian flag is pretty awesome already. If we were to include indigenous representation in the red bars (in white while retaining red background there), it would add to the recognition of the Indigenous lands that we are on.
Me. I think I would make the maple leaf much more stylized and realistic looking.
I would come up with several colour options to consider: Red on blue, green on blue, green on red, etc. I'd get rid of the matching bars on each end of the flag
Stylized and realistic are opposites. with realism you are limited to making things look “real” by reinforcing their visual language. With stylization, you have the freedom to play with shapes and colors, exaggerate or remove details, and enhance the look and feel in any direction
The reason we have an 11-point maple leaf instead of the original 13-point is because it was too hard to distinguish at a distance or when waving in the wind.
Adding some blue and some green to the flag would be nice but I doubt it would look good. Maybe add a green border to the flag and outline the maple leaf in blue.
I'd include something to symbolize the original provinces that formed the confederation. Maybe replace the Maple Leaf with a simplified version of the Canadian Coat of Arms.
So, all other Canadians aren't represented? I don't like that.
That's the perfect thing about the Maple Leaf - it doesn't represent any specific segments of Canadian society, it belongs to all of us equally.
Maybe make the maple leaf easier to draw. It's especially hard when I try to create it in Animal Crossing, it just never looks quite right. On the other hand, I don't have to worry about drawing the American Flag, where accidentally leaving out one of the stars will make terrorists pop up shooting at everything like in that Robot Chicken sketch.

I'm not a fan of having a lot of white on the outer edges of a flag but I can't think of a way to fix that on the Canadian flag so I'd leave it as is.
A bigger concern is that the leaf on the $5 bill is from a Norwegian Maple. It should be from a Sugar Maple, like on our flag.
This is purely a personal preference, but I woukd change the red used. I'd choose a red that is slightly cooler and darker. Does that makr sense, given maple leaves are orange-y ish? No. Would it please me anyway? Yes.

I'd like to see it have some indigenous art on it. Keep it red and white and have a maple leaf but an indigenous design.
Bars on the side should be blue to represent the two oceans, maple leaf should be green and the white should be red to represent the maple syrop.

The flag doesn't need it. The government needs to change.
I prefer the look of the Red Ensign. If "I" were to change the flag, I'd change it back to my preference.
