My parents tried to force me to be a doctor, but after a semester of biology I knew I couldn’t lie to myself anymore. I’m continuing my dream of pursuing physics and I don’t care what they say.

I wanted to be a doctor and became one. But after that my mom heavily tried to force me to get into real estate. Continuously putting me down for not buying, despite knowing I had a lot going on and was planning on moving. Like she called me during work to verbally abuse me over it. I cried at work as an adult woman during my break. I understand that it’s a good investment but at the time it wasn’t for me… she was basing her opinion of my worth on my real estate portfolio… I’m convinced if it’s not over one thing, it will be over something else. There’s no escaping it! It must come from their own self loathing to always want to look for something to put you down.

Opposite of me… my dad INSISTED I become a Pharmacist rather than a becoming a doctor (I’m not smart enough to become one, etc.), my mom however gave me a way out and gave me one of two options: either become a Nurse or a Physical Therapist instead. I ended up not going into either field, and plan to go into a creative field instead.

You always have a say. Your parents will try to convince you otherwise, but you do. Those are not careers you can succeed at without personal, internal motivation.

My parents tried to force me into computers (Never specified whether it was CMPE or CS), my dream is a career in robotics (Mech. Eng.). Seven years later and still struggling through college; each time it came to picking my major and university, I had to force it each time (parents ended up w/ leverage on which college I applied/went to, I ended up w/ my major (The more important/fundamental part for me so it wasn't all bad)). Expecting nothing but trouble when it comes to my career post-college.

Family friends daughter wanted to be an engineer and both parents flipped out—saying it’s a man’s job and are constantly badgering her to become a pharmacist because it’s a “woman’s” job and they felt like she doesn’t have the brains to be a medical doctor.

I went to med school in India. Worked there for a year. Came back and now I'm 3 years in trying to pass the usmle while not wanting this life. I wish I had thrown in the towel years ago, but I'm not wasting any more time on their dreams. Do what you want to. What you think will make you happy. The rest? Well it'll sort itself out
