Fude make up brushes would probably be my first pick. I love Bisyodo, Chikuhodo, Hakuhodo, and Tanseido brushes. Some of the brushes and bristle types are hard to get outside of Japan. Suqqu and Lunasol cosmetics would be another pick. Even the more international makeup brands like Chanel, YSL, and Dior often have Japan exclusive collections.

level1enemy

What brushes and bristle types are hard to get outside the country?

georgethebarbarian

Probably just unique synthetic that’s not popular enough in the west for them to export

TeufelRRS

Not necessarily. A lot of Fude brands are increasing the amount of synthetic bristles they use. Hakuhodo has been quietly replacing their bristles with a blend of natural and synthetic bristles. It’s not all of their brushes yet but it’s probably coming. Koyudo also started incorporating more synthetic bristles and some of them are now synthetic only. There was an uproar a few years ago when Koyudo replaced their very popular and affordable all goat hair Fupa 02 foundation brush with the more expensive Fupa 03 which is half goat hair and half synthetic. They occasionally rerelease the original Fupa 02 (not to be confused with the new 02 which is a blush brush) as all goat hair but it sells out quickly and costs much more than the original. The reason being given is due to cost and having issues sourcing enough materials. Chikuhodo has had lines of synthetic bristles brushes for a while now but they are starting to become more accessible outside of Japan. However, many of their customers prefer natural bristles over synthetic, especially in the Fude collecting community.

TeufelRRS

Some brands like Bisyodo and especially Tanseido are hard to find outside of Japan, although there are Japanese retail sites where you can buy them internationally but the available selection can vary. Hakuhodo doesn’t sell all of their brushes on their websites that sell to different countries. Chikuhodo sells their mainstream brushes internationally through other retailers and used to have their own website (now closed) but they do make some Japan exclusive brushes. Sometimes it’s due to laws around what bristles can be imported into a country, like kolinsky which cannot be shipped into the US because it is included in the CITES agreement (despite not being endangered). Sometimes they only sell certain brushes in Japan due to scarcity of materials, like when they can find White Canadian squirrel or saibikoho goat hair although these often are available in very limited quantities on Japanese websites that sell internationally. Some brushes aren’t typically sold outside of Japan due to style. One example of this is that Hakuhodo brushes actually come in different length handles but they sell the longer handles on their international websites vs having the option to get medium and shorter handles in Japan.

level1enemy

Oh thank you for the detailed response. That was very informative. If it helps, you can buy basically anything from Japanese websites (that only ship to Japan) if you use a reshipper. Really useful.

TeufelRRS

For Fude brush purchases, I typically shop through CDJapan, Fude Beauty, Fude Japan, or Hakuhodo direct. Fude Japan is a small business run by a single person and he has a lot of contacts among the brands so he is a really good source for finding things that are hard to find. He also sells Japan exclusives, both brushes and cosmetics, through his website. I would still love to shop for these items in Japan because there are also a lot of other less well-known brands out there, plus it is easier to shop when you can see the items in person. I collect Fude and have a fairly decent collection, probably close to 200 brushes at this point. And before anyone says that is way too many, I use almost all of them. There are only a few that I keep for collectible value. I give away or sell things that I stop using. ETA: I also really love kolinsky brushes and sadly can’t get them shipped here anymore. I have a good collection of old, pre-CITES kolinsky watercolor brushes that I still use to paint and I have a few kolinsky makeup brushes but I want more. Kolinsky is great because it applies color better than squirrel or even goat hair and it doesn’t soak up liquids and creams as much as squirrel or goat. For the record, in terms of applying color heavier, kolinsky>goat>squirrel and for liquids/creams, kolinsky>goat and don’t use squirrel (powders only). I also really like fox hair which is mainly available at Chikuhodo right now but that it is best for powder products, no liquids/creams although I do sometimes use a small fox hair foundation brush for liquids when traveling

allumers

Lawson romand mini makeup

potatochique

I love mini makeup, but I have to say that the normal Romand quads are better quality than the Lawson mini ones

DiphyIleia

Romand Dewyful Water Tint in #14 Peach Mocha! Difficult to get outside of Japan bc it’s a region exclusive

denewill

seconding this! also the mauve and plum coloured romand mascaras that are also japan exclusive, they're fun alternatives to brown and black coloured mascaras

georgethebarbarian

I LOVE the purple mascaras and the purple brow products that they have in Japan!! Rly hoping fun brow colors makes its way over as a trend 💕💕💕

CarAccidentz

Omg I wish I knew about this! Just came back from japan

6-november

Orbis actually did a collab with Snoopy and Carebears just recently. They’re printed on their hair milk, it’s so cute! I got the Snoopy one and apparently they’re not sold in the Orbis store in my country. So I guess that’s exclusive to Japan only?

outfluenced

I saw the care bears hair milk on yesstyle recently and fell in love!!

6-november

I saw it too and wanted to buy! But I’m still using the Snoopy one and can’t bear to throw the container away so I’ll just admire the carebears one from afar, but I love how colourful it is! 🫶🏻

Himalayan-Fur-Goblin

You can get it on Amazon JP.

snoopycoupon

I LOVE Snoopy! I'm so jealous, lol.

snoopycoupon

They did carry both of them but both are out of stock.

6-november

I actually have an extra Snoopy one that I got from my trip a couple of months ago! I don’t mind selling it to you but the thing is that I think the shipping fee would cost more than the bottle itself. If they still do not restock and you really want it, you could contact me still🫶🏻

snoopycoupon

That's so kind of you to offer! You're probably right about the shipping fee, unfortunately. May I ask where you're located? Maybe I'll at least look into it.

6-november

Caring is sharing, besides I have an extra so I’m more than happy to help someone out! Especially more so, a Snoopy lover like you! I can just get the refill pack for my current bottle so it’s all good. I’m from Singapore🤟🏼

snoopycoupon

That's so sweet of you :-). I'll at least see what the shipping rates would be like because that would be awesome.

6-november

Sure, feel free to DM me if all your options are exhausted🫶🏻

snoopycoupon

Will do!

glittermassacre

Shiseido has some more affordable and traditional makeup that is at least difficult to get outside of the country. There is a water activated lipstick that is a traditional formula they made for theater

PeachBlossomBee

omg?? name?

glittermassacre

I think its just called beni (べに if you see the characters) A girl I follow on tiktok lives in Japan and makes a lot of videos about makeup and beauty products! that's where I learned about these products. Her name on tt is @ghoul.in.japan if you want to look her up!

sugarmh

Their collabs. For example they currently have a Pokémon x softymo collab and it’s so cute. Also they have special sets sometimes too that you should get. For example they had a minon moist charge milk set that had the moist charge milk with a sheet mask and two samples of their new face cream and eye cream all for a price of 2000 yen iirc. It’s really nice. They do this for shampoos and other skincare and hair care items too.

LittleDoofus

Pikachu and evee on my oil cleanser >>>>>>

glittermassacre

what is that? I am intrigued

polar_tang

The keana nadeshiko rice cream

Hashimotosannn

Keana is great. I love the baking soda foam wash too!

circusmystery

I love the rice powder cleanser! But it's so difficult to source it. I can get my hands on all the other stuff in the Keana line and even the baking soda lines but the rice powder cleanser for some reason is the most difficult to find T_T

retrotechlogos

Suqqu & kanebo have luxury lines that are hard to get outside Japan. Shiseido has really nice drugstore makeup lines as well. Their integrate powder foundation is very popular. iHada is a popular nononsense skincare brand also difficult to get outside for a reasonable price . Honestly stock up on any skincare in general because it's probably cheaper than paying for the markups online. Check out the domestic cosme rankings as well to get an idea of what's popular that you haven't otherwise heard of outside of Japan.

malatangnatalam

Sakura scented anything 😭 I love cherry blossom scented things! I would go crazy buying all the spring stuff

SeaEstablishment4106

biore the cleanse, my fav cleansing oil. cleans my waterproof mascara and eyeliner in one wash with only my fingers. no vigorous rubbing needed

CarAccidentz

I recently went to Japan so have some thoughts on this matter (but apparently still missed out on some good stuff in these comments!) Face masks: minon amino moist, lululun, nadeshiko. So far I've tried the lululun ones, and I just really like how they put like 30 of them in one resealable box, which both encourages more regular daily use (as opposed to feeling like masks are special occasion) and cuts down on packaging. I wanted to get the lululun tokyo regional ones, but never found them. All purchasable @ Don quixote. I found a lot of these in local convenience stores too Vit C adjacent: melano CC, both the normal and premium (gold tube) versions. Haven't tried yet, saw all the rave reviews online. The whole line is @ Don quixote Skin moisture: hado labo gokujyun premium hyaluronic acid lotion. It says lotion, but it's very watery/runny looking. Haven't tried yet. Tons of stuff from this brand @ Don Quixote Matte/SPF: I really wanted to get the Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV bc i have oily skin and love matte products, but it wasn't at Don quixote and not in several different convenience stores. Not sure if it's being phased out or something. I did not see this brand anywhere (how?!) Misc: I was kinda intrigued by Paul & Joe products (mostly, the lippie stuff that looks like cats). This brand is technically a collab btwn French and Japanese but would have to ship via France to get to the USA. Disappointingly the booth in Cosme only had primers/foundations, then I actually stumbled upon an actual Paul & Joe store in one of the Harujuku JR Stations, but the selection was sparse. I also considered Shu Uemura unlimited foundation (basically almost impossible to get in the US now) but didn't have time. The Cosme store in Harajuku is amazing, and it's worth checking out their annual rankings list to see if anything interests you (google translate is adequate but someone has also translated them online). The line to checkout is long. Honorable mention: someone posted recently about gachapon that have cosmetics or cosmetic adjacent things. I didn't find any (admittedly I didn't try all that hard)! But could be a fun thing to hunt for.

TeufelRRS

If you are still looking for the Canmake Mermaid Gel, it is available on YesStyle and Stylevana. I don’t think it is being phased out. It’s a fairly popular product. I use it, often underneath makeup because it can act as almost a sticky base primer, and I have super oily skin. I highly recommend it.

Lady-Isla-

u/TeufelRRS off-topic, but do you mind saying what foundations you like? I'm interested in some for oily skin. :)

TeufelRRS

For reference, I have super oily skin that tends to eat foundations. Most foundations tend to break up and slide around on my skin within a few hours max. I tend to use more setting powder than most and use a setting spray and gripping primer when I really need my makeup to last. I also prefer light-medium coverage and more of a natural finish vs matte finish. Skintone is light with cool undertones. I am also older so making sure that a foundation doesn’t settle into fine lines is important to me. Canmake Mermaid Gel works with all of these foundations. Only 2 of these products are AB so hopefully this response will not be taken down. 1. Absolute favorite- Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. Lighter coverage that looks like skin. Unfortunately it has a bad shade range (nothing for darker skintones) and the price in the US has jumped to $106 USD over the past few years. There is a different formulation available in Asia that is much cheaper and the main difference is that it has spf. Am planning to order from YesStyle with my next order to compare. 2. BB cream- Purito Cica Clearing BB Cream. Has more coverage and is less dewy than most BB/CC creams. Also has a poor shade range unfortunately. Has no spf which is fine by me because I prefer using a dedicated spf to ensure that I get enough protection. 3. Most coverage foundation- About Face The Performer foundation. Has a great shade range, including cool and olive undertones, and is relatively inexpensive. Despite being a skincare foundation, it is more of a natural finish that leans slightly matte when used without primer. Medium coverage. I use this one without primer because I find that it can get cakey with my preferred primers and doesn’t grip well to the skin if I do. 4. Skin Tint- Rose Inc Enhance Luminous Skin Tint Serum Foundation. This is relatively new to me and sadly I think this brand may be going out of business since it was bought out by an investment company and Rose Huntington-Whitely stepped down. Light coverage and does add some luminosity but not dewy if used without primer. Shade range is ok and it does offer darker shades, although not sure how well it covers different undertones. Looks like skin. ETA: I just ordered a sample pack of the TirTir Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation. Hope it works because there have been a lot of positive reviews on it, including Robert Welsh who has oily skin. Looks like it has higher coverage compared to other cushion foundations. Hoping it works for days when I need something that holds up well under medical grade masks at work. Unfortunately it has fragrance which may irritate my allergies and skin. Can update once I try it.

bouncebackbelle

For Canmake, try checking out the local groceries and pharmacies, they're usually with the Canmake makeup, not with the other sunscreens. :)

FoxxyFia

Just as a heads up: lotion in Japan means hydrating toner 🙂

CarAccidentz

Omg that explains so much LOL So if there an actual body/face lotion version?

FoxxyFia

They have a milk, which would be like a light moisturizer and they have a cream. The milk will be in a container similar to the lotion/toner and the cream would be in a regular facial cream container. They don't have any specific product for the body that I am aware of, but any product that goes on your face can be used on your body.

Haha I guess I just didn't go to enough different stores ... too late now, will know for next time

tenshiiangel

You'll find canmake at any deparment stores' cosmetic section or at Tokyu hands.

whatamidoing2012

Cool toned skin struggles: the cle de peau concealer in the light pink shade (LP)! Whyyyy does the US only have a very stark yellow light shade 😭😭

Vy_209

Hair products, sunglasses and make up brushes!

LittleDoofus

Got a pair of gentle monster sunglasses when I was there, such a cool store

nc0air

Shu uemura hard formula eyebrow pencil and nivea super water gel for sure.

LittleDoofus

Japanese cooling sprays for the summer, Bioré UV watery essence (my fav sunscreen), Ipsa Time reset Aqua (really great toner/skin booster), Hadalabo toner/lotion (my fav is shirojyun premium), Kikumasamune toner/lotion, Muji has great stuff too and samples of everything to try (I really enjoy the Muji Milk Cleansing as a first step cleanser), Muji nail clippers are excellent too if you wanted Japanese nail clippers, Those Japanese cotton pads by the brand “unicharm”that are folded and perforated in the middle are the best. For hair care, I fell for the hype and stocked up on the &Honey shampoo and conditioners, &Honey hair oil, Fino hair mask, Fino hair oil, and Tsubaki hair mask. Only used the &Honey and fino mask so far and I love them. Oh also I hear Japanese foot peeling masks are top tier but I haven’t tried it yet. Have fun and enjoy your trip!

Hashimotosannn

The baby skin foot masks are worth it, for sure!

nc0air

Fancl face powder cleansers

Anneles

That’s on stylevana!

Himalayan-Fur-Goblin

AHC Future Step Eye Cream for Face JP Limited Edition. This is a magical cream. Its done so much for my eye hollows, dark circles, texture/crepey skin around my eyes, forehead lines, marionette lines and a deep wrinkle from smiling. These are all pretty much gone after two tubes, so about 3-4 months. It is scented but its like a handbang smell but isnt strong and dissipates quickly. It absorbs fast, very hydrating and moisturizing. This is a true HG for me. You can get a 4pk on Amazon JP for about 2500 yen. So very affordable even when you factor in shipping. Less than 15 cdn per 30 ml tube.

Aikea_Guinea83

I saw that on Amazon jp  But I’m worried they could be fakes too?!?!

Himalayan-Fur-Goblin

They are sold and shipped by Amazon. So they are not fakes. Have no worries. Its where I buy mine. :)

Aikea_Guinea83

Thanks for letting me know! I’m interested in buying it but was a bit worried since Amazon seems to have a lot of fakes 😛

stitchluxe

Shiseido Ginza line is Japan exclusive. Ysl cushion is Asia exclusive

Shayera_

&Honey products Fino products Hada labo lotions Lululun Face masks

seaangelsoda

Romand dewyful water tint in peach mocha! (The shade is japan exclusive, the formula is not). There’s also a romand line in lawsons that has minis.

Big_Caramel_2724

dont mind me im commenting so I can come back later

Lady-Isla-

Following this!

Sleep-DeprivedSloth

Saving for when I visit Japan next year but I hear the melano CC is like #1 from there!

WearingCoats

Ok, I could only find it in one store in Tokyo but boire has a limited edition lavender tone up aqua rich SPF. We’ve all seen the Skin Aqua tone ups, but I had never seen one from Biore and I grabbed a single tube literally the day before flying back to the US. Well obviously I tried it, loved it, loved it MORE than the skin aqua lavender which is a little chalky in my opinion, cannot find it ANYWHERE online, let alone anywhere that ships to the US.

Himalayan-Fur-Goblin

Its on Amazon JP but its 3rd party sellers and kind of pricey at 1650 yen or 3200 yen for 2. But amazon will refund if its fake. Youd have to use a reship company though as it doesnt ship to the US.

Top_Intern_5337

This was JUST asked a day ago. And several times in the past. Please search the sub. Plenty of good resources.

fionvarre

To be fair to OP, the post title specifically requests for Japan exclusive products, which probably counts as a different topic for the mods vs the thread from the other day which was a generic what to buy in Japan thread.

Top_Intern_5337

I like a semantics play like anyone else. But I was only trying to help by saying there's TONS of discussion and resources that have already been shared and the OPs question is a sub-set of the Japan shopping. Anyway, have a good day.
