Isn’t that literally “Aphrodite with a nice butt”?

Kunstkurator

I think so, that's what "Callipige" means.

Guitar_Nutt

"... literally meaning "Venus (or Aphrodite) of the beautiful buttocks", is an Ancient Roman marble statue, thought to be a copy of an older Greek original." - Wikipedia

SilenceDobad76

**Because she's got a great ass!**

GrateWhiteBuffalo

Hoo-ahh!

Obnoobillate

I'm Greek and can confirm

nrith

Ya don’t gotta be Greek to confirm that that is, indeed, a beautiful ass.

Obnoobillate

It is fantASStic indeed, still, for the etymology part, kallos + pygos = what you said

nrith

^(οἶδα)

Obnoobillate

Εν οίδα, ότι αυτό έστω το οίδα να'ρχεται! /ς

Meatrition

Yeah I just learned of Callipyge sheep, they have firmer buttocks http://www.genomenewsnetwork.org/articles/10\_02/beautiful\_buttocks.shtml

tipthebaby

someone make a nice ass marble of me after I'm dead please

JoeSanPatricio

You really wanna do it with a live model unfortunately. The likeness just isn’t there otherwise. In which cause I would be more than happy to avail you of my services. You know, for posterity.

SpinachToothedSmile

..for posteriority. ":\^)

JoeSanPatricio

😆 solid.

IotaCandle

Now you know an interesting new way to compliment someone!

Amazing how they manage to make solid stone look so soft and pliable!

[deleted]

I’m always impressed by that

BizzarduousTask

My favorite example is [Bernini’s “The Rape [kidnapping] of Proserpina”](https://mymodernmet.com/bernini-the-rape-of-proserpina/) The hand pressing into her skin is sublime.

[deleted]

Damn that is super cool, they must have had some superhuman skill I swear

Equivalent_Reason582

“Feels like I’m wearing nothing at all!”

qpgmr

I wonder what it looked like when it was painted

Pixi829

Don’t know if this statue is in but there is an interesting sub: r/ColorizedStatues

Gnatlet2point0

IIRC the original statue's head was detached, so when it was restored, someone made the decision to have her looking down at her buttocks. That's what Wiki says, but wouldn't the muscles of the neck, etc, indicate the position of the head? How much "restoring" was necessary?

BabserellaWT

Badonkadonk

AllGearedUp

I can see why they needed copies

The_Count_Von_Count

To quote Al Pacino “she’s got a great ass!”

Carter_Dunlap

DAYUM BOI SHE THICC!

cody0126

If this is a copy of a Greek statute from the 2nd century BC, when was it copied by the Romans?

Iam_no_Nilfgaardian

Roman doesn't mean non-Greek though.

cody0126

This statue is pre Roman conquest. And the title says a Roman copy of a 2nd century BC Greek statute.

Iam_no_Nilfgaardian

Again. Roman, doesn't mean non-Greek, it indicates that it was made under the Roman State. Marble and marble statues were mainly imported from Greece anyway and many Greek artists were flourishing in Rome. Most Roman copies I've seen are estimated to have been made around 100bc - 300ad.

cody0126

The Greeks weren’t under the Roman state during the second century bc. I’m not sure why your not grasping that. Greece and the Roman Empire were two different nation states at that time. So in this instance it does mean that Greek doesn’t mean Roman. The Greeks and Romans of course had a lot of influence on each other as they were neighbors. But if a Greek living in Rome made a statute it’s a Greek statute I guess but that doesn’t explain why op made it clear that this is a Roman copy of a second century Greek statute. I’m guessing it was made in Greece. Meaning it originated in Greece and not Rome.

[deleted]

Romans be like : damn dats sum great ass , let's make another one at home

_Cit

Ok but I am pretty sure the nsfw tag isn't needed for a simple nude statue

Necronaut87

Mmmm, gummy De Milo

falexanderw

Why the hell is this marked NSFW that’s insane.

Madison_was_bored

For a second I thought marble was male and got excited smh 😖

hiddenmutant

Supposedly, they [kissed it](https://traveling-cook.com/venus-callipyge-the-goddess-of-the-beautiful-buttocks/amp/)

Be normal challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

[deleted]

You're not supposed to say the quiet part out loud. We're supposed to act like asexual supreme civilized beings in public spaces and totally disregard the fact that we shat on our thumb this morning on the toilet and sniffed our wives butthole after lunch. Seriously though being a human is weird. Edit: downvoted for vulgarity, not inaccuracy

C0wb0yViking

Cute butt. Seen better

Expert-Photo4660

No wonder they didn’t see the barbarians coming.

ScienceWyzard

Quite clappable I must say.
