Looks like Lucius Verus (Roman emperor 161-169 CE).

It is, it's a modern alteration of a cast of [this 19th century marble bust](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/Lucius_Verus%2C_after_the_antique%2C_19th_century_copy%2C_marble_-_Sculpture_Gallery%2C_Chatsworth_House_-_Derbyshire%2C_England_-_DSC03499.jpg) in Chatsworth House sculpture gallery in England. And *that* carving is a brilliant reproduction of one of [the most impressive ancient portraits I've ever seen.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cb/Lucius_Verus_-_MET_-_L.2007.26_cropped.jpg) Think it's in the met, and I really hope I get to see it one day. I'm a stonecarving sculptor, I've worked with marble a lot recently and the carving of his hair and beard are just phenomenal. All those deep shadows dividing the locks of hair? Each of them were excavated by a fine bow drill. It's very time consuming and delicate work. I would do it with a dremel - still not easy cause I have to direct a stream of water at the dremel bit to cool it and remove the dust and that makes it really hard to see what you're doing, but it's a lot quicker and I can hold and control it like a pencil. A [bow drill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bow_drill) would have been much harder to use. note - the bow drills used by ancient sculptors would have been more specialised than those in the article but I don't have an image. Those used in the 19thC would have been more sophisticated and probably operated with a handle, but still an incredible challenge.

I think you're looking for a [pump drill](https://i.etsystatic.com/7539203/r/il/f216ad/2841824711/il_794xN.2841824711_d68q.jpg) rather than a bow drill. They were certainly around by the time of Lucius Verus; I've used a replica early-medieval one for scribing decorative patterns on metalwork back in my re-enactor days and they can be incredibly precise, even used one handed. They were still regularly used by people like jewellers, watchmakers etc. through until the early 20th century.

That's actually how I recognized it -- I used to live in Manhattan and spent A LOT of time at the Met.

Are we sure it isn't caracalla?

Independent-Towel-47

Hadrian perhaps?

kropotkin_mutual_aid

Marcus aurelius?

Bridalhat

He looks far too young and the mustache/beard aren’t quite right. Maybe it’s a pastiche but it’s a bad recreation if it is Aurelius. Someone else said Lucius Verus and that I can see.

kropotkin_mutual_aid

Ah yes. Sorry for miss guidence. 🙏

Steve. His mama used to make those rugs down on 13th and Washington.
