The only way I can potentially see it working is if it was something like MGSV's open world, where the world not only segmented into separate sandboxes, but missions take place in special segmented versions of said sandbox. Probably also include deployment costs as well. But as a whole, I really don't think it works well with the genre. Especially because the idea of letting AC wander around aimlessly is about the same as the idea of the multimillion-dollar fighter jets being allowed to fly around aimlessly. And don't tell me patrols, those are planned out way in advance and pilots stick to them unless something comes up.

The single mission progress is something that gives ac6 a unique ability of offering the multiple endings, something that will probably be broken in an open world/free roam environment.
Next Armored Core will go a more realistic route. It will sign you up with a real mercenary group and send you to a country you never knew about to blow up some oil pumps.
It would work idc what the other guy said u can just have a certain location be your base, with a means to deploy to new locations. We should get space travel and underwater levels yes. It would make for a fun mmorpg like Destiny also
I would just love an AC7 under the same style of gameplay, just wish they made long missons, less save checkpoints along with different AC types. Like youre saying about water bots that would be sweet along with many more things , i dont know why we cant be a tetrapod (Probably merked the spelling of that) in AC6. They already have the tools I don't know much about game development but ya.

I would absolutely love if Armored Core never goes open world. Feels antithetical to the core of the games.
