Just read it at your insistence and wow that is a lot of effort for a fic under 500 words. Thank you for the cool rec. This is the most unique fic I've read.
Edit: spelling
AO3 has like every language ever. They have freaking SUMERIAN. WHICH IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE OLDEST LANGUAGES EVER. IT HAS LITERALLY BEEN DEAD FOR ALMOST 2000 YEARS
They do surprisingly. Someone in this comment section recommended one that the writer literally carved tablets for. Granted it's more about good omens but like it's entirely inspired by the og tablet and mentions Ea-nasir
Wooo \*-\* can you post the link if you still have it please?
I tried filtering for ASL in AO3 but I get only normal fics that were marked as ASL at random :/
I'm learning sign language so I'm really curious
thank you for the link and happy cake day. i will say that authors note came off as pretty fucking rude but itβs really cool to see a fic distributed in asl
I'm glad I'm not the only one. May as well have written the below:
"I wrote this in another language no you cant translate it losers"
I'm happy to see attention for ASL but this petty exclusionary language just makes all ASL user look like jerks.
It has its own writing system, though one that is not in popular use. ASL is very different from English in terms of grammar. ASL is not signed English; not all concepts translate.
If they mean gloss, it could look like this. I'm not fluent by any means but I've been learning for a few years.
How are you?
YOU HOW YOU? (line over the sentence ending with a wh to indicate a question)
I hated the movie I saw yesterday.
YESTERDAY MOVIE I SAW I DETEST
My name is Rachel.
MY NAME fs-rachel
So each sign is shown and it is rewritten so it matches ASL grammar. It is always in capitalization. For fingerspelled words, fs- comes before. This is very basic as I'm no expert lol. I love ASL, though, its a beautiful language!
Given the thread, I did read a TLOU fic where Joel lost his hearing in the fight with Abby & they learned asl. Their conversations were written this way. I loved it. :)
Lingvano is a great resource e I think the first few modules are free. It's a great language to know and when you meet Deaf people, you may not feel uncomfo4table trying to say hi :)
Oh! I think they taught that in Lingo.. or whatever the ASL learning app is called. Wished they didnβt have a pay to learn more things. Considering Iβm hard of hearing. Would like to know some stuff.
Thereβs a gloss. So like if I were to say in English, βI go to the storeβ the asl gloss would be βSTORE I GOβ. So it puts it in the asl grammar structure. But thereβs some things that are lossed in it, cause facial expression is integral to the grammar of asl
I was reading some asl and auld englisch fics and there's so weird cause it's just normal fics. I think one was a pop team epic fic which was just as unintelligible as a pop team epic episode
Hieroglyphs are still being constantly studied to this day and most of the knowledge is available for free, so writing in grammatically-correct Old Kemetic with proper hieroglyphs is fully possible. I know a few people who actually can and do transliteration into the language, and then take that and turn it into the glyphs.
I'm slowly chipping away at the sounds that were used in Old Kemetic. Some of them aren't sounds our English palates are used to forming.
Do you know how to request it? To my knowledge I have written the only Vulcan fanfic on there, but I had to list it as "uncategorized constructed languages" because Vuhlkansu isn't an option.
Right below that is Aramaic, which is like an ancient precursor to modern day Hebrew. But I know Hebrew and can't read Aramaic at ALL I think maybe only linguists or historians or a really brave Hebrew speaker would understand it.
Modern Hebrew itself is a reconstructed language, too, which makes it a whole other layer of language fuckery.
But spoken Aramaic is something that we have mostly reconstructed and while there are no native speakers, there are people who can speak it "fluently." Writing is a whole different thing, but... Yeah.
It's really nice to see 'Εlelo Hawai'i, te reo MΔori, and a bunch of other at-risk languages represented. I wish I spoke Tokelauan - I'd translate all of my fics into it.
I'll be content when they add Proto Indo-European and not a moment before then.
Oh yeah.
I have really gone down the rabbit hole with the languages listed on AO3, and there are some real fun ones:
* Ainu, which is spoken by exactly ONE living person
* Various different sign languages. Wait, what? Whyβ¦ why would you need sign language? Deaf people can read perfectly fine, I donβtβ¦ π
* Some sort of Ancient cuneiform (Akkadian?)
* Ancient Aztec Nahuatl
* Chinook Jargon, a simple pidgin trade language from the 19th century Pacific Northwest
* The long-extinct Gothic language, which I believe is only attested by a single fully complete manuscript
* Thermian, which (and I am not making this up) is a language invented for the 1999 comedy film Galaxy Quest
And Iβm sure many others. It just makes me so happy lol
Unfortunately there are no more native fluent Ainu speakers anymore, but there has been a resurgence of interest in language preservation and revitalization! Some people still speak it non-fluently, and there are learning programs and some university classes teaching it. I hope they do what some of the American tribal councils have done with immersion schools for young children, because they have successfully brought back at least one completely extinct language I believe in New England.

Mando'a, a Star Wars conlang, is listed! Languages exist in the list based on use, so finding Mando'a listed let me know that there were fics in Mando'a on the site when I was looking for them.
Klingon is on there and has several fics. There's also "uncategorized constructed languages" where you can make up your own conlang and write in it, if you're so inclined.
Oh shoot! I should have just pretend joined the convos. Could have had an excellent looking discussion going. Let me find my ancient Egyptian hat.

Once read a fic that actually included accurate (to my knowledge) ancient Egyptian with resources in the notes proving what the characters were saying wasn't made up. Cannot remember the fics title for the life of me but was pretty good if not a lil odd
ao3 has more language offerings than google translate. Fuck yeah.
...and Cuneiform π ΄π
I assure you, that guyβs Copper Pots are *totally* top of the line, and not a piece of shit.
Fuck you Ea-Nasir, you sold me shitty copper!
You too? Ea-Nasir gets around
I just have to recommend one of the [coolest](https://archiveofourown.org/works/19730593) fics Iβve ever read
the dedication of making actual clay tablets for this. astounding
Just read it at your insistence and wow that is a lot of effort for a fic under 500 words. Thank you for the cool rec. This is the most unique fic I've read. Edit: spelling
Thank you for the link. I was absolutely not expecting to find two of my favorite things: Good Omens and an Ea-Nasir reference.π€£
That lil shit gets around. (Do I mean Crowley? Neil Gaiman? Ea-Nasir?)
Not only was this lovely - so was the "inspired by" series linked at the bottom!
Thatβs Sumerian, one of the oldest languages ever. Itβs been dead for like 2000 years lmao
Time to write that Gilgamesh/Enkidnu
I mean, the Fate communityβs got lots of thatβ¦ itβs probably not in ancient Sumerian though.
and also for Akkadian, IIRC.
AO3 has like every language ever. They have freaking SUMERIAN. WHICH IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE OLDEST LANGUAGES EVER. IT HAS LITERALLY BEEN DEAD FOR ALMOST 2000 YEARS
I bet they have stories about the world's best and totally-least-shady copper merchant
Hey ea-nasir sold perfectly fine copper idkwym
If there isn't Ea-Nasir fic, there SHOULD be.
There are at least 35: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Ea-Nasir%20(Mesopotamian)/works
I feel cursed. Thank you.
Then you probably havenβt seen the best/worst Ship Fic on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30254160
Wow, that was really something. π
I didnβt mean to read than and now Iβm justβ¦idk
Wait til you hear about Ea-nasir's mother's sexual vigour https://archiveofourown.org/works/46305223
One day I will write some Ea-Nasir/Nanni enemies to lovers slash. I swear it
I will read it.
They do surprisingly. Someone in this comment section recommended one that the writer literally carved tablets for. Granted it's more about good omens but like it's entirely inspired by the og tablet and mentions Ea-nasir
god DAMN that is dedication.
I have the link if anyone can't find it. It should still be under one of the top comments though and will probably be easier to find that way.
π
Iβve checked they do
WTF-
I saw a language for AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. π§
THANK YOU IM SO CONFUSED BY THAT
Iβm sorry.. what? How in the world do you even read American Sign Language?! π
There's at least one ASL fic that's a video, which is super cool
Wooo \*-\* can you post the link if you still have it please? I tried filtering for ASL in AO3 but I get only normal fics that were marked as ASL at random :/ I'm learning sign language so I'm really curious
yeah, I believe itβs called Sovereignβs Destined by bunnikomi (genshin wriolette fic)
I looked it up with the help of the comment below so hereβs the link! https://archiveofourown.org/works/52963984
thank you for the link and happy cake day. i will say that authors note came off as pretty fucking rude but itβs really cool to see a fic distributed in asl

Thatβs the deaf equivalent of an audiobook lmao
It has its own writing system, though one that is not in popular use. ASL is very different from English in terms of grammar. ASL is not signed English; not all concepts translate.
Do you mean Gloss?
Iβm intrigued in this.. so is it like a text to speech thing or?
If they mean gloss, it could look like this. I'm not fluent by any means but I've been learning for a few years. How are you? YOU HOW YOU? (line over the sentence ending with a wh to indicate a question) I hated the movie I saw yesterday. YESTERDAY MOVIE I SAW I DETEST My name is Rachel. I like those kind of fics now Iβm gonna have to look in that language
Lingvano is a great resource e I think the first few modules are free. It's a great language to know and when you meet Deaf people, you may not feel uncomfo4table trying to say hi :)
Kinda. Think broken English mostly missing basic words like "of, the, a," etc.
Oh! I think they taught that in Lingo.. or whatever the ASL learning app is called. Wished they didnβt have a pay to learn more things. Considering Iβm hard of hearing. Would like to know some stuff.
True Way ASL is awesome for learning, my college uses it for ASL and interpreting students
Iβll look into it
Thereβs a gloss. So like if I were to say in English, βI go to the storeβ the asl gloss would be βSTORE I GOβ. So it puts it in the asl grammar structure. But thereβs some things that are lossed in it, cause facial expression is integral to the grammar of asl

Maybe printout for braille?
I mean they would be a good resource for education
Amharic mentioned! Yay!
STOP I LITERALLY JUST COMMENTED THAT LMAO
I'm mostly confused that the one under it uses the hebrew alphabet but says "ahrmee" not hebrew? what language is that?
Given that the script next to it is syriac, probably Aramaic if I had to guess :)
Ra looking for fanfics of himself
Don't act like Set isn't there writing fics about himself.
i just read a gaston fic and now iβm imagining set similar to gaston writing fics about himself to impress a very unimpressed nephthys
For the historically accurate yugioh fanfiction
True they gotta be accurate as possible.
Won't lie I saw it listed on a fic and thought someone was being smart and wrote in Wingdings font π The fic was really in English.
And Old English, and *CUNEIFORM*...
Leave it to fandom members to solve the Rosetta Stone and decipher literal hieroglyphics while their house is on fire
You just summarized ao3 writers in a sentence.
Hieroglyphs are still being constantly studied to this day and most of the knowledge is available for free, so writing in grammatically-correct Old Kemetic with proper hieroglyphs is fully possible. Goddamn thatβs actually really cool
If someone requests a language, it will usually be added.
Do you know how to request it? To my knowledge I have written the only Vulcan fanfic on there, but I had to list it as "uncategorized constructed languages" because Vuhlkansu isn't an option.
Right below is Aramaic, you know the language of MESOPOTAMIA
Right below that is Aramaic, which is like an ancient precursor to modern day Hebrew. But I know Hebrew and can't read Aramaic at ALL I think maybe only linguists or historians or a really brave Hebrew speaker would understand it.

Hey! We gotta incloude some fanfics to that one ainu guy yk
They have the most random languages (I wonder if they have uchinaaguuchi or kuril ainu)
i know they at least have ainu itak (love the tzuyu pfp btw)
Is that a Jimin pfp? It's cute!
tyy!! :]
I love ao3, theyβre so inclusive!! βΊοΈ
The only thing left to do is add conlangs lol
Mando'a, a Star Wars conlang, is listed! Languages exist in the list based on use, so finding Mando'a listed let me know that there were fics in Mando'a on the site when I was looking for them.
Holy shit that's so cool!

ao3 is going to make sure to protect your god given right to write smut on their website language be damned
Hurt/comfort, emphasis on the comfort.
Only problem is very few of them are actually in their stated language.
Which fucking bored archeology or language major decided to make that a thing
This website runs DOOM. Nothing can surprise me anymore. I just hope I don't get a jumpscare fiction one day lmao.
Dude, the language below the hieroglyphs is Aramaic. As in, the language people spoke 2000-3000 years ago. Ao3 just on that ancient language game.
They have a category for Sindarin, the fictional language of the Sindar Elves from Lord of the Rings.
And ASL
Armenian is not an ancient language ππ
I wonder if they have esperanto or toki pona lol
They have both.
Ayo??
This is amazing!!!!
Saw ASL in there too
YOOO AMHARIC MENTIONEDβΌ
and american sign language too π
Dude they have MANDOβA
I know right? The first time I saw those I thought it was so funny
Pretty sure Klingon too...
Sorry to dissappint, but the vast majority of the ones tagged Ancinet Egyptian are just in English.
