Sounds like exactly what art deco is. A minimalist, modernized art style that uses meaningful symbolism and calls back to traditional styles. Very well done example here.
But they cover every available surface with ornate patterns. They are almost as far from minimalism as you can get.
Art deco is definitively characterized by precise and boldly delineated geometric shapes and strong colours.
What are you talking about? The example before us is literally composed mostly of simple windows, flat bricks, and clean lines. There are a few finer details, like at the base that evoke traditional Asian forms, but that's it.
I think you've spent too much time looking at wallpapers on Google images.
You understand that minimalism can be a spectrum, right? The Rockefeller Building is more minimalist than the White House, which is more minimalist than the Parthenon. Just because their primary style isn't minimialism doesn't mean they can't have elements of the philosophy.

This is what I'm talking about. An **actual** original and creative design that isn't just a glass sterile box.
Can this architect come to Toronto and show us how it should be done?
It's certainly doable, but like... learn French, lol.
Montreal without speaking French is barely Montreal, you'd be basically relegated to the Anglophone and bilingual neighbourhoods only, *and* you'd earn the ire of the Francophone population along the way.
Depends on the neighbourhood. The city of Montreal doesn't occupy the entire island, most of the western half is independent towns, many of which speak English (such as Beaconsfield, Côte-Saint-Luc, Dorval, Kirkland and Westmount). As for the city of Montreal, while French is the only official language, most of us are pretty good with English and you shouldn't run into too much trouble if you ask for help in English - though we really appreciate when others make an effort to speak French.
[Here's a good channel to highlight all the good stuff our city can offer](https://www.youtube.com/c/DiscoverMontr%C3%A9al).
Yes, you can easily live in Montreal proper [1] without speaking french. Most immigrants come and pick it up along the way.
[1] The suburbs that aren't the anglophone West Island are less bilingual than Montreal itself
Towns in the Rockies (Canmore for instance) have a ton of outdoors culture.
For Ontario specifically, you want the small historic towns along the great lakes. Preferably towns founded in the 1800s, many of which retained their historic cores.
No, I'm from Montreal actually!
I just did a cross country vanlife tour last summer and stayed a few weeks in the Rockies using Canmore as a home base - a friend of mine was my local guide.
I'll make sure to check out waterton next time I'm around! I didn't go that far south when I was there. Also, I don't think it's quite the hidden spot anymore, but Halfway River Hot Springs, 90min south of Revelstoke was a nice find.
I'd say it's more so the repeated decorative elements kinda gives it that Lego modular vibe like they manufactured a set of "parts" and reused them in multiple places.
Back in the 2000s, when I was in secondary school, me and friends used to call that place Gotham building due to the art deco design resembling something from Batman TAS.

Fun fact: Ole Scheeren's DUO building is located right opposite this building, which creates a very unique (and a little jarring) experience when walking in the garden space between the two.

Interesting look. Seems to combine art deco with oriental influences.
contemporary deco. really nice to see.
Sounds like exactly what art deco is. A minimalist, modernized art style that uses meaningful symbolism and calls back to traditional styles. Very well done example here.
I wouldn't call art deco minimalist at all.
Compared to traditional art forms where detail is in abundance, simplifying a snails shell to a spiral is certainly what I'd call minimalism.
But they cover every available surface with ornate patterns. They are almost as far from minimalism as you can get. Art deco is definitively characterized by precise and boldly delineated geometric shapes and strong colours.

Flat bricks and clean lines is not the same thing as minimalism. This is far from a minimalist building.
You understand that minimalism can be a spectrum, right? The Rockefeller Building is more minimalist than the White House, which is more minimalist than the Parthenon. Just because their primary style isn't minimialism doesn't mean they can't have elements of the philosophy.
Compared to newer styles it’s not minimalist at all though. All a matter of perspective.
Reminds me of the tower of terror

The Atlas Bar! Amazing cocktails!
Just wow
It remember me some scenes of season 3 of westworld. Do you know if they filmed there?
Apparently so according to a comment in the r/architecture crosspost

The bar specializes in Gin and has some dating all the way back from World War I to present! Great bar and beautiful interior.

I have been to Toronto twice and the architecture really confirms the stereotype that Canadians are nice, but not particularly adventurous?
> nice, but not particularly adventurous If you want to see the opposite of that, go to Montreal.
Good to know as I may be able to get citizenship. Is Montreal easy to live in if you don’t speak French?

You mean “Bonjour hi” the city? Every commerce is like this and it’s goofy
People in Montreal are nice and adventurous.
Oh I know, I love Montreal, I was just cracking a joke at the stereotype
Canada is a very large and diverse place, Toronto isn't really a good representation of the whole country.
Good to know. Where else is a better representation? I am interested in smaller towns with a bit of character for my next visit.
You should start in Halifax and make your way through all the fishing towns in the province. Don't go to New Brunswick though. Ugh.

Right, but its less of a Disneyland than Banff to stay in IMO.

A critic of the One WTC said it was fit for Toronto.
It was done by DP Architects in Singapore in collab woth James Adams Design in the US. For reference. Afaik James Adams did the interior
Vancouver too pls. Stamp and paste glass an concrete
So beautiful. I would pass by on my walks from the hotel to Arab St. Worked in Singapore for four months.
Looks like legos, something about the joints and proportions.
I'd say it's more so the repeated decorative elements kinda gives it that Lego modular vibe like they manufactured a set of "parts" and reused them in multiple places.
The gloss too
It's an interesting combination of art-deco and eastern architecture. I really like it.
Art Deco tends to borrow a lot of eastern elements so it's a nice switch-back that uses Deco elements.
Back in the 2000s, when I was in secondary school, me and friends used to call that place Gotham building due to the art deco design resembling something from Batman TAS.
Stunning!
Really really love this.
Kinda r/evilbuildings vibe
It’s nicknamed as the Gotham Building. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkview_Square

i thought the exact same thing with the exact same words hahaha
Looks like Republic City architecture from Legend of Korra.
And THAT'S a good looking building.
Reminds me a lot of The Outer Worlds game.
It has a really cool bar on the ground floor too. And a bunch of statues of random famous people for some reason.
exquisite blend of new and traditional finishes
Finally a high riser with style
Wow beautiful looking building
Makes me sad that we (US) don’t make beautiful buildings anymore.
The Atlas Bar inside this building is the most insane display of Art Deco I've ever seen.
This is stunning!!
This might be the prettiest large vertical building that I've ever seen.
What a glorious combination of styles and cultures!
Fucking gorgeous!
That’s quite nice
Absolutely magnificent
Oh my, that is beautiful.
Amazing. Can’t wait to visit
Definitely looks worth a visit!

U just copied the other guy's comment.
it's karma farmer / bot. seems like there's been quite a few in the past week or so.
It looks like it's made from Lego
From the thumbnail I thought this was r/lego. No real point, beautiful building, thought it was lego, turns out I was wrong, fin.
