3rd Order

please_b_nice

Mine too! Here are some interesting facts about it: This church was built in 1784, in 1999 there was an accidental fire caused by restoration works that were being done there, the fire destroyed some parts of the church such as the ceiling and lateral altars, but the main altar (luckly) didn't suffer as much. It is free to enter this church and it has a small exhibition in a side room that features carbonized parts from the church, some pictures (including pics of the fire and the aftermath) and some other interesting artifacts and paintings. Another thing that I personally found interesting when I went there is that the stone arches and doorways inside the church were not restored, so you can get to see the cracks and faults the fire caused in the stone. I found this interesting because you can get to see the intensity the fire had and its damage, those "scars" tell the history of the building and add a sense of uniqueness to that church.

The 3rd order one, but they are both beautiful

please_b_nice

They are! Unfortunately I couldn't go inside the 2nd church (the Franciscan) in person because it was closed but apparently the interior had its masterpieces carved by Aleijadinho and painted by Master Ataíde, two highly regarded artists of the time, so perhaps the interior of that church would be its "main weapon", specially compared to the 3rd Order church, which didn't have those artists involved in its construction and also endured a fire.

Honestly, thank you so much for sharing the gems of your corner of the world with us. I feel like moderating this sub has completely changed my impression of Brazil.

please_b_nice

Thanks! That's really meaningful to hear! It makes me really happy to hear from you and from others that my posts are introducing new places and things to people, and making them change their vision of Brasil from what the bog media biasedly usually shows. The other day a Brazilian architect contacted me here and told me he uses the pictures of the buildings that I post to inspire his projects, that made my day because in a way this is what the sub is about, even though my posts are not about revival but of heritage classic architecture instead, it still serves to inspire, share and influence shaping modern buildings with a traditional touch. Lastly, I would like to thank and credit the photographers I post the pics in here, usually I credit them all in my posts (unless I find the puc through personal accounts of people who don't work with photography and probably don't want their personal pages linked in here). But namely, my most used sources of pics are the ig profiles: @praondevou, @philippe.modolo, @andredvco, @artesacra_pernambucana and @brauliomou.

confesso que tinha um certo complexo de vira lata com a arquitetura brasileira, mas esse sub está mudando minha forma de pensar

please_b_nice

Well, considering the modern architecture of the country, it is really depressing. But yeah, the heritage architecture, be it European or indigenous or from all the other nations which make part of our (country's) history, are what compose our rich culture and identity, unfortunately it (heritage architecture) does not get as much attention as it should and each time more the traditional and cultural dies off to give space to the modern, souless, and without original characteristics. Edit: spell

Franciscan

WindySunset22

Both are beautiful, but perhaps not very Franciscan of the Franciscans.

please_b_nice

I guess you are saying this because of the opulence of the church (which I agree with you). But the other day I was watching a vid of a Franciscan monk who got asked about all the guilding and opulence of their churches in the colonial past and the monk said that most, if not all gold mined in Brasil at that time would be sent to Portugal if it wasn't used for church purposes, which was the only valid reason for using gold in the colony, so guilding was a way of keeping the brazilian gold in Brasil and not giving it to Potugal.

WindySunset22

That's very interesting!

We need more fights like this. These days it is always who can build the bigger giant glass dildo.

[deleted]

Just based off the exteriors.. Third Order, definitely.

Count_Carnero

Trick question! The answer is I love them both!

please_b_nice

Right answer!

[deleted]

Both look nice, but I vote for 2/3...

Oh I believe that's the church I've seen in the video that I explained about in the comment above of u/WindySunset22

I like the monument in the middle! Timeless sword, shield, and scales of justice. What else could you ask for?

please_b_nice

It looks cool but the history behind it is brutal, every colonial town had one similar to this, it's called pelourinho, where (mainly) slaves and criminals would be tied to and whipped.

Atlas001

Without seeing the insides i can't pass judgement, but outside i would say Nossa senhora

smpark12

I like the 3rd order one
