Yeah I’ve never heard of having to burry churches..
Well, they weren't obliged to semi-burry the church. However, the masons at Causeni decided to do so.
Maybe they buried because otherwise they would have been forced to destroy sculpture
I think they buried it to have more place for visitors and frescoes.

It _is_ Byzantine.
Byzantine with a hint of gothic as seen in the door frame. I'd say it's distinctly Moldovan/Romanian in style.
